In no particular order:
The Exorcist
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
House of a 1000 Corpses
Devil's Rejects
Demons
Phantasm
Halloween
Salem's Lot
Prince of Darkness
The Thing
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Friday the 13th
Hellraiser
The Hills Have Eyes
Event Horizon
Last House on the Left
Halloween is my all time favorite horror movie. The Exorcist is #2. I love the horror genre in general and it's hard to delineate my reasons why I hold certain movies in a high regard. I have a great fondness for the old-time movies too, such as Frankenstein, Dracula, et al.

I have an original first edition (#1006 of 2000) Mister Babadook book. These are very well made, heavy too. Exact depiction of the book in the film. Ordered it in 2014 received it in February of 2016 as they took a long time to get it right. It's a cool conversation piece in my studio.

The Exorcist made me snicker (the book was way spooky).... Jaws made me giggle.....
The only Horror movie that startled me out of my seat. 70mm.... dome theater (the kind that put the films sound in your head like wearing headphones)... opening day.

You're welcome, you two. It is a classic and I come back to it very year. I'll post a few other Barbara Steele pictures that I enjoy. All are atmospheric and some are almost the equal of Black Sunday. Black Sunday also goes by the title, The Mask of Satan, in the British cut. The British cut is slightly gorier and a tad longer.

I bought it on blu-ray a few months back. It used to come on tv a lot back in the day and always thought it weird but couldn't make much sense out of it. I think a lot was cut out for commercial tv. Anyway, I plan to watch it soon. Sounds like a good pick for the next week.

Martin Sheen is pretty creepy in this one. 70's horror always seems the creepiest to me. More atmospheric and slower paced. The music also seemed otherworldly.

Whoa! I remember seeing that as a kid and it scared the daylights out o' me. I remember what looked like a court scene where all the freaky characters stood up like a jury.... Hmm going to have to look for that one and see what the hell I think I saw, again.

The scenes with Steele and the jury of Satanic co-conspirators were creepy and perverse. They seemed like they belonged in another film though. It was like they filmed these scenes after the fact to make the film juicier. I would have loved to see Steele interact in the film with Lee and Karloff.
Think I'll post a few more greats this time from the silent era.

As with many, if not most, the original one was better. Not great, or even good but ok [REC] Somewhat. Sometimes though the foreign films/locations/original work better. Like the original our movies are (usually} better than the remakes. Have actors, don't have to cgi, rely on plot, lighting, etc.

As long as they keep the same writers and director, I'd love to see a long franchise of these movies. I saw the spinoff, The Nun and hated it. I thought the Annabelle movies were better, especially the first one. Do you know what haunting the third movie is going to be based on?

Thanks 21st! I don't think I'm familiar with that case. I'll have to look into it. I did look on imdb and noticed that they're using the writer from The Nun. This doesn't bode well at all.

That's the rumor I heard as well, certainly a different direction from the first two Conjuring but I love the characters so much the supernatural aspect is just icing on the cake.

Well. Went on a horror movie hunt that wasn't based on attracting a theatre full of teens. Leave it to the Asians to offer up yet one more VERY gruesome offering.

I can't say that I would want to see that. Do I dare ask about the quality of the dialogue? Does he become a "nice Terrifier" in the end?

LOL! Typical dumb-chick dialogue, aside from one who should've stayed home and not answered her sisters call. He chewed her face off, yet lived. Nothing ends well for the people in that movie.

Hey. @bateman Hell yeah. Definitely fantastic throwback slasher flicks. Just as I was about to see Terrifier 2 and it was not in any theaters in my area. I waited too long. My loss. I'll just rent it.
The budget for Terrifier was $35,000. Think about that! The gore effects were remarkable. The guy that played Art The Clown. Wow. The mannerisms, etc. As far as horror icons go, to me, he is in the top 5. If he moves on from the genre he probably will have a nice career. If he stays in it, then he may go far.
By the way, there is a Terrifier 3 in the works. 8)
I've been revisiting some old stuff like Last House On The Left and I Spit on Your Grave. The remake of LHOTL was really good. Now that the rights to Friday the 13th were finally given back to the original creator, I'm curious to see the next reboot. Whenever that happens.

