Yet, there are over 11 "light festivals" in California every year - and probably many more!

L.A. Marzulli apparently has lost his house in one of these awful fires, as reported on C2C the other night. Not sure what alien "evidence" might have gone up in smoke. Also other celebrities like Neil Young, Miley Cyrus, etc also. Worse, because they are insured and got away, many dead and worst fires yet, apparently.

So far we have been lucky down here in San Diego. We have had low humidity but no high winds. That changed last night. The wind was howling so loud it woke me up and continues today. Yesterday while I was out I saw smoke from a decent sized fire on the other side of our hills. And last night I saw a little way off a small fire growing quickly in a culvert by the side of a road. Probably started by a cigarette butt. Humidity is down to 24% and the wind is gusting like a mother. I can't see or smell any smoke from my house. But I'm afraid to turn on the local news

Was talking with someone who lives north and east of San Diego (but still in San Diego County) and the consensus is they are safe for the moment but they are keeping a close eye on the news as winds can dramatically change things quickly. One of the lesser known casualties of the wildfires are the now-homeless animals. We are getting reports of thousands of displaced animals, including dogs, cats, pigs, horses, and more :( Escape plans should always include pets and other animals.

So true. Maybe we can ask @Bart Ell if he would like to make a Southern California or California animal welfare agency the clickacy charity for next month

I think the charities are already booked up through February but this would be a good addition.

Some family in Calabasas had to evacuate but, so far, their neighborhood and house is ok. Some folks I know in Woodland Hills could see the Malibu fires at their peak and sent me a crazy panorama video, apocalyptic and surreal, but are so far, far enough away and no evacuation orders or fires right nearby. Here is a map where you can see the various fires, however, I don't know how quickly they update and some of the fires have been moving quickly with the winds so if in area pay more attention to local news and radio etc. Be safe all....

L.A. Marzuli is a little nuts in my book. I guess that he is now a homeless now. Maybe he could move in with Falkie?
I saw this about the fires in the LA area. https://www.rt.com/usa/443903-wildfire-toxic-nuclear-site/

Yeah, Mazulli in my opinion is a huckster but I still don't like folks, even the brazen Hollywood leftist hussies and politcal funders, to have homes burnt. And especially the honest folks, animals, businesses, ranches, and, as you, Mr.Joker, mention the possible real bad environmental stuff! I hope they get the fires under control. And also figure out future mitigation (proper forestry, PG&E management, housing development, illegals, homeless camps, and even terrorism and sick firebugs.)
-
Hallelujah! Overcast here today. Looks like the Santa Ana has broken. At least down here. Hope the worst is over now although it will take time to get the fires contained. Bless our Firefighters
Dammit! They promised me an El Niño, not Supercharged Santa Anas. Now if we get any decent rain the mudslides will be horrendous again
-
ISIS is now taking credit for the fires and promises more.
-
Aaak. Spoke too soon. Overcast was gone by 9:00. Hot and dry again - currently 22% humidity. It's giving me (another) headache. At least the wind has stopped
Yeah. Must be ISIS ::)

They take credit for everything so call me skeptical. Though Spain, Greece, etc has had a history of "migrants" setting fires, as have we. Homeless also. And just crazy firebugs. But often, as seems to possibly be the case at least in one case, faulty electric grid maintenance (hey Norry get on this. ;) ) are often a cause. As are accidents like discarded cigarettes, trailer chains, welding, and field work. Frankly I'm surprised when they can identify the source of some of these wild fires but, apparently, they can.

When the winds whipped up so badly in San Diego (gusts up to 80 mph) SDGE shut power off in some areas due to concern that power lines might fall. A pain but very smart

Yeah, better safe than sorry and some inconvenience rather than risk some more fires. A few years back one of our bad fires was started by the wind knocking a line down and another was a guy on his tractor shredding and the chains hit a rock and another who was welding. Or so they say, in the latter ones it was reported by the guys but spread so quick it was too late to put out before it spread. It is amazingly scary how quickly fires can move. One time I saw a fire start up in the median from someone's trailer chain drooping down on the highway and sparking. It was put out quickly and had nowhere to go but it is not hard in dry conditions for things to start. Keep safe.

Back in 1998, there were severe forest fires across northeast Florida where I lived. The combination was heavy rainfall in the winter leading to heavy underbrush growth, then a late spring drought, low humidity and high winds. There was a guy from one of the state's universities that had developed a fire resisting compound. He went out and sprayed it on a couple of houses near Daytona Beach, and while the forest and homes surrounding them burned to the ground, these two houses survived with only singing. I wonder what happened to that stuff.

New stuff? I know they drop fire retardant all the time on fires but maybe there are different kinds. Sadly a lot of times bureaucratic rules inhibit fire-fighting I see this happened in California recently also.

