There was a legitimate concern that riots would ensue.
Eh, nevermind...

Ken Holtzman, mustachioed Cubs picture from the 1970s...

He was traded by the Cubs to the A's after the 1971 season, just in time to join the team that would win 3 straight World Series.  The 1972 rotation:  Vida Blue, Catfish Hunter, Ken Holtzman, Blue Moon Odom

As a publicity gimmick, A's owner Charlie Finley offered each player I want to say $500 to grow a mustache. He's also the one who bestowed nicknames like ''Catfish'' and ''Blue Moon'' on some of the players.

This was the early days of free agency, an arbitrator had ruled that the reserve clause binding a player to the team was no longer in effect after a year without a contract, so if a player didn't sign his contract and ''played out his option'' he would then become a free agent.  Nine of the A's refused to sign contracts for the 1976 season so Finley tried to trade them before losing them, trading Ken Holtzman along with Reggie Jackson to Baltimore.

An uncle lived in San Jose, so every year we'd visit and he'd take my brother and I to an A's game and a Giants game.

Dickey Betts - 80.
I remember Phil Walden telling me in 1968 he was putting together a band he thought would be pretty good.
I guess only Johnny is left.
Merry Christmas

Roman Gabriel - 83. Former NC State, Rams, and Eagles QB and Burger King spokesman back when it took two really big hands to handle a Whopper, which cost IIRC 48-cents.
Merry Christmas

Gabriel also had a TV and movie career, including "Gilligan's Island" and "The Undefeated" starring John Wayne and Rock Hudson.

I didn't follow the NFL - baseball only - in those years, but I remember getting his card in a pack and marveling at the name.  Nobody where I grew up, or anyone else in my card collection was named Roman.  And isn't Gabriel and angel.

Roman Gabriel was also the head coach and director of football for perhaps the worst professional sports franchise that has ever existed - the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks.  They were a team in the World Football League and existed for only one year - 1991. They never won a game and in reality only came close to a win once. I went to one game and it was awful to watch. Bobby McAllister of Michigan State was the QB. He was rather a poor player in college and certainly didn't improve as a professional.  The team colors were red, white, black and green which looked rather horrid to boot. I imagine there are other professional franchises that never won a game in their history but the Suckhawks were an example that I had experience with.
