Title: Real Estate Thread
Post by: Walks_At_Night on May 07, 2022, 05:23:58 PM
Been looking for some property. A place out in the countryside where Mrs. WAN can have the garden she wants and I can have some peace and quiet. We've been looking here. Looking there. It's been quite a trip. Figured I would start a thread for some of the jewels that I've found.

We looked a beautiful log home with a great stone fireplace on a good plot of land. Some investors had bought it, shined it up and were trying to sell. At first they were asking way too much money so it sat around unattended for months. During that time the Carpenter Bees have moved in and were just chewing the place to bits. There were literally hundreds of holes with piles of saw dust. They had dropped the price to what it should have been in the first place but they'll have to drop it even more to get a bee fighting buyer.

This one is literally right outside the fence to Harvey Point which is some sort of murky, CIA/DoD facility.  You could sit on your front porch and wave to secret agent man as he drives into work, while listening to the anguished squeals of the pig men they are breeding in there.

How is Bubba gonna survive?  He doesn't ask for much - a double wide on a few acres and some trails that he can grease around on with his ATV. Gonna cost him 4/10ths of a million dollars. (https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/8970-State-Highway-96-N-Selma-NC-27576/69089029_zpid/)

WAN, this place can be yours for a mere 825,000 bucks.  But you and the Mrs. will have to move to God's Country, Monroe, Oregon.  Get it now while the getting is good because it won't be long before the super rich will be buying up such places, in a search for locals that have been labeled as being safe.

Remember that eastern Carolina is filled with rf, if you subscribe to the The Body Electric theories.  I remember some commercial blimp manufacturer would bring blimps there to test whether they would fly in high rf environments. They rf crashed a bunch of them.

Is VOA Greenville still pumping out millions of watts?  The TV and radio stations used microwave studio transmitter links.  I’ll bet they use fiber optics now.  So maybe there’s less rf.

I’d still look in Tyrrell County.  Just be sure the property is above the high tide level.  Be careful on 64.

@Walks_At_Night, I meant to say locales, not locals.  Come to think of it though, locals would work too.  Not that you would quit your job and move out west, however nearby Eugene has lots of jobs that would be right up your alley.  Also, you would like Hayward Field, the grandest track and field stadium in the nation.  The Summer Olympic trials are held there every four years.

A guy near me has built this on his land.
Seriously.
I'll take a picture next time I go by and he isn't out there training apes.
If living beside a guy recreating Planet Of The Apes is not enough did I mention it is lakefront?
Did I mention his midget Easter Island?

@Rikki Gins

I definitely would like to spend some more time out that way.  I've been to Seattle just briefly and did not get much of a chance to explore the Pacific Northwest much. I'd also like to explore south eastern Oregon some. From looking at the map, I am guessing it is off the beaten path.

Today the deal on the  sixth place that we have offered on did not go through. Who knew that trying to move out to countrywould be so difficult? This whole ordeal has been something out of the Twilight Zone. Some of the places we just got plain beat by others - fair enough. That happens.
One place we found that was for sale we really liked. It had a really nice pond on the property. The owner was there and spent over an hour showing us around and giving us all the details on the pond. Where the spring that feeds it was located, how to keep the pond healthy, where the fish hang out, blah blah blah. Mrs. WAN loved the place, put in an offer only to find the place wasn't really for sale and that the owners were leaving the country for one 'stans and would be back in 2023 and maybe we could buy it then.

Another place looked perfect - 10 acres down in the Sandhills region. Picutres of the house looked great - pictures showed a blue house and the details stated it had Hardie Plank siding and was stick built. Drive all the way down there and turns out the house was a bleached out tan color, the siding was vinyl and it was obviously a modular home. Still we liked the place well enough to put in a reasonable offer based on what the place actually was. The seller agent told our agent that there were alraedy offers at $100,000 over asking price. "Well - why don't you take one of those then? Duh!".  The  seller agent was hucking of course. Turned out to be a nefarious trans-gendered individual that felt she was protected and could do whatever. She ended up getting fired for lying on the details in MLS and now that pad is banned from MLS too.

