Title: 2019 NFL Season
Post by: ShayP on August 06, 2019, 02:49:29 PM
Anybody have the fever yet?  I'm looking forward to the Steelers as usual, but even more since some of the cancer has been eradicated from the locker room.  If they don't make the playoffs again, I still think Tomlin should be fired.  I could give a damn about his overall winning percentage.  McCarthy from Green Bay got fired and there isn't too much of a difference in their respective stats as coaches.

Andrew Luck announced his immediate retirement.

He was 100% into football. He now has a new family (child on the way) and want to be 100% into that.

Andrew Luck story is kind of sad. Great QB (a regular pick on my fantasy league) but the last few years there was a never ending injury, rehab, re-injure. That can be so demoralizing.

There was this guy (I think some radio host) who was critical of Luck in retiring and it was great that normally mild manner Troy Aikman ripped that guy apart

@Walks_At_Night  Yeah. I may just be mad!   ;D   You have a point.  Matt Patricia is awful.   I wouldn't want him at all.  I still am not a Tomlin fan.  At least as a head coach.

@Zetaspeak   It is sad.  Speaking of fantasy league, after more than a year of not participating anymore because it seemed like too much work, not fun, etc, I planned on drafting Luck if available.  Even before Mahomes.  Maybe his retirement is an omen and I should back out of my league.   ;D

I think the guy that ripped him was Doug Gottlieb.  My feeling is that if you lose the love for what you do and it's changing your for the worse as a person, then just walk away on your own terms.  Other athletes have done it.  This was a shock though.  Poor guy never played behind a good offensive line.  The Colts finally got one last year and he won't see what could happen with that and an improved defense.

Glad to see the Raid-uhs are still the Raid-uhs.

In the aftermath of the very predictable Antonio Brown mess, one local sports columnist had this to say:  ''In the last 372 days, Gruden has traded away a generational talent in Khalil Mack and a stud wide receiver in Amari Cooper, a second-round pick, two third-round picks, and a fifth-round pick. In return, he has only rookies Josh Jacobs and Johnathan Abrams and one first-round pick. That’s horrific general managing.''

The good news is they still have 8 seasons to go after this one on Jon Gruden's 10 year $100 million contract.  You know what they say in Raiderland, ''Just Win, Baby''.

That last game tonight was ugly. Poor Steelers. What a way to start your season. The Patriots look absolutely unstoppable. Collinsworth made an insightful remark. Did Antonio Brown watch this game and wonder "why do they even need me?"  Nah. Considering NFL egos I doubt it

@TigerLily  That game was painful for me to watch.  I really thought the Steelers would finally win at New England.  The Patriots just picked them apart as usual.  *sigh*  :-\

@juan  Do you think he'll be the #1 overall pick in the draft?  I think that Hebert kid from Oregon has a shot.  Before the first game was played yesterday my belief was the Dolphins will be the worst team in the league.  They'll have that pick.

@ShayP I’d take Georgia’s Andrew Thomas and fix left tackle for a decade. Stopping the pass rush will make a lot of quarterbacks better.

Don't be discouraged, Shay.  It's hard to judge how well a certain team will do just by watching the first game.  Anything can change.  I recall a Patriots game a couple seasons ago, where they started off with an early score, and they were all nodding to each other as if it was business as usual, and then they proceeded to get their asses beat.  This is where the Steelers have it over the Patriots.  If a game is close, and down to the final minutes, I would bet on Big Ben to come out the victor everytime.  They just have to tighten things up, make some adjustments.  They'll be back.  You just watch.

2 things:

1)  I hope the Chargers go 0 for the next 15.  On a related note, I hope Melvin Gordon gets traded to a good team.

2)  I am suspicious of the Patriots and this Antonio Brown thing.  The Patriots are known cheaters in many different ways. I hope somebody slipped up along the way and that the league catches them. Brown was a whiny little bitch in Pittsburgh and Oakland, if he suddenly becomes an altar boy in New England, may his ACL be ripped to shreds and his contract void 👿👿👿

Rant over, soapbox surrendered, I still hate the NFL and revel in its empty seats problem.

I have to give some good credit for that new MNF commentator Booger McFarland who quickly pointed out that the Texans defense was defending the long (TD) pass when in reality the Saints only needed about 10 or so yards to get a FG.

I normally don't cheer the Raiders but I made an exception this week because of the Brown situation plus my fantasy opponent had the Broncos (Broncos crapping the bed gave me the WIN for the week)

Glad to see GB win in Chicago but the Jets are the Jets and giving up 17 straight points and 14 in the 4th quarter is such a Jets thing to do. Did the Browns just come down to reality? Are the Ravens that good or the Dolphins that bad?

