Looks like it is our turn here in the Carolina's for a thrashing. Can't imaging it will be anything like what Houston or Puerto Rico
went through but it will definitely suck. Smithfield has already announced the big Hog Plant will be closing over in Tar Heel, NC so
this is serious business!
I'll post any interesting updates and if anyone else is here in the Carolina's please do the same.

Folks I know on Hilton Head not leaving. Friends in S.C. near Beauford maybe left? Not sure, call unanswered. If not leaving regions I would stock up, esp.as hog farms etc flood out. The rain levels expected high. Harvey stalled, came back out, n back in dumping water like crazy. Then res releases to protect areas if dams failed n water nowhere to go (pressure etc) so bad. It wasnt the wind but the water volume. Thats Houston. Further down coast it was more the 'storm' that did damage. Rockport etc. Hope it aint bad for you and area. Have water, shut off gas and elec, move stuff upstairs, have masks, Tyvex suits, etc if you stay. Canned goods, flashlights, guns, wetwipes, WATER, handcleaner, bleach, supply of whatever meds needed, gloves. If you use generator, propane grill, camp stoves be aware of CO. Dont run inside. Dont connect to house unless you have prepared circuit (can shock linemen repairing things.) Know your neighbors, organize contingency plans, look out for elderly etc, let neighbors or LEO know you are staying on in house, esp if most left or during rehab, lest someone think you are looter, etc. Good luck...

Stay safe, my friend. ;)

All good advice. I'll post what I'm up to so you Pro's can critique my Prep work. My biggest fear is the Nuke plant down the road. It seems as if they are always doing stupid shit over there - we'll see how Homer J. Simpson and the boys handle this one.
So far:
Gas: got one Vehicle set up with a full tank of Gas [was a bitch to find but got 'er done]
Food: Plenty of canned goods, boxed dry food and our 30 days of storable food kit. In great shape.
Water: The city assures us that we'll have no water problems but I some stashed away and will fill the laundry sink, bath tub and I'll fill a rubbish can up out in the garage for toilet usage if need be.
Security: My Old Man always said "Son, if you put a man down with a .45 he stays down. Not always the case with a .38 or a .22 " Don't anticipate a problem but you never know
Hot Food: Got extra propane for the grill. In good shape there.
Right now working on Laundry - washing all the bedding etc and meticulously cleaning every inch of the house. If I don't have power for a week, don't want to be cleaning in 90 degree heat

Sounds all good. Idk the conditions there but if a low-lying area etc and you have time move stuff, secure water-proof containers photo albums etc.
Very important: know where and have water/proofed container easily 'grabbed' with whatever legal docs. Ids, passports, deed, various insurance docs, contact info of docs insurance agents ,etc. Also good to have bug-out bag in case you need to flee. Meds, med list, also. I would also take pics of stuff, ensure insurance coverage on all updated and current, etc.
Good luck. All of us thinking of y'all over there. Hope is not bad. The nuclear etc facilities are worrying...

Give a review by candlelight and HAM relay on the "just read thread" here. Had you told I could've sent you a set of the Durant's "History of Civilation" or Gibbon (somehow I keep getting sets from dead relatives or estate sales.) Hate to see Classics pulped and used book stores don't. TL/DR culture.
Kidding hope all goes well. My points were more about the potential flood n recovery aspects. The wind aspects have some different prep. Batten down windows, trim or take down suspect trees, have place in middle of house or basement to hunker down,

I reckon places already outta plywood etc for windows. Lacking that even tape can be better than nothing. Idk the reality but 'old timers' used to say open slightly some windows during hurricanes or bad storms. Supposedly pressure changes could effect houses even if not 'direct hit?' Idk if true. Stay safe...

Too bad Hoagland didn’t do a show last weekend. Now if the hurricane stalls offshore and reduces strength or spins off into the North Atlantic he can’t take credit for a mass consciousness experiment.

I hope you stay safe and sound. I was a bit worried initially since I'm in Richmond and there was talk we'd get a good bit of it, which we sometimes do. Gaston and Isabelle caused major problems. Rain and high winds are expected but I'm not too concerned. I do expect to lose power since that is quite common here even with a simple thunderstorm. Anyway, I do hope you have minimal issues during this storm. Take care man!

I’m back in the terrible cone of uncertainty.

While everyone is watching the named storms, I have been flooded in since about midnight Monday. Yesterday this was the national rain forecast. I am under that big blob in Texas. It could get real messy since our ground is already saturated.

