I upgraded to a new unit this year. It's sweet! I went with a heat pump system. Also, they wired the thermostat, so that I can keep the digital display backlit all of the time. My electric bill for last month was the lowest it's ever been for a July in Texas! My old unit was decades old, and very inefficient.

Why isn't this considered a typhoon, as opposed to a hurricane?
-
Why isn't this considered a typhoon, as opposed to a hurricane?
Depends on the hemisphere in which it occurs. Basically, they are the same thing.
-
8/22/2018 -- Large M6.2 Earthquake strikes West Coast USA / Oregon -- Seismic Unrest Spreading
-
Why isn't this considered a typhoon, as opposed to a hurricane?
A typhoon differs from a cyclone or hurricane only on the basis of location. A hurricane is a storm that occurs in the Atlantic Ocean or northeastern Pacific Ocean, a typhoon occurs in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, and a tropical cyclone occurs in the south Pacific or Indian Ocean.

I knew it depended on location, but I thought hurricanes were only in Atlantic and Caribbean, typhoons in the Pacific, and cyclones in the Indian.
Thanks

Is "Hurricane Lane" promoted by Don King or Jimmy Hart? ;) Kidding there are not funny, considering the anniversary of Harvey. I see the Hawaii team is playing now in the Little League WS and they are talking about the storm coming.

Contrary to the doom and gloom, the strongest winds from the hurricane anywhere on the islands is now 21 mph, as the hurricane weakens while being basically stalled. Terms like "barreling towards Hawaii" were always false and only done to grab headline views, the reality is that this hurricane stalled out to the southwest of the big island days ago, kept a lot of strength for a long time, and is now dying. As I predicted more than a day ago, this hurricane is simply not going to be a big deal for Hawaii.
They will get big waves, as I said, and heavy rains, as I said, and that is all. This was indeed a powerful hurricane but if it goes nowhere and stays at sea, it is just a dog barking in a cage. At this point I am calling it - the show is over.
I'm interested in what the effects of a lot of rain pouring into those fresh lava tubes will be--but no one seems to be openly addressing that, likely for obvious reasons.

From what I understand, it's the effect of the volcanic heat on the hurricane, that could potentially increase its category power.

Fucking piece of shit living on the frikking bayou sucks. I was putting all my energy into protecting @21st Century Man and the tide came up 4 1/2’ above normal and flooded the downstairs and the pool. Luckily I moved the vehicles out when the water started coming into the road. It hasn’t even rained a drop today. I’m goad I looked out. I had to go down and retrieve some floating gas cans, one of which dumped and grab all the pool toys. And turn off the pool pump. Man I am pissed. But I got to do it all naked. That part was fun.

Reckon from pressures (or whatever) from the storms heading into FLA somehow or due the rivers heading down and weird rain in Hill Country, or both? Hope it isn't bad for you and all, especially where storm heading.

I think more of a “spring†tide. (Not season) coupled with winds from the south for 4 days. Although north of houston in the Trinity watershed did get a lot of training rain this evening/afternoon.

We had some big rains but pop-up and not long but dump when happen. But as mentioned some areas had some bad ones....hope your area will be ok.

Sorry to hear that, Grav. Skinnydipping is only fun when other people are watching. You never know when something is going to take a bite out of ya.
Michael is now a Cat 4, 130mph. Not worried too much. Supposed to veer off towards South Carolina after making landfall on the panhandle. Savannah is going to have a hell of a time though.

I disagree. Skinny dipping is nirvana.
I didn’t like it in high school. Some sick bastard on the school board decided it would be enlightening to have all of the boys swim naked in gym class. Still not sure what that was about. It wasn’t nirvana then.

Another high tide and winds and rain due on the 3rd.

That was frightening to watch too, I thought I recognized the location. Hard to believe that an earthen dam is the best bet in earthquake country, but perhaps it distributes the torsional forces better than a concrete or rock dam would.
But, it looks like the 1 billion rebuild wasn't really successful either:

From the evening of May 21 to the early morning of May 22, a total of 12 hours, a series of earthquakes occurred in four places in mainland China, namely Yunnan, Sichuan, Qinghai and Shaanxi.
The first earthquake, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Yangbi County, Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province.
The second earthquake, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake in Xuyong County, Luzhou City, Sichuan Province.
The third earthquake, magnitude 7.4 in Mado County, Qinghai Province.
The fourth earthquake, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake in Shangluo, Shaanxi.
Floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, and the coronavirus outbreak that originated from Wuhan - why are there so many disasters in China? In ancient traditional Chinese culture, there is a saying that "heaven and mankind are united" and "connection between heaven and mankind". When there are abnormalities, people, especially the ones in power, have to reflect on it, offer sacrifices to the heavens, and even issue imperial edicts for sins.
Since 2020, the Chinese Communist regime has fallen into a more serious internal and external crisis, with an internal economic downturn and a dark tide of power struggle among various factions; externally, the wolf warrior diplomacy has made the international community more united against the hegemony of the Chinese Communist Party, resulting in a diplomatic defeat and suppressions from the international community. Under the multiple crises, the CCP's regime is shaking like the recent unexplained shaking of the Sage Plaza Building.

