Here is an interesting and colorful collectible for some people. Fruit and vegetable labels that were usually attached to wooden crates or bins of produce. They were primarily used for identifying the type of produce in a crate and they also contained the name of the company that packed the items. There are virtually thousands of produce labels out there and you might have even seen them in your produce aisle at the grocery store, though most produce boxes are made out of cardboard now.
These labels go way, way back and are usually quite colorful in design. I had a job once where I came into contact with produce bins, and I was taken with the labels so I began to carefully peel them off without ripping them. I think I collected about 30 of them and will show them to you as time goes by, but like I said, there are scads of pretty cool looking ones that can also be found on the internet. Some of the labels are pretty cool in design, especially the ones that show people (lots of kids) and cartoonish characters, like apples with faces, etc. Some are kind of humorous too.
This first one from my collection is in fairly poor shape but it is used to illustrate that produce labels can also be somewhat suggestive in nature.

Bart, Walks and Gravity... Thank you, boys, for helping to jumpstart this thread.
You’re welcome. I won’t always comment but I read and enjoy all of your posts. Here, postcards and 100 year thread. My grandfather owned a general store and butcher shop when I was a toddler. Somewhere I have a picture of me sleeping in a rectangular peach crate while being wheeled around on a dolly by my father. It was like the ones that used those labels. I picked Macintosh apples to make extra money when I was in the air force and we used wood crates like those too. It was a long time before I could eat a Macintosh apple.

It's an interesting little topic. One I never would have thought of to bring up.
I've been taking a walk on the wild side this week but will be coming home soon.

I used to pick apples after my highschool classes. There was only a one hour or so window before sundown, so I'd be lucky to make $5.00 for each afternoon's work. My grandfather and his brother picked apples for a company that used crate labels. It was a pretty cool label. I have a copy of it but have never been able to locate an original anywhere. I'm hoping to show it for Halloween. I wish I could have seen your grandfather's store and butcher shop. Bet it was pretty nice in there.

I was curious as to what type of produce earned such a 'colorful' label. Grapefruit? Oranges perhaps? I think that Phelan & Taylor are no more. Oh, there are still some remnants of it on the internet, but there are blank places when it comes to any solid information on the place. I did come across an interesting 1977 court case that involved the company. It seems that a couple of Teamsters entered P & T's property and beat up a couple of Latino (?) guys who were members of the United Farm Workers. To make the long story short, the Teamsters lost and had to make an unspecified payment to right the wrongs. (The lawyers got $6,500.00.) In any event, the guys who got beat up were picking celery.

I was curious, too.
I did find a phone number and may give them a call this week to see if they can fill in the blanks about their Bikini brand.

I got a bunch of fruit from what I thought was a Mandarin Orange tree. However the fruit is substantially bigger than the stuff sold in stores and the peel is not the bright orange. The taste is also far more tart or sour. The tree is about 10ft tall and approximately 6 years old. We've had a substantial amount of rain the past month and I'm told too much rain and less drainage and less light can make oranges more sour? But I also see that there are varieties of oranges that are sour (apparently used for liquors, perfume, herbal remedies, etc.) So who knows?

There is an orange tree called the Bitter Orange, also know as the Sour Orange. I wonder if that is the kind of tree that you have?

Thanks, I was thinking of that but the tree has no thorns and the fruit seems larger. Though from simple research, that is online search haha, it would appear hybridization is common in citrus and after hard freezes a "new" variety can even grow up because of grafting etc. Who knows? I ate one and it wasn't bad, but sour/tart but still "orangey" taste, an interesting taste. Might appeal to the kids these days what with their apparently love for "sour" candy? Shall I give them out for Halloween trick-or-treaters?

Mandarins are a type of satsuma. If they are easy to peel they are probably satsuma but some types are more sour than others.

Thanks. I'm guessing you are right. Fruit is large, coming in early, easy to peel, and no seeds in the one I ate. The only thing is the coloration and sour/tartness but it is mentioned that rootstock most often used in South TX is "sour orange" and different varieties of satsumas. Also some sites say that too much rain can result in more sourness. And we've had that the past month. Some of the fruit was even busted open like melons do with too much water. So who knows?
Just for you, I will post an aggie site with more information:

Probably Texas oranges and Ruby Red Grapefruits. No idea really. Don’t see them much anymore but when I first moved here in 72 you would see people parked on the side of the road selling oranges and grapefruit. I’ve seen that in Florida before too.

