Title: Your Desert Island Movie List
Post by: KSM on February 24, 2024, 02:09:08 PM
Here's how it works. You don't have to list all 20 at once. I know that I can't so it's going to take some time. Please keep monitor your progress as you build your collection. You can NOT cancel your order. Once you've made a selection and added it to your library the selection can not be undone, so choose wisely and do not be hasty.

You get 20. That's it!

You can simply list or post the video trailers, and hey, if you feel like telling the class WHY you're taking a particular movie to unsaid island you can. And of course you can comment on and discuss other members picks.

In no particular order or preference, I can name two of my selections.

Tin Men 1987 - Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito.
Barfly 1987 - Mickey Rourke and Fay Dunaway

I am at 2.

Didn't know they were both 1987 productions until now.. hmm.

Psycho - the windshield wipers and Herrmann's score.

KSM, another fine subject for a thread.  Your 007 theme was a hit, this one will be interesting too.  I've got to commend  you on your choice of Barfly.  This was still when Rourke was on his way to becoming the next greatest American actor before he took a left on Freakazoid Street.  Barfly is a very good film.

Rushmore. Wes Anderson's second film and possibly still his best (Grand Budapest Hotel runs it close). Arguably also Bill Murray's best too. It's funny and touching and Anderson isn't an insufferable pain in the arse with his 'look at me, I'm Wes Anderson' directing style that makes me want to chew my own arm off.

F For Fake. Orson Welles was so huge by this time he practically needed his own zip code. Citizen Kane is so mythologised it's impossible to watch it with an open mind but this one utilitises all his talents (he loved editing and he was a big fat fucking liar) and it works brilliantly. It's all about frauds, including him, and it totally works.

Lawrence of Arabia. Watch it on a big screen, if you can. Despite looking nothing like Lawrence, O'Toole captures his essential weirdness. It doesn't have any women (which should please BJM) and it doesn't feel like it's well over three hours, but it's one of those films you have to watch if you have any interest in cinema. It's also a film you'll never see made again like this, with people like Alec Guinness blacking up to play Feisal.

Peeping Tom. This film is so fucked up. About a photographer who is a serial killer. It's really sleazy and uncomfortable to watch but worth the effort because it's a bit like M, it has a protagonist who you kind of feel sorry for, even though he's a monster. That isn't done very much and it was really controversial at the time, and even now it isn't watched a lot.

Northwest Passage [1940] staring Spencer Tracy, Robert Young and Walter Brennan.  Set during the French and Indian war, Tracy plays Robert Rogers who leads his Rangers on a raid against the Abenaki Indians. To this very day, those enrolled in the US Army Ranger school are provided with Rogers' 28 Rules of Ranging (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Rogers%27_28_%22Rules_of_Ranging%22).  Lots of good action in the movie and of course Tracy, Young and Brennan are excellent. Still get chills when the cannibal guy that was munching on the head of an Abenaki flips out a jumps off a cliff.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension. This has an unbelievable cast, with people like John Lithgow, Peter Weller, Jeff Goldblum, Ellen Barkin (who looks hot AF in this). Don't worry about the plot, which makes no fucking sense. Also, they fired the original DP (who worked on Blade Runner) so the first part of the film looks really good while the rest is shitty-looking. It's a definite cult film, but it has lots of quotable lines in it. It helps if you're drunk off your ass to enjoy it fully.

Withnail and I. A typically British film. Morose and depressing, about two unemployed actors who 'go on holiday by mistake'. Again, a cult film, and has lots of famous lines ('Monty, you terrible cunt!') that people like to quote at each other. I always like the ending, with Richard E Grant reciting Hamlet in the rain.

The Big Lebowski. If you've watched it you probably didn't like it. I had the same experience. You need to see it at least 3 or 4 times and most people can't be bothered, understandably. All I can say is you're missing out. It gets under your skin in a way that's hard to explain. On the page the script must look really lame, but somehow all the actors make it work. There's no point describing the plot, which the Coen Brothers made deliberately incomprehensible, like The Big Sleep.

The Big Lebowski is the most quoted movie in our house.  We know a guy just like Walter, everything he talks about has a Vietnam reference..."me and Charlie, eyeball to eyeball."

Apparently John Goodman has people yelling 'over the line!!' at him all the time. Hard to imagine Mel Gibson as The Dude, as he was first choice before Jeff Bridges. It's like Bing Crosby playing Colombo, which almost happened too.

Caddyshack [1980] with Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Bill Murray and Chevy Chase. I'm sure everyone has seen it and knows the deal. It is not going to be on any Best Films Ever list but it never fails to make me laugh.  Dangerfield is totally out of control through out.

Bridges said that if he hadn’t had success as an actor, if he didn’t have the connections, he most likely would have turned out like the Dude.

All The President's Men. Turn on the TV and find this on and I bet you find it hard to turn it off. It's just compelling in a way few films are. Despite knowing what happened, it still has a feeling of suspense about it. Redford and Hoffman are the stars, but Jason Robards owns every scene he's in. They really don't make films like this any more. Spielberg made a film about Ellsberg and the WaPo a few years back but it had nothing on this.