Yep. Booger is an excellent commentator. I'm glad they let him come in from the cold and Witten goes back on the field where he belongs. So great the Raiders won after what they have gone through. Congrats on your win, Z. Yes. I thought I would root for the Bears but I have been loving Green Bay long time and really glad they did so well. Bless Aaron Rodgers. I bet the Browns would do better if they changed their team name. That's just a shitty name to be stuck with. The Ravens might be good. But the Dolphins definitely stink. I think Dallas is going to have a great season too. My Rams looked a bit rocky but still scored 30 points. And a win is a win

Hooray football season!

... new MNF commentator Booger McFarland...

Several years ago I was driving at night and there wasn't a thing on the radio, so I ended up listening to a San Jose St game on, I think, ESPN network.

I remember some lady was on the announcing team, and her voice was just godawful.  Really grating and obnoxious.  I don't really watch sports anymore, and hadn't seen a MNF game in quite some time, but one night a year or two ago I was flipping around the channels and began watching one.

Holt shit, that voice.  That lady was doing the Monday Night game.  Hell, I remember when MNF was an EVENT - they usually had the best game every week, and had some pretty good announcers.  But now...

I turned it off that night.  I think her name turned out to be Doris something.  Terrible.

When Sunday Night Football debut in 2006 and MNF went from ABC to ESPN at the same time is when MNF quality went down as SNF has become the main show. Even Thursday game seem to have better quality now that Fox has picked up most of the games. Monday got a lot of "left over" games, case in point this coming weekend has Browns vs Jets, which sound horrible (and I like the Jets)

Speaking of Thursday, who would have guessed Caroline Panthers being 0-2 and losing both their home games. Crazy how they might be already out of it being in a tough division with Saints and Falcons, losing those early home games and to who people consider the weak link in the division in the Bucks.

I love it.  It wasn't all that long ago when their ass-wipe QB was insufferably displaying his lack of class during games, and telling other teams if they didn't like it they should stop him.   I wonder how that's working out for him now.

Last thing I remember hearing from him was the post-Super Bowl Q&A.  Still a favorite sports photo.

... I bet the Browns would do better if they changed their team name. That's just a shitty name to be stuck with...

Welll... The Browns were named after their co-founder and first head coach, Paul Brown, a hall of famer and one of the most influential coaches in league history.  From their inception in the 1940s up to the Super Bowl era, they were one of the most dominant teams in the league, with a ton of great players - starting with Jim Brown and Otto Graham.  Many - if not most - of the great coaches over the years can trace their coaching linage back to Paul Brown.

There is a lot of history associated with that name, certainly for the Cleveland fans.  So much so that when punk-ass owner at the time Art Modell moved the team to Baltimore in the mid-1990s (and changed the name to Ravens), the fans insisted on retaining the name and colors for a hoped for expansion team, which they received a few years after the original team left.  I think they actually sued to keep the name, colors, etc, and claim the old Brown's history as part of the current team.  They aren't going to change it.

Oh oh. Someone needs a CTE brain scan STAT!

In a Sunday morning Twitter rant that touched on multiple topics, Antonio Brown said he will no longer be playing in the NFL after his Friday release by the Patriots, the latest chapter in a months-long saga that featured bizarre behavior, a release by the Raiders, an 11-day stint with the Patriots, and multiple sexual assault allegations.

Double Oh Oh. 🙀  Highly unlikely Ol' Krafty would let him come back after this

Typical Chargers. 😾  Comfortably in charge until well into the last quarter. Then lose it in the last 11 seconds. This is why I stopped rooting for them years ago. But I did discover the incredible hunkiness of Sean Culkin 😻

With Mahomes out for who knows how long, the inevitable cry goes out that Colon Kap would be the 'perfect' replacement.  I just read one piece claiming that KC and Andy Reid run the West Coast Offense, and that CK ran that very thing in SF.

No he didn't.  Jim Harbaugh installed the Spread Option for CK to run in SF - because that's the only thing he can run.  In college at Nevada he mastered The Pistol, a Triple Option Spread with the QB standing behind the line not quite as far back as a Shotgun Formation.  He would then run left or right, hand it off, pass it, or keep it.

Worked brilliantly.  In college.  Problem is, it gets people hurt running it against an NFL level defense.

Anyway, shouldn't we just give up on CK coming back?  Not only isn't he suited for this level for any length of time, LeBron says people should be fired for saying (or doing) anything that disrupts profits in sports, so what's the problem?

The Niners are simply brilliant. Too bad they had to show that brilliance beating up on my Rams. But I'm happy they are still undefeated. Especially since Jimmy Loup-Garou is another Cute Guy Bowl alumnus. Well deserved I might add

I have no idea how the Niners turned it around so fast, they were just 4-12 last season. The NFL West is a beast of a division.

I've wondered sometimes why certain violent, vicious, intentional acts on the playing field aren't considered crimes - with the player arrested and prosecuted.  There are plenty of police on the field and around the stadium at every game.