Here is my original Mr. Nectarine label and you can see how it has deteriorated from being poorly stored. I had thought that the labels were dry but some dampness got to them. They were stacked together so the white you see on the label is from the back of the label that was above it. Most of my labels came out better than this one. Oh well, at least you can see Mr. Nectarine's head.

Yes, the labels are a bit top heavy with apples and oranges, aren't they? I am trying to rectify that by locating other types of produce. This one is for you, Bart. Not just peaches, but Georgia peaches.

You would think that there would be lots of potato labels but I'm not sure I've seen any yet. I think one reason is because potatos might be shipped in big gunny sacks, at least they used to be when I was a kid. Yams and sweet potatoes have company labels though, and you will see them on occasion here.

I don’t know how pervasive the “5 guys†hamburger franchise is but they have really good french fries and they always list the exact farm in Idaho that the potatoes came from that are being served that day.

Thanks, Gravity. Ha, I spent some time over there last night and when I went back to my earlier posts, I could hardly remember posting some of them. I mentioned that in a post and I think Michael thought that I was intimating that other people had been adding posts or something. No, they were definitely mine, I guess that with so many posts being made over the years, it wouldn't be possible to remember each and every one of them. But you are right, it is fun to see all of the old posts again.

I bought a frozen bag of Red Robin steak size fries and they were nice and big and had a very nice flavor. I bought a second bag and wouldn't you know it, the fries were only half the size of those in the first bag.

No, not kidding. This was a legitimate vegetable crate label, I think from the 1960's. It probably was from the 60's because if anything sold back then, it was sex. A couple of different growers utilized the art work for their shipping labels.

What lawyer or reasoning made them put "on Lake Apopka" on the labeling in quotes? FLA is a crazy place, in many ways, but look how the area is, basically, "on" various lakes, swamps, etc. This lake is in the upper-right corner in picture.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
ps: Historically, more than 85 percent of the phosphorus going into Lake Apopka was from farms on the lake’s north shore. To combat this problem, the District and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) purchased almost all of the farms for restoration between 1988 and 2001. This contributed to reducing discharges of excessive nutrients from farms to the lake. [from wikipedia]

Yes, those must be knife cuts, but what an odd design, like mimicking the orange segments or going for a flower effect? I saw a video where a person used a knife but it was for peeling the whole orange and not making a clever presentation piece.

Thank you @DynamoHum, I didn't know that tidbit of knowledge but it certainly makes sense, label-wise. Winter Haven was also the site of Cypress Gardens, which closed back in 2009, except for the garden part which can still be seen at Legoland. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cypress_Gardens

Yum, I like that tomato, Shay. I'd like to have a big cheeseburger with a nice fat slice of that tomato on top. (With a slice of onion, and lettuce, and some ketchup and mustard, that is.) Is that tomato extra big due to the fertilizer in the soil? That name, James G. Tinsley might be the Richmond gentleman who was a pioneer in the fertilizer industry. (We are talking way back here, the dude was in the Civil War.) After he left the fertilizer industry he was involved in 'other businesses' and I wonder if one of them was growing produce?

Thanks, @BartEllProducer. Yes, it's kind of a roll of the dice on whether certain info can be found regarding these labels. Usually a packing company name, or it's owner will lead to something but also might be too generic in nature and will only match up with newer packing houses, etc. Also, a lot of my searches lead right back to the label itself, haha. In the case of the American Fruit Growers, Inc. label below, I got lucky and found a picture of (I'm assuming) their main office bldg. or a packing house, plus a couple of court cases that they were involved in. That's one thing about these fruit growers, they were often involved in lawsuits. I'm no Perry Mason, but I do enjoy reading the judges decisions regarding some of these cases. Some of them I don't quite understand and I'm hoping that mr. @albrecht will read them and give us the court's outcome in layman's terms. I think one of those court decisions below (American Fruit Growers v. Parker) involved an apples/oranges lawsuit. Only in this case, it was an orange/grapefruit court battle.

A quick scan, basically the Fruit Company was suing Cunard over spoilage etc and Cunard was claiming Washington State was not the proper jurisdiction because they were only soliciting business there; not actually operating there. But they had an office in Seattle. Both sides gave their arguments and case law and it was decided that it was proper for Cunard to be sued in Washington State courts and wasn't an undue burden etc. And so Cunard motion to dismiss was denied, as was the other motion to dismiss in the other pending case, and so the case(s) continue....