Today's fiasco is some Art Bell type shit. Nice house, the land isn't quite perfect for what we want but could work. Told that the owner is a widower whomjust lost his wife of many years and staying there would be too painful. He also has a bunch of furniture for sale where he is asking way more than it is worth. We put in a very nice offer, tell the guy that we will buy a few pieces of the furniture at the ass rape prices he asking and tell him if moving his departed wifes belongings is too painful, he can leave whatever he wants and that we'll clean it up. The old boy sits on it a week, he gets some other offers but ours is still the best. Still won't accept it and communications break down - we hear nothing for several days. Finally hear today is the day - the seller agent will be reviewing offers at 9AM. Still hear nothing all day. Finally learn this evening that they have received a verbal offer that is better than ours. Can we do better? During this intra-agent chitchat, our agent learns that the seller agent is frustrated by the owner because he is getting bad advice from his girlfriend. Girlfriend!?! WTAF! Seems that as the old girl was terminal, dude was in some hot and heavy teleromance with some much younger Filipina. So the guy is trying to liquidate everything and ooze on over to Luzon.  Mrs. WAN blows a gasket and has our agent hook the offer. Meanwhile, while were tied up in that muck a better place came on the market and is now apparently gone.  :'(

Not desperate but the Mrs. wants a garden and chickens. We can get top dollar for our pad in the 'burbs right now. Apple is coming to town and them Cali types have equity to burn.  I don't think I'll ever have to drive into the office much again and having a few layers is not a bad thing.

Interesting that they are highlighting the old fashioned fuse box as opposed to circuit breakers.  I recently replaced my 73 year old fuses with circuits, as I was told that they would be an improvement.  When the electrician was pulling out the fuses one of them was almost too hot to handle, and this after the power had been turned off for awhile.

@sean92008 We've considered that route too. Some of the startup costs are daunting. Talked to the power company.  Might be as much as 40 grand to get juice ran. Talked to the well man. This is not Florida where you can dig down 15 feet just about anywhere and hit pay dirt. 10 to 15K a pop to drill and you might need two or three holes drilled. Then you need the pump and what not. Talked to the septic man - whoa Nellie. Big dollars there assumimg the area percs. If it doesn't - you are hosed. Talked to the pond man - surprisingly affordable. He just brings his equipment in, devastates the area and carves a hole. For once the Carolina clay is useful.

I have indeed but it could only be The Villages so I can grease on down to the Piggly Wiggly in my golf cart.

I have a friend that lives in Land O Lakes and takes his golf cart shopping. He has a tricked out 2006 vette that he never drives. And he never lets me drive it either. I have driven the golf cart.

He thought he was going to prison last summer. He teed off one day and croaked a sandhill crane by hitting it on the noggin.

So an indoor hot tub with carpeted floor. By any chance is the listing on Mold street? Perhaps Drywall Rot Place.

LOL!  The subflooring rots then one day they are enjoying the hot tub and they just fall through the floor.

Not sure what realtor was taking these pictures and didn’t bother to tell the homeowner this might not be the most universally appealing decor in the world for the photos. Totally not creepy. Not even a little.

I finally start getting back pay and new income and what happens? Political shit is hitting the fan and rocketing up red state real estate prices as Bidenflation has no brakes.

Areas I've looked at this past week:
Clarksville, Tennessee
Nashville
Vermilion, SD
Sioux Falls
Billings

Too many of the homes that are appealing (price and looks) to me are in this type of area... Apartments and airport...
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

At least I might get laid in South Dakota... Based on this crimemapping.com report, which shows people get their drink on:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I also have to wait until one of my kids makes a decision on law school. At some schools, the discount is a full 50%. 3 years of discounted Law School can make a home purchase cheaper than renting...

There’s plenty of “green stuff” in East Texas, like Groesbeck. Not everything in Texas looks like something from a John Wayne western. ;) Parts of east Texas look more like the Midwest than the Great Southwest.

