Title: Whatever: The Open Lines Thread
Post by: TigerLily on December 15, 2018, 05:19:39 PM
I'm hoping this thread develops into sort of a wine bar, coffeehouse, discussion site. A place with no agenda. We can hangout and discuss and meander anywhere we want.  All topics covered in any other thread or totally new thoughts and ideas. Like friends who run into each other and just catch up on anything and everything. Gossip, questions, experiences. Art, Science, the Paranormal, the Normal. Your day. Deep philosophy to giggling at the absurd. And being absurd ourselves. Grab your favorite beverage. Settle into a comfy chair and chat. About whatever

Any thoughts? Good idea? Bad idea? Stupid idea? Waddaya guys think? I'll check back later to see if there is any interest

Mrs. Walks_At_Night and I went out to dinner tonight,  We had a nice chat while waiting for our meal.  There were two ladies about our age that sat behind us and they did the same.   There was an older couple near us and they also appeared to have a nice conversation together.   Then a young, early 20's couple, apparently on a date, sat at the table next to us.   After ordering, they just sat there monkeying around on their cell phones and didn't interact with one another at all.  Seems unhealthy to me but maybe I'm just turning into a grumpy, old, get off my lawn kind of a dude?

No. There's definitely something wrong with post millenials.

It's also a basic lack of manners. If you are engaged in a face to face conversation, that takes precedent over a text or phone call, barring an actual emergency.

It was rather weird.

They seemed comfortable enough around one another so as to indicate it wasn't a first date and even if it was, there wasn't enough time for it to head South.

He was naughty today.   I was doing some drywall repairs in the house today and he got into my drywall mud.  The Mrs. had to wrangle him and give him a bath.   :D

Yep, and it's completely unnatural to sit across from someone, anyone and not speak let alone being buried into their little gadgets. Flat out weird.

While we're on dinner outings what does everybody tip? We're usually at the 20% mark when things are good but it infuriates me that they all tip out at the end of the night and share the wealth. It's pure fucking socialism. We actually had to force (I think her name was Erin) to accept a cash tip handed to her under the table last night and even then she was slightly uncomfortable about it. And that in itself pisses me off that she has become so socially conditioned to dole out to others what SHE deserved and earned!

Too much?

/Rant

You said it yourself Walks.  They were a young couple in their early twenties.  Us older folk shouldn't get mad at them.  Let them have their time in the sun.  They will probabley change in time.  Ageing does that, sadly.

I'm a 20% dude as well if everything is fine.   I admire your attempt to fight the madness.

I agree with you on the tips thing. I waitressed in college and it pissed me off to have to share my tips with other waitresses who were rude to the customers or who were new and sucked. I left one job at an Italian restaurant I worked at because I had to share the tips with the owner and she only picked up a few tables at the beginning of the evening and at the end. I busted my ass the rest of the night.

Oh I suppose so Rixx.  I see something similar at work with the young Engineers.   As soon as they hit a snag, they look the issue up on Google and usually have a solution right away and just move on.  Efficient?  You bet! Of course the issue is when the Googler doesn't spit out a solution.  Then some of the other gray hairs or myself get a visit as they are stuck.  What happens thirty years from now when everyone is looking for answers from the beast and no one is feeding them into it?

Millennials and phones: While reading these posts, I got a mental picture of a few Ellgabbers sitting at the table with some of the Uninitiated. They were posting and chatting with us while their live companions looked on and fumed

Morg  sounds like such a character and so smart! I have mentioned this before but I once saw a doc on PBS about crows. Absolutely fascinating. Their mental acuity and ability to logic out resolutions to puzzles was off the charts. They beat every other kinds of animals including chimps (but excepting humans, I assume). The documentary was either Nature of NOVA, I believe. I'm a cat person but I once read a book where the protagonist got a raven companion. Ever since then I have wanted a raven. But never with 3 cats in the house

Tips: I tip 20% as a matter of form. I go out a lot with girlfriends and have been told that waitpersons  consider a gaggle of females as notoriously bad tippers. The younger the worse.  A friend educated me when we were still in high school, if the service is horrible tip a penny so the person knows you didn't forget but just didn't think the service was worth any more

I'm glad this seems to have gotten off to a good start. Nice exchanging thoughts with people I don't run into often enough. Have a nice evening, all

^^;;;;; Okay, I openly admit, I'm reading this on my tablet across the casual restaurant table from my husband who's playing his portable game.
For us, going out is more of a chance to just escape the solitary walls of our apartment. We can be among people with limited interaction so no fears of language or guest etiquette mistakes.
Just to note, it's greatly different when we're out with other people.