Check out Fandango, there may be additional theaters in your area that have it. If not, get the Screambox trial on Amazon Prime and cancel it within 7 days to watch it for free. It's better than the first; reminded me a lot of the original Scream and Halloween.

Holy shit, I had no idea the first one was that cheap. Apparently the director designed the gore effects himself. And yes, the guy who played Art is beyond unnerving. Completely agree with everything you said.

Nothing close to me. I'll give Screambox a shot. Thanks for the tip. I was surprised that Terrifier was made on the cheap. Part 2 was $250,000 (I think). I'm glad the sequels may be split. 2 1/2 hours for a movie like that sort of takes away the thrill of it all. Make it 90 minutes and the fans will want more.

I watched 'Smile' and 'Nope' over the last two days. I'll never get that time back. 'Smile' had potential, but was just plain bad. I liked the Jordan Peele movies, 'Get Out' and 'Us.' However 'Nope' was abysmal. I was so bored. The movie was dull, to say the least, and quite frankly is now on my list of one of the worst movies of all time. Everyone has their own interpretation and opinion but you could not pay me to watch that again. "Hey ShayP! Come on over and we'll watch Nope. As a bonus I'll give you my brand new Chevy Silverado. I paid cash for it! What do ya say?" NOPE

Watched Leaving DC recently. Low budget afair but it started out pretty decent. Then...pfffft. Nothing. Kind of a time sync.

Thanks for that, Shay. I was thinking about seeing “Smile.†Nope. ;)

After all the discussion about the Terrifier in HERE, I was surprised to see it recommended to me on Tubi or Prime. I put some effort into it, I tried, but it's soooo poorly made and the "acting" is the only terrifying thing about the movie. Welfare clown with an attitude supposed to scare me? C'mon you guys, it's horrible.

I go into any horror movie with low expectations. I've been burned so many times by some "new horror masterpiece" that supposedly comes out every other year. The Terrifier movies are simple, effective slasher flicks, incredibly well made for the low budgets. You didn't like the acting? Vapid 20 year old girls sound exactly like the girls in that movie.
-
Oh, what the hell. I’ll check it out. A late Halloween flick movie for me. Besides, who can’t get enough of airhead chicks. ;)

Don't go into it expecting a masterpiece. But it's infinitely better than any of those stupid movies about a haunted doll.

*sigh* Does anything please you...aside from being a rock star sex machine? Jeez! You know you were curled up on the couch, clutching a pillow, and hoping that you wouldn't have nightmares. Plus you masturbated twice to those sluts. :D

Exactly. It's not like I'd go to see Cannibal Holocaust and think it may be up there with Citizen Kane, which I think is highly overrated by the way. But that's another topic.
You go in with low expectations and let the tide rise. The anticipation. More often that not one is disappointed. However, there are films where you leave thinking "Holy shit what did I just watch", or just having your mind blown. And sometimes feeling dirty and uneasy.

Will do. Art looks interesting.

That’s how I went into the theater. Art the Clown definitely makes the movie. I like how it started. After a gruesome murder, Art calmly waltzes into a laundromat, strips naked to wash his blood spattered clown suit, and sets back to read the paper. Also, it’s where he first sees The Little Pale Girl, a nice little creepy addition to the movie.
It definitely had an 80’s slasher/ horror vibe too, similar to “A Nightmare on Elm Street,†if Freddie had just shut up and been about 100 times more sadistic. Art’s da man! ;) I think he could smile down Freddie, then just eat his brains. ;) Also, NO F’n CGI, which is a big plus and makes the movie even more gruesome.
It was good to see Art finally take out the bitch mother. She should have been made to suffer more, for her miserable acting, though. Shame on you, Art. ;D
The movie would have benefited from some tight editing. It was at least 20 minutes too long. More Art, less mom the bitch and the dork kid. I think I would have cut most of the school scenes, including the dead opossum stuff. Also, the knife-Sienna reincarnation at the end was lame. For me, the entire Sienna-Art relationship and ending should have been more creative.
The movie is certainly better than any of the “Halloween†crap recently released. I can see it now in a sequel, with Art scrawling in blood “Sienna, I was your father!†;)

Agree with most of this. Valid criticisms.

