Title: Temperature - Your Local Weather
Post by: Up All Night on September 26, 2018, 10:54:46 AM
The first cold front of Fall has arrived today.  :D

It's 18 degrees cooler now than it was yesterday at this time. 66 vs 84F.

It feels better too. The Dew Point is 60 now, and it was 71 at this time yesterday.

Front's not going to make it through my neck of the woods so we still have another week and a half of summer left here in GA.  84 degrees right now.

Took me a few minutes to understand the weather report.  It said 94 tomorrow.  That didn't sound right, but we had a storm today so maybe a new weather system came in.  I thought about opening all the windows to let the cool night air in, kind of a pain this late at night, but boy am I glad I didn't do it.  Because I'm on the west coast, but the weather was for Texas, because that's where I got Coast to Coast AM tonight, lol.  What a relief.

@Up All Night   Great way to stay hydrated, for sure.

It's been hot and humid here in Richmond for what seems like an eternity.  Above 90 every day.  Heat index near 100 if not more at times.  Have a break coming up in several days where we'll have mid 80's and possibly some high 70's.  I can't wait to be able to open the windows at night.  ShayP loves the night air.

It’s true though! Whenever I’m UpCountry Maui I’m freezing in the evenings and morning and it’s only low 60s. I pack leg warmers and wool socks and sweaters to layer bc I get cold! Maybe it’s humidity?

Other than age, there might be some of the humidity aspect. I do remember, while living in the Las Vegas Valley, that sunlight was hotter on my skin.  For what it's worth, I am normally suffering from dry skin during winter and this year I'm not.

I thought part of the chill factor was lack of humidity. Maybe the presence of humidity is holding that cold temperature down.

Humidity plays a large role in how we feel temperature. With high humidity, 40F makes me ache. I can handle 20F in the mountains much easier than I can handle 40F on the coast.

Up where my woods are the humidity is typically lower than where I live by the coast. In the summer it gets much hotter here in the woods, but I can handle 100F in the woods easier than 93F in the humidity on the coast.  Especially if a breeze is blowing. In the woods if I go in the shade of a tree I actually feel cooler. Down on the bayou, if I go in the shade I start growing algae.

I carry around a spray bottle with water and mist myself while working outside. It doesn’t really work as well in high humidity.

I remember that people used to say your blood thins in warmer climates. I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that the type of body fat we carry changes based on the climate.  Not sure if either of those have a scientific basis.

All I know is we are currently having an ice storm here. I guess I should have gone home yesterday.

I did a search for it, but could not find the Tab Hunter routine that he did on the old ABC TV show, Fridays...

It would be very appropriate here. In case there is video available somewhere, I'm not going to spoil it.

In my woods in 100 miles south, we lost power Thursday at noon and it is still out. They don’t think they will get it restored until at least Wednesday. It’s been below freezing there since Wednesday night.

It just dropped below freezing down here in Galveston county. Supposed to get 3-5” of snow tonight. At least we still have power here.

Crazy crazy.

That's the problem with the South. Some times it isn't far enough south.
I feel like this should go in @Bart Ell 's coffee table book of SpiteBoard quotes.

About the same here in SE Texas.  Looks like we’ll get at least one more slightly cooling front tomorrow but Summer is knocking in the door.  My least favorite time of year.  Heat, humidity, and the possibility of hurricanes, with mosquitoes for even more fun.

@FISH.  I don't mean to butt in to your question to Annie, and also I don't know want to be an alarmist, but there might be a wildfire in her area and she and her family could possibly be on evacuation standby.  I hasten to add that her house could be far away from the fire and that she could be on vacation or taking care of some family business.  I hope that all is well with her, of course.

Hello! We are still ok. The fire is about 5 miles from our home. There have been evacuation warnings not to far away, but not for us. We spent yesterday getting ready to evacuate in case. Yesterday we read that today the winds might be gusty towards us, but so far the firefighters lines that they planned are holding. We will be in danger most from 1-9pm today. Well, so they say now. Today the management of this fire is being taken over by a type 2 incident management team. I don't know what that means in practical terms. It has been a bit difficult to get info because people clog things up with prayer hands and animated gifs that say THANK YOU. Both on Saturday and Sunday someone was sending their drone in to look around, causing immediate cessation of air fire fighting support because if a plane or helicopter hits the drone, they could crash. Someone saw the drone moron today and has reported him, so hopefully he won't hinder the fire fighting today.
And how are alla youse?  :)

Title: Re: Temperature - Your Local Weather

@Rikki Gins what is the latest news for the Mt. Shasta area?

