Weird, I can't figure out what I am looking at. Is that some kind of giant demonic alien throwing a glowing orb or one trying to grab the craft lest it pierces the dome over the flat earth and thus lets the "truth" be known to humanity about the arcologies and crystalline domes on other planets and moons?

@Rikki Gins posted a picture of a postcard of a Vickers Viscount the other day.
The Wikipedia page for the Viscount indicated that the last one left service in 2009 with GTRA Airways in the Congo. So I thought I'd poke around and see what I could find on
Vickers Viscount 9Q-COD. It was delivered to British European Airways on July 25th, 1957 and stayed in service with that airline until 1973 when a merger moved it to British Airways.
British Airways would keep it in service until January 16, 1981 where it would then bounce around between British Air Ferries, Oasis Oil, Esso Standard Oil, Polar Airways, Euroair Transport, Airwing 2000
and British World Airlines until the end of the millennium.
From there it would head to Africa with stops at airlines in Togo, South Africa, the Ivory Coast and Benin before finally being acquired by GTRA Airways in the Democratic Republic of Congo on June 15th, 2004. It would stay in service in up until 2009. It was then apparently offered up for sale for $250,000. Without any takers the aircraft was left out in the elements in Kinshasa.
With 50,631 total landings behind it there would be no more.
In 2012, an enthusiast from viscountvickers.net (there's a dot net for *everything*) traveled to the Congo to look at the possibility of saving the aircraft. By then it was in bad shape and it
was determined to be not worth the effort and expense to save it. In 2015 the aircraft disappeared off Google Earth and was apparently scrapped.

Just a simulation but a horrifying one.......................... Russian pilot lets his boy have a go at the controls.
-
Again a simulation but what an awful, crazy thing to cause a crash. Plane was leaving Shanghai and cleared for 1,500 meters altitude which they were about at.
First Officer gets confused and thinks they should be at 1,500 feet, so the pilot puts the plane (loaded with freight) in a 35 degree dive and splatters it.

NASA and Titan performed IV&V on the spacecraft flight software to ensure it would work properly. They would not pay us to look at the ground Software. That is how most missions are handled. I am not sure if it is still the same philosophy but the only ground software we had any involvement in was the redesign of the shuttle launch software at KSC and then from the beginning we were involved in the requirements for the ground and flight software for JWST.
Mission Control Software at JSC was never subject to IV&V.
Dan Golden had a saying when he was pushing all organizations to develop performance metrics. “If you can’t measure it you can’t manage it.â€
I added a corollary for when I would teach my widely accepted class on metrics. . “If you are going to measure it, make sure everyone is using the same unit of measurement.â€
p.s. If the ground controllers would have had the discipline to investigate why the course corrections kept being much more than expected, or if they had simulated the next leg with the new course updates they woukd have realized the problem with months to spare. They made the cardinal error by blindly trusting their own software and made the assumption something was wrong with the spacecraft that kept requiring larger and larger course corrections.

Most of the astronaut simulator training was accomplished at JSC using two fixed base and one motion based simulators. Moffet Field (Ames) has a very unique simulator called the Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS). It provided a real “seat of the pants†feel for simulated Shuttle landings, especially when simulating blown tires and crosswind landings. It didn’t have a high fidelity cockpit. And it didn’t have actual Shuttle seats.
I flew the simulator with Dick Covey after Dick had retired as an astronaut. It was quite an experience.
https://www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/research/technology-onepagers/vms.html
The hangar is still there. Today I believe Google leases it from NASA.

last i had heard was that it had to be torn down, but was being restored. i mainly recall it being really big and full of bats. you could feel the "pressure" of the bats screeching on your ear drums. the clam-shell doors were still operational when i was stationed there and would be opened during the various airshows. i flew a Beechcraft Bonanza thru it a few times.... in a micorsoft flight sim. 8)

They flew out as many as they could. I saw one report that says there may have been 22 that weren’t flight worthy. I saw some aerial footage that clearly showed some in hangars that had collapsed. Looked like C-130s and maybe P-3s in the hangars as well.