A brief read is that the court said basically their washing process is not patent-able because it is not materially improving, changing, reforming, etc the fruit. After the borax process (or whatever) you still end up with a lemon, or whatever, fruit.

Ha. I certainly do love some of these illustrated 'beauty' labels.

Thanks for the court decision interpretations mr. @albrecht. I surprised myself by reading the entire 'soaking oranges in borax is a process, not an invention' case. It took me like twenty minutes to get through it. I noticed that before the decision, American Fruit Growers were forbidden to use the process on their oranges. Also I liked how the Supreme Court judges brought forth information from previous trials. In fact, one of them was from an Anheuser-Busch Brewing case.
And in Anheuser-Busch Brewing Ass'n v. United States, 207 U.S. 556, 562 , 28 S. Ct. 204, 206, where it was claimed that corks for bottles which had undergone special treatment after importation thereby became articles manufactured in the United States, this Court said: 'Manufacture implies a change, but every change is not manufacture, and yet every change in an article is the result of treatment, labor, and manipulation. But something more is necessary, as set forth and illustrated in Hartranft v. Wiegmann, 121 U. S. [283 U.S. 1, 13] 609, 7 S. Ct. 1240. There must be transformation; a new and different article must emerge 'having a distinctive name, character, or use."
Did you see the familiar name in that American Fruit Growers v. Parker case?
COUNSEL: Earl Warren, Attorney General, Robert W. Kenny, Attorney General, Walter L. Bowers, Deputy Attorney General, Ivan G. McDaniel and George C. Lyon for Appellants.

@Rikki Gins
An interesting up-bringing and distinguished and interesting career. Among other things- and since it is Veteran's Day, let us note that he tried to sign up but the Army wouldn't take him due to hemorrhoids! Too much sitting around as a lawyer? ;) But he had an operation and was able to join up but soon after Armistice Day happened, so never in the field. But note the differences between back then and some more recent times. Trying, even getting procedures, so that you COULD join up for a war.

I envy you. Since I was a kid, I have wanted to see Cypress Gardens for no other reason than it's name. I guess there are large parts of it remaining within the confines of LEGOLAND® in Florida.

Snorkeling the Crystal River with the manatees and exploring the nearby Indian mounds in the state park there is another good attraction.

A 1937 court case (an appeal hearing) involving Corona Foothill Lemon Company over some water rights.: https://scocal.stanford.edu/opinion/corona-foothill-lemon-co-v-lillibridge-24891
The appellants, it is charged in the complaint, about the month of July, 1930, began pumping water in large quantities from wells situated on their lands also in the basin, which water they transported through an open ditch into the Santa Ana River and finally to points outside of the basin; that during the summer and fall of 1930 appellants so exported from the basin more than 500 miner's inches of water per day (the term "miner's inch" being used to specify 1/50th of a cubic foot of water per second), and sold such water for use on lands in Orange County, more than ten miles from the basin; that between October, 1930, and March 1931, appellants bored additional wells and enlarged their pumping plants and facilities for the purpose of increasing [8 Cal.2d 524] their exportation of water; and that about April 1, 1931, they resumed their exportation activities and transported from the basin large quantities of water, allegedly in excess of 800 miner's inches, continuous flow.

I do have a rather odd kind of color blindness. I have never passed a single color blot test where you see a certain number, and yet I can easily see the above red airship label. My deficiency is red/green and you would think that this would be a problem with traffic lights but not really. I can see the green, yellow and red lights ok but if the sun is shining extra brightly on the light, then I sometimes get confused as to which color is showing. During walks, bright red berries on shrubs are lost on me, I only see the green leaves. From a distance, I honestly can't tell if a sign, or a car is green, brown, red or black. Ha, I'd be a great witness if I were to appear in court to describe what color clothing the suspect was wearing.

Nice find, mr. a! That bottom label is in pretty good shape. The label side of the crate could be sawed off from the rest of the crate and sold, wood and all, for a good price on eBay. I'm sure that someone would love to hang it on the wall of their mancave, etc.

