https://www.bbc.com/news/av/magazine-18078658/tenancingo-the-town-sex-trafficking-built This is not exhaustive or an excuse for me to "blame Mexico" because similar, or worse, happens in Europe, our inner-cities, Asia, and Africa etc but an example close to home and how an "industry" became prominent in a region. And because tactics used are similar to elsewhere. The crazy thing, to me, is that often women are involved in the "process" of recruiting and even sometimes "managing." I guess I'm pollyannish and understand that they themselves might be/have-been victims but still. And also worth considering that the "customers" for "exports" are, primarily, Western countries and rich Arabs and Asians. But everywhere. A sad situation, often under the radar of many people or local LEOs.
And not all of this is for sex reasons (though that is the most likely or easily profitable) but also for labor, household help, even working on fishing vessels, mining, etc. And for wars/insurrection/terrorism. There was a VISA (I forget now type) that was exploited by various diplomatic types from different countries for bringing in servants that were, essentially, slaves.