That is actually coming up in a couple of articles I read this morning.  One reporter asked the Cleveland police about it, and their response was 'no comment', other than the QB Rudolph hasn't filed charges.

So two questions:  1) since when do the police need a formal complaint before arresting a suspect, when the crime is committed right in front of them, and 2) will Rudolph file charges?

(My expectation is Rudolph will either blow it off as 'in the past and we're focusing on our next game' or 'the league is handling it', and won't want to have the rep around the league as the one that did so.  Same with his agent - he'd still get the blame.  The team should file charges, or publicly insist that he does if it needs to be him)

Before that, during the game TWO Steeler's receivers were knocked out of the game with concussions.  Two.  I'm not sure how that happens, since hitting an opponent in the head is also illegal in the NFL.  And usually another crime as well.

This all goes back to coaching.  This POS Browns coach should be investigated by the NFL, and fired.  And arrested.  He won't be though, look how long Pete Carroll has been a head coach in college and the NFL - coaching his players to do much the same.

I've never even heard of this Browns coach, it struck me as odd the first thing I heard him say in his post game interview was he didn't coach this stuff.  Kind of a strange thing to say right off the bat, unless he actually does coach this stuff.

@PB I saw that Rudolph's legal team is "looking into it" but I don't think anything can be done.  The NFL governs itself and the rule book is full of violations.  Using a helmet in the way it was used Thursday is one of them.  So, when you're in that league there is an understanding that there will be penalties dished out by the league for this behavior, and not law enforcement.

Some other sports can bring the legal process into it.  I recall a few players in the NHL having criminal chargers filed against them while on the ice.  The happened in Canada though and I think it's part of their law system that sports teams aren't exempt.  What comes to mind is when Marty McSorley hit Donald Brashear in the head with his stick.  He was charged and received probation (18 months I think) in addition to what the league doled out.

@PB  Freddie Kitchens is an idiot and his team has no discipline.  The Browns are so cocky this year and haven't earned that right.  They have the most player ejections, most penalties accepted, and the most penalty yards.

The hits (3 at once) on JuJu were obviously bad but it seemed the hits to the head were accidental, and him falling on his head made things worse.  I put that on Mason Rudolph for setting him up for failure by throwing into triple coverage.  The hit on Diontae Johnson was vicious and deliberate.  When I saw the blood coming from his ear I was thinking the worst.

The league has more rules about this than ever yet these players just continue to do what they want.  There needs to be more extreme penalties...like the one Garrett just got.  Suspended indefinitely with no pay.

Now that you mention it, I do remember something about criminal charges in the NHL!  Good for them.

I don't think the NFL, or any league, can exempt itself from the law.  I'm no expert, but I think anything on that field is still subject to Cleveland, Ohio, and federal law - for example what if that helmet blow had hit Rudolph in the temple and killed him?  Heck, they arrest fans inside the stadium all the time.

We know the League isn't serious, and cares only about money.  That's just a fact.

We've seen that players can be any sort of criminal and play.  Unless it impacts revenue.  For example the two big 'crimes' the NFL (and other leagues) are actually serious about are performance enhancement and domestic abuse.  Performance enhancement, because it brings up questions about the integrity of the games themselves, and domestic abuse because they believe that to be a hot button issue with female fans, who they want to continue cultivating.

Thug and accused of accessory-to-murder Ray Lewis continues to be in good standing around the league, even recently elected to the HoF.  Criminals from college programs are routinely drafted.  People like Aaron Hernandez continue to play until they are hauled off and locked up.  And etc.

Something else I've wondered about - are these teams liable for bringing a known criminal into the area to play for them, and he then commits some heinous crime there?  I think the victim would have a case.

I received a head wound from watching the game.  I had forgotten my pledge not to pick a team to win where the quarterback's face resembles a deer looking into headlights.  I slapped my forehead in disgust.  So I stopped watching for awhile and then tuned back in during the last two minutes of the game.  Looking at the score, I turned the tv off in disgust, thereby missing the game's dramatic ending.  "Slap!" There went another one.

At first look it looked like some big dude went crazy on the little dude and I was ready to throw the book at the Browns player. But something didn't seem right to me, why would a guy on the winning team get so angry.

I took a closer look at the video (zapruder style) and the Steelers QB Rudolph tried to remove the Browns player (Garrett) helmet off first and then when Myles was getting up Rudolph kicked him in the groin which triggered Garrett. Saying that Garrett should get punished as you just to swing a helmet at somebodies dome. But Rudolph was a bit of a bitch here with going after the the helmet first, kicking him in the balls, and after the Steelers big dudes were controlling the situation a helmet-less Rudolph came in looking to swing.

Yep, absolutely.  Rudolph should be fined, probably will be.

