How much did you get for it?

What is happening here:  John Webster continued his conversation with Dolores and later that night, went down the rope and onto the street and made his way to Mother Jenk's place where he had a secret meeting with Ricardo Ruey and two other planners for the forthcoming revolution.  John asked them to fill him in on their plan of campaign and there followed a rather lengthy description of all the maneuvers and planned battles that would be taking place in a couple of weeks.  John told them that he had ordered a large Ford truck that would be converted into an armored car equipped with guns and that there would be lots of crates of shovels and drilling equipment arriving, and that the crates would actually be holding weapons.  Ricardo told John that the ship carrying the American mercenaries was being held on an island off of Cuba and that $40,000 dollars would be needed for various palm greasings so that the ship could be released.  John said that he would send the money in the morning, but that he hoped for a good return on his investment.  The men talked a bunch more and then John returned to his hotel and the rope, under cover of darkness.

I read that lots of them had been melted down for scrap metal during World War I.
