A pear of melons that were on a real peach would be berry fine.

The celery stalks at midnight.   ;D

I got a bunch of fruit from what I thought was a Mandarin Orange tree. However the fruit is substantially bigger than the stuff sold in stores and the peel is not the bright orange. The taste is also far more tart or sour. The tree is about 10ft tall and approximately 6 years old. We've had a substantial amount of rain the past month and I'm told too much rain and less drainage and less light can make oranges more sour?  But I also see that there are varieties of oranges that are sour (apparently used for liquors, perfume, herbal remedies, etc.) So who knows?

There is an orange tree called the Bitter Orange, also know as the Sour Orange.  I wonder if that is the kind of tree that you have?

Thanks, I was thinking of that but the tree has no thorns and the fruit seems larger. Though from simple research, that is online search haha, it would appear hybridization is common in citrus and after hard freezes a "new" variety can even grow up because of grafting etc. Who knows? I ate one and it wasn't bad, but sour/tart but still "orangey" taste, an interesting taste. Might appeal to the kids these days what with their apparently love for "sour" candy? Shall I give them out for Halloween trick-or-treaters?

Mandarins are a type of satsuma. If they are easy to peel they are probably satsuma but some types are more sour than others.

Thanks. I'm guessing you are right. Fruit is large, coming in early, easy to peel, and no seeds in the one I ate.  The only thing is the coloration and sour/tartness but it is mentioned that rootstock most often used in South TX is "sour orange" and different varieties of satsumas.  Also some sites say that too much rain can result in more sourness. And we've had that the past month. Some of the fruit was even busted open like melons do with too much water. So who knows?

Just for you, I will post an aggie site with more information:

Weslaco is a name derived from the W. E. Stewart Land Company. It is halfway between McAllen and Harlingen in South Texas near the Rio Grande.

David Spielberg who played Ted in Bob & Carol, Ted & Alice graduated HS there.

Thanks, Gravity.  I wonder what they were mixing there?

Probably Texas oranges and Ruby Red Grapefruits. No idea really. Don’t see them much anymore but when I first moved here in 72 you would see people parked on the side of the road selling oranges and grapefruit. I’ve seen that in Florida before too.