Miles was the instigator though, holding the QB long after the ball was gone, slamming him to the ground, keeping him on the ground - yeah Rudolph got frustrated and retaliated.  If Garrett couldn't handle the QB responding to his excessive behavior, perhaps he should have let up after the ball was gone.

@TigerLily,

The SDUT had an interesting story in the sports section. If the Seahawks go on to win the super bowl, a San Diego State Aztec player will be a part of the team, a big part. Just like the World Series champions an NBA champions both had San Diego State Aztecs as key players.

With the chargers sucking as they do, two poor teams in Los Angeles ain't helping nobody...

I just wish the Raiders were doing better, I like their business move of leaving California. Each one of those players will be making more money because now eight of their games will be outside of one of the worst taxed states for athletes.

Anyway, I have become much more of a high school and college football fan now. The NFL has alienated me heavily.

The Packers laid such an egg on Sunday Night, every time I think they are legit Top 2 team in their conference (top 4 in the league) they have that they don't just lose but look awful, especially coming out of a bye week,

Were the Eagles out of timeouts?  If not they needed to call one seeing Miami line up like that.

Also, seeing where the K lined up (not somewhere out of danger), shouldn't someone have kept an eye on him?

Also, what are the rules here, doesn't the offense have to have 5 down linemen?  Other than the C I didn't see even one down and set

I didn’t watch the game. Just saw the highlights.

There doesn’t have to be any down lineman but you do need 5 people on the line wearing numbers between 50-79.

I was shocked that they would waste a play like this during a rather dismal season.  I guess when you are 2 and 9 you don’t have anything to lose, so they decided to play the spoiler?

The Jaguars played the Raiders yesterday in the last game for the Black Hole. After the game,  Jaguars players were commenting on the heavy marijuana smoke at midfield.

In all the Raider/Oakland/Coliseum/etc nostalgia, no one seems to mention little kids being beaten up in the bathroom for wearing the wrong team's t-shirt, etc.

F the Raiders and their fans, good riddance.  The real shame is the criminals aren't moving to Las Vegas with them

I get to see Raider fan pukes lose their team not once but twice.  Who says there's never any good news.

My favorite Raiders memories?  The firing of Lane Kiffin.  The $50 million for Jawalrus Russell.  The annual win/loss records since they returned from LA.  Ex-coach Chucky beating them in the Super Bowl - since he'd coached all their players and designed all their plays, he knew what was coming and how to defend it.

Derek Carr having that great year (2016), then going out on Christmas Eve, ruining their postseason.  The personal seat license scam rip-off.  Re-hiring Chucky and giving him $100 million.  Helping drive the Warriors and A's out of town with all their demands, then leaving themselves when their work was done.  The death of Al Davis (just because I thought the foolishness would finally end.  It didn't)

Hell, maybe I will miss 'em.

Maybe.  If the Saints play SF or GB, or both, it would be on the road.

Drew Brees' playoff record with the Saints is 7-1 at home, 1-5 on the road

Odds are against Brees then.  I'll stand by my pick though.  I think GB is highly overrated regardless of record.  SF hasn't been as dynamic as they were earlier.  Their defense has shown signs of fatigue as the weeks went by.  However, I'd pick them over GB to make it.

We shall see.  ;) :D

Oh for sure, beyond all the stats and analysis, they still need to play the games to find out

Watching the '9ers in the Montana/Young era it seemed like their best years injuries were minimal, I'm not sure which is more surprising - their record this year, or that they did it with so many injuries to key players.

Derrick Henry is an amazing person. He’s from this area, so I began watching him when he was in the 8th grade. He carried the ball constantly in high school and just ran over the other kids. He got a bit of a break at Alabama where he paired with other backs, and now he’s a major offensive weapon with the Titans. He had 303 carries In the regular season - the most in the league - and 34 more last night. I wonder how many he has left.

After Jaydevon Clown took out the Eagles QB, there should have been a pass play to the Seattle sideline, with good ol' Pete somehow taking a helmet to the gut.  Unintentionally, of course.

Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, two of my favorite quarterbacks.  (Big Ben too but he's out of the picture, of course.)  If the Packers can protect Aaron, then they will probably win the game.  If the Seahawks sack him a number of times though, then he will get rattled and won't be worth much.  Russell on the other hand, doesn't seem to mind the occasional sack and he tends to get better as the game progresses.  Should be an interesting game.  I like both teams, so I won't be disappointed by whoever wins.

PS, A big congratulations to @ShayP for finishing a solid third place in the Dean and King regular season football pool! Great job, Shay.

Watching the Viking game now (and spinning thru the commercials).  SF is going to have their hands full - good thing most of their injured players are scheduled to be back.

