Is that a foul at 0:22-23 when the one in a white helmet uses his stick to off-balance an opponent? And what minutes are best to watch?

And what minutes are best to watch?
Right before he misses the touchdown in field double. ;D

So yeah Max Pacioretty saga has come to a conclusion. I'm sure though, as with Subban, his name will still be mentioned a lot this season on Montreal sports talk radio ;D
Here's hoping Nick Suzuki can somehow make a huge splash similar to what Victor Mete did last training camp that forced the Habs to keep him on their roster.
They need this kid to pan out. Even if he ends up needing another year in junior.
Also Tartar should get his usual 20 goals, I hope. He had a weak campaign with Vegas after he got traded there at the deadline. But he seems rared up to get things going with Montreal.
Habs open up the season on October 3rd versus the >:( damn Leafs.
Should be a dandy :o

Shelter him for the first few months then let him go to the WJHC like they did with Mete.
Worst case they will give him the 9 games before sending him back to junior.
He is in the same situation Mete was, nothing to learn in junior and too young for the AHL.

Anybody want to chime in on your other teams? Ya know when your main team is out of the playoffs completely.
1. Canucks ;D yeah I know 8)
My seconds are the Pens, Oilers and Jets in whatever order. I loathe the Knights.

The Leafs are my go to secondary team.
But, in general, I'll pull for a Canadian team if the Red Wings are out of it (which they probably are already).

Typically the Blues, Flames, Black Hawks, and the Jets as of late since I was fond of the original Winnipeg Jets.

One month to go before our minor league ECHL Hockey team's first game. It's not NHL but it IS live hockey action :)

Looks like Erik Karlsson has been traded from the Sens to the Sharks
Now this was a crazy story. Karlsoon wife was being harassed online by a teammate (Hoffman) girlfriend
Hoffman gets traded away, and also Karlssson in the same offseason

Bizarre but IDK details but likely a smart move by mgmt for possible legal and performance issues. That is like a "Slapshot" scenario, almost.
Seguin, finally, resolved. Seems like great deal for him (and his agent) and hopefully for Stars....

Have to add the Sabres to the list too.

I wonder if EllGab would have enough interested folks to create a Yahoo! NHL Fantasy League... ?
I always find it adds some spice to the NHL season when your in a Fantasy League.
I'd be interested. I also don't care what format the league would be. Points, Head to Head, Rotisserie.
Any interested people please say so. 16 days left before the season begins :D

I'm in.
I would also like to see @Spookcat join to see if her team picked based on names that sound like cats wins.
I also invite @SpookyTim, @WinWinSchrader, @DaveSchrader @DaveScottSOR and @ponyboysunset

Yeah, I know very little about hockey. The puck goes in the net while people on ice skates start fights, right?

Our local ECHL team, the Jacksonville Icemen, are minor league affiliates of the Jets. Our first game less is than a month away.

Cool. We used to have one here in Richmond but they went defunct quite a while ago. I used to love going to games. They were called the Richmond Renegades.
Being a Pens fan though, I root for the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL.

Small world. I thought the Richmond Renegades sounded familiar so I looked it up and our old hockey team, The Lizard Kings, played the Richmond Renegades in a quarterfinal playoff game back in the 1995-1996 season. I may have even seen that game if it was played at home here. It sounds familiar but 20+ years ago and so many games since then it's hard to remember a specific game.
We missed the playoffs this year with a 5th place division spot but not bad for a new team (at least new to the city). Hoping this team sticks around for a while. They seem to have better financial backing than some of the other past teams.
-
Speaking of ECHL teams. We recently have been given a team.
I haven't really paid much attention to the ECHL and always thought of it as a place where AHL rejects go to die :P
I'm sure this team will garner a lot of support though. We've had multiple AHL teams here and a junior team. But the travel between the AHL farm team and NHL big clubs seems to always be a knock against us.

I have grown to really like many of the minor league teams in various sports. We have local teams in the ECHL for hockey, the NPSL for soccer, and a minor league baseball team. The flavor of the games are a bit different from their major league counterparts but it seems the participants play with more heart and just as much enthusiasm as if they were in the major leagues. The fans who attend the games are just as engaged and excited as they are at a major league game, although in much lower numbers. Minor league games also are less expensive and give a closer view of the action on the field. I find it as much fun as a major league event.
The only major league team we have is an NFL team but I have lost much of my interest in them for various reasons. The local buzz is they are already talking Super Bowl this year for the first time ever (MUCH too early for the way they are talking as they have only played two games and a lot has yet to happen). But the local hype and some of the drama that has been going on is a turnoff.