Obviously, this isn't a label! I'm hoping someone might know if the soldiers in this picture were wearing uniforms from the Spanish American War, WW1, or another time in our history. I'm really mostly interested in knowing the approximate time in history. I bought this years ago at a local pawn shop for a dollar and haven't had much luck online finding answers. I took the back off the frame and it looks like this was taken from a larger picture and wondered if it might have been a recruitment poster. Thanks to Rikki Gins and 26 Horses for their help!

Looks like that hat, which I believe is the M1902 or M1911 Campaign hat, began in 1902 and was used off and on until WWII
http://www.worldwar1.com/dbc/camph.htm
An early version was used as early as 1898. https://thelastbestwest.com/shop/cowboy-hats/military-hats/1898-campaign-hat/
I can’t see the rifle very well but it resembles a M1903 Springfield.

I had no idea how much information could come from a hat! I really thought it would be the uniforms that would tell the story! Also, had no idea how much one of those hats would cost! Holy Moly!

The uniforms with the knickers are a real strong clue but I am not familiar with when they were in use. They were definitely a throwback to the cavalry days but I don’t know if they used them throughout WWI or not. Rikki has a lot of experience posting WWI photos so he may know.

It really grabbed my eyes when I first saw it. I've kicked myself over the years for not getting an old B&W group picture of soldiers dressed in their uniforms. They were all lined up in neat rows and was like a panoramic effect, very wide pic and not so tall. I bet there was a connection to the pic I have.

I have done my homework and know quite a bit about them except what they were used for. I thought caviar but since the bowl part is silver and gold , I think it is something else. I'll have to put a photo up in the next few days and hopefully someone might know. ☺

That would be fascinating information, Bart. One thing about these labels is that most of these produce companies go way, way back in time, around the 1920s or so. Most of them are out of business and therefore it would be impossible to gain access to their company history or accounting firms. (As a young man, I once worked at a major orchard/worldwide shipper of pears and other fruit. Due to the nature of my job, I eventually had the run of the place. In particular, there was a storage room above one of the packing houses and it contained tons of file cabinets and other items of company history. When I wasn't busy, I would look through the records. It seemed to be mostly customer information, addresses and the like. I did come across a few items of interest, like a Christmas card from Franklin D. Roosevelt and wife, and a 1940's 78 rpm record of radio advertisements recorded by some announcer whose name was Peter Paul, or something like that. There were some unglued fruit packing labels, but I didn't come across any info as to who came up with the names.) My psychic sense shows me an image of a roomful of ad execs, poring over the pages of a thick, newspaper, like the New York Times...looking for ideas for names.

Produce crate labels can definitely be risqué/suggestive in nature, as these earlier examples show:

LOL! I don't know how I missed seeing the Humble Melon or Instant Sex labels. I have to admit that these labels are really more entertaining and interesting than I could have imagined. Mad Men might have been tame when compared to the ad agencies that came up with some of these! The watermelon one caught my eye because where I grew up, watermelons were cheap and plentiful. It was one of the ways to sneak a little vodka onto the beach in an inconspicuous manner. ☺

Yeah, yeah, I view all these lovely vintage crate labels from California, Florida, Georgia, Texas and Louisiana. One would think that in the USA there were no farms in the Northeast back in the day.
Jersey tomatoes & corn time has come. I had a Jersey tomato sandwich for my breakfast.

do you collect these and are they hard to find?
@Dancing queen. I once had a job as a kid where I helped move plants around for shipping and they were stored in reused produce crates that had fruit and vegetable labels on them. The labels had been glued to the crates but through time, the glue had begun to wear off and I noticed that the labels could be gently peeled off without tearing. I collected a bunch of the labels this way. I stored them in a box, in an outbuilding and there they remained for many a year. I recently came across them and they aren't in the best of shape, though some of them are still in relatively good condition.
Vintage fruit and vegetable labels are not hard to find at all. eBay sells lots of them but be sure to check that they are original crate labels and not ones that have been reproduced. If you have a large, antique mall in your town then you can probably find a boxful of unused produce labels in paper collectable areas, along with postcards, etc. I currently don't collect vintage fruit and vegetable labels but I would love to find an original apple crate label from an orchard that my grandfather used to work for in Monroe, Oregon. So far, I have only found reproduction's of that label.

What I like is that you get to decide what size you want. It is wrong size, just delete and pick another size. Now I want to see some good lookin' labels. :)

@StarrMountain Starr, I am so sorry that I missed reading your comment. Thankfully FISH has said the same thing that I would have said. The nice thing about postimages is that sometimes you might actually want a smaller image to post, and then you can pick one of the smaller image sizes to format your picture with.

