Vinny Barbarick was eighteen or so when his parents died in a car accident in California (Olives?)  So Vinny was influential in deciding the aftermath.  Vinny has never divulged the entire (true) story, but he has claimed that he was in control of various family assets including properties and that his brother and sister were not.

In other words, Vinny controlled the financial aftermath and the outcome involved the sale of properties and individual assets in the form of trust funds.

Vinny then joined the Church of Scientology and disappeared for a decade, married, and then surfaced in Florida where he divorced and headed for New York in the late 1980s. He married again and pursued his Montauk hoax in the 1990s using the name "Peter Moon".  Moon would divorce again and then suddenly marry a Romanian Gypsy woman half his age.