What are the Flyers thinking? LOL! Meet their new mascot! It's name is Gritty!
The origin story of the mascot, available on the team’s website , says that “his father was a ‘bully.’” — a possible nod to the Flyers teams of the 1970s, who were known as the “Broad Street Bullies.”
It goes on to describe him as “talented but feisty, a fierce competitor.” He’s also “mischievous; the ultimate Flyers fan who loves the orange and black, but is unwelcoming to anyone who opposes his team.”

It's kind of cute and funny in its own way. I can envision the face being someone's avatar here :) I think many team mascots are made by elementary school students. Our minor league baseball team has a giant jumbo shrimp named Shrimpy for a mascot. Then again maybe it is kindergarten students making them up...

I remember a sports documentary on sports players who had suffered injuries and then became addicted to painkillers and he was one of the players they mentioned. It's great to hear of his turnaround now. Many sports players who end up addicted to painkillers deteriorate and end up dead or endure the rest of their lives in misery. It sounds like Kevin is one of the lucky few who have found the leverage necessary to create a better life from the depths of addiction. Although it is probably a daily battle, it sounds like he is winning...

Yes, you are old.
He definitely has the basics down and that intangible sense of play and at only 18, with some real game playing experience, and if he can remain grounded and focused, he could develop into a superstar. Some were critical of his selection but he deserves some significant play time to mature.
-
Crosby already bitching about Wilson. ;D

That's nuts. Just to think of what the typical 18 year old is like and then there's this kid. Was listening to NHL radio earlier today, they were comparing him to Toews.

Pretty sure the Habs would be ok if he ended up like Toews :D
Dare I say that I think he has a real good chance to be an actual elite center.
At least I am holding out that hope and so far at age 18 he's showed tremendous patience, confidence and vision.
Even though he is 6'2" and 180lbs there are times in which he does look small on the ice.
Less than 45 hours until the season begins :)
I don't think the Habs will be a very good team this season but I think they are better than what people say they are.
I suggested a EllGab NHL Fantasy Hockey pool earlier in the thread but unfortunately it seems like not enough are interested :-\

It is almost like he rises to the level of competition he plays against.
That Gallagher/Danault/Tatar line seems set and I like their chemistry early on.
So I think they'll start Drouin on with Kotkaniemi. That could become a nice duo.
These lines seem pretty decent though. I think Domi has more to give and might fit nicely where Armia is.

Ha! ;) The Pens haven't had an enforcer in a while. Oh yeah...Reaves. Just last season, and Sullivan didn't deploy him as he should've. The Pens do need some intimidators regardless of how pussy the league has become. BTW...screw Gretzky. If Lemieux started when he did and stayed healthy, he'd be the great one. :P
-

No, not really. No bad experience. I have the time. Maybe it was burnout. I've participated in fantasy sports every year for 20 years and I just became weary. It seemed like an obligation that I just didn't need. :-\
-
It is almost like he rises to the level of competition he plays
The great or just wanna-be good or improve almost always should play 'above them' or just pratice and many do in most parts of life but especially sports but in general. That is how you learn, improve, learn to deal with failure, get mentors, find faults and where to improve, motivate yourself, etc.
-
Crosby already bitching about Wilson. ;D
Because he can. That and I have a very rare signed jersey of his so I feel obligated to side with him and the pens almost every time.
-

Don't know if this is becoming a trend or not, but I know several people recently who have stopped fantasy sports after many years and it seems their interests have changed and there was no compelling reason to want to play anymore. One guy said it was like a long running TV series that completed its final season. No regrets and good memories but it had just run its course.
-
I suggested a EllGab NHL Fantasy Hockey pool earlier in the thread but unfortunately it seems like not enough are interested :-\
Played in 2 fantasy hockey leagues the past 4 years, football too. Decided this year to only do 1 football and concentrate on daily fantasy for hockey.
If anyone is interested in doing private leagues for daily fantasy let me know. Doesn't have to be big bucks, anywhere from a quarter up to $5 a game. Tournament style, 50/50, top X number of players win, etc...lots of options. I have accounts set up in Draft Kings, Fan Duel and Yahoo and can send new account referrals if needed.