That might be an interesting location.  Not far from trendy Waco, home of Baylor University, and not too far from the DFW metro.  The last time my youngest sister came down with her family, the place she was most interested in seeing was the Waco area, mainly because of The Magnolia, courtesy of the HGTV channel.

Things are tough all over. Looked at two place today - the first was on 10 acres out in the woods. Except the house is 16 feet from the property line and on the other side of the line is an abandoned meth house. The second on 12 acres that ajoined a real nice private lake. Perfect, except the house  was a thing out of Stephen King. The siding was cedar but that ugly, weathered, dark brown like on the left here:

It had a basement, which is a dicey thing here in clayville. There are happy, cheerful basements but this was not one of them. Had to go down a steep, creepy stair into the dungeon. Bad vibe city down there one could easily imagine Vincent Price walled up behind the cinder block. Not much better upstairs - behind the washer/dryer utility room was a funky little space that could only be described as an autopsy room. It had this wooden tray/sink thing with a drain in the bottom. Out of the wall was a Rube Goldberg of pipes with four shutoff valves. From each valve was hooked a tube.  Just perfect for femoral artery insertion and wash out.

It also had some convoluted spray irrigation septic system. Looks like it would cost mucho dinero to maintain:

Based on the lot, location and lake, Mrs. WAN was game but I couldn't do it. Everytimes you put your skivies in the wash, you would think about Humes, removing JFK's brain at Bethesda right behind the dryer.

I've seen toilet to tap on This Old House... Pretty remarkable. Living in Vegas once, I already lived through 🚽⏩🚰

I thought leech fields were already efficient enough, the extra treatment seems extreme.

Gray water is just fine...

I would be more interested in geothermal heating/cooling. Solar to supplement, no delusions of being a replacement.

I hear housing is going to tank a bit with administrative choices taking a stronger death grip.  I find my desired budget slightly weak but a market adjustment might be a perfect fit to get me into new construction.

Got another offer in today. Funky little joint deep in Johnny Reb's territory. Place has been empty for quite some time and the buttholes just left their chickens to die when they pulled out. Was a little bit of a hen holocaust out back of the shed. All except for one tough Mother. Clucking, strutting, pecking, scratchin' - all in the 98 degree Carolina heat.  Hawks, coyotes, fox, bobcat don't phase her.  She's been walking through the valley of death and fearing no evil at all. I didn't want a rooster originally but am thinking we'll need to get one. This is a superior bird.  In a year, I'll have an invincible chicken army.

A generous scholarship in Texas makes an in-state tuition less than car insurance payments. Big expense would be housing. Not as highly-ranked school, urban DFW area a little too close, but... Saving a school-estimated $57,000 in housing costs for the 3 years...

My biggest qualms are about trees so close to the foundation and driveway.  On the market 5 months, horrible decorating... Red flags or greed? Might be worth a low-ball offer if the foundation and plumbing isn't compromised if that school is selected.

Slab with trees everywhere.  Copper pipe through the slab (hopefully sheathed).

My dream home would be a ranch with a finished basement, uphill from the losers and good drainage. Easier to repair plumbing, cooler in summer.

Most of Texas is sans basements ☹️

Billings has an appeal to me... A cousin lives there. I have researched modular/prefab/mobile home on top of a walkout basement/garage new build. If I don't move to law school area, Billings may re-enter my mind. There's a sweet area close to Walmart, Costco AND just north is the airport.

If Wyoming or Idaho weren't so devoid of infrastructure, I'd consider them more. Eastern Oregon has Costco (in Bend) and is getting some "Greater Idaho" attention.

The homes in Eastern Oregon visually remind me of east county San Diego. Prices there are nuts.

Law school isn't pointing that way.

If I can save $45k+ on housing for 3 years of law, the house becomes a better investment and can be resold at a small loss with no worries if I don't like the area/weather.

The best Brady bunch house story ever on TV was courtesy of Breaking Bad's creator, Vince Gilligan. The episode of X-Files was called Sunshine Days (S9. E18). It featured David Faustino.

