Calling all ship nerds

An interesting event may happen up on Lake Superior today. Marinetraffic.com is showing M/V Stewart J. Cort headed to Superior, Wisconsin as normal to pick up Iron Ore. What is not normal is the projected route.  It is showing her as planning to use The Portage (a weird river/lake/canal) that traverses the Keweenaw Pennisula instead of taking the usual route up and around it.  Very unusual if this pans out.  M/V Stewart J. Cort was the first 1,000 foot iron ore carrier on the Great Lakes and if she takes The Portage, she'll have to go under the lift bridge that separates the towns of Houghton and Hancock.  Should be quite a sight. I think it is more likely that the Cort will dock in Marquette and pick up iron ore there.

I have no idea why they would take the proposed route if they are really headed to Superior, WI.  One reason might be weather but looking at the Duluth Canal Webcam the lake is very calm.

Thanks for that, Walks.  Brings back some real nostalgia for me.  I spent the summers with my Dad who was a grain hauler all of his life.  Spent a good portion of the summers in Superior.

Awesome. That must have been a great time.  Not so good to have your Dad away so much but great way to spend a summer I bet.

If she takes that route, the Michigan Tech webcams will have some great views.

Not much fun to be stuck in traffic - waiting.  No doubt about that.

At least the ALHAMBRA CREEK BRIDGE  was mildly amusing.

It's too funny that Falkie thinks he lives on the San Francisco Bay.

He doesn't.  Martinez is on the Carquinez Strait, which flows into the San Pablo Bay a several miles away.

More bridges should be as out of sight as he has been for the last 30 years.

Might have been fun to find out but looks like they weaseled. Looks like maybe port congestion at the ore docks so they are taking their time.  Only making 6 knots.  Guess they would rather move slowly than hang outside the harbor in Duluth.