20 game suspension for Wilson! Before the season even starts. That's old-time hockey in a league that wants to make the game figure skating.

Gretzky had his glory years in a league that was like figure skating mixed in with enforcers. Unlike Mario Lemieux who dealt with (in his prime) the more physical clutching and grabbing league. ;) Regardless...Wilson is a head-hunting piece of shit and I think the Caps' Cup win has you pretty ultra-confident. :D Cheers albrecht! 8) This season will be a good one. :)

It is a long season but I feel better that Caps, finally, won one. That takes some pressure off. Great season is starting. October is best month. Baseball gets serious, hockey starts, college FB going, and gets cooler. And Halloween n scary movies on etc. My teams are Caps n Stars.

Remember Marty Mcsorley?? Goon of goons at one time. His entire heads would actually turn red as smoke would billow from his ears and nostrils. He was indeed, da' man. His glory days were with the Oilers back when all they did was win, and win some more. We might need a brawl thread...…………. ;D

-
Remember Marty Mcsorley??
Oh yeah. Started off as a Pen and was traded with a couple others for a crappy washed up goaltender to help our already crappy washed up crew of goaltenders. >:(
Then years later was reacquired as a rental, then traded back again to the same team for the same player the Pens initially gave for him up, plus others.
Two things are certain. McSorley was a monster and the Penguins made some weird trades over the years.

Yes, that was so friggin awesome. Also remember a few years back when some "black guy" accidently discoverd hockey and started tweeting about it? So hilarious. As were these times. The guy that falls into the box with Tie Domi. Ouch, but could've been much, much worse!

Lyle Odelein will be at the Bell Centre Thursday night when the Canadiens honour their 1993 Stanley Cup championship team during a ceremony before their home opener against the Los Angeles Kings.
Odelein’s presence will be even more of a miracle than the 10 overtime playoff wins the Canadiens had en route to winning their last Stanley Cup.
On April 4, Odelein underwent a multi-organ transplant, replacing the aortic valve in his heart, his liver and kidneys, in a single surgery that took almost 24 hours to complete at Pittsburgh’s Allegheny General Hospital. The operation was led by Thai Ngoc, a world-renowned transplant surgeon who is also a good friend of Odelein and his wife, Laurel.

Sometimes the smallest things cause the biggest problems. I'll be staying away from cactus needles if I ever see them. Reminds me of that flesh-eating bacteria that you can get just by putting your foot in the river where the bacteria is present. It spreads rapidly and can be fatal if not treated quickly.

Our ECHL Icemen team is now 6-1-0, having won another game and also losing their first game last week. Wacey Rabbit's point streak extends to seven games, having collected points in each game played this season. Everybody here is loving the Rabbit, #20 in the photo below :D

There seems to be a trend in sports to hire younger coaches. Not sure effective that it but more relatable to players etc. Like those parents who want to be their children's "friend" not parent I suspect won't be good for discipline. Then again an an elite level the motivation in the players should be already there.

Habs and Caps tonight was a sloppy game of sorts but it was a shit ton of fun to watch.
Price made some incredible saves tonight. Ohhh babyy!!!
I am hoping he can maintain this form because with the current state of affairs on defense they'll need it ;D
Canadiens really need to get 1 if not 2 quality Dmen.
Benn and Schlemko are 6th Dmen at best and Ouellett is a 7th right now the way he's played. Ouellett is mobile but he doesn't read and react that well on the ice.
I had kind of hoped they would have given Simon Depres a longer look. It was a very small sample size of games during the preseason but I thought he brought enough tools to the table to stay in the stable of Dmen. He's 27 as well and that's when Dmen usually round into form.
I think they plan on pairing Reilly on the left side with Weber, once he returns.
Trade for a #3 or #4 Defenseman so he can play with Petry as the 2nd pair.
Then have Mete - Juulsen as the 3rd pair. They both have great upside but would benefit at this point in their careers at playing as the 3rd pairing.