Back yard is awful. So is the kitchen.. Looking further, the interior is overall yucky and disjointed. Hard Pass.

There are a lot of homes in Los Angeles that look like that. Craftsman style I think is the term. I don't take notes when I watch This Old House, but I think that's the name for that style. Too bad the neighborhoods always suck with those LA homes.

I get several of those ads on my FB feed every day. ALL of the lawns lead right up to the garage. One depiction actually had large/HUGE decorative stones sitting on the grass right in front of the garage door. Such lack of attention to detail when they're asking 500K plus not bode well. You just know these houses are made out of ikea compressed furniture board..  ;D

My house in WA sold. In this market, and in Godforsaken Washington with Biden interest rates? Went for a somewhat of a bargain price though.. All the newer construction within a mile that is selling on average 695 of didn't help. Newest builds must be made of fresh and crooked Georgia pine and cardboard.  ::)

Guess I should be happy. One less loose end. Close the book.

I love this.  (A few days with an ozone generator will make all smelly-good.)

I had been in a Palmer & Krisel-designed home. The neighborhood had the likes of Dean Martin, Dinah Shore, Debbie Reynolds, Howard Hughes, and Bobby Darin living in it ages ago.  The quality of craftsmanship was quite memorable.

I am looking at Pahrump again...

I would like municipal utility natural gas, but am not seeing much in the places I have been looking.

Creating a "greenhouse" or shaded garden with solar panels might save money on clear-weather winter heating.

I would like to do a buried-line heat exchanger. Pahrump seems like the best place to try that.

I will lurk on this one because, with the way things are expected to go with even more valuation drops. Although if you look at the pricing history, somebody mentally ill is doing the sale.  I'm impressed with the lot although I wish the open space on it was facing south. I have plans of a solar panel plot that can act as shade for a vegetable garden if I pick a desert area home... Hell, an air conditioned vegetable garden... I wonder if chickens could handle that type of temperature if they were in the shade.

It's all about germs and energy. Although I do get it, having a puppy along for the ride means that it's going to come in the house anyway.

By the way, what I experienced moving to the Vegas Valley first time around was that some components suffered from extreme dryness and static electricity, I believe. I had two TVs fail, both Sony. My friend's dad was a VP at Sony and word got back to me that there was a planned obsolescence chip that would expire after so many hours of normal TV watching. I am presuming that lack of humidity increased the aging of this death chip. I had a ton of problems with everything that had an ebony fretboard, no matter how much oil and the guitar case humidifiers I had.

Something else that I did like was that, after a shower, I would towel off and the towel would be dry a short time later. It cut down on laundry considerably.

Tis the season...

I like seeing gas, even though it is propane.  I only have limited experiences with propane.  My parents had a cabin with a propane refrigerator and a kind of on demand water heater thing (which wasn't very warm but well water was FREAKING COLD). I wonder if its proximity to the Lake Superior would impact one of those heat exchange systems with the underground lines. I can handle 63-68 degrees in winter.

Do the guitars convey???

I do like the walkout semi-basement.  A lot of the insulation without being trapped by a stairway.

Oh, and why isn't the garage attached?  Is that from olden days when cars spontaneously blew up while charging?

As with California, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc... Michigan's run by major shithole cities setting the standard for the rural communities.

@Walks_At_Night, what are the "benefits" of the Ojibiwa?  Gambling, cheap groceries, cheap gas? (My standard is Costco and Wal Mart proximity.  Within an hour, preferably.

Attached garages are not all that common in Northern Mich. Not sure why - they would be a good thing.  Maybe snowmobile fires?

No CostCo for sure. Shopko was the mainstay store along those lines up that way but they all closed. Walmart would be your oasis.

I agree that Metro Detroit and Grand Rapids mostly dictate the states politics but the U.P. has wanted to split off as its own state for along time now. Maybe they make it if Puerto Rico gets statehood. Keep an eye out.

Benefits from the Ojibiwa Reservation?

