I'll be caught in Colorado every now and then when they enforce the chain laws but I just shut down until the ban is lifted.

Makes perfect sense to me. Are most able to do that or would it depend on the company they work for or the particular load type?

I mostly haul meat or candy over the mountains, so that grants me leeway. An owner-operator or someone who lives in the area may feel a bit of pressure.
The truth is that I've been out here about eleven years now and I have never been faulted for an accident and so these companies need a few drivers like me to offset those that are real good runners, but burning up their license.
A speeding ticket and a few overweights are all that I have on my record(they may have been removed by now) - so I can go anywhere to work - and my company knows it - so they leave me to my own judgement.

That’s good. Just had a friend of mine become a long haul trucker. I assume that’s the correct term. He’s gone for the week and generally home on the weekends. Usually leaving Sunday night.

Yeah, long haul or over-the-road - same difference.
It's any driver who doesn't go home every night.
Long haul usually gets paid by the mile and local drivers get paid by the hour.

He drove 5 or 6 car haulers for a few years north east and decided to hit the road going anywhere and every where. I must say that I envy you guys sometimes. It’s got to be great seeing the country like that. I have spells where I travel for work but nothing like this. Sitting in the office bores the shit out of me. I had to ask about how showering went. He told me that surprisingly a lot of truck stops have showers/private bathrooms that are really nice and better than some hotels. Sent a few pics and I was amazed.

Yeah the contrast between the irrigated land and the desert, the scablands, and coolies, and the mountains, the almost desert and the Palouse, etc.

Spring and summer are nice but fall brings melancholy and loathing of winter. I'm a bit of a loner so the job suits me well.
Yeah, the showers are nice but usually I end up having to shut down at customers. I always have a jug of water sat aside and filled with a little body wash so I can clean up anywhere - it's not perfect - but it beats going to bed filthy.
