What's a tin devil?
When I was a kid, I read somewhere that there was a long ago tradition of leaving oranges in the Christmas stockings of those kids who had been good all year, and consequently, lumps of coal and/or a tin devil in the stockings belonging to bad little kids. I think that Saint Nicholas put the fruit in the stockings, while a devil like being named Krampus was responsible for giving the bad kids a piece of coal and/or a tin representation of himself. This was way back in time, were talking 4th-century, here. I don't remember where I read about this old custom. I tried to look it up but all I could find was that coal was given to the bad kids. No mention of the tin devils.