I’m glad folks were posting about this movie. I thought about seeing “Terrifier 2†and “Smile†around Halloween but blew it off. Art the Clown was worthy. ;)
I did see a really awful 80’s slasher movie during a Halloween flick-fest. It was definitely MST3K material. So bad, I was laughing throughout the showing. The best thing about it was it had Linda Day George in it, along with her bad-acting hubbie.

I remember seeing that years ago. Ugh. It was bad. You have to admit that Christopher George was good in The Rat Patrol. I always wanted a Jeep with a M2 Browning . 50 Cal machine gun mounted to it. :D

The Rat Patrol is about the only thing I remember him in that I actually like. :) A classic intro.
His wife sure was a hot Nazi. ;)

Add Lynda Carter from that image. Pick a name out of a hat and I'd be happy with either one. ;) :D
I think Christopher George was in an episode of Night Gallery. I really don't know much about his career.

I've been checking out some upcoming horror flicks and it doesn't look promising. More remakes, reboots, and supernatural stuff that typically is boring. However, I will check out Salem's Lot. First time on the big screen. The first one on TV was nightmare fuel.
Face the master!

I check every year. And EVERY year I am reminded of the law of diminishing returns. Sometimes great cinematography and a seemingly good representation in the trailer sucks me in. But sure enough, within 10 or-so minutes I/you know exactly how things are going to unfold. Sometimes it is quite apparent that they have borrowed/lifted from two or three other successful movies, and it makes it even more of a cringe experience as they fumble and fuck themselves in what turns out to be a big damn waste of time for ME!
I JUST WANT TO SETTLE IN FOR A GENUINE NEW IDEA and enjoy an original cinematic experience.
-
Apparently they can’t even get scantily clad young women going into the basement right anymore.
-
And that's another thing. At least 75% of "horror" movies now are aimed at teens and those in their 20's. And of course the scantily clad chick or two is going to get sawed in half and you know it an hour before it happens. I won't even get started on the whole 'found footage' scourge that sprang from Blair Witch in 2000.
..I'm bitter and soured on the whole movie experience these days.

I'm with ya man. There have been many times where after 15 minutes I thought "I should just leave." However, I paid $14 for a ticket and I'll never get it back, so I just sit there in misery.

One of my buddies thinks that Blair Witch is one of the best horror films ever. He talked me into seeing it with him when it came out. (It was his third time watching it) All that went through my mind was that I wanted to slap him in the face for wasting my time. The movie would've been better if I could somehow get into the actual film as a character and kill them all. I hated it. Thank goodness he purchased my ticket.

The only really inventive new horror/thriller concepts I've seen in recent years are a handful of Black Mirror episodes.

This clearly is the Fave Horror Films thread but we've been critical of some things. I'm not sure a Worst Horror Films thread is needed but I know what the worst one is.
House of the Dead Uwe Boll directed it and he is known for shitty movies.
It came out in 2003 and was based on a 1996 Sega video game. The movie was terrible. What made it worse is that at random times during the film the Sega Video game would appear on the screen.
Here are a few reviews from Rotten Tomatoes and I concur.
One of the most astonishingly idiotic pieces of entertainment I've ever had the displeasure of sitting through.
House of the Dead is a very entertaining film, but only because it's made in a such inept and unprofessional way that it's almost impossible to believe that it was shown in cinemas.
Atrociously Bad Horror/Acton Movie. The acting is clueless (Sadly it looks like they are trying), horrific dialogue, no chemistry, no charm, generic and no likeable characters. At its best the acting is ok (10% of the time) and the rest just beyond bad. The cinematography is.....bad is putting it lightly.
This is the first live-action horror movie based on a video game that I've ever seen in which the game's animation is actually used as a repeated special effect. This is not a good thing.
It was me, a friend, and five other people in the theater. That's it. Within 20 minutes it turned into each of us making fun of the movie. It all started when my friend exclaimed "God! This is awful!" Everybody laughed and agreed. We stayed through the whole thing because of the joy of making fun of it.
-
The horror films that freaked me out the most the first time I saw them.
1) Night of the Living Dead - First saw it as a kid at a Saturday matinee.
2) The Last Man on Earth - The Vincent Price one. Again as a wee child at a matinee. That damn front door scene, with his wife coming back from the dead. Don’t open the door, Vincent!
3) Alien - Holy Hell.
4) The Thing - John Carpenter. One of the best, if not the best, of the remakes.
Probably a few more, but I definitely haven’t forgotten the ones above. For some reason, The Exorcist and The Shining didn’t do much for me.