Once Upon a Time in the West. Charles Bronson as a total badass. Jason Robards as Cheyenne. Henry Fonda as pure evil. I have a weakness for Leone westerns but this is the best of them all. The opening scene is fucking awesome with the three villains telling Bronson they forgot to bring enough horses. 'No, you brought two too many.'

JAWS (1975).  Probably not a good choice if you’re stuck on a desert island, though it’s only an island if you look at it from the water, right?  Great movie, great actors.  Also a great book.  John Williams theme goes nicely in tandem with the first line of Benchley’s novel.  “The great fish moved silently through the night water, propelled by short sweeps of its crescent tail.”  That book and movie scared the shit out of anyone who put their big toe in the water, be it ocean, lake, pool or tub.

'Do you have to curse so much?'
'What the fuck you talking about?'

'I'm The Dude, man. Or 'Duder, 'His Dudeness', or 'El Duderino' if you're not into the whole brevity thing.'

'He treats objects like women, man!'

For me, it’s right up there with The Good, The Bad &The Ugly.  Fonda always plays a good good guy.  He was fantastic as a baddy.  Sinister.

Yeah, absolutely. Almost happened by accident too. They were going to use Bruce, the shark, a lot more, but the sea water messed with the electronics so they had to improvise, and show less, which made it more terrifying.

It's an iconic theme, but John Williams was a shameless rip-off merchant who cannibalised other composers' work. He took that from Stravinsky's Rite of Spring.

The Godfather. So much better than the overrated Part Two, which was only made because Puzo gambled away his money and Coppola needed a hit. Pacino was still an actor then, not a preening show pony, and you really see him turning into a monster right in front of you. The scene at the end with the baptism cross-cut with the murders is terrific. The scene where James Caan beats up his brother-in-law is so badly staged it's laughable, though.

Some most agreeable choices here from PW - Lawrence of Arabia, Once Upon a Time in the West, the Big Lebowski. Peeping Tom, however, I would rather not watch again. F for Fake, is one I will certainly look into. My first film for the desert island would be that exquisite treat from a distant and misbegotten past - BARBARELLA 1968.

I'm wondering how Walks got on with Peeping Tom. Definitely not a feelgood film and not fun for all the family. Unless it's the Manson family. All suggested, though, nothing graphic.

An exceptionally well made film. It definitely gets under your skin even though there isn't a drop of gore in it. Have no idea where they dug the actor up that played the killer but he did one helluva job - so much so that you have to wonder if he had some demons himself.  That camera, bayonet contraption seen at the end of the film is truly horrific. I'm glad that it was introduced to me here and that I've had a chance to see it.  No way I want it on my desert island though - once was enough.

Actually, a bit like the actor Werner Klemperer, he was the son of a very famous conductor, Karl Bohm. The dad had a fairly cosy relationship with the Nazis, so I daresay you're right about demons. I don't imagine his famous but conservative father was all that thrilled about the son being involved in something so scandalous.

Definitely a 'one and done' film, but worth watching. The girl in it was the daughter of Raymond Massey. I remember seeing a documentary about it years ago and the writer was a real oddball, involved in cryptography for British intelligence, if memory serves

1. JAWS (1975)

2. Florida Straits (1986)  A total B movie from HBO.  Not only a good buddy movie, but one sentimental for me.  A buddy of mine called and asked if I could return to our hometown for a weekend visit due to the fact that another mutual friend would be returning for a visit from medical school.  I was a couple hours away at the time so I agreed.  I got there on a Friday afternoon and called from a filling station when got to town.  Alan asked if I still had a membership card from a local movie rental place.  I did.  He asked me to pick out a movie and come over.  As I recall, the selection was pretty thin due to the upcoming weekend.  I found this...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

We all loved it.  We were surprised how the three main characters sort of mirrored us.  Raul Julia's character was kind of like Dave, an exile who wanted to find an old love (ex wife) and patch things up.  Fred Ward's character was Alan, they both had dead end jobs and were kind of floundering.  The kid, Daniel Jenkins, was exactly me, someone who had been meandering around from place to place "trying to find myself."  We had a great weekend together, maybe had too much fun.  It marked the last time we would ever be together again save for a couple weddings and a funeral.

The movie blurb:  A man who spent 20 years in Cuban prison after the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion and a boat captain and his crew go covertly to Cuba to find a cache of gold buried during the invasion. But can they trust each other?

Raul Julia left us too soon.  Great actor.

Anyway, a couple people have posted the movie on You Tube if anyone is interested.  If you like buddy movies, you'll like it.

Thanks for that. Fred Ward died not that long ago too. One of those underrated actors. I'm trying to think of something that has a personal resonance like that but can't think of one off the top of my head. There surely must be at least one.

Maybe Superman. First film I ever saw in the cinema. No one since Christopher Reeve has been remotely convincing. It had Gene Hackman in it, and there's no such thing as a shitty Hackman film.