@FISH.  The wildfire that caused Annie to evacuate her house is called the Lava Fire.  So called not because there are spots of molten lava coming out of the ground, but rather because there are fields of ancient lava rock scattered about the area of the fire.  (Mt. Shasta, like most of the larger mountains in the Pacific Northwest, used to be volcanos millions of years ago.)  We (I live to the north of Annie) had a big lightning storm last week and that is what started the fire.  The firefighters seem to be doing a good job of slowly containing the fire.  Yes, evacuation announcements were given to Annie and many other people that live in the area but the good news is that so far, the fire seems to be centered in steep, isolated, hard to reach areas.    I have yet to read of anyone's house being burned up.  Here's hoping that Annie will soon be able to return to her home.  Oh yes, I keep forgetting to add that I used to fight forest fires in my youth.

@Rikki Gins thanks for this explanation. Wildfires being called Lava Fire did not make much sense to me. I am going to send Annie a message. Her community must be helping people finding emergency housing. Wildfires, hot temperatures and no home. This does not sound like fun.
I hope her pets are safe.

Thanks, @FISH.  I'm glad to hear that.  Not as hot today, but still getting some afternoon winds here in the Pacific Northwest.  That is the worst thing that you want when fighting a forest fire.  Lots of firefighting and aerial retardant drops going on there, so hopefully they can get a handle on things.  My radio scanner app allows me to listen in as they fight the fire.

The Lava fire grew bigger last night due to pesky winds fanning the flames onto extremely dry grass and trees.  That was the bad news.  The good news is that thus far, the fire is progressing in isolated areas, meaning no houses are burning up.  As a matter of fact, I read that the firefighters succeeded in cutting the fire off before it could get into the surrounding communities.

Woke at 8:37 to the loudest thunder, clap? bang?  Whatever.  I briefly levitated like a possessed 12 yr old girl and I heard the dog do the same as she was suddenly waken in the the same way. It sounded like several rifles firing at the same time right from my window. Real wrath of God stuff as the very hard, almost sideways, rain has not let up in 90 minutes.

I have plans to install new baseboards today from a workstation that is set up outside. These conditions are going to have a negative effect on these plans.

You can view the snow falling at the free web site https://hdontap.com/

Just enter "tahoe" in the search bar. Another search option is "truckee".

There is also an option to view time-lapse footage.

I'm in the Northeast and it's some of the strangest most see-saw weather I ever seen. It goes from freezing to 65F to back to below 32F all in a week.  I couple of times I put away my light jacket thinking I will only need my coat and have to go grab it again.

Same here.  It was a high of 44 yesterday and then today it reached 65.  It actually felt warmer than that.  I had shorts and a t-shirt when I went out.

You must be close to my woods. I’ve experienced temperatures dropping like this a few times but normally accompanied by wicked storms as the front passes. Guess we got lucky with the La Nina this year. It kept the storms east of us.

National Weather Service Issues ‘Falling Iguana Alert’ in Florida

PUNTA GORDA, Fla.–This weekend is expected to be one of the coldest in four years for South Floridians, prompting the National Weather Service in Miami to issue a Falling Iguana Alert via Twitter.

Jan. 30 is predicted to be the coldest day locally since 2018.

South Florida occasionally sees temperatures dip into the 30s and 40s overnight, which causes the cold-blooded reptiles to become “temporarily stunned,” until temperatures warm up.  They are known to sleep in trees and when immobilized by the cold, they “stiffen and lose their grip on the branches,” and fall to the ground or sometimes on an unsuspecting passerby.

Iguanas are not indigenous to Florida and are considered invasive by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC).  Native to Central and South America and Mexico, they prefer warmer climates, making Florida ideal.  However, when temperatures reach 40 and below, they slip into a cold-induced slumber. Instead of dying, they thaw out and return to be a pest another day.

:P Misery today... 89F with a Dew Point of 74F
Title: Dew Point
Post by: Up All Night on May 17, 2022, 07:07:35 AM
From the US National Weather Service:

https://www.weather.gov/arx/why_dewpoint_vs_humidity

Dew Point vs. Humidity

The dew point is the temperature the air needs to be cooled to (at constant pressure) in order to achieve a relative humidity (RH) of 100%. At this point the air cannot hold more water in the gas form. If the air were to be cooled even more, water vapor would have to come out of the atmosphere in the liquid form, usually as fog or precipitation.

The higher the dew point rises, the greater the amount of moisture in the air. This directly affects how "comfortable" it will feel outside. Many times, relative humidity can be misleading. For example, a temperature of 30 and a dew point of 30 will give you a relative humidity of 100%, but a temperature of 80 and a dew point of 60 produces a relative humidity of 50%. It would feel much more "humid" on the 80 degree day with 50% relative humidity than on the 30 degree day with a 100% relative humidity. This is because of the higher dew point.

So if you want a real judge of just how "dry" or "humid" it will feel outside, look at the dew point instead of the RH. The higher the dew point, the muggier it will feel.

General comfort levels USING DEW POINT that can be expected during the summer months:

0 to 55: dry and comfortable

between 55 and 65: becoming "sticky" with muggy evenings

greater than 65: lots of moisture in the air, becoming oppressive

The Buffalo metro area was hit particularly hard, with some areas south of the city receiving more than 5 feet of snow by early Saturday. According to the National Weather Service, the suburb of Orchard Park, home to the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, reported 77 inches (196 centimeters) by early Saturday. About 80 miles (129 kilometers) northeast of the city, the town of Natural Bridge, near the Fort Drum Army base, reported just under 6 feet.

