I enlisted for 6 years and then extended for 23 months to get them to allow me to crosstrain into computer programming. I have 2 USAF Commendation medals and 1 Joint Service Commendation medal. I wanted a Joint Service Meritorious Service Medal but my organization would only give those to officers.

I also enlisted for 6 (in May 1984)  I "sold back" 45 days of leave not taken because I was deployed for 21 months.....and they offered and "early out" of 30 days if you were not "matriculated" into a college program.

I also had about 5k in US Saving Bonds .....

I was an E5. I refused to test my last year for E6 because I knew I would make it but wouldn’t have actually pinned it on until after my separation date. I got my degree at night right as my enlistment was ending and I knew there was no chance of me reenlisting. I had 89 days terminal leave saved up and I started working for McDonnell Douglas 10 days after I out processed. I am surprised I survived those 3 months of terminal leave. Getting two pay checks for 3 months was the first time in my life I actually had spending money.

I thought about going to OCS but they were going to request me by name to do the same job I was doing as an E5. I wanted to work in the space program much more than I wanted to keep working in Onaha.

Thanks. I served in the relative comfort of the cold war. I never had to deploy. The guys and gals that were in (or entered after) the first gulf war and since have all of my respect. Those reservists never expected to have to endure multiple deployments.

I’m proud of my service but I will shake the hand of anyone I see in uniform today. Even Marines.

After 15 months Marine Security duty on Luzon (there were several incidents involving deaths of US Personnel both accidental and "patrol related engagements with NPA" .....Article 32 investigations....while competing for meritorious promotion to E-4.   Then assigned to 3/6 Weapons Co...who were returning from jungle training in Panama as I arrived/reported.  How ironic is that?