Add a few of the Halloween movies, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and of course what I mentioned in an earlier post...Salem's Lot. The vampire in Salem's Lot and that window scene wit the brother freaked me out.
I also have an appreciation for John Carpenter's, Prince of Darkness. I thought it was very underrated.

LOL! That's pretty much how it went down. Me, a friend, along with 5 strangers just taking their turns bashing the film. It was great. Those who were sitting in the lower rows moved up the aisle to the point where we were all together just talking smack to a movie screen. ;D

Sometimes there are particular scenes from an otherwise half-assed movie that fuck you up and give 7 year old me nightmares! I don't know what the hell the weird troll dwarf has to do with anything. The movie is about a couple whose young daughters' life is cut short when she drowns in a pond near the family home. So what do they do? Take a trip to Venice to clear their heads but eventually they start seeing a small figure disappearing around corners and such wearing a little red coat identical to their daughters. You never really see what or who is in the coat until the end after Donald Sutherlands character chases it? down. When she/it turned around seven-year-old me almost shit his pants in surprised and unexpected fight.

I didn't like that movie. I couldn't grasp it when I was young. I was maybe 10 or 11. Anyway, wasn't there a mention that the dwarf was a serial killer, and it was implied that Donald Sutherland's character was still in a bad state of mind and imagined that was his daughter?
I attempted to watch it again several years ago, with an adult mind, but as it started my gut said 'nope.'

@Walks_At_Night I watched the first 30-40 minutes, but then the phone rang and priority took over so I was unable to finish the film. They had just arrived in the woods at the point I turned off. With regards to your comment about leaving a mark; I asked my sister about the movie as she has watched it in its entirety. She told me that it's "one of those movies that you can't un-see"
Sounds like she had the same reaction you did. Is the last 60% of it really that disturbing?

Ok, so I watched the new M. Knight Shamabugger film - Knock At The Cabin
Some would say that it is a waste of a good premise. Perhaps it is, but I won't ruin for you and I'll say that it is IMO better than much of what he has put out per his last few movies. It is worth a watch. You won't wish for your time back because it's just good enough. Has its moments and I do like the premise. Bit of a Twilight Zone thing/scenario.
Now. There is one glaring issue. It's not rubbed in your face but the dude manages to check a few WOKE boxes with this latest offering.
- Same sex couple with an adopted daughter. Two white guys who have a 7 year old Asian daughter. AND they adopted her by being deceitful, but this has absolutely nothing to do with the story.

OOoh I have almost clicked on REC several times while scanning movie sections on all the streaming services. I have faith in your film judgments.
From what I can see Quarantine is mostly hand-held POV which pisses me off. What, 20 or more years since the Blair Witch and were still watching this shit? And yet I'll still watch. It'll be an Irish whiskey movie night.

Well, I know the header says Favorite Horror Films, but I'll leave this review here.
Two days ago I watched the latest 2022 Jordan Peele movie, NOPE. Peele is known for other films like Get Out, and US.
The title says it all as far as a review goes. It starts out great with a monkey on a children's show set ripping and smashing all the cast members to death. Blood, panic, and chaos set the tone for what will soon become a complete waist of time as the story goes into the void of a black cowboy who raises horses for the silver screen. Then, UFOs and aliens sort of make their way into the story. Ugh. Should you watch this film? NOPE! It's horrifically bland and pointless. Good Lord ::)
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
Also.. Peele is racist against crackers whites.