I have heard of Marathon Man FFS, Bart! Jesus.
Marathon Man is appropriate for any list.

Give Hard Core Logo a watch, AKA 'check it 'oot'  The real band that stars in that movie is called The Headstones. Singer has built himself up a sizeable acting resume as well. He's in YELLOWSTONE!  :o

Yeah, Fred Ward was a really good actor.  Cast a Deadly Spell, another HBO picture is great.  A Lovecraftian Detective/horror pic.  Again, its on YouTube.

You are so right about Hackman.  Mississippi Burning comes to mind as a favorite.

Also, The Conversation. Hackman playing against type as this nerdy, reserved type, not the usual badass he plays. Incredible cast: Robert Duvall, Harrison Ford, John Cazale (who must have had the highest batting average of any actor: he was only in a handful of films before he died and they're all classics). The plot turns on the stress one of the characters puts on a word, and it changes the whole thing. But hardly anyone's seen it.

Beetlejuice. I have zero expectations for the new one they're making. In a way, Keaton's just too good and you miss him when he's not around, and he isn't in it all that much. He improvised most of his dialogue and it's like he's plugged into the mains, with all his manic energy.

That is a damn good movie.  A fantastic telling of the werewolf legend, Beast of Gévaudan.  I read about the legend in this book...

I felt they went a little overboard with the martial arts stuff, but all-in-all a good movie.  Nice choice!

Now, if you're talking about werewolf movies, there is few better than the original Wolf Man (1941).  I wouldn't put it in my top 20 though, but I will this:

1. JAWS (1975)
2. Florida Straits (1986)

3. The Invisible Man (1933)  Internet blurb: Jack Griffin, a British scientist who has discovered the secret of invisibility and has taken the drug responsible for the incredible feat. The drug, however, also drives the doctor mad. He ends up terrorizing a quaint British village and eventually commits murder.

Claude Rains, 'nuff said.  His laugh will stand your hair and give you goosebumps.  The special effects were great!

I must say, I've never heard of Florida Straits.

For my 4th, I add The Night Listener. Based on a true story apparently. "She's out there, and she's odd" - Robin Williams talking about the other main character in the movie who was a frequent caller to the night listener radio show.

Breaking your own rules?!  Haha.   ;D

I'm somewhat of a minor samurai movie fan.  I also really liked Predator (1987).  I can't quite squeeze Predator into my favorite 20 though.  I stumbled on this some time ago and thought it was a really good idea.  It's a very well done short that pits the blind samurai warrior, Zatoichi,  against a being not of this world.   I'm tempted to put this short in my top 20, but....not quite....clocks in at just under eight minutes.

Stalag 17 [1953] with William Holden, Peter Graves, Robert Strauss and Otto Premminger as actor.  American POWs in a German camp during the war. There is a rat fink the barracks that is feeding information to the Germans and must be stopped.  Shapiro and the Animal definitely lighten the ominous mood:

I would have put money on you having seen it before. The run time puts people off, of course. Some things you don't pick up unless you see it on the big screen. For instance, when Lawrence first meets Brighton he's going through a wadi and you see this huge rock face with a tiny figure in the corner that you can barely see on TV. Much more impressive in the cinema, as it was intended to be seen, because you see how huge everything is. The famous mirage scene is another one that loses its effect on the small screen.

There's an Art Bell connection too because that Harvard professor who wrote about alien abductions also wrote a book about Lawrence.

I had seen it once before but it was ages ago while I was in school. Had to take an elective in the Humanities, so I signed up for Technological Themes in Modern Film. 1. JAWS (1975)
2. Florida Straits (1986)
3. The Invisible Man (1933)

4. Flashpoint (1984)
First theatrical release by HBO:  Kris Kristofferson, Treat Williams, Rip Torn, Tess Harper, Miguel Ferrer, and Kurtwood Smith and based on the novel of the same name by George LaFountaine.  Texas Border Patrol officers Bobby Logan (Kristofferson) and Ernie Wyatt (Williams) discover a Jeep buried in the desert containing a man's skeleton, a high-powered rifle, and $800,000 in cash. The money and the man's driver's license are dated from 1963. Before long, the two guards find themselves running for their lives from Federal agents who are determined to kill anyone in connection to the find.  Again, this one is on Youtube.  If the whole Kennedy assassination conspiracy intrigues you, you’ll like it.

All this Sub talk.  Time to add The Enemy Below [1957] to the list. Robert Mitchum plays an American Destroyer Escort skipper locked in a duel with a U-Boat captained by Kurt Jurgens.  It was filmed on an actual WWII D.E that the Navy hung unto for training. It was my Dad's favorite movie and I have watched it many, manty times with him. Watch the horizon jump up and down in the scenes where Mitchum is on deck and they have close up. Wonder how long it took the actors in the crew to get over being seasick?

Great scene where Jurgens breaks out Der Alte Dessauer to cheer his crew up. "Sing it Heinie!"

Myyy-goodness son  we got subs up the ying-yang!