I knew it! Someone out there would be posting on Ellgab and reading about e-etiquette while ignoring a real human. Little did I know it would be my Favorite Cat.  Thank you, Spookcat. You gave me a good chuckle on this one 😸

Now, I don't ignore him...most of the time. ;) Usually we actually end up kind of using the things on our devises as more conversation starters. "Oh I saw this today." "Oh I read about such-and-such". Sometimes we'll both find something interesting and just exchange tablets then talk about it. I'll especially do that with family stuff because I'm the one with social media. "Oh your aunt wanted you to see this" sort of stuff.
Usually he has no interest in gab-related things, except I haven't been able to resist showing him a bunch of things that make me laugh, especially Bluejays creations. :)

Hi, TL. I'm like you--I like the lived-in look.

OCD must really be a pain, especially in this disordered existence. Not as bad as fear of clowns or palindromes tho, I imagine.

I agree. I prefer to get my news on line where I can read as much as I want and not have to settle for a sound bite.

We did a cross country camping trip this past summer. We generally camp in Federal Forest campgrounds which are almost always miles away from cell coverage and have very little TV coverage. Even with cell booster, service was limited most places. Whenever we stopped to eat, we both would hop on our phones to catch up with the world. I wonder how many tisk, tisked over the older couple more engaged in their phones than each other.

You are right.  I want to tip. I want to let my server or another stand out know that they did an exceptional job.  Why would I want  part of my tip going to the sommelier?  If I picked the wine for my dinner? The server should be the one receiving my tip.  IF, my server has been assisted in an able manner by some member of her team, then I will leave it to her discretion if she wants to share.

When I figure my tip, I don't include the bottle of wine unless the Sommelier has assisted me in choosing.  And in my book, that means bring me a taste of the wine suggested if there is a bottle opened or something that is similar in profile to what he is suggesting.  You want me to remember you with a tip?  Stand the fuck out!

TL, I had a girlfriend who was a wait person.  She had been trained at a higher end restaurant by a long experienced waiter.  He had instructed her that in tipping, if the customer had shitty service they would put a few pennies on the table.  If it had been the service that everyone craves, a good wait person would find the appropriate tip and small amount of change stacked on the receipt plate.  8 cents, 13 cents, stacked neatly.  This was to communicate that the wait person had given that service and the recipient wanted to show that they had taken the time to acknowledge them, by tipping appropriately and stacking neatly, a small odd sum.  Kinda like a golf clap.

My girlfriend at the time thought that she was getting her leg pulled.  Until she did get one of those tips....and a small stack of coin. I believed her.  Of course, she told me that she loved me, too.

I don't agree with this mandatory tipping bullshit in bars and restaurants.
It's a scam by restaurant owners to financially support the underpaid employees.
If I tip it's only 10%, max.
Those who brag that they tip 20% or more are naive fools being taken for a ride.

Agreed. Fairly pay the employees like any other employee in the service sector. Either they are polite and can do their job or they can't.  Keeping a tipping system in place just enables the restaurant owners to continue to be cheap bastards.

On the 20% though, until there is a change in the larger system, this could be kind of bad if it were seen as naive, to staff they depend on that for survival.

I don't agree with this mandatory tipping bullshit in bars and restaurants.
It's a scam by restaurant owners to financially support the underpaid employees.
If I tip it's only 10%, max.
Those who brag that they tip 20% or more are naive fools being taken for a ride.

Tipping is considered a sign of bad service in Japan. Of course, they actually pay their workers... Is it still done in America that most food places pay the waiters like $4 and expect them to make up the rest with tips?

Why do they tip if the service was bad. Strange.

Not quite that bad but yeah. A strange system but, in many cases, waiting tables is a side-job, entry level, student job, or a temporary thing (in theory) whereas in some other countries it is an actual job/career even and you can find the same waiters for years at a place and they really know the food, wine, location, etc.