The B-2 was designed on an early CAD/CAM system, certainly the first aircraft program I worked on where such a system was used. Most of that early work was done at a now defunct Northrop facility in Pico Rivera, CA, then everything was moved to Plant 42 in Palmdale. I know the plan was to destroy the jigs and tooling at the end of production, but I don't know if subsystems like heat exchangers were designed/built by Northrop or one of their subcontractors. It's doubtful they were classified in and of themselves, but their end item usage and interfaces with the a/c probably were.

An educated guess is the guy got one of the belts of his restraint system tangled in the seat initiation handle and tried to pull it loose.

Tragic. One would think there would be a switch housing that’s cover had to be raised manually to access the switch. I believe that’s standard in Navy A/C as per NATOPS. I suppose if he was wrestling with his restraint system and exerted upward pressure to open the box and caught the toggle just right he could defeat that safeguard.
I’m basing the above on knowledge I picked up from sitting on a court martial board. The same is true of fuel dump switches.

Hawaii-Based F-22s Scrambled On FAA's Request But Nobody Will Say Why
Apair of F-22 Raptors were launched on an alert scramble out of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Sunday at around 4:00 PM local time. A third F-22 joined the mission about an hour after pair's departure. A KC-135 was also launched to support the fighters. Hawaii News Now reports that the scramble, described as an "irregular patrol," was initiated at the request of the Federal Aviation Administration, which reported an 'incident,' although nobody is providing any clear information in regards to what that catalyst for the prolonged scramble mission was.

Analyzing the ROC's response I guess @FISH Seeing what they can learn and maybe even trigger an incident. They can't be too worried about the ROC's submarines. They only have four and two of those are former US Navy boats built during World War Two. Nothing wrong with diesel-electric boats (https://www.usni.org/magazines/proceedings/2018/june/theres-case-diesels) but at almost 80 years old I am sure the crews worry aout ever surfacing again once they pop under.

A good read.
Meanwhile the People’s Republic of China is building the world’s largest submarine factory, a facility to build four subs at a time.6 Russia has built 13 submarines in the past decade.

I would bet that's not a real a/c, or even a model representing a real or developmental a/c. I think it's calibration shape used for radar cross section testing, or "pole cat" as the RCS guys call them. If this was an actual classified a/c, there's no way it would have been that accessible.

Some dim outfit makes the floats.

Some dim outfit makes the floats.
I wondered about that as well. Going back almost a hundred years, floats for US military floatplanes were made by a company called EDO. They were based in NY, near various east coast aircraft manufacturers (Grumman, Martin, Vought, Curtis, etc.) that built seaplanes. They continued making floats after the military got out of the seaplane business, but eventually got swallowed up in the aerospace industry mergers post Cold War. When I first saw that article a few weeks ago, I tried to find out if, under new ownership, they were still in the float business. I had no luck.
There are a handful of float manufacturers in the US, but they are primarily involved in light/civil aviation. Lockheed, as a company, has no experience in the design, manufacture, and test of floats, so I would guess they would try to form at least an associate with some company with that experience.

Very grim. I was less than 10 miles away when the GA aircraft and the Mexican DC-9 collided over Cerritos in 1986, we could see the smoke of the burning houses hit by the aircraft

Seeing the airborne retrieval of satellite film canisters brought back memories. Some day I might take the time to brag about how I discovered a systemic flaw in the way that 3 letter agencies had set up their priorities for photo reconnaissance that was shortening the life span of certain consumables on those satellites that would jettison their film canisters for airborne retrieval. A GAO audit couldn’t solve it or even begin to understand it. The flaw wouldn’t haven’t been a big deal with newer birds that had encrypted digital downlink, but the early ones only had so many film canisters.

Early in my career I worked with a retired C-119 loadmaster who, although he never flew any of the canister retrieval missions, told us youngsters about them. I remember him telling us, "You only see the film of missions where they caught them, not the failures."

Looks like the AFSOC folks at least are seriously looking at seaplane operations. Wonder if any one in a position of authority has considered just buying this Japanese amphibian, or maybe having a US company build it under licences. We've done the latter before with a/c like the Harrier and B-57 Canberra.

Yep, but I can assure you that's the best news LM and the F-35 community could have gotten. That's a maintainer training issue that is teachable, orders of magnitude better than having had a mechanical or system failure on the aircraft. That would have resulted in a world wide JSF grounding of at least the STOVL variant while requiried redesign and retrofit/modification was completed. I've been through that.

