Tipping is considered a sign of bad service in Japan. Of course, they actually pay their workers... Is it still done in America that most food places pay the waiters like $4 and expect them to make up the rest with tips?
Not quite that bad but yeah. A strange system but, in many cases, waiting tables is a side-job, entry level, student job, or a temporary thing (in theory) whereas in some other countries it is an actual job/career even and you can find the same waiters for years at a place and they really know the food, wine, location, etc.