Redlands Co-operative grew oranges. Some of their other crate labels show a wrapped orange with the name 'Sunkist' stamped on it. There is a place that still grows and ships oranges, in Redlands, California. Judging from this video, it appears to be the same outfit.

There was a guy at a place I used to work at who brought in a big kettle full of hard resin that he proceeded to warm up. By lunchtime the stuff was boiling hot and he wrapped individual potatoes in newspapers and cooked them in the resin. When finished, you put the potato by your plate and peeled off the newspaper. It left a wonderfully fluffy, totally cooked potato on the plate. Those things tasted great and I ate a number of them despite the fact that there were burgers and sausage dogs that were also on hand. I guess the Indians used to cook them that way, though without the newspapers, I imagine.

Are you sure it wasn't recycled solid fat, like butter that had been used for frying before, or some sort of Crisco - it would look yellow if it had been drained after use. I don't believe much in recycling cooking oil to be used again, but some people filter it. Mom used to re-use bacon fat.

Possibly 60 to 80 years old. Can't narrow it down any more than that. Finding crate label production dates are difficult, especially when so many of the packing houses are no longer in existence. (I saw another Stadelman's label on line exactly like the one on the previous page, only it had a pear on it rather than apples.)

According to my records, this is the second Humming Bird fruit crate label put out by the Tapo Citrus Assn. I'm not sure which page the first one is on, or it might even be over in the EllGab Garden thread. I do know that this second label is more colorful than the first one, though.

Wooden crates?
The crates were strange. They were made out of thinly cut squares of wood that were held together by wires. Once they were empty, you simply stepped on them and they would squash up nice and thin for easy disposal. I was unloading plants from them, so the plant company must have got the crates after they had been used by the fruit and vegetable packers.

I didn't know you were color blind. Can you see purple? I hope so.
-
I didn't know you were color blind. Can you see purple? I hope so.
Yes, but if it is in conjunction with black, then it would be drowned out, and would appear black. Same with the colors red and brown. If a car had a black top and a red, or purple, or brown bottom half, then I would see the car as being black, but only from a distance. Close up, I can actually see the correct colors. Same with traffic lights. I can see the red light OK, but not if the sun is shining directly upon it. Then I've got to wait for somebody to honk at me, so that I know when to proceed. Ha, so I'm a fun person to be stuck behind at a traffic light, but only if the sun is shining on it.
Policeman approaches me. "Excuse me sir, but did you see any autos pass by on that road, off in the distance? There was a bank robbery a couple of minutes ago and we're trying to get a make on the getaway car."
Me: "As a matter of fact, yes, I did see a car speeding along that road a few minutes ago. It was totally black, I remember that much about it."
Policeman: "Thank you sir, this will be a great help to us."
Me: "Very glad to help, officer."
-
How do you know there are such colors as purple, red and brown? Maybe it’s all a plot.

We started foreign language classes in junior high. We didn't get a choice of the language. They would teach either French or Spanish, alternating yearly. My two older brothers got Spanish, I got French. I think I would have made better use of Spanish than French, but I switched to Italian a few years later when the option was available.

Good for you, anniem. I believe that any learned language is beneficial to one's overall wellbeing. For instance, I would like to learn the Turkish language, for no other reason than to understand what Turkish singers are singing about in their songs. Oh, I know a few words here and there, like Ask is love, Beni is me, siz is you. You hear these words a lot in Turkish songs. But I'd like to know what the rest of the song means.

That possum reminded me of coming home one night after work. There was a possum sitting in the road and cars were driving over it (not on it) so I went to take a look. It had been hit by a car because its nose was injured. It was stunned and afraid, so I went and got a shovel and swooped it up and put it under a grape plant. I checked back after an hour and it was still sitting there, along with a cat. I looked again in the morning and it was gone.

Can cats and possums be friends or was the cat taking advantage of the possum’s bad day?

Can cats and possums be friends or was the cat taking advantage of the possum’s bad day?
When I checked on the possum after an hour or so, it was sitting up under the grape plant and there was a neighborhood cat sitting right next to it. The cat did look at the possum as it sat there but the possum didn't give the cat much notice. I noticed that the possum was blowing out it's nostrils, to clear the passages in order to breath better. It's nose was definitely hit by a car. It seems like the cat found the possum interesting, and did take advantage of the possum's immobility to sit by it and observe it. It certainly seemed like the two of them were at ease with each other. I like to think that the two of them were friends, at least for that moment in time.