There are a few companies that make that if I recall correctly. One was a spray on liquid that you would coat your house's exterior with, another was a gel product to apply to the exterior, and there was also a foam based product. They supposedly worked well when embers in the air would land on the house, they would not allow the fire to spread to the structure.

Just look at the smoke in the Manhattan District of New York, around two o'clock this afternoon. From those fires up in Canada.

Okay as an east coaster I at times think you west coasters exaggerate the "East Coast bias" BUT yeah you are right :D. The huge national top story (until you know what lol) with minibox of northeast map with giant purple smoke air blob coming down must make the southwest yell "WTF, we been dealing with this for a decade and most of the time we just get the "in other news..." treatment. Especially some rightwing outlets/politicians saying Canada needs to fix this and deal with it, but when it happens in California they tell you to rake the leaves and withhold aid.
-
The people affected in the northeast are simply more important that you west coasters.

There will be plenty to burn, come August - September.

Lahaina fires update 9 p.m. HST
https://www.mauicounty.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?aid=12682
Firefighters continue working to extinguish flare-ups and contain fires in Lahaina, Pulehu/Kihei and Upcountry Maui.
The number of fatalities is at 80.
A Ka’anapali fire reported above Puukolii at 6:10 p.m. Friday was reported to be 100 percent contained before 8:30 p.m. The fire is in the area where a county fueling station was positioned Friday to distribute an estimated 3,000 gallons of gas and 500 gallons of diesel for an estimated 400 vehicles that were lined up before the operation began. No fuel will be distributed Saturday.
Police are restricting access into West Maui through both Ma’alaea and Waihe’e. Honoapiilani Highway is open for vehicles leaving Lahaina. The burned historic Lahaina town area remains barricaded, with people warned to stay out of the area due to hazards including toxic particles from smoldering areas. Wearing a mask and gloves is advised.

Pain, anger as Hawaii fire death toll climbs to 89
https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230813-pain-anger-as-hawaii-fire-death-toll-climbs-to-89-1
Over 2,200 structures were damaged or destroyed as the fire tore through Lahaina, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said, wreaking $5.5 billion in damage and leaving thousands homeless.
Hawaiian authorities said they were opening a probe into the handling of the inferno as a congresswoman from the state acknowledged that officials had underestimated the danger, and as residents said there had been no warnings.
"The mountain behind us caught on fire and nobody told us jack," Vilma Reed told AFP.
"You know when we found that there was a fire? When it was across the street from us."
Reed, whose house was destroyed by the blaze, said they had fled the flames with what they had in their car, and were now dependent on handouts and the kindness of strangers.

Everyone should stop complaining about the response... /s
Biden's FEMA Chief, Deanne Criswell told reporters during a briefing at the White House Monday that she believes the government has enough resources and staff on the ground in Maui.
"At this point, I have no awareness of anything that we have not been able to meet, and we'll continue to build up our presence here on the island to support this," Criswell said when asked by ABC News' Mary Bruce if there were any delays.

With some 1,300 people still missing following destructive wildfires on Maui, the death toll is expected to rise in the coming days. "CBS Evening News" anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell reports on the devastation and recovery from Maui.

Surfer Kai Lenny slams government response after devastating Maui wildfires: "Where are they?"
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/maui-wildfires-surfer-kai-lenny/
Kai Lenny, a professional surfer and a Maui local, has stepped up in the aftermath of devastating wildfires as frustrations mount over what many residents believe is an inadequate government response. He is leading one of many citizen-run recovery efforts on the island, saying people in the fire zone have told him they haven't seen a government employee in days.
He told CBS News that "some of us ... were kinda sitting back, waiting for help to arrive, and then nothing was sorta happening."
"We were just in shock," he said.
People contacted Lenny, citing a lack of help in their areas. He said he received texts and messages from friends asking if he could help, which led to his "boots on the ground" effort — bringing supplies to those in need with the goal of holding friends and family over until "the caravan arrives with everything."
"And it was just like, day after day, 'Where are they?'" he said.
"I haven't seen one state, one county, one federal official at any one of the donation hubs where people are most suffering," he said. "People are sleeping in their cars. People are asking for specific items now."
Lenny likened the west side of Maui to "a third-world country" and said locals there say no one has come to help them.
"The Hawaiian people, the locals that have lived here, they just always feel like they're the last to be thought of. And they're like, the foundation of it," he said.
Lenny said volunteers, some of whom lost their own homes and loved ones, have worked day and night at shelters and distribution centers.
"I wonder if the state, county, they believe we're doing such a good job, they don't need to step in," he said. "But a lot of these volunteers have been going all day, all night for five, six days now and are exhausted and are waiting for a handoff, or at least a break."

Firefighters in Greece battling 'largest wildfire ever recorded in EU'