Oh yeah @StarrMountain Ida took a visit to the Northeast. I live in Philadelphia PA. I received over 20 alerts that a tornado was heading to my neighborhood. I live in a home that was built in 1870's. A bedrock cellar, bricks, wood and wet walls. No sheet rock walls for me. After the tornado took a turn for Jersey, I took a photo of Ida clouds passing me by. God is Good.

Earthquake in Mexico.
Where do you hide during an earthquake @Rikki Gins ?
-
Hurricanes scare me but earthquakes terrify me more. You can prepare for a Hurricane, but earthquakes are sneaky devils.
-
Where do you hide during an earthquake @Rikki Gins ?
@FISH You lean up against a wall near the center of your house, or crawl underneath a big piece of heavy furniture. You would do well to make your way outside where it should be fairly safe so long as there are no tall buildings to fall on you, or downed powerlines that you definitely wouldn't want to step on. I was in an earthquake once while at work. My right foot was resting on a guard rail when all at once it started to move like jelly under my foot. That was the extent of it, there was no damage, though in another part of the state it caused a boulder to roll down a hill and kill a person that was driving by at the time.

I tried to get to a doorway, but the floor seemed to come and go which made that plan difficult to execute.

Thanks @Rikki Gins . Earthquakes are very rare in Philly. I have experience about two events. For me, the last time I felt the earth move was a few years ago. I was sitting in a chair with wheels in the nursing station. We all started to wheel around. I became so confused. And then it stopped.

@StarrMountain this is the exact scenario that could wipe out the east coast. Sure would do a lot to clean out the swamp. This 2017 article concentrates on the threat to Britain and Portugal/Spain, but I remember discussions of a 100’ tidal wave projected to hit the east coast of the US.

That was brought up on some of the videos with commentary. So far, the word is that there is little chance of that happening right now.

While most people do not associate the tropical paradise that Hawaii is known for with snow, they are surprised to learn that it snows in winter due to the elevation of these volcanic peaks. Mauna Kea is the tallest of these, at 13,803 feet. Halikala in Maui is much lower at 10,023 feet. Due to this difference, the island of Hawaii will snow more often than the lower island of Maui. In just one storm last January, the island of Hawaii received 2-3 feet of snow and deeper snow drifts.

National Weather Service Issues ‘Falling Iguana Alert’ in Florida
PUNTA GORDA, Fla.–This weekend is expected to be one of the coldest in four years for South Floridians, prompting the National Weather Service in Miami to issue a Falling Iguana Alert via Twitter.
Jan. 30 is predicted to be the coldest day locally since 2018.
South Florida occasionally sees temperatures dip into the 30s and 40s overnight, which causes the cold-blooded reptiles to become “temporarily stunned,†until temperatures warm up. They are known to sleep in trees and when immobilized by the cold, they “stiffen and lose their grip on the branches,†and fall to the ground or sometimes on an unsuspecting passerby.
Iguanas are not indigenous to Florida and are considered invasive by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC). Native to Central and South America and Mexico, they prefer warmer climates, making Florida ideal. However, when temperatures reach 40 and below, they slip into a cold-induced slumber. Instead of dying, they thaw out and return to be a pest another day.

Alright. I've had just about enough of this:
West megadrought worsens to driest in at least 1,200 years
AP NewsThe American West’s megadrought deepened so much last year that it is now the driest in at least 1,200 years and is a worst-case climate change scenario playing out live, a new study finds.
A dramatic drying in 2021 — about as dry as 2002 and one of the driest years ever recorded for the region — pushed the 22-year drought past the previous record-holder for megadroughts in the late 1500s and shows no signs of easing in the near future, according to a study Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change.
The study calculated that 42% of this megadrought can be attributed to human-caused climate change.
“Climate change is changing the baseline conditions toward a drier, gradually drier state in the West and that means the worst-case scenario keeps getting worse,†said study lead author Park Williams, a climate hydrologist at UCLA. “This is right in line with what people were thinking of in the 1900s as a worst-case scenario. But today I think we need to be even preparing for conditions in the future that are far worse than this. ...

I was in Seattle during the earthquake, getting ready to watch the A's play the Giants in the World Series.
I saw the auto repair shop next to my old apartment building in Berkeley explode and burn, and heard the apartment residents spent the next few nights across the street in the Berkeley High gym.

Okay that was kind of funny.
Why do i get the feeling Hillary hates that such a divesting hurricane is named after her. But Trump would brag if a Hurricane Donald was doing so much damage, "I see, Hurricane Donald is the most epic and divesting hurricane of recent memory" and sell a bunch of "Hurricane Donald A Storm is Coming" t-shirts