The public was admonished to “Drink an Orangeâ€marking the first promotion of orange juice. As a result, the orange, no longer a luxury item, became a staple of the American diet. Lithographed labels affixed at the ends of the wooden packing crates enhanced marketing of the product worldwide.

-
What's a tin devil?
When I was a kid, I read somewhere that there was a long ago tradition of leaving oranges in the Christmas stockings of those kids who had been good all year, and consequently, lumps of coal and/or a tin devil in the stockings belonging to bad little kids. I think that Saint Nicholas put the fruit in the stockings, while a devil like being named Krampus was responsible for giving the bad kids a piece of coal and/or a tin representation of himself. This was way back in time, were talking 4th-century, here. I don't remember where I read about this old custom. I tried to look it up but all I could find was that coal was given to the bad kids. No mention of the tin devils.

The Coastal Sequoia (Redwood) is seven feet plus. Just several inches short of being a full eight feet in length. It is a fairly straight tree except for a small crook near the top. I positioned it so that the slant will be drawn to the sun's path over time, and it should straighten out naturally.

OH! A big tree.
Years ago you could get a little redwood tree at the state fair. It came in a test tube, I was envisioning that. Any chance of a photo?

They used to give us those test tube trees at grade school. I took a picture of the tree while it was still at the nursery. (I advise doing this as it is fun to see what one's tree or plant looks like from the beginning.) It is the second potted tree from the left on the front row. All of the trees were almost eight feet high, but mine was slightly taller than the rest.

We had two cherry trees in the backyard in the home I grew up in. They had pits. We also had a couple crab apple trees. Though my mother tried, those did not make nice pies. But my Dad could grow the heck out of Rutgers tomatoes.

Yes, I was the one who peeled it off the box. I was lifting full boxes of plants and pouring them into bins where women would sort them out, or put them in packages for mailing. I even had a job title. I was called a roustee, though I'm not sure how it was spelled. Very hard, laborious work. I doubt I could do it now. Anyway, that was when I started to collect the vegetable labels. The ladies were kind of tickled at how I would empty a box, peel the label off and then pick up another full box of plants to empty into their bins.

You might find this of interest. This is not a crate label, rather it is a thin tissue paper that was wrapped around an orange, apple or pear as they were being packed in a cardboard box for shipment. The box of produce might have been sent to eastern cities where some of the buyers knew that their customers liked to have fancy-dan papers wrapped around their fruit. This is part of my collection, though it is in rather poor shape. Still, you can kind of see what it says.

Absolutely. I started one from a seed and it lived for several years in a pot. In during the winter and out during the summer. You have to be careful about watering (needs good drainage), don't let it dry out, and guard it against frost. I never got lemons, though.

Yes, they had a nice citrus smell. You could probably make a tea out of them but I don't know for sure. Mine would flower every spring but they dried up and fell off. Probably because it didn't get enough sun in my house.

How long ago did you plant it? Is it a fast grower?
I do a weekly video chat with my mom and my brothers, one brother is terminal so we want to be able to spend time together. My little brother is in our family home, and he showed us the huge trees that my father planted 40 something years ago. We all remember jumping over them back then.

I picked it up at a nursery, in a small pot, and put it into a bigger pot, where it grew about five or six feet high, over six or seven years. I very nearly gave it away to someone when I couldn't find a spot to plant it, but then I dug a hole where the pot was and planted it there. That was about two years ago and it is now about ten feet high. It's not very far from my backyard deck, and I'll have to deal with it being too close, in another fifty or sixty years. I'll try to get a picture of it for the EllGab Garden thread.

Many years ago I had a job where I was processing and packaging plants for retail shipment to customers. The rough stock, like daylilies, begonias, gladiolas and the like, were shipped from the produce belt in California. The growers down there used vegetable and fruit crates to ship the plants in. Many of them still had the original produce labels on them. So I helped myself to them.
-
"I sure would hate for anything to, you know, happen to your produce truck..."
You can still find produce boxes at your local grocery store. In the produce department where you see the employees restocking the fruits and vegetables. Only now a days, all of the crates are made out of printed cardboard. Good luck trying to peel the labels off of them.