Well tipping is a rare thing. Quality service is highly valued here. You don't really last long in the job if you are not meeting those standards. It also leads more to a "what do I do with this" reaction.

First off all, doofus. Nobody's "bragging" about how much they tip. If the service is crap and the food even worse we'll send it back, not pay a thing (unless we had drinks) and leave and possibly never go back. If my wife had her way she'd tip more than 20% for great service but she's insane.  not really..    :-\

I like this idea greatly, thank you

Too much?

/Rant

No. Not too much. I agree.

It all depends on the nature of the dysfunction, but I'm a big fan of non-defensive communication. Also being able and willing to leave if things are truly intolerable.

Of course, there always is the option of bailing in favor of a vacation elsewhere. Let 'em bicker while you sip a mai tai. 8)

Hey Zen! Great to see you! Speaking of OCD, I have a friend who has to straighten out Every. Single. Fringe. on his persian carpet. I'm sure my own housekeeping skills must make him a little (more) nuts

I was at the home of a friend who had an OCD husband.  Found out when I everso slightly moved a couple refrigerator magnets to see the photos that were in the little frames. He came along and asked aloud who had moved the magnets! I said it was me and he fixed them. I decided to test him. When they were elsewhere i just tapped a picture frame in the living room that was on the wall. Just a hair crooked. He came in and we began chatting, he was pacing and talking and then without missing a beat he straightened the frame.
Granted, the house was spottless and neat, but I don't know how living with that would be.

Ahhh I probably can’t help, but i can give you a good description that might help you put yours on a descriptive level of shite.

Let’s start with the fact that my parents didn’t celebrate Christmas in any way shape or form, due to some ridiculous religious beliefs.

My formative years were spent being segregated from kids at school who did Christmas festivities and not doing anything special during the festive season. No present giving at school, no church services, no nativity plays, no carol singing, no christmas fairs... you get the idea.

I never really formed any Christmas traditions that most people have, and in fact I never decorated a Christmas tree until I was married and properly living with my husband.

My remaining siblings now celebrate, as does my mother (she has drifted away from the hokey religion). The act of giving presents is nice, and the season itself is nice now I can participate, but it’s how I imagine moving to a country that has a seasonal event you are sort of adopted into. I do it but don’t understand the sense memories that I think most people have.

Two of my siblings no longer talk to two of my other siblings. They really hate one another. I talk to everyone. There’s a Venn diagram which is used for who goes where, and when - my mother is shared around like the child of a divorced couple.

This year we have Christmas with one sister, then Boxing Day to relax and then my other sibling and my mum for the day after Boxing Day.

I generally buy a bottle of Baileys and get absolutely pissed and just try and survive. Strangely enough it’s the only day of the year I actually want to drink heavily. I barely drink the rest of the year.

Oh add to that the fact that Marital Unit’s mum died a few years ago on Christmas Day which means it’s always a bit of a sombre affair.

So I spose the answer to your question: Drink.

How distressing and unfortunate, yet fascinating in a dysfunctional way.  Are you used as some sort ambassador involved in shuttle diplomacy between the two factions or is it a total Cold War kind of deal with no contact at all?  Any attempts to entice you into one Venn bubble or the other?

There is no contact or talk between the two factions, any talk about the other faction is met with tantrums. No attempts made to draw into one side or another, and I don’t take kindly to attempts as they have found out. Last time they were in the same room was my dad’s funeral and there was no speaking to one another then either.

Prior to that was the hospital when my dad died, I was there with my mum and two sisters, the other sister turned up when I had rung and he had passed and she refused to come into the room until my other two sisters had left.

It’s childish and ridiculous. I leave them to it at this point. Life is too short to be like this to one another, but they are all as stubborn as me so it’s no wonder we have this impasse.

I have no advise. I am a very lucky person in this life. I had my troubles in this life. However, my Christmas holidays are wonderful. You had an interesting childhood. Every person has their own story of life. I am sad to learn that you did not have the magic of Christmas growing up. Religions has done so much harm to so many people. With that being said. I grew up with the magic of Christmas. My family and friends will stop over Christmas Eve. Food, gifts, drinks and church are on my list. Christmas morning at my home, again more family, gifts and breakfast. Christmas Dinner at my brother’s home. Lots of meat, drinks, gifts and fun. Christmas night, back to my home…more family, gifts, food and drinks. Maybe some live music will be played in my kitchen. Late Christmas night, a visit to Cousin Joe’s home to visit with more friends/family.
December 26th—sleeping most of the day. This year, for a change I have a cute small live tree. I am trying to make this Christmas less crazy. Wish you and yours a Christmas that has some magic in it.