Only the Indians can make a go at commercial fishing.  Lake Superior Whitefish are wonderful eating:

Casino workers often have that energy. I still remember a November 2004 experience at Paris in Vegas.  I was at one recently where I was approached and chatted up.  She said, as she was leaving, "watch my ponytail as I go." I am sure she was bucking for a compliment (she wasn't in a tipping job).  She was incredibly helpful and DID get a compliment in my "tell us how we did" reply.

PS  I have learned NOT to use players club cards.  I win MUCH more frequently without the players club.

CNN turned this story in about a liberal ignoranus without thinking about how fucking stupid they made him look.

He could have easily watched two or three different YouTube videos and gotten about four dozen tips on things to do before you sign on the dotted line in Italy.  BTW, one of my brood spent a semester in Florence, loved the fuck out of it.

I have a friend moving to Spain. In that part of Spain, if something is pictured attached to the wall, it does not automatically convey like it does in California. Installed accessories must be in the paperwork or they can be uninstalled.

Real rocket scientist there "It needed a new roof, that was a big surprise. The kitchen was totally exposed to the sky"  Didn't he or some sort of agent eyeball the joint beforing buying it?  Of course there are issues that can't be seen easily that crop up but being able to see the sky from kitchen is pretty indicitive of some roofing woes.  After all the bitching about some worn out little table or something, you would think the mold, animal feces and what not from having a kitchen open to the elements would be of a greater concern.

Dude is worried about politics in the U.S. so wants to move to Italy?  LMAO.

It was probably part of the "buy a house for 1 Euro" thing they have going on.
Not all are 1 Euro, we saw some as high as 40 grand when Bairyn was looking at it.
You can tell them to leave the sinks and they will take the faucets.
You can't rely on agents doing very much on these things because their commission is next to nothing.
For the 1 Euro ones they give you 2 or 3 years to renovate them up to certain standards.
It's a good idea to get people back into villages that are aging out but we found it was not worth the headaches.

You get these political idiots on both sides ending up in the same towns and shitting up those places because they can't get along there either.

It was probably part of the "buy a house for 1 Euro" thing they have going on.
Not all are 1 Euro, we saw some as high as 40 grand when Bairyn was looking at it.

That program sounds great. I'll mention it to my friend who's been looking in Spain.

Good point on the agent - commision on not much equals really not much.

Seems like you had better bring your wallet and work gloves.

I had a web browser with a bunch of windows open on my old cell phone it's been probably a month.

I had a few real estate listings open, although the likelihood of me buying another house is dwindling... I still think it's a good idea to have property outside of California.

So, there is one house that , when I opened it a month or so ago, it was $250,000. When I opened the window all the way and reloaded the page, the price went up $60,000.  The California exodus continues, I guess. I closed the browser and realized just now that I should've saved the link ha ha ha.

Well here is one that dropped $90K.  Of course you have to live in Kinston.

LoL  No Costco in Kinston - would have to drive to Raleigh for one of them. On the other hand they have a Piggly Wiggly. I've never been in a Costco but the Pig is probably superior, right?

I watch a guy on YouTube who's based out of Las Vegas. He highlights the crazy-assed asking prices where people are flipping homes and trying to make a 300% profit in a couple of years. Most of them have comps that are a fraction of what their asking price is.

That house does not look like one of those. 😁

Here's that guy...

With all that glass, two things come to mind...

No spontaneous fucking with the bitch bent over the back of the couch.

and...

The tyrannical law/tax enforcement agents can surveil you without much effort..

Then, a little later, the thought of insect intrusion came to mind. Bore in on the outside and make its way and move freely along the exposed-slat ceiling.

Attractive as fuck though (with a lot of updates). Just not on a corner lot with public roads a baseball toss away.

I keep an old cell phone so that I can play old Art Bell streams when I'm working in the garage or at night when I'm trying to go to sleep.... I will also use it to occasionally stream a baseball game or red eye radio, believe it or not.

When I still was using the device as my primary phone, I would do Zillow searches. Well, I didn't close a few of those windows and I was just looking at them today. Three out of three of the homes for sale late last year were pulled off of the market and not sold.