Ha! Yeah Rix and Gravity. Multiple camera angles - check. Not it only has a parachute with him which is unusual, it is *on* him from the get go. Wonder how many Federal agencies he has crawling up his ass right now? FAA, NTSB, FBI for sure. Since he turned his plane into a cruise missle - throw in the Forest Service, the BLM and since maybe the plane killed a rare snail or some shit when it crashed, the Fish and Wildlife Service. No environmental impact statement filed before the stunt? EPA would like a word too.
-
That video raises many questions.
-
If he did it on purpose, he did so over an area that could have easily killed him. The terrain wasn't conducive to either a safe parachute landing or survival/egress after landing.
Early in the video, did he show a baggy of pot?

There was a fairly large gravel field that he could have guided his parachute to, or made an emergency landing on, so said a pilot who posted a rebuttal video on YouTube. Also, that supposed bag of cremains must have contained only a slight portion of his friend's ashes. A regular amount of cremated remains would have filled that baggie to bursting.

Reminds me of when the Soviets tried to recover one of our F-14s.
I was at a push competition to make the us bobsled team in September 1976. The Navy bobsled team was made up of SEAL Team members. A grey gsa vehicle pulled up to the push track in Keene Valley, NY and spoke to the most senior member. He pointed to several squids and motioned for them to get into the vehicle.
I was assigned to the Intelligence division at Plattsburgh AFB with a TS clearance. The first thing I did when I got back to base was to go see what in the hell was up in the world that caused several SEAL team members to get snatched out of upstate NY.
An F14 had fallen off the deck of the John F Kennedy. Because I was reading raw intelligence the cause was not known at the time. What was known was that the Phoenix fire control radar and the AIM 54 air to air missiles were considered to be some of the most sought after hardware by Soviet intelligence.
Maybe @Uncle Duke knows the true story of the recovery. I’ve read a bunch of different accounts and none of them quite match what I eventually read in classified accounts.
The Russians did try to snag it. That’s all I’ll say. I think the book “Beyond Top Secret†has a write up. I did try getting the details from the SEALs later on but even when I was alone with them, they wouldn’t talk. And I wasn’t going to discuss what I had read in the classified accounts. I just told them I knew why they were jerked out back in September.
We have a bunch more capability today than we did in 1976 with RPVs. I hope we get there first.

Cool story. In 1976 I was in college and don't remember the F-14 incident. I do recall being at Langley in 1980 when it was announced the Soviets put one of their Yak-38 VTOL fighters off a Kiev class carrier/cruiser into the South China Sea. There was talk of the US trying to recover it, but I don't know if we did. When I worked JSF in the late 90s I talked to a former P-3 TACCO at PAX who claimed his crew spent hours trying find it with MAD gear and other sensors. Turns out the Yak-38 was a piece of shit, so even if we recovered it it's doubtful we learned anything of use.

BTW - I out pushed all of the Navy SEALs and made the team. One of them was selected as an alternate. The military was well represented that year. 17 athletes and coaches went, 9 active duty and 2 veterans. Mostly USAF. Another Navy SEAL made it as a 2 man driver and a Marine made it as a 4 man driver. Still have great memories of that year.

Yikes! Looks like a tail strike at about 17 seconds. I'd be curious what they told the passengers as they were going around.
I was on a Shorts 330 flying into Newport News VA that had to abort a landing back in the early 80s. Wasn't nearly as dramatic as the one shown here, but hearing the engines spool up within seconds of initial touchdown was an attention getter. The pilot claimed there were deer on the runway, but who knows.

That P-8A Poseidon was making circles overhead yesterday. I was out taking my walk and was able to get a couple of shots of it. I notice that the landing gear is down, and the numerous circles that it made leads me to believe that touch and go landings were being made at the local airport. Though why would an aircraft from a distant base in Washington (Ault Field on Whidbey Island) come all the way to an adjoining state to practice touch and goes?