It is childish.  People can be amazing in their pettiness at times.  I'm sorry that things are that way for you.  Seems as if you have taken the best possible course.

My Father was number 13 of 14 in a family raised during the Great Depression with a womanizing, alcoholic for a Father.  I never did understand all the Entente's, Alliance's and Sphere's of Influence in that mess.  I'm not sure that old Bismarck himself could have navigated in that multi-polar microcosm of the Congress of Vienna.  The Old Man took the sensible course and just did his own thing, which seems like what you are doing.

"The Season's Upon Us". Fun video that captures some of the Christmas Holiday and the craziness. At this point in time, in my home, things never get too crazy, since we have small children standing by and watching the adults. We try to keep Christmas as a day of magic. However, at cousin Joe's home things get very crazy. It is the end of a long day and now most of us are drunk. One Christmas night gathering at cousin Joe's, my young nephew got stinking drunk at the kitchen table. Around 5:30 am, he started to vomit. Due to his inexperience, he did not run to the bathroom. He vomited on top of the dog's head. The dog, Sofia was shocked. Sofia started to run around the kitchen and shaking the vomit off her head and body. Everyone in the room was hit by the flying vomit. We all started running away from Sofia and the vomit.  End of this true story.

The only sensible course is to do your own thing. Rise up over the sorrows in life. My father was #9 of 10 children. Also raised during the depression era. He came from a humble family with strong family ties. He has passed over. However, his great love for his family lives on. He has 2 great grand children names after him. My nephew used to get very car sick, he was about 7 or 8 on a rather long car ride and thought he was going to be sick. Suffice to say he got a physics 101 about velocity of liquids out the window of a moving vehicle and learnt quickly which way to face.....

On, I can only imagine this learning of physics 101. One more vomit rule. Do not vomit into your brother's coat pocket. As children, my brothers and I were visiting an elderly couple who had given us stale candy. My younger brother started to vomit and did not know where the bathroom was. So he open our brother's coat pocket and vomited the stale candy into the pocket.  It turned out to be a bad move.

Wondering if anyone has watched the British documentary television series "History Cold Case"?  In one of the episodes the team seek to put a name and face to a 19th-century female found in a pauper's grave in Cross Bones, London. Cross Bones is a disused post-medieval burial ground. This TV series only lasted 2 years. "SAD". I watch it on youtube and each episode does not disappoint.

Oh wow.  That really puts things in perspective.  :-\. My heart goes out to you.

Your welcome. Thanks for putting up this subject. I love this song, too.  I also love Pee Wee Herman. However, I can only watch his shows/movies so many time. Over in the Drama subject, it seems that the facebook banned one is letting his stream off over there. It has the Pee Wee Herman feel to it.
Pee-wee: I know you are but what am I?
Francis: You're a nerd!
Pee-wee: I know you are but what am I?
Francis: You're an idiot!
Pee-wee: I know you are but what am I?

Someone I knew had a tape of the HBO Peewee Herman Show. Genius hilarity! I found it on YouTube and was going to post it here for the Uninitiated but it's in 4 parts and don't have time. Worth the lookup for anyone interested

I vividly remember seeing Pee Wee's Big Adventure in the theater in 1985. Earlier in the day I bought an oversized toothbrush, knowing I was going to see the Pee Wee movie later in the evening. The whole day was fun and the movie was the icing on the cake. After the movie a local celebrity known for a particular gameshow got into a thing with either a parking attendant or a valet over some kind of parking dispute at this lot/garage and was causing a scene.

The movie is excellent and is still one of my all time favorites. I'm not even much of a Tim Burton fan but I think that movie was pure gold. Burton is actually in the movie, when PeeWee is depressed and in the pouring rain, the lead thug who speaks is actually Tim Burton who PeeWee gives a HISS to.