This thread is moving right along...that only has me slightly worried...I need to go back a few pages I suppose. But I was thinking about putting the Hunt for Red October on my list...I've seen that movie many times and always enjoy it.

So that will be your 1st official entry? @PolkaDot

You sure you don't want the French version? Le Dancing Dirty? I think KSM should at least downgrade your pick to Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. Just to teach you a lesson.
Note to KSM:

I'm tabling an amendment for the Ts and Cs of this thread. No girly picks. If this carries on we're going to end up with Footloose and Steel Magnolias.

I'm having flashbacks of the time they started letting them in to my golf club (some would call it an 'invasion'). I ended up bringing a crossbow to the 19th hole.

Rude. Are you sure your clean eating little arms could hold up a crossbow? And I like Steel Magnolias- Footloose sounds a bit too much like projection on your part. And I thought we were all getting along so nicely. *sigh*

You got my vote.
I just went in assuming that said movies and alike wouldn't be brought up. Am I giving everyone too much credit here? @Peter Wyngarde
What the hell man? The manchild starts spouting a little parliamentary procedure and you fall in line?

Look, it's not that I'm mad at you @KSM , just disappointed. Terribly disappointed.  :(

The new follow-up to footloose (Footless) follows the story closely but it takes place after a tragic skiing accident that resulted in gangrene amputations of the feets. Hence - Footless. It's a watcher for sure! Somehow the guy still dances very well on the stubs!

I suggest everyone has to pick at least one war movie, and one Western. That will sort them out!

Please.  ::) It's like you don't know me at all.
I've all ready done my Western- but I just finished watching 1883 and made me remember how much I love Sam Elliott so, my #4 Lonesome Dove the book is lovely but the movie- I adore.

War movie- #5 Inglorious Basterds.

That is a damn good movie.  A fantastic telling of the werewolf legend, Beast of Gévaudan.  I read about the legend in this book...

I felt they went a little overboard with the martial arts stuff, but all-in-all a good movie.  Nice choice!

A LITTLE OVERBOARD lol. I think a mentioned this movie a while back on another thread and remembered how batsh*t crazy it is when I randomly saw it in the theater . How did they pitch this movie, let's have a monster movie (cool) a horror monster movie (obvious) lets make it a time period piece (okay) with prostitutes and amputees'  (wait a second now) and hints of cults and religious conspiracies (this might be a little too convoluted) and for good measure lets add some random kung fu fights (SOLD!!!!)

It's funny I watched it when it first came out a couple of decades ago and it vaguly stays with you. I noticed it was on Tubi and we watched it before the Superbowl. Total bonkers but very fun  ;D

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas [1998] with Johnny Depp, Benicio del Toro, Gary Busey, Mark Harmon and Cameron Diaz.  IMO, Terry Gilliam did a brilliant job with this. He said "I want it to be seen as one of the great movies of all time, and one of the most hated movies of all time".  People seem to love it or hate it - I'm a lover for sure. So many great quotes in this film

Quote
Duke - No. We can't stop here. This is bat country

Duke -  A drug person can learn to cope with things like seeing their dead grandmother crawling up their leg with a knife in her teeth. But no one should be asked to handle this trip.

Duke: Look, there's two women fucking a polar bear!
Gonzo: Don't tell me these things. Not now man.

[Wielding a shower curtain rod like a spear]
Duke: Don't fuck with me now, man, I am Ahab.

Gonzo: I hate to say this, but this place is getting to me. I think I'm getting the Fear.

Duke: Let's get down to brass tacks. How much for the ape?

Duke: Bazooko's Circus is what the whole hep world would be doing Saturday nights if the Nazis had won the war. This was the Sixth Reich.

Duke: Dogs fucked the Pope... no fault of mine.

The fight with Norris is a different film The Way of the Dragon. In this one, he does hammer a very young Jackie Chan and his big fight is with some sort of Dr. No chap in that room with all the mirrors.

I am - I've heard the same about Dune 2.  I got through the first book ok. Could never finish any of the follow up books though. You'd have to be pretty hard core.

Along these lines, tried to watch Dune [1984] once with Mrs. Walks.  She had not read the book at all, so it was a total nightmare.

She: "What is that slug looking thing? Its disgusting."
Me:  "That is a Spacing Guild Navigator. They breath this spice called Melange, that allows them to pilot starships across the Universe."

She: "Who is that ugly guy with the dirty lips?  Its disgusting"
Me:   "That is Thufir Hawat. He's a Mentat - a human computer. They drink a juice called Sapho that gives them dirty lips"

She: "Who are those half bald women? They look disgusting"
Me:   "They are Bene Gesserit witches. They are a cult that tries to steer human kind in a direction they want it go"

She:  "If that Duke guys wife is a Bene Gesserit, why isn't she half bald?"
Me:   "I don't know. Just watch the movie"

She:  "Who are those guys in those silly suits? They look stupid and disgusting"
Me:    "They are Imperial Sardaukar. They are from a hell planet and are the roughest, toughest Mothers in the universe. They serve the Emperor"

She:  "Who is that horrible, little troll woman? She looks disgusting"
Me:    "That's the Shadout Mapes"
She:   "Those blue eyes look disgusting too"
Me:    "The freeman have blue eyes from the spice on Dune"
She:   "Well it's disgusting"

She:   "Who is that guy with the diamond on his head? He looks disgusting"
Me:    "That's the traitor Yueh.  He is a Suk Doctor and the diamond shows that he has Imperial conditioning"
She:   "Well he looks absurd"

Me:    "Maybe we should just put on a Doris Day movie. This isn't working, is it?"
She:   "Yaaahhh!!!!!!!"