I was house sitting over the weekend in a house that sits on stilts on a bayou. Yesterday there was about 4†of water under the house. Today it has receded about 10†but the road is still flooded. The road has a sump pump but the bayou is so high from tides and the runoff that it has nowhere to pump.
Probably going to have rain until Sunday.

Jeez. Four more days of rain sound ominous, especially with the road condition. How high does it have to be for you to be totally screwed? I'm not familiar with the territory and how quickly the water can recede under those conditions.

Well the one good thing about living by the water is that it doesn’t have far to go to drain off. There is a tropical system trying to form down by the Yucatan. Whether it becomes a storm or not, we will get high tides and rain. I am kind of screwed right now. If I can’t get my truck out today or tomorrow I will probably lose it by Saturday. I might chance it later this evening. Plus yesterday was when I was going to stock up on fresh food. Don’t have much here since I was house sitting. I told my son I may need him to bring me some food tonight.

I’m back in the terrible cone of uncertainty.
Yeah, this latest shift just put us back in Florence's cross hairs. Hilton Head and Beaufort were removed from the mandatory evacuation list yesterday with the hurricane watch beginning further up the coast at Edisto Beach. But the closer she gets the possibility for more changes in the track and intensity increases. And Florence seems to be taking an unorthodox track. If she stalls as they predict the big issue here will be flooding.
-
It looks like Florence is headed for Florence.
-
I'm not sure I'm buying the currently forecasted track that it makes after landfall. It's a very unusual track for storms that hit that part of the coast.
-
It looks like Florence is headed for Florence.
;D Gotta keep your sense of humor! Especially when our illustrious Gov. prematurely ordered the mandatory evacuation yesterday (he's up for reelection). And hurricane parties can be much fun! Stay safe.

That's kind of cool! I don't think I would want to own something like that but would be fun for a week or two. Well at least until you get trapped, run out of food and your vehicle gets trashed. Of course I'm picturing this:

Sweet! That's a great setup. Wouldn't mind something like that when it's retirement time. But up in Michigan along the Lake of course.
Good luck with your blob. Hope it breaks up or goes and haunts Alabama or something.

Not mine but a guy I sorta know had boat on wrecked house. After Harvey. Down in Rockport n had house like that n recently remodeled. There the storm was damage due to winds rain etc whereas Houston is was the floods n constant rain n 'dam' releases. All bad. Good luck!

Oh and @GravitySucks I think you did good in not painting that deck.
I can't imagine white paint/stain on a deck like that by the water would be fun to maintain. Although it looks bitchin'

I actually built all of the railings and the stairs once the bulkhead, boathouse and deck were built. They wanted to be able to have as much unobstructed view of the bayou and the vacant land on the other side of the bayou. I had to order the clear plastic tubes for the ballisters from a manufacturer in California and then cut them all to length. They like being able to look out from the living room to what looks like an unobstructed view. I think there are 415 ballisters. 830 holes for them to sit in. I burnt out one or two forstner bits drilling the holes into the treated lumber.

I like the design. I hate to take out trees, except cedar, n once built a deck around some nice Live n Spanish oaks. Ha. One forgets trees grow and in a wind storm shake a bit...no serious damage but had to repair railing around trees every so often. Good luck. Houston region doesn't need more rain or more floods!!!

Well in my first storm in NC that I experienced I learned a valuable lesson. They have these skinny-ass Virginia Slim looking things here that they call
pine trees and all kinds of different hard woods. I didn't think anything would bother some of these big strong Oaks but they blew over as the ground around them softened from all the rain. The skinny pines just kind of swayed like a hula skirt and came thru pretty much okay. Classic bend but don't break.

Uploaded good even on my old phone using bad lte. Yes it weird how the diff airlines handle. I'm sure there are bean-counters who figure. Also when places are HUBs I think some get priority. I wonder how much pilots etc have a say. One recalls during Harvey most was diverted or cancelled but some got it during a 'window' and also that crazy flight avoiding storms in West TX area that tracked all over the place dodging cells.

We’re seeing more false narratives from the media. While a category one hurricane, especially a slow moving one, is serious, it is not the same thing as a category four as the TV people are saying.

I saw one article that said Cat 1 storm, Cat 5 rains and Cat 4 storm surge.
Trying to use a windspeed scale to measure rain and tides is ridiculous.
TS Harvey dumped over 50†of rain on me last year as it sat over us for 5 days. What category was that?