Awesome movie though... The characters all around, the scenery, Dottie², and the cameos by several people like Cassandra Peterson. I think anything with Elizabeth Daily was good. She pops up in several really fun and mega cool 80s movies, sometimes with her band (IE: Better Off Dead, which is an A+ comedy and also from 1985).

1985 spawned a ton of good movies and albums. Good year for metal axes too, especially Ibanez. Attached is one my Prolines. Not the most collectible, but fun and was made in 1985. Picture is total shit. It is more of a Pepto Bismal color in real life. My 2nd pink 1660 but currently my only pink one. I think I have 13 Ibanez axes that were built in 1985. I don't really like playing newer guitars and I prefer them pointy. I collect Japanese Destroyers and Vs of the 70s and 80s and over a dozen of them have 1985 serials. Which reminds me... Cereal... in 1985 cereal was also really good but I don't do that anymore, I don't even drink Coke/Pepsi or anything related. New Coke was a bunch of horseshit too. Rememeber that? That stunt might have been 1985 too, if not it was 1984.

We all do it to a certain extent. Just tweaking your whiskers  ;)

Well, late to the party, but finally wandering over here. What a great idea, @TigerLily , thanks for starting this thread! I'm so happy to see gabbers who don't post in the HW or Dave threads much, too! Excellent!

I confess we go out to dinner a lot, and usually it's the first time we get a chance to check on the political newsletter we both like (then discuss the day's updates), check the guests for MITD, marital unit checks the bird list upates, and I sometimes briefly check Ellgab. But mostly we talk, and often end up chatting with people around us if the setting is right. Nice!

BTW I am NOT going to discuss politics at all, just mentioned that I like a particular newsletter, that's all.  8)

As for your Fire, can't you turn off the AI feature that suggests things to you?

Cheers!  ;)

Dysfunctional siblings, awkward parents. Sibling invited g/f’s niece and niece’s b/f as a condition of them attending.   ::)

Breathe. Don't take any of it too seriously, none of it really matters anyway. Let it roll like water off a duck's back. You can be Teflon man. Focus on things you like or that make you feel happy.

And a good drink or two or a toke might not hurt either <g>.

I've never heard of Japanese cheesecake. But I do like Japanese food and cheesecake so this is something maybe I should look into

The Japanese do cheesecake beautifully. They have such an attention to detail, if they do another country's cuisine, it's perfect. There's a restaurant in NYC which is 100% Japanese owned and staffed, and the cuisine is all Italian... but refined, perfect, blissful elegant Italian. Amazing!  :)

Oh add to that the fact that Marital Unit’s mum died a few years ago on Christmas Day which means it’s always a bit of a sombre affair.

So I spose the answer to your question: Drink.

That's a tough one to get over, @DynamoHum, but in time it will ease.

Years back my beloved father had a sudden heart attack and died on a Monday and was buried two days later on Wednesday, my birthday. I was in my 20's then. Our family doctor, who treated him and all of us and was a close family friend, came over to the house after the funeral (which he was at) where we were receiving people (my dad was active in the community and very well-liked) with a bouquet of red roses and a small birthday cake with a candle on it. He lit the candle and said, "Someday you will be able to remember that this is your birthday, too, and one day you will be able to claim it back as your day." It was amazing.

And you know what? That was many years ago, and he was absolutely right. There have even been a couple of years when I didn't even think about my Dad's funeral on my birthday, and that was a good thing. I bless our doctor/friend (now long gone himself) for that incredibly sensitive and wise act of kindness to me on that horribly sad day. It was an amazing gift beyond words.

May your Marital Unit be able to reclaim Christmas, enjoy the day, and let go the sadness in time.

You're most welcome, Dynamo. Sometimes it takes time. Today is my nephew's birthday, the one who committed suicide four years ago in March. I feel quite sad and reflective about him, and for some reason images of him as a toddler keep popping up unexpectedly in my mind, as I was very close to him when he was younger.

Truth is, he's probably happier over there (wherever "there" is), on the other side than he was here. Each year gets a little less hard, and soon I expect the measurement will switch over to gradually getting easier.

So sorry to hear of your nephew’s death. Memories of him as a toddler must be bitter sweet. Suicide leaves the loved one with so many questions. With the Christmas Season upon us, I think back on those who are no longer on this earth. I believe in “life after death” and that universe is a better place than here.

