Are those the California throwback yellow lettering on black plates? It was a sad day when they switched to yellow on blue, and then blue on white. The new yellow on black don't quite look right though, too shiny and new since we've only seen the older scratched, bent, and faded ones on old cars for so long now.
The color is also off, it used to be a brownish black. Maybe like licorice with sunlight on it. Now, they're black. Part of that is for higher contrast as California license plates are now being designed for optical recognition. I saw a black and white California plate that appears to be a new custom design. They look really sharp on white Teslas.
Going back to the optical recognition stuff, plates no longer have a pattern that a human could easily remember (85C24T3 vs. 8ATE888). They are more jumbled, but it doesn't matter because a computer's reading it.
