Title: Super storm Fern
Post by: JUAN on January 23, 2026, 05:47:32 PM
@Walks_At_Night  have you panicked and bought 50 rolls of toilet paper, 20 loaves of bread, 100 cans of Vienna sausage and 50 gallons of bottles water, or will you wait until tomorrow to do it?

Bought two pounds of ground beef, two cans of Ro-Tel, a hunk of Garlic and an Onion.   Going with Rollins Chili Recipe -> https://kentrollins.com/blogs/beef/cowboy-chili.  Also have about 25 gallons of gas for the generator so I'm ready.

Last big ice storm in 2002 I think we were without power for like 8 or 9 days which sucked gopher balls.  Hope we avoid that Noid this time.

I'm well south of the ice line but I'm getting out my hurricane stuff.  Sometimes the big storms cause power interruptions even if they are far away.  Good luck.

What Rollins says about boiling in cast iron is why I use a crock pot.  I just made some with a bag of 15 bean soup thrown in.

It’s been freezing here. Trying to snow but too cold to do anything but lazily fart out powdered sugar. At least it’s not icy 🤷🏻‍♀️

Side note- ro-tel is the best!

Walks and Juan, I am really thinking of you guys in this one.  I have a friend in New Orleans and she is freaking out after just moving there from Billings.

They really should consider renaming some of these storms. Perhaps changing Fern to Fuckface..

For me it's 6AM and 63F with rain.  @Walks_At_Night probably has a very different story.

We lucked out big time.  Had some ice build up but not enough to cause massive issues.  Will be in the teens some nights this week so thank heavens.  Looks like a new round coming on Saturday though.

This is the problem with the South.  It ain't far enough South.

What happens when Tesla Full Self-Driving faces snow-covered roads with no visible lane markings? In this video, we take a 2023 Tesla Model X running FSD version 14.2.2.3 out into rare winter conditions in Dallas during “Alaska Day Two.” This drive focuses on how Tesla FSD handles snow and ice, especially when cameras can’t clearly see lane lines, road edges, or pavement texture. The system is tested across Chill, Standard, and Mad Max driving profiles, giving a real-world comparison of speed control, traction management, and comfort in poor conditions.

The headline says a Bomb Cyclone is setting its sights on North Carolina.  Then in the article, it predicts an inch of snow for Raleigh and Greensboro.  Watch out for the bomb @Walks_At_Night

Inch?  I'm seeing 8 to 12 inches.  That's ok.  Snow is doable - just don't want the ice.

That was the stupidity of the article. Unfortunately ice is what we usually get in this part of the country.

Mad Max thinks Cape Hatteras might get a foot of snow or more.  :o

I don't plan on living anywhere, where I'd need one of these . . .

Ya…if you need a snowplow to get to your marker you’re either hosed or in the mountains.

Sadly, no. Only geezers around this time of year.