I like how the site self-describes as "addictive." Are people waiting for a Edgar Cacey/Ed Dames/SDM eruption on the Canaries causing an Earth shattering tidal wave or Atlantis to re-arise? Why is this site addicting? Simply because people miss how you used to be able to watch planes land and often airports would even have a coffee/cocktail bar where one could watch?

Are there some bankers on the "Lipstick" funneling assets into more secretive banks now that the Swiss have sold-out, to an extent?

Some folks have odd hobbies. I recall some years ago the Italians arresting some Brits who were taking photos and great interest in planes. They didn't get that some British types like to count trains and planes as a hobby.

"Cinderella" in Norwegian becomes Askepott, which takes the romance out of it a little.

Only about 400 or so watching the Lanzarote Airport live stream.  An Edelweiss Air "Lipstick" will be landing in about 20 minutes.  The Chatroom will be stoked!    ;)

The winter solstice falls on Dec. 21, 2018. The winter solstice is particularly special this year as the upcoming December full moon, named the Cold Moon, will be visible in the night sky along with the Ursid meteor shower.

I love this, and also your previous post about the solstice rituals around the world, @TigerLily! I was at a solstice celebration tonight which was absolutely beautiful, with many blessings and invocations for a better, happier, more balanced new year.

Blessed Solstice to you, and we all need to keep ourselves in balance around this very intense full moon, too! Intense emotions possible! +1

I don't know what lame but well-intentioned thoughts from an internet stranger like may mean to you, if anything, but sincere well wishes to you and your family during this and all seasons. Take care

Yokohama is a very pretty city, especially around the harbor. I was a bit sad that it was too smoggy so we couldn't see Mt. Fuji, but I still enjoyed it.

Hey, @Spookcat . Just as I was replying to this post last night, the lights went out. Literally!  Lost electricity and internet for several hours. But I'm back!  Here's what I was replying:

Interesting coincidence. San Diego and Yokohama are sister cities. Their Japanese Friendship Garden is in Balboa Park. One of my favorite little spots. Here is a site with lots of very pretty photos of the Garden. A long url but hopefully you'll think it's worth the copy and paste

Wow, @twistedlogic, that looks exactly like what I like to do! In fact when I got home from dinner tonight, one of my doggies, Jackson, went tearing into the bedroom, jumped up on the bed (it's set purposely low on the floor) and started gleefully rolling around, flipping this way and that, twisting and turning on his back. He totally wrecked the covers, messed up the pillows, got fur on the blanket, and slobbered on me when I got down to pounce on him. It was quite the debacle, and we both had the best time! <g>

Stuff and nonsense:

1) The dog in the video is basically my puppy, but thankfully mine is only 13 pounds.

2) They're rebooting 90210 with some of the original cast. This Gen X'er who never missed an episode is pleased to no end.

3) Some bush league Red Sox writer is voting against Mariano Rivera for the Hall of Fame. (ETA: Turns out he's abstaining which is better but still ridiculous.)

4) Capybaras are wonderful. Capybaras crammed into a hot tub with fruit are exponentially wonderful.

5) We've had trouble finding non-light, non-weird-flavored egg nog around here the past few years. Hopefully, things will go better tomorrow. I REQUIRE NOG.

Purple is one of my favorite colors. It started as a joke because Bart would tease me for once having purple hair. And it grew to me saying that "one day I will earn purple boxes". And then, I did get them :)

Well if it works for you then I say AWSOME  :)

Bart, I'd like a 1966 Chevy Chevelle that's been restored and modified. It doesn't have to be the SS model; Malibu will do just fine since it'll be a resto-mod anyway. You are sooo magnanimous in giving ppl what they really need, why don't you hook me up with that? It can even be purple, though I must admit that I'd paint it maroon.

Come on, big guy, what do you say?

Hello Ellflings! Anybody miss me? Even a little?  :'(

My evil electronic qi has been in overdrive. I somehow killed my new Fire after only having it for two weeks. Tried everything to get it working again even with Tech Support but no luck. Finally ordered a replacement which should ship out tomorrow. While preparing my dead one for return shipping I decided, for some reason, to plug it in. Started working immediately. After sitting for weeks. WTF??? I guess now I will have to deal with a "never mind" re-shipping.

