No doubt you get them too, right? Always with the broken English and the made up non creative name of the "agency" they claim to be acting on behalf of.. lol ::) I get them. Always through my company cell phone number.
Every few weeks we have a cleaning girl in to clean/dust all the blinds throughout the house. She's a sweet but naïve young lady, single mom and wouldn't hurt anyone. We're rather protective of her.
During her last visit a few days ago her phone rang (it rings a lot with one of those fucking hip hop songs that make me angry) and as is usual she puts it on speaker so she can continue working while talking. I was in the other room drinking coffee out of my CUSTOM ART BELL MUG that @GravitySucks hates when I heard her voice change drastically as she was being informed that she was under investigation for money laundering and smuggling drugs between The US and Canada. That's when I should've immediately stepped in. All the sudden she's giving her SIN number to the scammer on the other line :o :o :o
As I hear this I run from the kitchen (yelling, Noooo) to the living room and snatch her phone out of her hand and taking over with a racial (sorryl) assault on the woman on the other end . Call was ended but she had given out this crucial information. ??? I kind of scolded her like she was my own daughter as she began to cry realizing what she had just done.
We had her call her credit card company and everybody else that we could think of as well as the RCMP for some further advice.
My mom lost over 40k in her old age to one of these cretins and was so distraught that she never told us about it until it was far too late.

I got one where the guy told me that, to avoid jail, I had to go to a convenience store and buy a gift card. I had to stay on the phone while I did it. I claimed that the store was blocks away, that I was 90 and used a walker, etc. I whined and complained and described my journey all while sitting in my room watching football on tv. I kept him on the phone for 30-minutes before telling him he was an idiot and giving him the Dr. MD treatment. It was a great mental exercise to imagine the journey of a 90-year old man using a walker who was terrified.
Usually though, I suddenly develop a worse accent that they have, sNoory them by asking a lot of questions they’ve already answered, and generally make the call so unproductive, they hang up.
I think the only way to fight these people is to waste their time.

Kitboga also has a LIVE Twitch stream calling scammers, schedule varies but is usually some weekdays starting around 11am or noon (EST) and some nights starting around 7pm (EST) and it goes on for several hours.

A TL;DR post.
I have Nomorobo, I love it.
My dad is well into his 90s. He's rather active online and I had to create a dual computer system because many of his favorite programs are stuck in the early 1990s... On the more modern computer, I set up an administrator account as well as his regular use account. I did this knowing that he could be susceptible to a hack.
Because two of my older siblings have taken enough drugs in their life to be paranoid about everything, they demanded that I hand over the password to the admin account. I told them why I did not want to give it to them because of the potential for compromising the security that I had established for good ol' pops.
Well, they pressured my dad to tell me to hand it over. Within three months, my dad came across one of those pop-up warnings about a virus on his computer(I suspect that he was on a Russian porn site 😁). He tried to call me but I was in the middle of something so he had my dumb as shit 60-something sister on the computer just a few minutes later to help resolve the problem... She called the number on the screen, handed over remote access to a man with a severe accent who proceeded to copy everything on my dad's desktop. What did my dad have on his desktop? Everything from his prescription lists, his will and living trust, a list of family members' birthdates with email addresses and physical addresses, stock information, lists of his bank accounts along with their passwords and hyperlinks to log on...
Yep.
Within 3 days I was getting panicked phone calls about $84,000+ being taken from one account along with many other accounts getting small hits of $10 to $15. Since my dad kept running spreadsheet of his account balances, I'm guessing that the thieves were pretty stupid to be bothering with $15 hits while they could have just cleaned him out quickly. There is still a possibility they got a lot. Prior to the incident he was comfortably loaded.
I sent the siblings and my dad a very sternly written email. I explained that I had established security protocols to prevent this very thing from happening and that the insistence of me handing over that password facilitated the theft. I also asked that I no longer be told of any of the details of this because it is not my problem, but theirs.
The prologue is that the main proponent for me handing over the password, my asshole bro, had his portion of the estate cut by 50% (his loss is easily $650k if my dad wasn't cleaned out on the other accounts.) I also asked my father to exclude me from his will so that I could speak freely and not be obliged to ever speak to my siblings again. He refused. While he needs me to manage a few of his things, my enthusiasm has been knocked down quite a few notches.
He's a prideful guy, so I couldn't get him to do something on the news. The thing is, if it went on the news, my sister and possibly brother would have been the ones focused on and that would have been very fulfilling.
Eh... As a response to all the problems, my sister said "why do people do that?" she was incapable of processing the fact that somebody is actually evil and steals things. Her job? 20-year public school teacher. Yep.

Horrible story, sorry you went through that. I thank you for the comment about Nomorobo, I just put my mother's phone on it. Last time I was there she got calls ALL DAY from telemarketers.

Not my money fortunately. Although any inheritance to me goes to my kids. They'll leave college debt free and driving old Toyotas anyway, my dad's money could buy nice houses in most states for the brood.
As for Nomorobo, I actively report bad numbers to them since there's a ton of spoofed numbers. My dad adapted well to Nomo, he will only answer after the third ring.

There's something else that happens called phone spoofing. This happened to us last June when we received 211 calls from all over the US and Canada from furious people who wanted to know why were calling them over and over again. We WEREN"T calling them but our phone number was on their display and they were receiving random calls all day and night for the better part of two full days.
After a few hours of our phone ringing off the hook on day one I decided to answer a random call (didn't know what to expect) on the other end was some roughneck in the Alberta oil patch threatening to find me and beat me up. Another call I answered was what sounded like a very pissed off old lady in Texas "Iiii dooon't neeed thaas!!" she said that. She was as pissed as the guy from Alberta. perhaps she called him asking him to beat me up ;D
I noticed after some time that the calls I answered were no longer calling me back.. I took this as a good thing thinking that me answering was breaking that particular chain. That Friday night I stayed up well into Saturday morning answering calls from all over. By now I had talked to a woman in Chicago who when I told her what was happening said "oh, you're being phone spoofed' I asked her to call me back if she received another call from our number to which she had no problem with. (she was really nice) I never heard back from her so I assumed my theory was right. My wife handled all the calls on Saturday morning while I slept in.
By 2pm the phone had stopped ringing. To this day when I see Florida, Ontario, Montana or wherever I admittingly get a little nervous, but those are just scammers or salesman/women. The guy from Alberta never showed up. Lucky him ;)

@StarrMountain Kit has had some epic ones lately. The Twitch live streams are favorites because you never know what is going to happen and when working from home, I have his live stream on one of the monitors. Sometimes it's not easy to get work done because the videos and live streams are hilarious at times :)