The inundation forced the National Football League to move Sunday’s game between the Bills and Cleveland Browns to Detroit.

The National Weather Service predicted partial sunshine and a break from the snow on Saturday in New York, but not for long.

“Later on this evening and through early next week, we’re expecting another round of lake-effect snow for much of western New York,” National Weather Service meteorologist Zack Taylor told The Associated Press.

Short Range Forecast Discussion
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
234 PM EST Mon Dec 19 2022

Valid 00Z Tue Dec 20 2022 - 00Z Thu Dec 22 2022

...Arctic air and dangerous wind chills to remain entrenched across the
Northern Plains over the next several days...
...Heavy snows likely across the Northern Rockies, Washington Cascades and
Olympic Range...
...Arctic air to surge southward Wednesday and Thursday into the Central
to Southern Plains and Upper to Middle Mississippi Valley along with
dangerous wind chills...
..Heavy rains possible along the Central to Eastern Gulf Coast...

A very active weather pattern on tap for the upcoming holiday week across
large portions of the nation.  The greatest impacts early in the week will
be across the northwestern quarter of the nation from the Northern Rockies
into the  Northern Plains.  Arctic air will remain entrenched over the
next two days across the Northern Plains where high temperatures will
remain below zero across much of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and
most of Minnesota and morning low temperatures will be in the -10s to -30
degree range.  In addition to the brutally cold temperatures, dangerous
wind chill values of 35 to 55 degrees below zero are possible into the end
of the week across these areas. Wind chill warnings and advisories are
currently in effect across these areas for most of the week.  In addition
to the cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills, heavy snows are also
possible along the arctic front as it sinks southward through the Northern
Rockies.  Heavy snows also likely from the Washington Cascades into the
Olympic Range.

This arctic air will begin to surge to the southeast on Wednesday and
Thursday across the Central and Southern Plains and into the Middle to
Upper Mississippi Valley.  Very large temperature changes likely in the
wake of this arctic front with temperatures 35 to 40 degrees colder
Thursday than on Wednesday across the Central Plains.  Similar to areas
farther to the north, dangerous wind chill values will spread southward
with this arctic air, with wind chill watches up across all of the Central
Plains into portions of the Southern Plains.

Gov. Greg Abbott, in a news conference Wednesday, was confident the state could handle the increased demand for energy as the temperatures dropped.

“I think trust will be earned over the next few days as people see that we have ultra-cold temperatures and the grid is going to be able to perform with ease,” he said.

The Bomb Cyclone sort of passed Denver by. We were on the edge of it so we had two very cold and windy days, and today things are almost T-shirt weather outside. Thankfully it is remaining cold enough for the next few days and the snow will remain for Christmas - tomorrow. Thoughts are with those in other places who are bearing the brunt of this.. Well, it turns out they have changed the way they measure temperatures.  They used to measure air temperature at some given number of feet above the ground.  Now they measure surface temperatures which are, of course, hotter.

Well, it turns out they have changed the way they measure temperatures.  They used to measure air temperature at some given number of feet above the ground.  Now they measure surface temperatures which are, of course, hotter.

Do you feel more comfortable now that you know this?

An Apogee Instruments infrared temperature sensor measures the infrared ground surface temperature (in degrees Celsius) at each station. The datalogger samples the sensor every two seconds. Every five minutes these two-second samples are averaged to obtain 5-minute values.

The most complete assessment ever of statistical uncertainty within the GISS Surface Temperature Analysis (GISTEMP) data product shows that the annual values are likely accurate to within 0.09 degrees Fahrenheit (0.05 degrees Celsius) in recent decades, and 0.27 degrees Fahrenheit (0.15 degrees C) at the beginning of the nearly 140-year record.

A rare blue supermoon, a type of full moon, is set to appear at the end of August.

The moon will be especially big and bright and rise above the Earth's horizon at around 222,000 miles away on the night of Aug. 30, according to NASA. The moon will be a supermoon, or a moon that appears to reach its perigee, the point where it is closest to the center of Earth.

The next blue supermoon is expected to occur January 2037, which is what makes this one rare.

Noticed that one of my fave National Hurricane Center forecasters, Stacy Stewart, wasn't in the rotation for this one.  Turns out he retired. He mentions he would have worked up to age 70, but he has alot of pain from an IED explosion in Iraq. He was a reserve Naval Officer and got activated and sent to Iraq and Afghanistan driving truck convoys around. Pretty wild that they sent a Navy weatherman for that kind of work.

There used to be a website that had all of the neighborhood temperature sensors online. It got down to a corner intersection kind of accuracy. It disappeared maybe a decade ago, I wonder if they actually disassembled the sensor stations or if it was just the website that stopped operating.