I like Russell Wilson too.  And Marshawn Lynch (watched him here at Cal, back when I went to games, before they ruined their stadium).  But I hope they lose every game as long as Pete Carroll is there.  Can't stand Pete Carroll.  I saw him plenty when Cal and Stanford would play his USC teams - always seemed to be a lot of targeting, late hits, constant PI -  nothing much has changed since he came to Seattle - I wish he'd dry up and blow away.  Oh, he likes to run the score up too, it was just great the time Harbaugh and Stanford returned that favor.

Going into the playoffs, for the NFC it looked to me like Phil, Sea, GB & MN had gaping holes, with SF and NO the better teams.  I'm looking for SF to go to the SB, but of course as always a lot depends on game plan, injuries, turnovers, field position luck...  We'll see

I have a quite elaborate ranking process of who I like and dislike

I prefer original teams to expansion teams
I tend to hate any team that's moved in my lifetime (that means away from their fans, not just out to the suburbs)
I tend to dislike any team in NY, Florida, Texas, or LA
I prefer NFC to AFC

Let's see, I pull against teams who currently or recently have a coach or player I hate
I like teams that play the style of football I prefer (grinders not showboats, aggressive play calling, keeping cheat shots to a minimum, a certain amount of gamesmanship, scheming and play calling that best fits the players they have, lock down defenses, smart personnel moves, and so on

This works well on a game by game basis, I've never really ranked all the teams using it.  A full league ranking using that system would probably change almost weekly, depending on the last three.

Always on the bottom though would be the Cowboys, next level are Giants, Jets, Raiders, and Rams - unless they're terrible, then who cares.  I hate the Seahawks currently, because of Pete Carroll.

Always on top:  49ers.  I like the Patriots currently because they're smart and play the game right.  I like Green Bay - the only team owned by the fans

All the above can fluctuate based on W-L records.  I like watching good teams execute - the teamwork of it, and am a proud fair weather fan

LOL

Yes, agreed. Pretty amazing how much they traded to move up one spot. They literally in hindsight could have traded down to acquire extra picks and still picked one of the better QBs. I really don't know what Pace saw in Trubisky that apparently no one else did.

VERY HAPPY to see Seattle Seahawks out of the playoffs.  Listening to sports talk shows all week, the fans here seemed to want them again, as though SF still needs to prove themselves against them.

[Bleep] that, Green Bay had the better record and is thus the better team - if they happen to win, it won't be because of cheap shots, late hits, and unflagged PI.

I thought Baltimore was the most entertaining team this season, I have to say I was rooting for them on the AFC side. Sad to see them go.

So happy to see my Pack in the conference final. But the 49ers smoked them in the regular season, so Packers playing away from home is concerning. But who knew a head coach can make such a difference. I hated Mike McCarthy and thought he always made his team underachieve, so many wasted prime Rogers years in staying with McCarthy,  :-\ Nice to see Jimmy Graham have a big game as this season he really looked like he didn't have it anymore, good for him with one big hurrah during playoff time

I don't think Nevada has a state income tax, which would be very appealing to players, especially free agents.

With their poor personnel and head coach decisions, I envision them loading up with huge contracts for over-the-hill players.  First up, Tom Brady?

Being in a state without income tax certainly has its benefits but some, if not all, states that have a state tax collect that for games played in their state.  California started that back in 1991.  Cities like Philadelphia even charge their city tax.

There are a bunch of free agent QBs this year. Brady, Brees, Tannehill, Winston. Marriota, Rivers and I am probably forgetting a couple.  You know that the Bengals are going to for that kid from LSU but there is a lot of talent on the market this year.

Maybe the Bears could get a QB.

I've given up hope of the Lions moving away.  I think the only solution is to just put the franchise down. Disband it, tear down Ford Field, salt the Earth and pretend the whole thing never happened.

An absolute ton.  Add Bridgewater, Dalton, Eli, Cam, I think Flacco and Foles, probably more.  It's going to be fun

Cincinnati has the #1 pick in the draft, and are apparently set on LSU's QB.

Other teams, such as Miami (who own three 1st round picks, incl #5) also want him badly.  Given the uncertainty of any college player coming into the league, future health issues, etc, I think the Bungles should trade the pick *IF* they are offered a Hershel Walker type heist.  Especially given the number of available QB free agents noted above.

They need so much, what good is one college QB going to do them over the next, say, three years?

Then again, last year I thought the 49ers should trade the #2 pick instead of drafting Bosa.

Wrong, but I don't think anyone other than Shanahan and Lynch knew how close they already were

Being in a state without income tax certainly has its benefits but some, if not all, states that have a state tax collect that for games played in their state.  California started that back in 1991.  Cities like Philadelphia even charge their city tax.

I have a question about that.

When teams play in the Meadowlands in NJ, they pay tax to NJ, but NY isn't getting any of that, are they??

No.

But if a player is a resident of New York state he would be taxed on all his income worldwide, with a credit for taxes paid to other states an countries.

Get your bets in, Shanahan 100-1 odds to blow a 28-3 lead.