Yeah right... Habs finally built up the prospect cupboard this off season so they aren't a laughing stock and they also have a few guys from previous drafts who are developing decently (Jake Evans, Josh Brook, Ryan Poehling) and now they'll blow their wad going after Panarin? Would be awesome to see him in Habs jersey but that asking price must be steep.
But Montreal was one of he final teams Panarin considered before he signed with Chicago. So who knows. It seems like Panarin really wants to be in a market where his model girlfriend has a lot of opportunities. I'm not brushed up on what Montreal would offer in that regards, but I hear Chez Parée might hire her :P

Holy mother of pearl I didn't see that one coming. Until the O's get some proper goaltending and defensemen, the song remains the same so says I.

Reilly has become Beaulieu 2.0 in the last 2 weeks but Weber may be the cure to his recent brainfarting style.

Defense looked real bad tonight versus the Devils. Too many errors and simply not getting the puck out of the zone.
You know its bad when Benn is paired with Petry on the 1st pairing.
Ouellet's decision making is brutal. I would have rather them put Alzner tonight even though the Devils are a fast team.
Maybe once Weber gets back the defense will slot into better roles and ice time. If not, weeeew it is going to be very stinky on the back end (pun intended).

Have no fear, Brett Kulak to the rescue!
;D haha Kulak played ok today.
But it doesn't take much to outshine some of the defenders the Habs are throwing out there these days.
Alzner's career looks over. I am really surprised they have not bought him out yet. It would be a tough pill to swallow after signing him to that contract, but the way he is playing right now he's not cut out for today's NHL.
It may be a long shot but I still think Simon Depres could play on the 3rd pair.

Kulak was actually pretty damn good today.
Alzner will probably be in Laval by Tuesday... unless Brian Burke gets a job before then and needs more truculence on his blueline.
I think Despres blew his chance when he wasn't willing to go to Laval.

Since we lost tonight, now 12 - 6, we went from 3rd to 5th, but for a relatively new team the Icemen are doing well. The Growlers are looking very good.
The Icemen played poorly the first period and part of the second period tonight, trailing 4 to 0 and I thought the game was over. They made a great comeback, almost tied it up at the last second of the final buzzer, and lost 4 to 5, one of the higher scoring games they played this year.
Everybody likes Wacey Rabbit here. One of the persons I went with tonight thought the plentiful signs in the stands that read "Rabbit Season" was for Wacey, but the signs were actually about it being "rabbit season", as in hunting, on the opposing team, the Swamp Rabbits :D

Perhaps. When that trade first happened it looked ok. But Saad has really become sad the past while.
He is starting to play better lately but Panarin with Kane was dynamite.
Also Panarin has supposedly said he wants to go to a city that will provide a lot of modelling opportunities for his girlfriend.
I'm not sure Chicago fits that criteria.
I do like that risky trade Chicago made the other day.
It will be interesting to see if Dylan Strome can get his shit together or is he just like his brother Ryan who also can't seem to live up to expectations.

Well Toews is having a solid offensive year. They also got Kane :D
I only seen the highlights but hey Strome got 2 pts. Now Perlini is going to get a shot with Saad and Toews.
This trade could be an absolute steal if both players live up to expectations.
Vegas are starting to play better lately.
Reilly Smith is playing better and he's a real swiss army knife type player. Pacioretty has awoke. Fleury doing his thing while grinning a mouthful of chiclets. Nate Schmidt is back and Alex Tuch is on fire.

Had 10 game per season tickets to the Stars while living in Dallas for a couple years. The NHL is absolutely my favorite of the major sports to watch in person.
I get the impression NHL fans tend to appreciate good talent regardless of what bench it’s sitting on. Saw Jaromir Jagr play in Dallas I think last year or the year before. Got a standing ovation when he scored if I recall correctly. Can’t remember what milestone that represented precisely but the dude definitely showed that experience can counter youthful exuberance in many ways.

That had to be fun to also watch Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin.
It was quite the feat of athleticism from Jagr for him to play at the level he did for so long. His work ethic and off ice conditioning was legendary.
He had his own keys to the Pittsburgh rink and other rinks of teams he played for so he could work out and skate at all hours of the day and night.
For sure, that's more often the case that fans of hockey can appreciate the talent and skill of all players.
I can even appreciate some of the Leafs players ;D even though I despise the 'team'.

