In 1986 I spent 6 months traveling around Asia - 4.5 months in China, and a week or two each in Tibet, Nepal, India, Thailand, and British Hong Kong.

I recently scanned my slides, I plan to post a few more - especially Tibet

Looking forward to those

Flying from Chengdu, Szechwan, China to Lhasa Tibet over the eastern Himalayas in a plastic Soviet plane from the 1960s

Is that 24,790 foot Minya Konka (Gongga Shan)?

Couple more.  I'm surprised I was allowed to take these from the plane

The Jokhang Temple on the town square.  Pilgrims from all over Tibet end their journey here, prostrating themselves circling it multiple times.  The huge jars are burning incense.

Vendors take their places along the path around the Jokhang.  Yak meat, yak cheese

Cool pics, PB!! :D

Thanks.  I'll post some more later.  Here are more pilgrims from rural Tibet in Lhasa.  I think other Tibetans would know where they were from by their clothes, as I saw recurring colors, patterns, and styles.

I'm pretty sure these two guys are Khampas, warriors from southeastern Tibet.  the CIA considered funding their rebellion in the early 60s if I recall correctly.

Tibet is a desolate colorless plain most of the time, the people make up for it with brightly painted buildings and clothes.  I'm not sure what was going on with the two in the second photo and their elaborate red hats - the townsfolk wore everyday clothes, while the pilgrims wore their best.

It was interesting looking back at these photos after I got home.  The bus from Lhasa to the border was a three day adventure, and looking at the Lhasa pix I recognized quite a few of the people in the background who would later be on that bus - like the woman in the off-white sweater on the right

Cool pictures. I'm also surprised they came out so well considering the glass in the plane etc. Spooky looking also considering some old Soviet plane and the desolate region.

Photography is one of my favorite things. Here is one from the Appalachian trail in NJ - I did not do the Appalachian just a short portion thru NJ :)
