I don't know about the whole karma thing but thanks. I recall driving to Vegas with friends and introducing them to Art over beers and long road trip there (kids don't do this) and the late night on the way to Vegas and they were mesmerized. "Who IS this guy?" "What the HELL?" A perfect storm: in the desert, middle of nowhere, listening on AM which would break-up a bit and I'd manually tune back in (old "dual knobby" car radio) and some crazy spooky topic and an electric storm. Was awesome. Better than Vegas was in recollection.
@albrecht
Better than Vegas! Somewhere in time, my employer offered to send my supervisor and me to a conference in Vegas. My supervisor asked if I would teach her how to play casino craps while in Vegas. She only knew how to play street craps. I could not wait to listen to Art Bell live from Pahrump. I was only an hour’s drive away from “Things That Go Pahrump in the Night.” I don't remember what Art Bell shows were playing while I was in Vegas. I remember being almost star stuck hearing Art Bell’s thunder clap sound while I was so close by. “Magic in the static”. My home was/is over 2,500 miles away from Pahrump.
Back to the conference. I had trouble staying awake. As I would be falling asleep, my supervisor would stab me with her pencil. In my defense, the speakers were some hippies from California. I do not dislike hippies. However these hippies were too far out for me.
Back to the casino. My supervisor learned how to play casino craps. Standing at a crap’s table, one of the players took some cash from out of his shoe. My supervisor stopped playing craps. She whispered to me “I am not playing with someone who is using his shoe money.”  I knew that she understood the psyche of a craps table. You only play craps with people who are not desperate for cash, either in a casino or in the streets.

That's really funny about the pencil! Oh, unless it was not the eraser side.  :o
Perhaps money makes a good arch support, in which case you only play craps with people with healthy feet?

And Art was great at it.

There's something about shared experience, in this case knowing there were millions of others listening at the same time, or perhaps it's the idea that the show is live and they won't be rebroadcasting it.  Going back and listening now wouldn't be the same.
@PB
Going back to listen is not the same. I listen to Art Bell’s old shows. For me it is like looking at my old family photos. At times, I am able to recall the moments. However it was not the same as living the moment.
I remember listening to the live shows. There were times, I would wonder how many people are listening. It was part of the psychic of listening to his live show. I was part of a very large group. We did not have easy access reaching Art Bell. We had fax machines, emails, AOL chat rooms and home phones. I would go into AOL's Grassy Knoll chat room, looking for Art. There was room for mystery about Art Bell.
Verses today. We have social media and no more mysterious host talking talking on the "air waves".

Hello @anniem , I am slowly making my way in here. I was just getting ready to respond to one of your comments. My supervisor was a tough lady. She used the sharp end of her pencil. I really like her.

I think it worked out better when there was some mystery about the entertainer in question, whether that was Art Bell, ballplayers, or Hollywood folks.  I sure liked sports a lot better when the only time we heard from the athletes was a few minutes in an interview after the game.

Absolutely @PB . No wonder no one wants to watch the Academy Awards. I use to like De Niro's movies.

My mother lives in Las Vegas. My father liked to play blackjack, while my mother preferred to play the poker machines. I don't like gambling, so I'd just watch. Casinos are interesting places, lots of good people watching. Now the machines are all electronic, winnings are added to cards as opposed to falling loudly out of the machine, which added to the whole casino thing if you ask me. Kinda sad.

Right! Same for hollywood celebrities. There are a few whose work I won't even bother watching because things they have said are so insanely stupid.

But it was fun having it on in the background while doing something else and laughing at some of the claims his guests were reporting. Satellites in orbit that can get a picture down to several meters with infer red, night vision, and FLIR heat recording capabilities and still no Bigfoot selfies. Oh well. I guess I'll have to rely on some guy out hunting rabbit to get us an eyes on Bigfoot count that technology can't. :)

@Starman2018 , listening to a live show was great fun and entertainment. The Internet was an infant. No social media. No TV series on ghost hunting. No cell phones. Looking back it was like we believed that the earth was flat with lots of fascination and wonder.
2019 and still no photos of Bigfoot. Sorry @wr250 .

Casinos would "shut down" and the money train would come to empty out the machines. My hands would be get so dirty from the coins. Casinos would set aside 2 hours for free craps classes. Baccarat lessons were every 15 minutes.

But that's functionally no different than the dearth of apparent imagery of UFOs, is it? So what are we left with, massive holographic manipulations, stacked dimensions of varying solidity, or could it be that the "powers that be" have a real tight hold on their own death star technology?

I can confirm as much, there was a palpable element of the shared unknown, like an unboxing done somewhere out there and then told to us around a virtual campfire.

You listen to reruns of Art, and they are simply reruns. The magic has occurred and is gone.

But maybe the same is true for old time radio and we just need to let Art's programs age into cognac, not just brandy.

I had no idea there was a money train or classes. That is a great idea. My last few visits did not include casinos, too much health business to take care of.  :P

Many of the interviews were also cutting edge, the topics being things I had never heard of. Nothing new anymore.

I’ve been going to Vegas since 2000, the tail end of the coin era. The smell fo coins is an odd smell, but it reminds me of Vegas. I used to collect the coin buckets and bring them home. I used to love plopping a bucket full of coins into a hopper to get them changed up or taking the bucket to the cage! Bellagio used to give away very elegant gloves you could wear so your hands didn’t get dirty.

Because of the jet lag and my extreme excitement my first few days in vegas would start at around 3am - this is the time they empty all the machines of bills and the quietest time in the casino. I love that time, it’s and i can wander around with no crowds.

I’d always ring home about 4 am - midday at home. We always stay downtown I knew exactly where all the webcams and traffic cams were downtown, and I would often ring hom tell them which cam to bring up, get off the line, go wave for 5 minutes then ring them back!

Not been for a few years, I miss downtown!
Give pees a chance.