I still haven't figured out why it's the Offensive Coordinator's fault.  What about the Defensive Coordinator, it was his squad that did that.  Hell, what about the Head Coach, he's ultimately responsible for play calling.  Seems like more Fake News.

Report: CBS will make aggressive offer to try to keep Tony Romo
"Much has been made of ESPN’s impending efforts to convince Tony Romo to join the network, but it does not sound like CBS will be letting him go without a fight. "

Romo should be cause for a bidding war. Overnight he became the best color commentator for the NFL. I always felt he was a bit over hyped as a quarterback. But he has found his niche. This season I could tell all the other color guys are being told, "Be more like Romo"

I think the line is KC -1.5.  I'm taking SF outright.  I think they win.  I think they run the ball down their throats and Garappolo has a very efficient game.  I also think Mahomes feels a great deal of pressure.

Guinness is amazing from the keg.  All beers are much better, actually.  That's why they sell a lot of beers in 22 oz bottles, the larger the container it comes in, the better the beer tastes.  If it was warm, it well likely was on cask.  Any bar I go with decent beers, I ask what's on cask, and get that (they usually don't know what I'm talking about, so it answers the question)

I remember my first Guinness (sitting at a bar, waiting for some female), watching it foam up, thinking there was something wrong with it.  Until I tasted it.  It may not be the best beer (if not, it's damn close, it's easily the best foreign beer), but it's the one I judge all porters and stout by

And yes, beer is food.  Not that Bud, Coors, Miller, etc, crap - that's not

I've heard that so many times from people who drink that yellow rice beer.  There are so many flavors, so may different hops and hop blends, so many methods, flavors, levels of intensity.  After I ask a few questions, I can probably pick one out they like.  100% so far.

I'd probably start you out with a Trumer Pils, or the equivalent in your area

What worries me about the 49ers is that player Raheem Mostert, who pretty much won their last game singlehandedly.  Obviously, the Chiefs will try to contain his running game.  If they succeed, then they will have a good chance of winning the game.  If Mostert runs free, and can't be stopped, then the 49ers will probably win the Super Bowl.  The trouble is, I've seen lots of running backs enter a SB game as heavy favorites to score, only to be shut down at the starting gate, so to speak.  It is for this reason that I'm going to pick the Chiefs to win.

With the 49ers it's the system.  The RBs are plug and play (after having the right guys on the team in the first place), and Shanahan goes with the hot hand

I don't know much about KC, but the 49ers are the local team.  Here are a few things to watch for on offense.

Shanahan runs more plays with players in motion than any other team.  Obviously to confuse the offense, and keep them off balance.

The FB, TEs, and WRs have all bought into them blocking with enthusiasm on running plays.  A lot of teams don't even have a FB, and much of the time their running plays are on the opposite side of where the TE lines up.  Look for beautiful blocking schemes on runs to the outside and downfield.

As an OC Shanahan used to sit in on meetings with the defense.  He has a better idea than most offensive coaches of what each defensive player's assignment is for any given formation.  He uses this information to confuse the defense, set up mismatches, and catch them out of position.

Shanahan has an ''inquisitive offense'' - he likes to set up and run plays to see how the defense reacts, then use the same formations later and run something completely different.  All teams do this to some extent, Shanahan is the master of it.

Shanahan has a deep playbook.  Dispatching the Vikings and Packers he used very little of it.  Watch for reverses and all sorts of slick plays if he needs them.

That is a very nice rundown of what to look for during the game, PB.  Even if SF's running game were to be shut down, Garoppolo can still be a top of the line passer.

Jimmy G was going to be a free agent, and the Pats were going to lose him.  Apparently Belichek wanted to get something for him, send him to a nice situation, and out of the AFC.  He called SF out of the blue and offered him for a 2nd round pick.  After they picked their jaws up off the floor, they immediately agreed.

Final prediction, 49ers win comfortably.  Meaning by more than one score (8 points) but less than a blowout (17).

KC hasn't seen a defense like this, rough day for their QB.  On defense, go ahead and load the box - see how that works out

Well, I was kinda on track with my analysis and prediction.  :-\  After the 3rd quarter ended I thought I could be there.  Thankfully I didn't put money on it.  Nonetheless it's the first Super Bowl that had a team or teams that I didn't hate so I'm fine with the winner.  Their were no "villains" in this game.  However I was sick of the Mahomes talk 24/7 all year, but that's the way it goes.

Lamar Jackson had a great year as well, and is in the same category of rising star.  A lot of speculation all year that the Ravens would be in the Super Bowl.  He's been forgotten about a little after his team dropped out of the playoffs, but he'll be back.