Sure, maybe those individual people's plans had changed. My guess is more that they thought they could hit a jackpot with a higher asking price...

I wonder what the geological report says.

My guess is that the terminology used in the reports are very, how do we say, euphemistic... Thus the requirement to have a licensed real estate involved.

I live close enough to the ocean as it is and I would never want to live an inch closer ever again. The mold, insect and weathering issues are bad enough. Add in in the idea that if you park your car outside it's going to rust is another issue.

New construction... This is what subsiding minority-owned contractors will get you...

Some wannabe gangster is so trying to get financing.

Maybe it's close to where Deion Sanders is coaching and they're hoping to get some school supporter to buy the house and rent it out to the players for cheap.

If you're going to rape a stripper, doing it in a private house is a lot easier to keep the authorities from finding evidence, unlike a hotel room where there are cameras everywhere.

Is the tile impervious to vomit and bile acid?

Sweet!  I've got a pretty good cuck chair in the bathroom story from when I worked in the old House of Pain.  I could share if there is interest.

I prefer the cuck ball in pix two - seems to open more options. Looks like the shower doesn't have a door and that the shitter is open to it.  Not sure that I dig that much.  Don't wantr to drop trou to take care of business on a wet floor.

It's some tax loophole where the company that is paying Baryn pays the mortgage directly instead of giving her the taxable housing allowance. That amount only becomes taxable if we sell in the future.

I was tempted to go see this place.
It looks like an antique shop in a brothel.

House prices in this place are off the hook and interest rates are in the 5's for fuck sake.
Perhaps a bubble burst might help. Not paying the better part of 6 for this, even though I am scheduling a viewing.  :-[

Wouldn't you have to get married first to legally be allowed to live on that street?

When you put it like that I feel like I'm considering trading in yards and lawns for shitters.

Awww Jeez.  Bairyn could be out catching some rays but then having Euro Senda leering at her and enjoying rosey from one of those balconies.  Eewww.

Here you go Bart.  The real deal.  41 acres, facing west on the Big Lake called Gitchi Gumee.   (https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/11899-M-26-Eagle-Harbor-MI-49950/106416931_zpid/)
Needs a Sauna though.  Also, make sure that snow equipment in the garage conveys - you'll need that.

I'd buy it, blast Gordon Lightfoot and burn it down to get rid of all that wood.

That's fair if you do not care for the cabin look.  Just save that woodpecker before lighting the match.

It's so beautiful!  (https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/5859-Potter-Rd-Bear-Lake-MI-49614/225518973_zpid?) In Bear Lake, Michigan which is a nice part of the state to live in.  It's got a movie theater, complete with a head that has a pisser in it.  A to die for garage with an office, flat, cleared land and a bathroom with diamond plate walls.   Not sure what more could one want?

Gorgeous, but I hate the wooden/wood themed cabinets in the kitchen although I love the kitchen itself but let's get it out of the 1988.

A bazillion acres up for sale in Patagonia.   Whose gonna take the plunge?

Patagonia’s premier ranch for sale: 64,000 acres, 12 km of Lake Viedma frontage, views of Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre—ideal for retreat, cattle, or eco-tourism (https://connectpatagonia.com/ranches-for-sale-in-patagonia/)

Nothing makes sense in that place.
- 2 builders with neither one aware of what the other is planning.
- 3 different designers consisting of 4 different genders.
- 4 drunk guys all named Larry to furnish the place.

I don't even want to see the yard and.. landscaping?

You and Vera would fill that place up!  Go for it...just don't change the flower wall over the toilet though.

I just bought this place in September and I seem to be quite happy.  I guess that cartoon nightmare could be a forever vacant rental shithole.  Could you imagine being single and taking a woman back to that place?  :o  Deemed un-fuckable based on just the kitchen alone.

The house is interesting, but I don't think you could have a nice enough house to make me want to live in Palm Springs. You'd have to be a real desert rat..

I get the itch for a place in this area every few years but then I see something like this and I get over it.
