Was John Lear the one who was trying to raise funds so that somebody would pay for it a new air conditioning system for his house that he later put on the market? (Basically begging for money to make even more by selling his house.)

Yes. It was also Lear who claimed there was a soul harvesting device on the moon.  He was a major loon.

My favorite Lear interview was by a short-lived C2C rent-a-host who played Lear like a trout, basically made him look foolish.  I don't remember his name, but he never did another C2C show.