Huh. I still want to have the fantasy of you hijacking trucks. ;) :D
You certainly know me, @ShayP. I would gladly jump at the chance to hijack a produce truck, but on two conditions. The first, I'll need a copy of the produce truck's delivery route. I know for a fact that your photocopy company does all the photo and printing work for that trucking agency, so would one measly copy of a map or printed delivery schedule be missed? I would really need it in order to lie in wait for the truck.

That's right, Gravity. You have the modern day equivalent of a produce crate with a paper label attached to it. I used to notice printed, cardboard banana boxes in the produce aisle, back when I used to go inside my local grocery store. I was always tempted to approach the produce man and ask him if he knew about vintage fruit and produce labels.

As a change of pace, here is an unused label for a perfume bottle. I finally broke down and bought some labels from one of the leading experts on vintage agricultural labels, a Mr. Dwayne Rogers. Dwayne sells thousands of vintage labels that are in mint condition because they were never placed on boxes or crates. He has lots of other types of labels also, like the one shown above. Actually that was a free label that Dwayne placed along with the labels that I had purchased. Bacorn's was in existence back in the 1920's, so that label is very nearly 100 years old.

Indeed it is. I'd frame it and hang it on a wall. It's beautiful yet the blue tree trunks along with the black shading makes it haunting in a way.

Shay, you just put your finger on a great way to display vintage fruit crate labels. (Just now I went to my crate label supplier to see if the above label was in stock but he didn't have one.) Decades ago I took some of my labels and decoupaged them onto wooden frames to be hung on walls. It worked great. Just another way to get the most out of those labels.

@Rikki Gins Did you manage to keep any of the ones you hung, or were just lost over time? Also, where did you hang them? If I had a big enough kitchen I'd do something like that. I would definitely frame the one I mentioned. I came across alot of those over the years. I appreciated them but never took interest. Since you've been doing this thread I became interested. Damn peer pressure! ;D ;)

Hi @ShayP. I only made about half a dozen decoupage projects. Three of them were from paper soap containers with a different flower on each one. I did a big one that showed a bear cub from a local pear orchard. A big one that showed sweet potatoes and one small one that was round and made of a wooden knot hole plug. (The plug fell from a tree, leaving a knot hole.) I took that plug and hand sanded it for hours before decoupaging a small picture of a sailing ship that I had cut out of a larger fruit crate label. The other labels were put on blank wooden plaques that can be purchased in hobby stores. Those plaques come in all sizes and it was easy to find ones that fit the labels. I would paint the plaques first and when dry, glue the labels down flat and apply layers of decoupage on top. It's hard to remember but after that, I think I attached some wall hangers to them. They came out very nice. I don't have them because I utilized them as Christmas gifts, etc. Thanks for your interest, Shay.

@juan these are the type of sweet potatoes that you are growing? Correct?
-
@FISH they are Porto ricans. I don’t know about the Louisiana part.

I almost don't like Summer. Too hot and humid in Philly. However, I am a fan of the Jersey tomatoes and corn @anniem ;)
Sweet potatoes are always at the top of my list. Happy growing...

@anniem I am going DOWN the SHORE for 7 days. I hope to buy some fresh fruits and vegetables. Outside my vacation home, a Jersey truck will be driving down the street selling fresh 'stuff.'

I hope you will be able to watch the waves, if not go in them @FISH . We would go to Bayhead. Also the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Wildwood. And though I didn't eat them, I enjoyed going crabbing. Maybe it is too early for that. One time we went picking blueberries. The mud stole my shoe.

The mud always steals shoes. I am an excellent crabber.
Catch you later... @anniem ;)

Obviously not a produce label, but an unused perfume label that I purchased from a seller of mint, unused labels. This French perfume label was printed in the 1920s.

I don't understand this at all. I feel like it should be a nose or ear joke. Also, I can only think of peppers when I see "Big Jim".

I researched the grower's last name. Found a picture of an old man that might have been the guy on the label. If so, then I imagine that he was known among his fellow orchardists as having a big nose, and for growing big pears. I grew some Big Jim peppers a number of years back. They were truly big and were great for hanging and drying. But the peppers were developed in 1975, so Jim the pear grower came up with the name first.

Yes, and I like the rather poor attempt at mirror-image-to-infinity on the crate label.
