Ahhh, Freddy Lynn, fellow Carlsbad-area resident (and an occasional bump-into at Costco), playing center field if I recall correctly.

I remember Joe Garagiola explaining why he did the arm flap. It was because he wanted to make sure that he had proper height on his back elbow so that he would keep his swing more level.

It is amazing this stupid things you remember from your childhood as you hit the fifties.  Argh.

Yes, early on he'd developed a bad habit when batting of not extending his elbow, keeping it too close to his body.

Joe Morgan was arguably the best second baseman in baseball history.  The only other person who comes to mind is Rogers Hornsby, who played 100 years ago.  Range in the field, power at the plate, smart and tough.

I don't really like broadcasters - I mostly tune them out.  There are a handful that I've appreciated over the years - Cosell and Madden come to mind, Al Michaels is ok.  My personal favorite baseball broadcast analyst was Joe Morgan, a real student of the game.  I've heard people complain about him, I guess they can have the Joe Bucks of the world.

I moved to Northern California in the Fall 1982, and just days after I arrived came my personal favorite Joe Morgan moment.

39 year old Joe Morgan finishing his career in San Francisco, hitting the game winning home run on the last day of the season to knock the LA Dodgers out of the pennant race - an instant Giants legend.

Mean Fred Dean died, Wuhan flu.

Ex-Charger, 49er (I think he was with the 49ers).

Yes, he was a key part of that first Joe Montana/Ronnie Lott Super Bowl team.  He was also around for the second one but was hurt most of the year.

I usually find little fault with the Chargers during the Gene Klein ownership era.

When the Chargers traded Fred Dean to the 49ers, got sealed the deal for the Chargers and the 49ers. The Chargers incredible offense was no match to its horrible defense.

Gary "Big Hands" Johnson from that famous era also went to the 49ers, if I recall correctly.

Jon Miller and Joe Morgan is the national broadcast team I most remember fondly.

There was a little girl,
            Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
            When she was good,
            She was very good indeed,
But when she was bad she was horrid.