Of course you were! Ever omnipresent.
That had to be fun! Do you get to do that often?
I've only seen one game at the Bell Centre. That was back in 2005 when I had a very long layover in Montreal.
The strangest thing is I cannot remember anything about the game. Just the taxi ride from the airport, walking around and marveling at how many strip clubs there appeared to be and I had a seat way up in the upper portion.
I liked it though because I had a great view of the whole ice. But I have no clue who they played or what happened. Must have been aliens.
I did get to see Michael Ryder's very first NHL game back in Oct. 2003 at the Corel Center.
They had this thing in Ottawa that if they scored 5 goals you could take your ticket to Pizza Pizza for a free slice the next day.
My brother went to school with Ryder as well and played minor hockey with him. It was pure coincidence that I'd see his first game.
I only was acquaintances with him. I was more interested in his sister ;D
I seen about 10-12 games at the Corel Center in Ottawa from October-January.
Those bus rides to the Corel Center with fans were kind of fun.

I saw a bunch of games at the Forum in 75-78. My roommate was from Philly and always needed someone to watch his back because he insisted on wearing his Flyers jersey. Hadn’t seen a game since until I went to Chicago and St Louis to watch the Hawks and Blues play back to back games.

I love winter. Summer is overrated. I despise the humidity we get in July and August.
Not sure if any development has occurred around there since 2003-04. But at the time the Corel Center was basically out in the middle of nowhere.
There were a few times just an awful smell of skunk permeated the air. I've never experienced anything like it ;D

The right claimed Pepe despite the creator not wanting anything to do with what the character had become via memes. Doubt Gritty was put out there in mind for something like that to happen. It's just people trying to make something happen of someone else's work. The NHL isn't going to align themselves or their intellectual products to the left or the right.

I think they already have aligned themselves. Think of the modern stances they have now: when it comes to animal rights, racial issues, sexual assault allegations, promoting LBGTIQ sex, cracking down on fighting and hard hits, instant replays, drinking, free speech of players, etc. It actually surprised me when they promoted a bit about the old "Broadstreet Bullies" since bullying is such a no-no now and something always criticized. ;)

NHL has been long supporting the lgblt-wxyz scene - they wouldn't have the Canadiens or Women's National programs without it. Or Sean Avery. As far as sexual assault allegations, the team and league stood by Pat Kane though his faulty accusations. Now when it comes to some piece of trash like Voynov, that's a different story. Crazy Eurotrash, what ya gonna do?
Side note, Chicago has been getting assaulted in the fartbox all season - surprisingly up on Minnesota in the 3rd right now - Gary has yet to step in.

Not a Canes fan either - always thought of them as one of the forgotten teams in the past handful of season since they've been hot garbage, but after catching a few games this years, I wouldn't mind seeing them in person.
To me, way down deep, they are still just The Whale that played their games in a Mall. Bleech.

Wonder if that is Chris Osgood's kid between the pipes over there in the Fatherland? Chip off the old block. ;)

The Blackhawks have won 5 in a row. If they add 24 games to the regular schedule they have a chance to make the wild card.

The West is a mess.
7 teams separated by 3 points for the last wild card spot.
Should be an interesting trade deadline.

@MaxPower I saw that game. Damn cool and rather funny with the who has the puck confusion before puck drop. Nice surprise for his family and somewhat heartwarming to watch on TV.

Things couldn't be worse for those Edmonton Oilers with fans throwing their jerseys onto the ice and walking out. Yikes :o

A game of inches :o That could have been very serious. The closet I have ever been to an errant puck was about 20 feet away in the stands. It had ricocheted a couple of times before going over the barrier taking away some of the energy but it still made a mean thud when it hit an empty seat.

Why can't anything just be about sports or the game? Why now do they make the players put rainbow tape on their sticks and have the announcers talk about BLTQI Pride and "game for all" or some crap? Even Obama's own CDC said that roughly 7% of the country "identified" as GLBT. Now that was a decade ago, and there could be some under-reporting, but even IF all the Hollywood propaganda and public education has worked since then it likely has approached even an appreciable minority in the total country's population. So why is every sport, movie, tv show, and school class all about the "pride,", inclusive, and BLTQIG stuff? Even if one ignored the social agenda or desire to stop bullying, or whatever they claim, as a business what is the purpose to promote a sport to an audience that is 1) small and 2) likely doesn't play and not interested in hockey (at least that much?) If QBLTIs want to be seen as "normal," or whatever, and just "a part of society" than stop pushing your agenda and just enjoy sports without the politics or propaganda. Therein ends the rant.