Flooding always does more damage than winds. A hurricane is like a war. The winds are the first attack wave knocking out infrastructure. The second wave is the flooding waters that cause the most widespread damage and can linger long after the winds have subsided.

You do realize you are talking to the guy that has been flooded in since Monday night?
Fun fact: Even though I have lived on the gulf coast this time since 1982, until last summer (Harvey) I had experienced more rain days from hurricanes while working at the NASA center in WV than I had here.
Storms from the east coast and the gulf coast seem to aim for Fairmont, WV after they move on shore.

Hoping the flooding there subsides soon. As a native Florida resident and having been through many hurricanes and tropical storms, these slow moving storms are the worst due to the massive rains. Years ago, we had a lot of flooding from a tropical storm that stayed around for days. The maximum winds were "only" in the 50 to 60mph range. We were house hunting at the time and that is an excellent time to go around and see what neighborhoods were dry and which ones had standing water so you could see what the flooding potential was.

I am house sitting in a house on a bayou about 2 miles upstream from Galveston bay. It is on stilts. Last year during Harvey there was 8’ of water under the house. That amounts to about 14’ above normal high tide. Ike did the same thing. Monday night/Tuesday morning there was about 4 inches downstairs. It has receded about 2’ but the rain keeps coming so I expect the water to come back up sometime before it is over.
I live about 6 miles from here and while my house is about a mile from the water it has never gotten into the house. Last year during the height of Harvey it got up to the front step. I was a tad nervous. Since it went through Ike and every other storm fine I figured there wouldn’t be a problem.

You stayed dry thru 4 feet of rain? Kept that house man!

That is a lot of water. Do you have an escape plan in case the waters rise too much or there is structural damage to the house you are house sitting? I would think that your other house would be ok if it survived the historic flooding of Harvey.

There is no storm surge expected here so my plan is just to monitor it until the water comes back under the house or the electricity goes off. I have waded into and out of this house so many times I know where to walk to keep it less than waist deep. As a worst case scenario I have an inflated kayak tied off downstairs.
I will probably lock it up and head out just before dark. I’m running low on food and haven’t had caffeine since Tuesday.

Keep an eye on Tropical Depression Isaac. Looks like it might be coming up your way.

Yep. I have been watching that one too. Hopefully it will stay south and go towards Brownsville.

Thank goodness you still have electricity. In the pre-generator days, no electricity after a storm for days (or weeks for some) made things much worse, especially with the heat and humidity here. Stay safe...

It was just reported that a mother and 8 month old child were killed when a tree fell on their house in Wilmington :'( One family member survived. Lester Holt and NBC news was riding with the first responders who were there and you could see in the video the sadness of those first responders on the scene. Praise for all the first responders braving the storm and helping those in need.

It looks like the folks in New Bern are really getting it. The Neuse River is already flooding. The river runs up towards Raleigh, so it will continue to fill with rain and will continue to flood.

Some of the same for another NC river city, Jacksonville and the New River.
Florence on track to visit herself in SC.

Parts of VA, NC, MD etc was getting lotsa rain last month with some localized flooding and concern about some bridges. But not one particular storm. And parts of PA n OH. But more water won't be good. I agree with others' assesments after the initial 'hit' the worst is flooding, depending on flashfloods or water not getting ability to leave so just soaking, molding, letting chemicals, sewage, etc leech in and so on.

My internet is wonky. Hopefully this link works. A weatherman is shown “bracing†against the wind and two guys stroll normally behind him.

As someone who used to face into 40-50mph winds on a regular basis flying R/C gliders (Often in winter) I can vouch it's actually easier to walk than stay in one place. Except when launching or recovering a glider when it became a sail and took you along at a fair pace.

Nice to see ya, pud. I've missed you so I bumped you up a praise point.

In other news, today was the hottest day of the summer in Atlanta. It got up to 95 degrees at the airport. I can see the thunderstorms at the edge of Florence in the distance.

This sucks. Only Saving Grave, I joke somewhat, about Harvey was Houston, somehow, wasn't as hot as could be. That and, again, a joke I used while rehabbing, "the benzene and contaminants killed the skeeters."

Ha! Cantore would have been flat on his back, hanging on for dear life, and crying for his mommy. ;) ;D

In a year the demokkkrat media will be reporting that as 37, 137, 937 dead.

24 hours later and you're still a moron. Like taxes and death.

Apparently the bod in the piece had been on his feet from the very early hours and was fucked. Not really surprising then he couldn't stay on his feet.
