The submersible usually carries a pilot, three paying guests, and what the company calls a "content expert".

The trip sets sail from St John's in Newfoundland, which is around 370 miles (600km) from the wreckage site. Each full dive to the wreck, including the descent and ascent, reportedly takes around eight hours.

The OceanGate website lists three submersibles it owns, and only the Titan is capable of diving deep enough to reach the Titanic wreckage.

The vessel weighs 10,432 kg (23,000 lbs) and, according to the website, can reach depths of up to 4,000m and has 96 hours of life support available for a crew of five.

A vessel called the Polar Prince, which is used to transport submersibles to the wreckage site, was involved in the expedition, its owner told the BBC.

David Pogue, a CBS reporter who travelled in the Titan submersible last year, told the BBC about the issues that both the submersible crew and the land crew are likely to be experiencing, saying that there is currently "no way" to communicate with the vessel as neither GPS nor radio "work under water".

"When the support ship is directly over the sub, they can send short text messages back and forth. Clearly those are no longer getting a response," Mr Pogue said.

He added that because the passengers are sealed inside the vessel by bolts applied from the outside, "there's no way to escape, even if you rise to the surface by yourself. You cannot get out of the sub without a crew on the outside letting you out."

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia said the vessel was reported overdue around 9:13 p.m. Sunday, about 435 miles (700 kilometres) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Lt. Cmdr. Len Hickey said a Canadian Coast Guard vessel and military aircraft were assisting the search effort, which was being led by the U.S. Coast Guard in Boston.

You can see the interior of the thing here:

It's steered by an X-Box controller and there are no seats. For this you pay $250k.

The submersible was operated by OceanGate Expeditions.

David Concannon, an adviser to OceanGate, said the submersible had a 96-hour oxygen supply starting at roughly 6 a.m. Sunday. In an email to The Associated Press, Concannon said he was supposed to be on the dive but could not go due to another client matter. He said officials were working to get a remotely operated vehicle that can reach a depth of 6,000 meters (about 20,000 feet) to the site as soon as possible.

ROV sees the sub conked out on the bottom.  Then what?

ROV sees the sub conked out on the bottom.  Then what?

I believe that the ROV can be equipped with a cutting device, so if the sub is caught on something, it might be possible to cut it loose.  Conversely, if the ROV doesn't see the sub anywhere, then there is a good chance that it was able to rise to the surface and is waiting to be tended to after being spotted.  Frankly, I think that everyone was dead once the pings stopped being heard.  Just like The Thresher and The Scorpion...a  flooding casualty.  One pinhole leak would be all it would take at those depths.  The sub would implode and the people inside wouldn't know what hit them.

Who's onboard the Titan submersible ? ?

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-65955554

British adventurer Hamish Harding 58, chairman of aircraft firm Action Aviation, is a renowned explorer who has flown to space and holds three Guinness World Records.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Dawood family in Pakistan said: "Our son Shahzada Dawood and his son, Suleman, had embarked on a journey to visit the remnants of the Titanic in the Atlantic Ocean.

"As of now, contact has been lost with their submersible craft and there is limited information available."

French explorer Paul-Henry Nargeolet is also thought to be on board, according to a Facebook post by Mr Harding before the dive started

Stockton Rush, chief executive of OceanGate, is also widely reported to be on the vessel.

Titanic death toll is still going up.

I read that on one of those tourist dives, the boat overhead didn't give the sub proper guidance and they never found the wreck. Now look, if you can't find the entire fuckin Titanic without having someone hold your dick for you the whole way, what chance do they have of finding that itty bitty sub without even knowing where it might be?

Apparently it didn't have the SUBSUNK beacon that real submarines have that should be triggered when the worst happens or if it did, it wasn't deployed. It's not like the ocean floor is a big parking lot - that little bugger could be in any crook or crevice.

If someone with a lot of money wanted to fake their death, this is one helluva way to get away with it...

Eh, nevermind...