YES. I still have to watch D1 of two years ago. It looks stunning on my screen and sounds great but I have yet to make time for it. Those Frank Herbert books were all around the house when I was a teen. I've always felt like I have to read the series in order to watch the movies, almost like I have to earn it. Haha, yes it's definitely not one for the casual viewer.

I think they missed a trick not using The Big Guy as Baron Harkonnen. They could have saved on latex, for one thing.

One rare negative about this one I've seen is that it felt rushed, but that's a problem with the book, he wraps it all up with a fight at the end and some shit with the Emperor. It's all a bit routine.

Mister Hobbs takes a Vacation [1962] - Jimmy Stewart, Maureen O'Hara, John Saxon, Fabian and NJohn McGiver. I like Jimmy Stewart and this movie movie always makes me laugh.  Stweart plays a business man who is offered a beach house in California for a month long vacation. He just wants to go with his wife, Maureen O'Hara alone but she invites the children. The house is a dump, the two older daughters are married to turds and bring their marital issues with them. The grandchild hates Stewart, calls him Boompa and hurls wooden blocks at him, the younger daughter has a complex over her braces and the young son is glued to the TV 24/7.

Stewart dictates all the hijinks in a letter to his secretary post vacation.

Well, the real life fellas who are portrayed in the film weren't exactly a non-violent group. Jus' sayin'
Shame that you cannot enjoy a movie on its own and enjoy it within your own experience. Just because many others like it doesn't discount or lessen the film, does it?

5. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)  Greatest western of all time.  Great actors, good action scenes, sprawling sets, awesome score, and a runtime of just under three hours which drives my wife nuts!

2. Florida Straits (1986)
3. The Invisible Man (1933)
4. Flashpoint (1984)
5. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

6. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)  I consider this to be my generation's American Graffiti (1973).  Funny, great music, Phoebe Cates (of course) along with Moving in Stereo by the Cars, and Damone's five point plan.

The 'Burbs [1989] with Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Corey Feldman, Bruce Dern, Wendy Schaal, Brother Theodore and Henry Gibson. Not an award winning movie by any means but I've seen it a bunch and it always makes me laugh. Rick Ducommun is also in it - never seen him in much of anything else but he is a hoot in this film. Rio Bravo [1959] - John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and an absolutely lovely Angie Dickinson.  Figured I needed a John Wayne movie - several really good ones to pick from - The Searchers, The Sands of Iwo Jima, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance but picked Rio Bravo as it has Dean-O and Brennan along for the ride too.

1.  Goldfinger

I like all of the 007 movies with Sean Connery, except for the very last one he appeared in, Never Say Never Again, which I found to be totally unwatchable.  After going over the others in my mind, I'll put Goldfinger on the desert island list.

Also, if I could have any one auto in all of the movies ever made, it would be James's Aston Martin DB5.  God, how I love that car.

Solaris (1972).

This one really challenges the idea of what it means to be bored. There are long stretches where virtually nothing happens. I remember a scene where one of the characters is driving for what must have been at least ten minutes, and that's it! No dialogue, no obvious reason for including it, but somehow it works. And there are lots of other moments where this happens. It gets under your skin in the weirdest way. I expect most people would hate it, but if you're in the mood for something different then it's worth giving it a try.

Did you know that Goldfinger's voice is actually dubbed? I didn't until recently. Apparently Gert Frobe's German accent was so thick that nobody could hear what he was talking about so they got someone else to do it again. You can hear some of them both on YT. There's so much to annoy people about Goldfinger. Slagging off the Beatles, the 'ching ching' sound effect whenever Oddjob appears, all the woman-whacking that goes on. All very enjoyable in this day and age when even kicking annoying small children is frowned upon by the Woke Thought Police.

They were showing Goldfinger near me the other day, including a talk beforehand. I rather wish I'd gone now because I've never seen a Bond film on the big screen. I was reading a book about Fleming a couple of months ago and it seems he was involved in a lot of hush-hush stuff. He was also fond of caning women.

Man, you had to tell me that?  Even though she was/is nearly 40 years my senior, knowing she was from the same God forsaken state I was from, I had a thing for her.  One of my very few Hollywood crushes.  I knew Kennedy was a regular he-whore, but did he have mess with Angie?  If I had been alive at the time, it may well have been me on that grassy knoll!

I found this (which breaks my heart):  Actress Angie Dickinson also lived a short fling with the former president. Per Andersen’s biography, Dickinson described him as “the killer type, a devastatingly handsome, charming man – the kind of man your mother hoped you wouldn’t marry.”

