Helene
« on: October 01, 2024, 08:05:57 AM »
I've gotten text messages through to two friends in the Ashville, NC area.  They can't believe what has happened there.  Both report that food and water are running low even though they lived in Florida and had prepared for bad weather.
There are a bunch of organizations helping - here are some if you have a little spare cash.
The local Salvation Army - https://southernusa.salvationarmy.org/asheville-buncombe-county
Wings of Hope is organizing pilots to fly in supplies - https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-wings-of-hopes-hurricane-relief
Samaritan's Purse - https://www.samaritanspurse.org/
Operation Airdrop is organizing just that - https://www.operation-airdrop.com/hurricane-helene

@Walks_At_Night - assuming you're OK in the Raleigh area, do you know of other local charities that are actually helping people, not making huge salaries for CEOs?
Merry Christmas - Nice things, and posts, are nicer than nasty things.

We were fine here - just had quite a bit of rain.  If you are out of state, I don't know about reliable charities that wouldn't grift.  Locally I dropped some stuff off at a fire station.  I-40 is opened again and physical items are being taken out west.  Hillbilly Jim is doing well - he has sat internet and a sweet off grid setup so he's fine.  He can't get out yet but had bobcat back straps for dinner last night.

All of their misery, and now, they have to deal with this:

North Carolina is distributing Benadryl and EpiPens as yellow jackets swarm from Helene flooding

I recommend that you watch this at 75% playback speed.

Emergency Text Sent Out: "Get to Higher Ground Now ! ! !"

Only one problem for these folks: Their Cell Towers had already been knocked out by then. And the electricity also.

A portable AM radio could save your life.

Amazingly, there are people in more liberal arms of politics who don't see a problem with eliminating AM radio and converting it over to digital signal services.

Let me guess, it's a free speech thing and free speech is bad. Limiting free speech might be the ultimate desire. I wonder if John Kerry or Hillary Clinton might be able to confirm that for us.
Eh, nevermind...

I have AM/FM handheld radios that work with AA batteries, which are easier to find than 9V batteries, in some cases.

I have an Eton - Scorpion II hand crank/solar screen AM/FM/NWS radio.

I have a handheld ham radio transceiver. I have no license, but would transmit in an Emergency.

I have a Harbor Freight - Viking Compact Power Pack / Car Battery Jumper that I can use to charge a device.

Okay, so left off my Radio Shack DX-440 Shortwave tuner.

My brother stole/sold my dad's Heathkit shortwave. That thing was picking up shit with a 1-ft long telescoping antenna that broke off my mom's portable radio.

That Heathkit had that brown vinyl wood grain look to it and what I recall is probably 10 to 12 different bands. If I recall, it had vfo and squelch controls separate...

Eh, nevermind...