The a/c the mature pilot is standing next to is a former Israeli Kfir, an variant of the French Mirage. One of the dissimilar air combat contractors flies them, I think out of CA. So that means the grandfatherly looking gent is a retired military pilot with thousands of hours time in fighters.
Those contractors operate some very cool aircraft. Back in the late 90s I flew into Partick Henry Airport near Langley AFB, and as I was walking to my rental car I heard the loudest airplane I'd ever heard. Roaring over my head was a Swedish SAAB Draken, a beautiful "double delta" airplane.

@ItsOver Here is a little payback from the Luftwaffe.
When I was a young teenager, my Dad worked with an engineer who had flown FW-190s for the Luftwaffe. He didn't like to talk about his WW2 experience, but for some reason he took a liking to me and we had several interesting talks. Most of his time had been over the Eastern Front, but late in the war he flew air defense over Germany against the US and UK.
When I asked him about the a/c he most feared, without hesitation he said, "The American Thunderbolt." He said it was almost impossible to shoot down, you could put hundreds of rounds into it but it kept flying. Conversely, he said the liquid cooled engine on the Mustang made them much easier to knock out of the flight. Their biggest concern about the Mustang was there were so many of them. He also spoke very highly of the Yak-9.
And like every other German, he knew nothing about the concentration camps.

Very cool. There are a series of videos showing the Royal Navy destroying untold numbers of Seafires landing aboard their carriers. The Seafire was a bitch to deck land due to their narrow undercarriage and long nose, and being a derivative of the Spitfire they were not all that robust. British carriers were also smaller than US carriers. The Brits lost far more Seafires to landing accidents than they did enemy action. Beautiful airplane, but not suited to carrier ops.

Doubt it's wine or cheese.
Pau sounds familiar to me. Possibly used as a staging point for smuggling arms into Spain during the Spanish Civil War, or as a waypoint for the Underground getting downed aircrew out of occupied France into Spain in WW2. I'll have to look that up if I have time.

Ukraine needs an international volunteer "Flying Tigers" air force, now!!
Brave retired and active fighter pilots could resign from their country's air force and join Ukraine's volunteer Flying Tigers Air Force. Western countries could donate/sell their planes, support arms and equipment to Ukraine's Flying Tigers all volunteer air force. Of course would also need to set up a secure airport inside Ukraine.
All donated/purchased planes, equipment and uniforms would have the insignia of the "Flying Tigers" all volunteer air force.

I used to bass fish on a lake called Toledo Bend. Two different trips I had multiple A-10s come buzzing over the treetops and pivot around my boat and others as if they had found “targets of opportunityâ€. As jets go, they didn’t have the roar of an F-15 but it can be a bit unsettling when you’re looking down the barrel of a gattling gun. You really couldn’t hear them approaching from behind if the shoreline was covered in southern pines.

Hey BooBoooooooooooooooooooooooo
My first boss at WPAFB was part of test team for the bear ejection.
The Chinese use dogs to sled test their ejection seats. I've seen video of a dog coming down under the chute after being ejected and hitting the ground running, then being chased down. The next scene was the dog being autopsied.

From the article:
"The Army is interested in adding a capability that had not been available before...."
Not quite true as a few different "personal rotor craft" were developed for the Army in the mid/late 1950s. Of course these were not electrically powered, but the concept was the same.

If I had to guess, I'd say this is an experimental surface designed to spoof infrared sighting and tracking (IRST) systems. With aircraft becoming so stealthy, tracking an enemy by infrared (vice radar) is becoming more important.

Presented by Pan American Airways System, this pre-war promotional documentary film is titled “Overnight to Hawaii†chronicles a Pan Am Clipper Flight from San Francisco to Honolulu and eventually China. The film highlights the pre-World War II flight paths of Pan Am along the Pacific and offers the viewer a life-like experience of being on board. The film underscores the company’s “Clipper Era†from 1931-1946 characterized by the 28 Clippers carrying different nicknames that symbolized Pan Am and served Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Founded in 1927, Pan Am was the principal and largest international air carrier and unofficial overseas flag carrier of the United States for much of the 20th century.
-
This promotional film for Pan Am's "double deck Clipper", the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, was made in the last 1940s as the airplane entered worldwide service.
The film includes some rare footage from Pan Am's history (including some awkward model shots of early aircraf) beginning at the 8:00 mark. The Consolidated Commodore Flying Boat is seen at 8:30, and the Sikorsky S-42 Brazilian Clipper is seen at 8:50. Check out the shots of the swimsuit-clad men removing the plane's landing gear! The China Clipper Martin M-130 is seen at 9:23 and the Boeing 307 at 9:30. The Boeing Model 307 Stratoliner was the first commercial transport aircraft to enter service with a pressurized cabin. The Boeing 314 is seen at 9:50, and the Douglas DC-4 at 9:58 as well as a Lockheed Constellation or Connie.
The Boeing B-17 "Buck Shot" is seen at the 10:58 mark followed by the B-29 and B-50 aircraft.
The film includes footage of trans-Atlantic routes, and a trip to Brazil and Hawaii by Pan American.