“It was the most exciting seven minutes of my life,” she said of sex with the former president.

If we hadn't been separated by a generation and a half and we would have bumped into one another at the State Fair....

Actress Angie Dickinson also lived a short long term fling with the former president BJM.  Per Andersen’s biography, Dickinson described him BJM as “the killer type, a devastatingly handsome, charming man – the kind of man your mother hoped you wouldn’t marry, but you did anyway.”

“It was the most exciting fifty seven minutes of my life,” she said of sex with the former President BJM.  Angie would go on to say she never regretting leaving Hollywood, for she was content to stay with BJM in what she called DakotaWOOD.  She was quoted as saying, "Once I made the commitment to BJM, I had all the wood I could handle."

And JFK, if you can hear this, seven minutes?  What a complete whimp!  Democrat.

Believe it or not, I've never seen any of the Star Wars movies.  Or the Harry Potter movies.  Or Avatar.  Or Titanic.  Or Forrest Gump.  Just to mention a few.

The Right Stuff [1983] - Scott Glenn, Sam Shephard, Dennis Quaid, Ed Harris and Fred Ward.

Love this movie about test pilots and the original seven Mercury astronauts.

Wow @Rikki Gins !! You should see the original 3 Star Wars, skip Harry, Avatar, and the Titanic. Forrest Gump is okay- wouldn't want to watch it over and over desert island style though.

Why have you chosen to skip Star Wars?

It's hard to narrow down my list- I thought I had it but now I'm worried that there's too much horror and not enough comic relief. Can my Man Candy bring a couple of movies too?

Also, I like seeing the year range of everyones movies...most seem to run in a thirty year range...I'm going to google mine and get the years to see if mine is similar.

@PolkaDot   I was raised on movies from the 40s & 50s and 60s but for some reason, when people my own age started making them, I began to lose interest.  Yes, I think it's an age thing.  Like TV, many of the shows I watched as a young man, I loved, but I can't sit through more recent 80s, 90s & beyond shows.  I think the Six Million Dollar Man was the last television series that I really enjoyed watching.  Don't get me wrong though, I'm not a movie hermit.  There are a number of contemporary movies that I have watched and enjoyed, but still, I prefer the older ones.

2.  The Day The Earth Caught Fire (1961)

A remarkable British film with top-notch actors, wonderful sets, and it was helmed by the great director, Val Guest.  Russia and America set off a couple of A-bombs at the same time, thereby causing the earth to head for the sun.  As things grow hotter, there is one last desperate course of action that just might save the earth from fiery destruction.  I've got this movie on a widescreen, Blu-ray DVD and I enjoy watching it every so often.  The trailers for this movie on YouTube are horrid but a guy made a fairly good video review of it.  He covered some good aspects of the movie.  I disagree with him though, when he thought that the film's leading lady, Janet Munro, didn't add all that much to the film.  I thought she did a great job as actor Edward Judd's love interest.  She was pretty hot too...no pun intended.

War of the Worlds [1953] with Gene Barry and Ann Robinson (who is still alive at aged 94). Figured I needed a movie with aliens in it and this is my favorite in that genre. It does stray from the book but it is not egregious, although I imagine H.G. Wells would frown upon the pro-religious aspects as the Reverend in the book was a weasel.

Trivia - The producer, George Pal, was a good friend of Walter Lantz who was the creator of Woody Woodpecker.  For fun, Woody makes an appearance in a tree.  I can't see him really clearly but he his there:

9. Kogarashi Monjiro-Withered Tree (1972)  Kogarashi Monjiro is a lone samurai and gambler who agrees to take responsibility for a murder that his friend committed so that his friend  can stay and care for  his dying mother, with the expectation that his friend will confess and get him pardoned once she dies. Monjiro is sentenced to a prison island. When he discovers that his friend's mother has died over a year ago, Monjiro seeks to escape with a group of prisoners in order to get his revenge.  Based on the book series by Saho Sasazawa, the movies spurred a couple different popular TV series.  Coincidently, Kogarashi Monjiro was a fan of Senda's live shows but was eventually labeled as a troll and sent to the cornfield, a future story called Kogarashi Monjiro-Withered Corn Stalk.

Maybe I'd change my mind once I got there and it would be too late, but wouldn't one of the main benefits of being dumped off on an island somewhere be no more TV, no phones, no movies, no apps, no texts, no software updates, no doorbells...?  What am I going to do, watch Apocalypse Now, Reservoir Dogs, and Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii twice a week forever?

Manchurian Candidate [1962] with Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Angela Lansbury, James Gregory and the always wonderful, Khigh Dhiegh.  A group of American soldiers is captured during the Korean War and are brain washed by the commies lead by Khigh Dhiegh.  Harvey is Lansbury's son and is the main goal of the plot. After the rather freaky brain wash session, the soldiers are released and tell a tale that wins Harvey the Congressional Medal of Honor.  The goal is to propel Harvey's step father into the White House with Lansbury pulling the strings. At the end of the movie, Harvey breaks free of the brain washing and wastes Step Dad and Mom.   Very good movie - there was a remake with Denzel Washington that is pretty good too.