I have been slow death to electrical/electronic gadgets since I can remember. This summer I killed my new desk fan. This week I killed my space heater but a friend was able to resuscitate it. I have a drawer full of broken watches. I don't think I have had a computer of any type last more than three years. My original Fire was one of my longest lasting computers. Anybody else have to deal with this?  If only my powers could be used for good instead of evil, the world might be a better place.

Oh well, I'm glad to be back. I have been here every day to click ads and pick up messages. But had to use my laptop. Which I hate using. It gives me headaches. Which is another weird issue. Hope everyone is enjoying the new year. Love

Mandalas are so beautiful. I know they are used for prayers and meditation. But I also thought sand mandalas were "uncreated" a very short time after being completed. To convey the principles of impermanence and non-attachment. Did you ever see the movie Little Buddha? A sand mandala is uncreated at the very end of the movie. Very symbolic. I've always been drawn to Tibetan Buddhism and studied it and incorporated its principles into my philosophy in my own usual haphazard way

Welcome back.  The Fire is not my favorite -I totally believe you!  i'm not sure about ordering online, but if electronics break a lot, I would shop at nearby stores with really good return policies and save packaging and receipts for 90 days!  Out here, one department store had a 6-month return policy forever!  If you lose a receipt, just replace the same product and then put the broken one in the vox with the receipt and return it.  If the employee accepts the return, you have been diligent enough, no harm done.  That's just my theory.

I wonder why the laptop gives headaches? Thank God for tablets!  I wonder if a mere Chromebook would give you headaches.  Chromebook s have abbreviated kevoards, though, and the backspace button is a stretch.

I used to have a cat that looked like your avatar.  He was a great cat.

Love

I missed you, TL! What paranormal energies are surrounding you that's killing off your electronics?
My sympathy on your headaches :( I used to get them but now I wear glasses when using computers and occasionally reading, my vision is fine without them, but it's stopped the headaches.

I have heard of such a thing, but it was before tablets. He couldn't keep a watch going at all. Make sure your tablet holds a charge before calling off the replacement!

Not yuzu or porn lol. Mikans, or what we'd call mandarin oranges.  :)

I love mandarin oranges. But I don't wear them.  You can tell they are Japanese cats. The way the black and white kitteh was politely waiting his turn out of sight until the orange kitteh was done. Some day I should tell you about the completely different experiences I had waiting in lines in Japan versus China. Have you visited China since you've been there? Like two different universes. The best thing about China was how much cheaper it was than Japan. Everything else I would give Japan the definite edge

No, I haven't been to China. I was invited by a friend to go to South Korea once, but turned it down because Mr. couldn't go. I'm really hoping that we can visit New Zealand before going back to the states.

I would love to go to New Zealand. Of all the places in that part of the world, that is where I would most want to go. I hope you guys get there. Hike a North Island waterfall for me. There and Japan. If I had an unlimited budget or travelling on someone else's yen. Oh yeah and Bali

I've recently tried Maybelline "super stay matte ink liquid lipstick". Absolutely love it. It stayed on through two greasy meals (pasta and curry) and after nine hours, it was only a bit patchy towards the inside.

Maybe if you took better care of your lawns and floors your lipstick wouldn't have become "patchy" by the end of the day. Hmm? Only way you'll learn.

I asked my eye doctor what mascara she would recommend, she said Blinc Mascara. It forms little tubes around each lash. All you need to remove them is warm water, they just slide off.

While looking for a cool cat pick for @Spookcat 's medal I upon this story

Cry “Havoc!” and Let Slip the Cats of War
In more recent times, cats and dogs have been banned from Naval vessels, but they are still valuable on land. In 2004, a tiny Egyptian Mau kitten wandered into U.S. Army headquarters in Iraq. Dubbed PFC [Private First Class] Hammer, he became a ratter, morale booster, and important stress reliever to the soldiers. When the battalion was set to ship back to Colorado, Staff Sgt. Rick Bousfield contacted Alley Cat Allies and Military Mascots for help in getting PFC Hammer back to the States. PFC Hammer was vetted and quarantined before traveling to Colorado Springs, where he took up permanent residence with Staff Sgt. Bousfield. When Hammer was being carried to Bousfield, he heard Rick’s voice and began purring and kneading the arm of the transporter. As it turns out, he remembered his Army buddy after all.