Watched a 'Horror Movie' yesterday that had the highest ratings in years for a horror film. In the 80% sort of thing.
Here's the thing; people these days must have almost zero frame of reference for what IS or ISN"T a great movie in this genre. It's like they need to be sent to watch all horror films from the 70's and early 80's the get based.
Un-said movie is called From Black, and it's not too bad. Establishes a somewhat creepy mood right away. Sort of a take on Pet Sematary, and it has its moments and but the ending pissed me off in that they could have taken another 10 minutes to really finish it off properly. It was worth watching. Once.

Un-said movie is called From Black, and it's not too bad. Establishes a somewhat creepy mood right away. Sort of a take on Pet Sematary, and it has its moments and but the ending pissed me off in that they could have taken another 10 minutes to really finish it off properly. It was worth watching. Once.
Did the horror hinge on the incorrect use of pronouns?

Is ANYONE going to watch POOH GO BAD?
I did. Pooh, Piglet, and one other are not the same since Christopher Robin left the 100 Acre Woods long ago. In fact, after Christopher's departure they went wild when a harsh winter came and this brought on extreme hunger. THEY ATE Eeyore in order to survive. This experience soured them beyond all hope. Anyone else going to take the dive? @bateman @Walks_At_Night ShayP would have dabbled..

$9.99 to rent the stream? I'm down but will wait until its free. In the meanwhile, I'll check out Santa Jaws (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8305692/) which will be freebie. After all.......

@TigerLily We were talking about the Exorcist and filming location. Here is the one I watched but there are a few others on YT.

I am going to confess to something, even though it seems like people love trashing M.Night, I still like his stuff on the most part. I haven't watched Cabin yet but I did watch Old on HBOMAX and I liked it, I was interested and the payoff "twist"/reasoning was fine with me. So yeah, I still look forward to his movies and will watch this once it gets on streaming

I tend to agree. I too look forward to his movies because he almost always has a great new idea and I fall for it every time. However, I also know that like always his movies start out out great, they will almost always begin to sissify in some way about halfway through. I tried to watch OLD but bailed. Considering taking another go at it because once again, I think he's got another cool idea in it.
Are you going to give Pooh-Bear a chance? @Zetaspeak ? Somebody has to. I don't want to be the only one.

Black lady Frankenstein. I don't know. Might not. Think I will.

After never seeing the human centipede movie I happened upon the Human Centipede II last night on TUBI. Got about halfway through and may finish it later. It's entirely in black n white and the main character is a very strange and physically odd specimen. Very short, very fat, and flat out just gave me the eebies. Not to mention he is extremely sick and evil and twisted. Weird little dude is, off. I saw a glimpse of what he gets up to later in the movie by dragging my mouse over the search line and it looked fucking nasty and disturbing.
Going to be one of those you can't unsee see it things.

LOL Don't sugarcoat it.
Yeah, I can't say that I am in any hurry to see the first one or even finish the second. I think that the realization that all the good movies and tales have already been made and told, leaving ambitious film makers with the seemingly obvious choice to go for the utterly disturbing and unimaginable mix of suffering and imagery that sticks in the mind after one watches these movies.
In short - Shock.

I enjoyed the hell out of both of these Panos Cosmatos films:

I did not see Pooh Bear. I did see a equally horrible movie called Covid-19: Invasion Lockdown. People with covid is locked in a building and I guess the government hired people to kill them lol.. I think that's how it went, it was hard to follow. On Tubi and watched it because I had to see how bad this movie was it has a 1.9/10 rating on IMDB lol. It was under 90 minutes so that's a plus ;D
Also watched 2015 The Witch on HBO/Max which of course was a much better movie. Not sure if it deserved the 90% on RottenTomatoes but it was fine.

No need to watch pooh bear.
The Witch was really good I thought. I'd give it a solid 8. It was dark and dirty, not to mention creepy, and I like that it was set in that particular time period. Like Evil Little House On The prairie.

