I think the important thing to learn from all this mask stuff is that the whole world can now rob a bank. Or, a train!

Everything you need to know is right here, the rest is just noise.

All you need is a mask, a candle, a way to make fire and breath to be able to figure it out for yourself.

Masks were never said to stop someone from getting it.
They were always said to be a tool to help you from spreading it to others.
Any human over the age of 2 can prove this to themselves by putting on a mask and trying to blow out a candle.
We have become veal.

The surgical masks protect one from droplets, splashes and sprays. Not viruses. They're disposable, but people don't throw them away, therefore they are less and less effective. They don't wear them correctly, either having it entirely under their noses or not tight on the bridge of the nose.

You are correct.
People are idiots and can't do simple things properly to help cut down the risk.
Why?
Noise.

Wearing of masks in public also drastically cuts down the amount of ugly I have to see.
That alone is worth the minimal effort.

I don't depend on masks to keep me safe. I wear fresh ones properly applied nevertheless. Then no one has to be worried about me.  I keep distance and keep my hands very clean. I've done those two things for years and years. I rode trains to work the last 6 years I worked, and despite the spewing spraying coughing people I saw just about everyday, I did not catch anything. Some places check temperatures before letting someone in, that's not a bad idea. Being out and about before moving, I no longer saw people around who were coughing and sneezing the way they did before, and that is a very good thing as well. It is more remote where I live now, but I still don't see people out and about coughing and sneezing.

There is that. But then pretty/handsome is cut as well.

I've seen people going into stores with bandanas pulled over their noses like the Frito Bandito.  I read somewhere that they aren't as effective as a mask.

What sort of mask are they not as effective as? N95, no. Surgical masks used to protect agains droplets, splashes and sprays, perhaps.
I've been seeing people with face shields, no mask. Might be fine, because they also protect against droplets, splashes and sprays.
I don't like the stuffy feeling of masks. When I worked in the OR, the masks were not stuffy because the temperature is kept lower except for one room type. I'm glad I don't have to work 8 hours with one on in a warm place.

Hi Annie.  Here is an article.  https://www.cnbc.com/2020/08/11/study-bandanas-and-neck-gaiters-not-effective-as-surgical-face-masks.html  You might not want to walk right by people who are wearing them.  My regular cloth masks have replaceable filters.  I almost think that they make me breath harder, though.

Right. They're all the way open at the bottom. Did you know that the N95 come in sizes and if you get the wrong size it is also ineffective against a virus? I avoid walking by people no matter what they are wearing on their face if they are coughing or sneezing. Hasn't happened in a while, I must say.