I used to see the USAF tanker version of the 377, the KC-97, frequently as a youngster. They were based a now defunct SAC based near Columbus, Ohio. Later models of the KC-97 had a jet under each wing to increase their speed to make it easier to refuel jets. The Stratocruiser wasn't as elegant as the Connie/Super Connie, but its design was a big step forward in aviation when many airlines were making do with surplus WWII transports.
Back 15-20 years ago, one of the Sikorsky biplane flying boats flew over. I assume it was heading to an airshow somewhere. Nothing sounds like a big radial engine.

Different angle that provides more context. The B-17, followed by a B-24, and a B-25 I guess. Not sure what the last bomber in line is. Almost looks like a Hudson but I don't think there are any of those left that can fly.

Yes. Really tragic. Of course, with the loss of life, and then two historic planes, especially the B-17. I’ve walked by the Texas Raiders a number of times at Texas air shows, and seen it fly. It’s even flown over my house. No mas. :( :'(

Dear members and supporters of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF),
I wanted to share with you the news of a tragic accident that happened earlier today. On Saturday, Nov 12, at approximately 1:20 p.m. CST, two CAF aircraft were involved in a mid-air collision at Dallas Executive Airport during the CAF’s Wings Over Dallas WWII Airshow.
The aircraft involved were our B-17 Flying Fortress Texas Raiders N7227C and our P-63 Kingcobra N6763, both based out of the Houston area.
The B-17 operates with a flight crew of 4-5 individuals, and the P-63 operates with a single crew member. At this time, we are not able to provide the identity or any personal information about the aircrew involved.
The Commemorative Air Force is working closely with local and national authorities who are investigating this accident. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident. Currently, no additional information is available.
We will continue to share information with you as we are able. It is always difficult to share news like this, however you are part of our aviation family. It is important that we support one another in times like this.

The J-16 is a real fighter, but I don't buy the hovering bit. Here's an official video from the recent Airshow China showing the J-16 being put through its paces. If it could hover, I think we'd see them flaunting that capability in what amounts to an advertising video.

The pilot of the P-63 was a pilot for United and had a substantial number of flight hours. From looking at the videos and the visibility within the P-63 cockpit, I can see where the B-17 could have been in a blind spot for the P-63 pilot. Even still, if the aircraft had been limited to flying at reasonably different altitudes, a collision could have been avoided.

I’ve watched the CAF do the “Tora, Tora, Tora†demonstration a number of times. I’m sure it’s well-choreographed and rehearsed, even though it can appear to be quite chaotic. Just speculating at this point but it looks like these type of demos need to be thoroughly analyzed from the control and altitude separation standpoint. If something can go wrong, it will, unfortunately. The pilot could have had a medical-type incident, too. I’m pretty confident it’ll all come out in the accident investigation.

I’m surprised anyone would say that, at this point, about the P-63 pilot. Maybe something will come out to change things but that’s a pretty strong accusation to make without quite a bit of evidence.

Susan Zimmerman was among the passengers on board Lufthansa Flight 469 when it encountered the severe turbulence on Wednesday.
Zimmerman, who is from Austin and five months pregnant, told CNN she had just finished eating and was about to go to the lavatory when the turbulence hit.
“During dinner service, there suddenly was a wind shear, the plane increased altitude, then we fell 1,000 feet,†she said.
“It was like unexpectedly free-falling for five seconds off the top of a rollercoaster, plates and glassware were up at the ceiling, and my purse from the floor flew behind me to the right.â€
She noted that on two occasions the plane felt like it was dropping suddenly and she could hear people screaming and glass breaking.
“I’m glad for the most part we are all OK. This was pretty shocking,†said Zimmerman. “There was a moment of ‘oh my God, am I going to meet my daughter.’â€
Once the plane settled, she said items from the dinner service had been littered throughout the cabin as though there had been a food fight on board.