USA Today adds this:

When Bousfield found out his unit was leaving Iraq in March, he decided he couldn’t leave a member of his team behind.

“He has been through mortar attacks,” said Bousfield, a 19-year Army veteran. “He’d jump and get scared liked the rest of us. He is kind of like one of our own.”

Pfc. Hammer got his name from the unit that adopted him, Team Hammer. Soldiers would tuck Hammer in their body armor during artillery attacks, and in return, Hammer chased mice in the mess hall.

“He was a stress therapist,” Bousfield said. “The guys would come back in tired and stressed. Hammer would come back and bug the heck out of you. He wiped away some worries.”

The kitten earned his rank after nabbing five mice.

This reminded me of Operation Baghdad Pups. They have helped bring many dogs and cats, befriended by US military personnel while on deployment, back to the US instead of being abandoned.

"Oooh, TigerLily!" I hear you say, " tell us moar! " OK. If you insist

Did you know about 70% of the cats depicted in ancient Egyptian tombs and arts were tuxedo cats? Yep, Tuxies were the most commonly depicted (and worshipped) cats in ancient Egypt.

It takes most cats one to two weeks to open their eyes after birth. But newborn Tuxies? They open their eyes a whole 24 hours before any other kind of cat.
This may be somewhat difficult to prove, but many people believe tuxedo cats are up to 200% smarter than other kinds of cats. It's unclear whether or not this is the sole opinion of tuxedo cat parents

Tuxedos have magic. It's said that during a vernal or diurnal equinox, tuxedo cats become virtually invisible due to the colors of their coats. Completely disregarding the physics of light and shadow

"Oooh!" The crowd claps with glee. "You are a font of amazing knowledge! Moar, TL. Moar!" Sorry. But I have to blow my nose and hack up some phlegm. And probably clean a litter box.  Read for yourselves. I'm not your personal Siri, you know

I grew up with a tuxedo cat.  She seemed very smart.  She never messed in the house, for like 12 years, even though we didn't have a litter box or pet door.  She just found ways in and out, and knew which people came and went at which times, & timed her releases accordingly.  One time, much to my parents' shame, she was stuck in a shut bedroom for something like a week or two while we were on vacation.  She had no water or food.  She survived.  I never saw her kill a bird, but she must have hunted eggs because one time a crow bopped her on the head.

We love Mom, but her boyfriends are trash:

https://www.briansussman.com/commentary/earth-days-real-history/
“Earth Day has never been a celebration of the beauty and bounty of this awesome terrestrial ball.  It’s always been an assault on man.”–Brian Sussman

On April 22, 1970, a trio of radical dreamers established the first Earth Day, an event designed to assault capitalism, free-markets and mankind.

The initial concept was conceived by Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-WS).  Nelson was Congress’ leading environmentalist activist, a sort of pre-incarnate Senator Barbara Boxer in drag.  He was also the mastermind behind those ridiculous teach-ins which were vogue in the Sixties and early Seventies.  During the teach-ins, mutinous school instructors would scrap the day’s assigned curriculum, pressure their students to sit cross-legged on the floor, and “rap” about how America was an imperialist nation, and converse about why communism really wasn’t such a bad form of government—it just needed to be implemented properly.

Nelson’s teach-in efforts were aided by a young man named Denis Hayes.  Hayes was student body president while at Stanford, and well known for organizing anti-Vietnam war protests.  Hayes heard about Senator Nelson’s teach-in concept and eventually helped Nelson institute the practice nationwide.

Rounding out the troika was Professor Paul Ehrlich of Stanford.  In 1968 Ehrlich authored the Malthusian missive, The Population Bomb, in which he infamously spouted wild allegations which included equating the earth’s supposed surplus of people with a cancer that needs to be eradicated:  “A cancer is an uncontrolled multiplication of cells; the population explosion is an uncontrolled multiplication of people…We must shift our efforts from treatment of the symptoms to the cutting out of the cancer.  The operation will demand many apparently brutal and heartless decisions,” he wrote.

Oh yeah...I remember his tome all too well from back in the day, scary stuff, no?
