Tim didn't seem to get my point: Why would the experimenters invite that suspicion?  Why would they make their results look exactly like those achieved by tricks that can be commonly found in books on magic?

Ever notice that serious psi researchers never design experiments of a form that starts like, "Here, pick a card, any card...."?

OK, so let me sleuth this one out for myself, knowing nothing of the particulars but what I heard on the show.

The situation of the guest is unusual, yet not unprecedented, and becoming seemingly more common on shows of this type: a 3rd-hander.  She's talking about what someone else wrote up of a group's investigations.  So she's twice removed from the action.  Her point is to publicize some work that'd been done a good while back, got a relatively small amount of notice compared to other cases, and has since lapsed even further into obscurity.  I think I know why.

A bunch of kids who seem to fit a snotty privileged sophomoric intellectual stereotype hear about seances and conspire to recreate some great Spiritualist results.  Unfortunately since they are just kids they aspire no higher than to look up some common magic tricks to demonstrate their results by.  The ones with the photographic plates struck me particularly as fitting a very common trick described in beginner's books on magic and for which you could probably buy the props at Tannen's.  In fact these kids may have chosen such cheesy demonstrations for the lulz especially to see how gullible or "wanna believe" some people can be.  So not surprisingly, those initially interested among serious investigators take one look and go home, while they have shills claim to investigate them and conclude that they are not the magic tricks they seem to be.  However, they do get some notice from one particular student of the subject who writes them up seriously and credulously.  Many years later another paranormalist discovers this "unjustly neglected" work and republicizes it via such venues as The Midnight Society.  The end.

Darn, I keep getting Tannen's magic supplies and Tanner's legal forms mixed up.  Fixed.

Yeah, here they are in Tannen's catalog, known as spirit slates.  The principle is to have 2 identical-seeming surfaces, one concealed.  And the trick works by the same means as all "prediction" tricks: the magician's having access to an item at a time s/he doesn't seem to.

BTW, the person who introduced me to Tannen's was John Keel.  We went there one day.

First quarter hour tonight = really fun!  See if we can mentally piece together each of these two shows from their alternating fragments.

Hey, more than the first quarter hour, it seems now.  Let's see if they can keep this up for 2 hours.

The Frisell track interests me far more than the Nimoy track.

I learn so much from this thread.
I would never have thought that was possible when the show started.

Alternate titles:

Is that Cleaner or Dog Piss?
Fluffy is a rodent
It's too big to fit
You mean a repair is not $7500?