Further in now. Our loveable main character uses a heavy grit sandpaper to whack off. In this movie the first HC movie is also a movie. Our freakish little man is taking it literally as he drools when he watches certain parts of it. Oh, and he's got a lead actress from the original movie to meet him as he has plans to use her as sequence 1 in his "real life" creation. This is getting odder and odder..

15 minutes in I knew I needed to turn on the closed captions because those accents were THICK ;D
Went back to the early pages of this thread an noticed "Neon Demon" I did watch that on Prime. Some of the visuals were really outstanding, but the whole thing felt a little bit of a Black Swan ripoff but it I liked it enough. The eyeball scene at the end was kinda fulfilling lol
Also saw an HBOMax documentary on SlenderMan about two young girls who killed their friend because Slenderman told them too. My Conclusion getting your spooky stories from Art Bell > Getting spooky stories from the internet

@TigerLily This was the new Exorcist movie I mentioned a little while back. Early reports that are found on YT are not very favorable. I don't know when they will stop trying to reinvent this particular wheel.

I hadn't watched the original in years. As we discussed I watched on TCM recently. Whole different experince than watching it on a big screen at a real movie theater. I saw it first at a midnite movie showing and was literally traumatized. Had to sleep with the lights on for three nights
But seeing this time (uncut and commercial free, as the man says) made it a completely different movie

Riiight.. that's what you told me. Um, that is not why I brought you here. I tagged you because you have Exorcist fresh on the brain and I told you of the new movie coming out, and as you see I included the trailer in my original post. That is what this is about! ::)
Like.. why is this so hard? @TigerLily

The played a preview of this when I watched Oppenheimer, I would say the trailer in the theater was MUCH better done and got some mumblings (I have no clue positive or negative though lol) when the end of the trailer started playing the Exorcist music/title.

Yeah, that's the thing about the music (Tubular bells) All these exorcist knockoffs use the music to try and give the thing some credibility. I just smell another bomb with this one.
There's only one Exorcist movie. That said, I did tell @TigerLily that Exorcist 3 was definitely worth watching. And I say that to you too @Zetaspeak Some incredible acting as well as a genuine creepy feeling.

Oh no.. I suspect you'll want your time back. It's fuckin' really stupid. I haven't seen it, just speculating.

Never liked horror movies, haven't seen many tbh, the only ones I did like were the original The Hills Have Eyes, and The Blair Witch Project - if that qualifies for the genre.
I'm not even sure what qualifies, for example was Jaws horror?
The thing about Blair Witch was it reminded me of some of my backpacking trips, with the worst events from all of them rolled into one movie.

Yeah. Not good. Ms. Kim with the big bazongas kind of saved it though.

I like Christopher Lee's distinction between horror films and terror films. Horror films focus more on nasty, unpleasant details, while terror films set out to scare the pants off you without necessarily showing anything.

Halloween is upon us and the streaming services point to just that with a shit ton of offerings. Problem is, most of these movies are indeed tons of shit.
Last night I stumbled across one from 2022 simply called, X. There is a real Texas Chainsaw Massacre thing going on (even the van they drive). It's shot with a grainy look as it tries to capture the 1972 look in which it takes place. Some pretty brutal stuff, and it has that hillbilly vibe to it.

There is a TENTH installment in the SAW franchise about to "drop" as they say. I thought the first one was great, but things went downhill from there. The new movie is different than the last 9 in that it is a sort of prequal. We'll now witness what originally happened to our main character and see first-hand what would drive him to do what he did.
The reviews are quite good as we have more of a story than blood and guts, which there still is of course. It is a much more intimate setting where the meat of the action plays out. I am actually looking forward to this one.

Thinking about mixing up a pitcher of Manhattans and watching Curse of the Demon/Night of the Demon. It has become an October ritual like listening to the Best of Bauhaus.

I remember an old B&W horror film about an old woman who would turn into a beautiful young woman by stabbing men in the neck with a special ring and drinking whatever liquid the ring brought out. Of course the men died. Any idea what this was?
