With DaaS Windows coming, say goodbye to your PC as you know it. How much are you going to like having Microsoft in charge of your desktop?

Microsoft is getting ready to replace Windows 10 with the Microsoft Managed Desktop. This will be a “desktop-as-a-service” (DaaS) offering. Instead of owning Windows, you’ll “rent” it by the month.

What I've noticed is those that have taken the plunge is that they get all angry and tell horror stories about 10, but when I join them in the hate they start defending it. I almost wonder if there is built in mind control in it.

I'm almost in a mode to complete all my projects started in 7 and bring them to fruition and hard copies and phase out computer/internet usage basically entirely. When I read about the DaaS - if that is where it is going, I want nothing to do with M$, period. Their thinking for about the last decade has been 180 degrees out of synch to my own. Its not like I can make a complaint, because the problems are philosophical and of overall design, not technical complaints about a driver or compatibility. As Hoagie would say, they are using the wrong model. Everything is being made more temporal, more complex behind the scenes, with less user control and forced upgrades. And the UI layouts are all made for phones, not for people trying to get things done.

How long will there be hardware to run air-gapped (non-connected) XP machines? Will they still exist as I enter my 70s? Then I think about BIOS batteries and the things that could kill a machine. Something has got to give here. This is getting ridiculous.

The great hope here is this:
https://www.reactos.org/

What kind of machine could I build in 2018 that could run air gapped until 2030 and beyond running something such as XP, Office 2003, etc? Think of it as the "Bunker Machine." The equivalent of COG - Continuity of Government for the personal computer user.

you cant build this machine. XP lacks the needed drivers and compatibility to even install properly on a 2018 machine (assuming new modern hardware). your better off with some version of linux or  a bsd.

Microsoft's name for it will be Skynet. One new feature is when you Shutdown or Sign Out, the audio will activate and say "I'll be back"  8)

I just had a Win10 update on my laptop. The dialog box said “Windows is a service”. I’ve never seen that before. It’s now a service, not a product.

LOL - Win-10 is already classified as a virus and a Bot-Net.

Almost 3 years old, but in case you haven't seen it...   https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2016/02/09/windows-10-data-tracking-spying-levels/

@ Dyna-X
I wouldn't doubt one bit there's some form of MK-Ultra designed right in to Win10. When you fire it up and watch the screen, it acts as a soporific.

(You might want to clear your History and clipboard, and only use one tab on a reloaded browser before visiting the following site...)
(Got Bleachbit ?)   ;)

A safer page:  http://www.theblackvault.com/documentarchive/cia-mkultra-collection/

Alternatives ?
Yeah, ReacOS has come a long way since I tried it last, But, you may want to check out this site, if you want to be 'FREE' from Doze. It's the best option out there for now. (Purism is working on it, but they're not there yet.)

https://minifree.org/product/libreboot-x200/

An older model laptop, but probably the best 'Bunker' lappy you can find.
Until Intel and AMD revamp their chip architecture, that is pretty much all we have, unless you want to build a pi laptop.  ;)

https://www.itnews.com.au/news/intel-release-first-meltdown-and-spectre-proof-cpus-513687  ?? (So they say - but not completely mitigated.)

This also may be worth checking out. It all depends on what you want your system to do.

I set up a separate Linux box, disconnected the LAN cable after installing software, and keep my financial information and intellectual property on it. I wish Linux could run more Windows programs. For instance, I’ve used Quickbooks to run my business for a decade. It won’t install on Linux - and I have the original installation discs.

Would you be interested in a Linux alternative, or do you want to get QB running on Linux. You've already bought and paid for the QB, and if it's an old enough version you won't need an internet connection to run it. Either way, I hope you have a shit-ton of RAM on that box, because QB is a memory hog.  ;)

Either way, I can probably help you with this.

There will be quirks though, as Doze likes to change it's file formatting between releases.
(Don't worry, I've worked through these before.)

I’ve tried to install QB and it simply won’t install I’ve searched online and find many complaints from folks who also fail to get it to install. I was able to use WINE to install Quicken 2008, so I suppose that will work just as well for keeping up with bank accounts, etc.

Wine is quirky. Sometimes you have to pull in required .dll's.
You don't need a full blown accounting app for an entire company, right ?
Just an application to handle personal accounting ?

While I'm compiling some info, take a look at this...     https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=217124

Edit:   Sorry for the wait. I was on another terminal.   ;)