He's fortunate they vote on the MVP before the playoffs start

MVP voting

I don't think there's ever been this many young, elusive, incredibly athletic, threat-to-run QBs as there are currently in the NFL.  They are in good situations and had great seasons - #1, 2, 3, and 6

1. Lamar Jackson, QB, Baltimore Ravens (90 points, 9 first-place votes)
2. Russell Wilson, QB, Seattle Seahawks (76 points)
3. Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs (56 points)
4. Michael Thomas, WR, New Orleans Saints (55 points)
5. Carson Wentz, QB, Philadelphia Eagles (35 points)
6. Deshaun Watson, QB, Houston Texans (34 points)
7. Dak Prescott, QB, Dallas Cowboys (23 points)
8. Derrick Henry, RB, Tennessee Titans (22 points)

Shakira and J-Lo are the half-time performers?
It took 'em 54 Super Bowls to finally have strippers?

HOLD ON CHIEFS!!!  1 25 to go...…….  TD at 1:12 to goooo  Yaaaaay
Horrible halftime show.  Wasn't there supposed to be music?
me thinks the kChiefs are going to Disneyland!  :-*
EDIT  Done deal.

I hate pop singers who yodel. Especiially Latin pop yodelers.
I have to say I’m impressed at JLo at 50 being able to do that on the pole.

I am Happy to report that during the half-time, I was occupied, doing something, and I saw none of it.

You were fortunate.

I recorded the game, and started watching about 2 hours after it started.  I just don't want to sit thru commercials, ''analysis'', interviews, halftime, etc.  It's great to just fast forward thru it
I stopped and watched enough of both of them to get a sense of the awfulness of it.  When did this become what music is?

lol. Grumpy Old Poops Awards. And PB pulls ahead with two posts. Juan almost got a pass for the J. Lo on a pole comment. Almost

I didn't care for the show because of the sexual objectification of women.  ;D  I kid.  Look...all jokes aside, I appreciated that wiggle, and I wouldn't mind spending a weekend with Shakira because I adore hips that tell the truth.  However, the show was crap...IMO.  I do recall it being bandied about that this would represent the "empowerment" of women.  Yeah. Sure.  ;)

in all fairness, I don't care for half-time shows anyway.  So, I will accept my Grumpy Old Poops award.  :D

Confused indeed.  Me too.  Funny how all this works isn't it?  It's Show Biz though.  Always has been.  Plenty of flesh showing over the years but now it's subjective and politicized.  If I like it I'm damned, and if I don't I'm damned.  It's the way of the world now I guess.  :-\

J-Lo is 50 and did the pole. Wasn’t Madonna about 50 when she almost fell a couple of times during her Super Bowl show?  OK, I looked, she was 53.
For that matter, Shakira is nearly 45. I’m impressed by how in shape they are. It makes me want to get up and lift rather than sit here posting on ellgab.

About J-lo and Shakira, they aren't on the level of Prince, The Who, McCartney, etc - very few are - but at least they agreed to do the show.

The NFL had a problem this year trying to get a top level performer, because everyone was either oh so Woke in support of Kapernik, or afraid to show they weren't.  At least these two had courage.

Of course the person that started all this, JZ, is very Woke, but not quite Woke enough to stay home - that would have been a personal inconvenience.  So it's a bit of a high wire act

What the Super Bowl should consider is to drop all this and simply have a college marching band perform.  It's one of the draws that sets college football apart, and something fans enjoy.  Less of a headache and probably a lot cheaper

Tons cheaper. The trouble with the way it is now, they need a huge spectacle that can fill up a football field and widescreen tv's. So they need these acts that are about showbiz. Not necessarily musicality. Though Shakira has an awesome voice.

What was that graphic they showed? Commercial time is $5.6 million for 60 seconds? So the sponsors can definitely afford it. The Super Bowl, and the NFL for that matter, are all about the entertainment value. And the $$$$. And I for one am thoroughly entertained 😺

They just looked so sloppy. The entire thing is glitz and glamour.  Get back to a band situation with real MUSIC and talent on display.  And can we talk about the asses on those two hussies? The things they were wearing did ALL the work for them. Their glutes had zero definition just a sort of round mass. Not Ass! And even if their asses were fiiine I still don't want impressionable little girls and future fruits to be seeing (and hearing) that garbage.

Anyone else enjoying these throwback Sunday NFL Games like I am? Every one of them has been spectacular and such a treat to see these games when normally there wouldn't be any football at all this time of the year. About now I would be tapping my foot, checking my watch and rolling my eyes in exasperation waiting for September

Today's was the 2001 Super Bowl. Rams vs. Patriots. Before Tommy was a GOAT and just a kid (see what I did there? 😺).  Won in THE LAST TWO SECONDS! I assume i  watched it live but don't remember for sure. All the games have been nailbiter surprises for me. I like it

The NFL should get back to their regular schedule asap, OTAs this time of year, regular workouts, etc - too many of these idiots are bored and have decided the best use of their time is to go on a crime spree.

