This is so cool. The ship being loaded (Lee A. Tregurtha) must be kin to the Paul R. Tregurtha seen in an episode of the wonderful program "Mighty Ships".

Sadly youtube seems to have that episode mislabeled or just missing.

I have ridden on that train.

I rode it in the summer of 1974 as a side trip, on my visit to Mesa Verde National Park.

That was even before they opened the Eisenhower tunnel.

Fascinating video, esp. the caboose snow plow. I had no idea that train even ran in the winter, thought it to be a summers only venue. That part of Colorado used to get a lot of snow- pre-drought anyway.

Here's an interesting tidbit on its recent operations:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durango_and_Silverton_Narrow_Gauge_Railroad

In June 2018, the railroad shut down for several weeks due to a wildfire, dubbed the 416 fire, which was fought by two airtankers, six helicopters and some 400 firefighters on the ground. An estimated 54,000 acres of the San Juan National Forest were burned, with losses estimated at more than $31 million. Given the fire risk from coal cinder-sparked wildfires, the railroad's owner plans to invest several million dollars to replace coal-power with oil-power for the locomotives and acquire diesel-powered locomotives. The railroad was suspected of sparking the blaze and some area businesses and residents filed a civil lawsuit against the railroad and its owner in mid-September.

In March 1997 Bradshaw sold the D&SNG to First American Railways, Inc., located in Hollywood, Florida. Then in July 1998 the railroad was sold again to American Heritage Railways. At the time American Heritage Railways was headquartered in Coral Gables, Florida. Since then their headquarters have been moved to Durango, Colorado. The D&SNGRR has two museums, one each in Durango and Silverton.

I'm presuming the sale and subsequent move to abandon coal must be efforts to blunt that lawsuit. Be interesting to know where that lawsuit is on the docket these days. By any measure it's good the line soldiers on but a real shame to see steam power lost.

I could watch and fantasize about these all day! The guy does some great camera work for a "hobo" and there are worse combinations than a freight train, a pizza and a 12 pack of cold beer (Illinois to Denver video).

That was even before they opened the Eisenhower tunnel.

Not so.

I traveled through the tunnel on a trip to Breckenridge Ski Resort by way of Denver in Dec. of 1973.

Quote
March 8, 2013, marked the 40th anniversary of the dedication and opening of the westbound bore—or the Eisenhower Tunnel—, which is the highest vehicle tunnel in the world at 11,155 feet. The Eisenhower Tunnel was the first of two bores to open to help facilitate easier transportation between Colorado's eastern and western slopes.

The pilot bore was completed in 1964.  The Eisenhower Memorial Bore took five years to complete and was dedicated March 8, 1973.  The eastbound Edwin C. Johnson Bore took four years to complete and was dedicated December 21, 1979.

I guess I should have known that. I was stationed at Lowry AFB from February through May of 1975. I didn’t have a car but now that I think of it they did have one side open.

I still try to drive up over the pass past A-Basin on Hwy 6 or whatever it works s at least once a year. Sure is pretty up there.

I've been following the Avalanche situation in Colorado for the last several days. The Amtrak/SP line wasn't affected as it takes a Northerly route as compared to I-70 / Hwy 6 west out of Denver.

The Arapahoe Ski Basin was unreachable all day today.

Here's some steam video that I watched part of today. Enjoy !

This 4K video posted by Neil Dahl is a whistle blowing masterpiece!

He paces the UP Big Boy #4014 beside Hwy 2154 from Navasota to College Station, Texas, with the UP George Bush engine #4141 running with it.

I was in a town once when one of those steam engines came through giving rides.  I was amazed at how it covered downtown with smoke. How awful air pollution must have been when 100-trains a day came through.

If it was then it would have been known as The Industrial Picnic.

This Tuesday, August 2nd, Story TV has announced "Trains Unlimited" -- an all day feature of 8 train related shows, repeated twice that day.

This link will have those programs listed for the upcoming Tuesday, Aug. 2nd programming.

Story TV is seen on OTA TV stations. That is how I watch it.

Shoestring Hobo has a youtube channel. He isn't really a hobo, he is retired from the rail lines I think. He has had some medical issues lately but he likes to ride the rails all over the USA.
