Most of the astronaut simulator training was accomplished at JSC using two fixed base and one motion based simulators. Moffet Field (Ames) has a very unique simulator called the Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS). It provided a real “seat of the pants” feel for simulated Shuttle landings, especially when simulating blown tires and crosswind landings. It didn’t have a high fidelity cockpit. And it didn’t have actual Shuttle seats.

I flew the simulator with Dick Covey after Dick had retired as an astronaut. It was quite an experience.

The hangar is still there. Today I believe Google leases it from NASA.

last i had heard was that it had to be torn down, but was being restored. i mainly recall it being really big and full of bats. you could feel the "pressure" of the bats screeching on your ear drums. the clam-shell doors were still operational when i was stationed there and would be opened during the various airshows. i flew a Beechcraft  Bonanza thru it a few times.... in a micorsoft flight sim.  8)

There's not even 200 of them.  Makes one wonder why they wouldn't have moved them well before the storm.

They flew out as many as they could. I saw one report that says there may have been 22 that weren’t flight worthy. I saw some aerial footage that clearly showed some in hangars that had collapsed. Looked like C-130s and maybe P-3s in the hangars as well.

Hey, let's hope it was the non-functioning "not always flight-worthy"  F-22s were the ones lost?