Another Dangerfield movie for me - the guy just cracks me up.  He plays a wealthy business magnate that decides to enroll in college when his son is considering dropping out. 3.  Bedazzled - 1967.

The original Bedazzled is a great comedy and well deserving of being put on the desert isle.  A down and out Stanley Moon is at his wits' end and tries a failed attempt at suicide.  The devil appears (looking just like a normal person) and offers Stanley seven wishes in order to achieve love and happiness.  All the devil asks in return is Stanley's soul.  Stanley goes for it but no matter what he wishes, the devil is always one step ahead of him.

The great Dudley Moore plays the hapless Stanley and the awesomely brilliant Peter Cook plays George Spiggot, the devil.  Some interesting street scenes of London (I'm assuming) are also included in the picture.

Master And Commander being tossed about as a candidate. I've been considering it since the list started.

Nautical adventures.  :)

I love this movie. Total classic. High or sober

You mean he's a conservative so you think he'd be a big jerk. @TigerLily  Don't politicize everything.

He's an Aussie. Who cares about his politics? Like Canucks. I have so many favorite movies I wouldn't be able to pick even the top 20. I'd have to do it by genre and decade or even genre within decade. Too much

How about I share a little story about movies instead. The first time I got high was with my mom. Must have been the summer between my freshman and sophomore year. Our house sat next to a park. My mom came back from taking my little brother to the park. She found a pack of Marlboro Golds. But instead of cigarettes it had 2 joints in it. Mom was pretty excited. She told me , "you have to try this with me" so when my little brother went down for a nap I lit it up and we toked and coughed our way through "The Thin Man" and actually got pretty high. Turned out to be a fascinating movie and still one of my very favorites

4.  Morituri 1965.

Hard to believe that this black and white war drama wasn't made back in the 1950s, especially when two of its principle stars are Marlon Brando and Yul Brynner.  World War Two is in full swing but Robert Crain, as played by Brando, wouldn't know it because he's living a life of ease in India.  Until that is, he's visited by an English Colonel (as played by Trevor Howard) who exposes him as being a full blooded German living incognito there in India so as to avoid participating in the war.  Crain is a wealthy German engineer and the Colonel threatens to notify German authorities as to his whereabouts, unless, of course, he takes part in a mission of boarding a freighter loaded with precious rubber.  Crain has to play the part of a high ranking Nazi Party member, on board to check and see if all the crewmen are loyal Nazis'.  His real job though, is to wander about the ship and disable a number of dynamite charges that are located in hidden spots throughout the vessel.  Why?  Because the ship is planned to be waylaid by the allies, half way across the ocean and it's rubber cargo seized.  Yul Brynner is the German master of the freighter and he has been given explicit orders to get that rubber from China to France and to blow it up rather than have it be captured.  Thus the dynamite charges and thus Brando's assignment which he reluctantly accepts cuz' he's like being blackmailed.  So there's your movie, and it's a great one.

Brynner and Brando are awesome as the dueling Germans.  Wally Cox (a close friend of Brando's in real life) is also in the movie, playing a heroin riddled doctor.  Another favorite character actor of mine is in the movie.  Hans Christian Blech, who plays a political prisoner aboard the ship.  He is a talented seaman who is allowed to go about his work unmolested.

They used a nifty film effect while making this movie.  Clever use of a helicopter and a zoom lens.  It was used a couple times throughout the movie.  (That's Hans there, running down the side of the ship.)

1 - Naked Gun -
2 - 12 Angry Men - (1957)
3 - Indiana Jones Temple of Doom -
4 - Dr. Strangelove -
5 - Mulholland Drive
6-  Young Frankenstein -
7-  Batman (1989)

8. Cloak and Dagger (1984 movie) -  I am sure this is not on anyone list or maybe even heard of it. But I LOVED this movie as a kid, it's about a kid was given an Atari cartridge with secret military codes in it and the Commies want it! Super fun movie that I guess directed to kids (but there was many dudes being shot dead so not sure if it was but it is the 80s lol) but I remember even liking it a later on. Even though I just found out the dad/kid's imaginary friend, Dabney Coleman (boss from 9 to 5 movie) was not Gerald McRaney (Major Dad TV show) who I thought were the same guy  ???

This title is used a lot i see it on my TV guide and i get excited and usually get dissapointed that it's just some new Marvel series or a 1960s Gary Cooper/Robert Aldo movie which I will assume is more respected but I vote for the 80s nonsense!!!

@Walks_At_Night Wait. There are 6 Jackson LOTR movies. Are you adding all six or just the first three? The Hobbit is actually the first of the entire series even though it was the 4th movie made.  Sort of a Star Wars thing..

I'll pass on the Hobbit series. I think technically that would be a separate, distinct entry, would it not?