Don't know if this is true, but assuming it is, how did it go down? The cappy conks out so the co-pilot gets on the horn and asks if anyone can fly? They then drag the body out and some random person hops in the left seat? I'm sure that went down well with the passengers. "Look dear, they are dragging the pilot's body out but it's ok. The dude back by the shitter is taking over. All is well."

Here's a PM I sent Bateman a day or two after the mishap:
I was waiting to see what, if any, additional information was released after they found the a/c. One thing unique about the STO/VL "B" model is it has an auto-eject system to get the pilot out if he loses control in a hover, such as losing his lift motor in hover. Since the a/c flew on until it ran out of gas, sounds like this might have been an inadvertent ejection, maybe an auto-eject malfunction. The USMC and RN pilots fought hard to not have that system installed, but lost the battle. The Russians had an auto-eject system on their Yak-38 STO/VL fighters, and they certainly had inadvertent auto-ejections.

For something like that to happen in Japan, it is a majorly, majorly, majorly big thing. Expect to see some resignations, maybe even some suicides. This is a country that transportation companies apologize profusely for being 1 minute late on the morning commute trains.
Haneda Airport is also my family's airport of choice for a over a decade now because Narita is exponentially more busy.
As some of my family is in Japan right now, only three of about 12 people in the house felt the earthquake. The house they were in is designed to move. The ceiling is actually separate from the sidewalls and is floating. I was there when a 6-point something earthquake hit and it was amazing to watch the ceiling move independently.

The Mexico City International Airport acknowledged in a statement Friday that a man had opened an emergency exit and walked out on a wing of a plane that was parked and waiting for takeoff Thursday.
The airport said the man had been turned over to police.
But dozens of fellow passengers signed a written copy of a statement saying the airline made them wait for four hours without ventilation or water while the flight was delayed. According to photos of the statement posted online, fellow passengers said he acted “to protect everyone, with the support of everyone.”

Four bolts designed to prevent the door plug from falling off the Boeing 737 Max 9 plane were missing before the plug blew off during an Alaska Airlines flight last month, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report of the incident released on Tuesday.
Boeing records reviewed by the NTSB showed that damaged rivets on the edge frame forward of the plug were replaced by Spirit AeroSystems employees at Boeing's factory in Renton, Washington, on Sept. 19, 2023, according to the agency's report. Boeing had to open the plug by removing the two vertical movement arrestor bolts and two upper guide track bolts for the rivets to be replaced, but photo documentation obtained from Boeing showed evidence that the plug was closed with no bolts in three visible locations, according to the NTSB report.

Boeing removes head of 737 Max program in wake of safety incidents
Boeing removed executive Ed Clark, the head of its 737 Max passenger jet program, after a dramatic – and terrifying – midair blowout in January underscored ongoing problems with the jet.
Boeing created a new executive position, Senior Vice President for BCA Quality, and named Elizabeth Lund to that position.
What a novel idea !!!

This isn't all that unusual. Ten years or so ago it happened to a Northwest flight crew who overflew their destination, Minneapolis. There was also a case that got a lot of attention in the 70s/80s when an airliner heading west from somewhere in the Midwest overshot its destination and headed out over the Pacific before a stew woke them up.

FBI tells Alaska Airlines passengers they may be ‘victim of a crime’
https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/22/business/alaska-airlines-fbi-passengers-crime-victims/index.html
The US DOJ opened a probe into the incident, and Boeing, in February of this year. That investigation carries the potential to upend a controversial deferred prosecution agreement that Boeing reached with the Justice Department in January of 2021.
The deferred prosecution agreement could have ended the threat of Boeing facing criminal liability for those earlier fraud charges. But the Alaska Air incident came just days before a three-year probation-like period was due to end, so the criminal probe could expose Boeing to charges not just for the Alaska Air incident but also the earlier allegations of criminal wrongdoing.
Boeing declined to comment.