Unfortunately, everyone knows who these fools are, and they are soon arrested..

There really are too many teams in the NFL at this point. The way the game is played now, you really need a hyper talented QB and those guys don't grow on trees.  Anyone excited about a Mitch Trubisky or a Tyrod Taylor at the helm?  Ugh. The franchise located at Washington D.C. should be contracted for extreme, extended racism - moving to a cartoon dog or whatever will not address that injustice.  To balance things a bit, the franchise located in Detroit, Michigan should also be contracted.  Just out of plain mercy.  See how that goes and maybe fold two franchises a year until three divisions of 4 teams each in both conferences is reached.

I had no idea the NFL was starting up this week.  I knew they were practicing and so on, but never really thought much about it.

Are they going to take their cue from the NBA, and take the sport over the cliff?  Probably, given the reverence they're now showing to St. Colon.  If any of that is a major theme this year, bye-bye ratings.

I happened to catch about five minutes of the game.  The cameras wouldn't film anything above the players on the sidelines and I began to feel kind of claustrophobic. I kept waiting for a long pass or kick just to see the stands, empty or not, but nothing doing.  So I stopped watching.

I'm guessing they will. They played a "black national anthem", did the kneeling thing, locked arms, and players are allowed to put the names of black victims of police brutality, shootings, etc, on their helmets.

I was looking forward to watching the Steelers opener on Monday but all this crap has ruined the mood.

It appears Jacksonville will be the only NFL team allowing fans in this week.  I actually support playing the black national anthem there because the composers were from Jacksonville.  There’s a movement for the Jaguars to play all Jacksonville music as they once did - Skynyrd, 38 Special, Allman Brothers, Classics IV, etc.  Probably not Limp Bizkit, though.

I've seen many articles and videos of athletes and sportswriters claiming to be ''mystified'' about fans booing the ''unity'' and ''social justice'' messages.

Ok, most of us don't believe this is a systemically racist society - well except for education, budget priorities, lack of opportunity, etc, in our major, left-wing run cities.  People with solutions don't have any say in how any of them are run.

We don't believe ''black people are being hunted when they leave their houses'' as LerBon James claims, or that police are targeting them.  We know fake news is amplifying a handful of incidents that may or may not be justified in order to create a narrative, while willfully ignoring white criminals shot by the cops.

And we sure don't need lectures from 25 year-old sheltered know-nothings.  Boooooo.

I've decided to stretch my NFL boycott to it's 5th year. A quick look at the box scores validate the soundness of this decision.  The Lions were carved up by Mitch Trubisky of all QB's today - leading to a 4th quarter collapse.  At one time that might have kicked up some stomach acid but now?

Now you see why the Bears traded away a handful of future draft picks to move up two spots so they could pick Trubisky before anyone else could snatch him.  While KC and Houston else were hoping Patrick Mahones and Deshaun Watson would still be available.

I was happy to see that Cam Newton and Aaron Rodgers both had good games in week 1.  It will be interesting to see how they do if both of them remain healthy.  My inner demon always hopes that Heisman trophy winners will get smeared in their opening games, but I'm pleased to note that the quarterback for the Bengals did pretty good.  He lost the game yes, but he did perform well, all in all.  My demon has retreated back into the subconsciousness for another year.

I liked what I saw in the Steelers.  Fast, aggressive defense.  Forced 5 turnovers.  Big Ben shook off the rust pretty quickly.  I like Benny Snell as the RB.  He had a great game.  He was in because James Connor got hurt AGAIN.  WR's look like a solid unit.

Were there any microaggressions or systematic racism on the field?

Of course, but they were offset by virtue signaling and wokeness

Even the empty seats took a knee.

The part where Mahomes snaps his head to look in a different section of the stadium, completely baffled that the fans are booing (at :08 seconds into the video).

The team no doubt talked about what they'd do for weeks leading up to the game, and not one person suggested the fans might not like it.

I joined a football pool (I won Week 1 YAY) and I was stunned how low-rated Rodgers was. I couldn't believe it, he was at the bottom half of QB's on the pre-rating charts. I mean the Packers DID win their division with a 13-3 record last year.

I am so glad football is back, it really is the perfect sport. I also got Red Zone which is a real beautiful thing

Steelers were dominating the Broncos but as they often do, they ease up in the second half and allowed them to climb back.  The Broncos had every chance to win the game late but the Steelers' safety Terrell Edmunds blitzed UNTOUCHED and sacked the QB on 4th and 2 at the Steelers 15.  Steelers win 26-21.  (They were up 17-3 at the half and Denver was showing no signs of life)

Next week is the Houston Texans and a reunion of the Watt brothers.

The Jaguars lost on a last minute field goal.  They can’t even Tank for Trevor very well.

Seahawks 35 - Patriots 30.  What a great game.  A real nail-biter right up till the very end.