10. Time Bandits (1981)
11. My Fellow Americans (1996)
12. Casablanca (1942)

13. Slayground (1983)  Thieves run over a child while escaping after an armored car robbery. A deadly hitman who likes to taunt his targets is hired to track them down.  The final thief left alive (Stone) flees to England to look for help from an old friend, but the assassin follows. Loosely based on Donald Westlake's cult crime novel.  B-rate movie but being a Westlake fan, I have a soft sot for it.  The final showdown takes place in an abandoned fairground.

IMO the Hobbit series is part of it all. You are supposed to watch all 6 on a binge watch movie day. Start at about 8AM and order in lunch and dinner along the way.

Glad to see a few of us adding Casablanca to the list.

As TV movies are fair game, I am going with Cocoon - 1968  This was a two hour TV movie that served as the pilot episode of the original Five-O TV series. I am definitely a Five-O fanatic and this jewel started it all.  It is good one for sure - the only failing was that they had some stiff playing the Danny Williams character. This was corrected in the regular series when James MacArthur took over the roll.

The plot is quite good. An American intelligence agent is found dead on the beach. It has been made to look like the man drowned but McGarrett was friends with the guy and knew that he did not swim.  McGarrett and Five-O dig in and investigate the death as a homicide. This leads McGarrett to a student that the dead agent was dating played by the lovely Nancy Kwan. Remarkably, McGarrett takes her out on a date!  This is highly unusual as through out the series, McGarrett is typically a bit of a hard ass and doesn't have time dalliances.

Also during the date, one can actually see  Helen Kuoha-Torco's face.  She is the hula dancer whose hips are shown in the intro to every Five-O episode from then on:

McGarrett continues to clash with US intelligence agents played by Leslie Nielsen and Andrew Duggan.

As the investigation continues we learn more about the Five-O team.  As McGarrett enters the Five-O offices we get a view of the Iolani Palace where the Five O's offices reside.:

As McGarrett walks in from parking his bad ass black Mercury, there is a tour bus parked outside whose operator is played by Yankee Chang. They exchange pleasantries in Cantonese.  AFAIK this is the only time in the 12 year run of the show that we hear McGarrett speak anything but English.

We also get to learn more about the Five O team.  Chin Ho Kelly was played by Kam Fong and Kono Kalakaua was played by Zulu.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

One of the neat things about the original series was with it being filmed on location in Hawaii there was not a huge pool of acting talent to utilize. So they had to look around.  Kam Fong was a Honolulu police officer at one time and Zulu had a night club act in a Waikiki club. While not appearing in the pilot other examples of this are the criminalist Che Fong whom was played by Harry Endo - he was a local banker.  Kwan Hi Lim was an attorney who played lots of bad guys during the series.  He was picked because he looked 'sinister':

Five-O's investigation eventually ends up on a rust bucket of a freighter where McGarrett encounters his nemis, the Chinese agent named Wo Fat who is played by Khigh Dhiegh
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

BTW - the name Wo Fat was derived from the oldest chinese restaurant in Honolulu.  Mrs. Walks and myself had a memorable meal there on our first visit to the Islands.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

It turns out that the US agent played by Duggan is a traitor and working with Wo Fat to roll up US assets through out Asia.  In order to break captured agents, Wo Fat uses a horrifying sensory depravation chamber - hence the name Cocoon.  McGarrett is prepped for this torture and dunked in.

Everyone else eventually breaks down but McGarrett being McGarrett does not, and turns the tables on the traitor.

Wo Fat escapes of course and remains a thorn in Five-O's side until the final episode of the Series which aired in 1980 - Woe to Wo Fat.
When McGarrett finally arrests him.

5  Breakfast With Curtis  2014

This picture is my go to movie when I'm in need for some cheering up.  It follows a group of Providence, Rhode Island neighbors from summer to winter and the plot centers on Curtis, a young, introverted boy who has a hard time breaking out of his shell.  He is helped by his quirky neighbor Syd who sells mail order books from his upstairs rooms at what is called the Purple Citadel.  Curtis likes to film things with his video camera and Syd gets the idea of utilizing Curtis and the camera to make videos on YouTube that will aid in his bookselling business.  Great film, and Theo Green (Syd) is fun to watch, as are all the other neighbors.  The movie was beautifully filmed and one can really feel the atmosphere as time progresses from summer to winter.

I purchased the movie from Laura Colella, the lady who wrote and produced the movie.  She was kind enough to have autographed the DVD case.  She also acted in the movie.  That's Laura in the trailer, talking to young Curtis about the importance of summer.

Moby Dick [1956] - My all time favorite movie.  Let's just say the Ahab and me, well we share some personality quirks. There have been several movies/mini-series made of the book but I think this is the best and of course Peck is awesome.

Abandoned by his mother and living with his alcoholic father (Dennis Hopper), he hangs out with his girlfriend, Patty (Diane Lane), and his similarly aimless friends Midget (Larry Fishburne), Smokey (Nicolas Cage) and B.J. Jackson (Christopher Penn). When his brother, the Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke), returns to town, Rusty hopes to gain guidance and wisdom from someone most people think is crazy.  Stewart Copeland and Stan Ridgway on soundtrack!
