Yes. There is a magic to the smaller radio stations of the past and the diminishing independents that still remain like KNYE. They have personality.

I grew up near WAPE 690, an AM rock and roll station. They had an indoor outdoor swimming pool in the front of the building for people to stop by and use. They also hand built a lot of their consoles and equipment and were a dedicated group of people. They were also home to Doug Tracht, aka the Greaseman, for many years early in his career. He was quite a character on the radio when he was here before he went large market. It was all local and people were invited to come by the studio.

In this day of automated corporate rubber-stamped stations, it is always a treat to see the small independent stations succeed. They are really what radio is about.

Even a big city can have a station with flavor. In Chicago, we had WXRT. In Boulder CO, KBCO. They had a format that was called AAA Adult Album Alternative - that at the time didn't have a name! It was the forerunner to 90s era "alternative." On the other hand, stations that get too eclectic and have programs like theramin Saturdays might has well be throwing bricks at their transmitter. There is a balance to be had between popularity and variety.
These corporate monsters that play all the same things are an anathema and a jab to the heart broadcasting. If the station can't be tailored to its city or community we might has well just listen to our own playlists.

The funny thing is, by moving into a larger market, he lost a lot of coverage. The "Big Ape" had a monster signal, often heard well into the eastern seaboard of the U.S. and Canada, and south as far as Belize. BTW...the swimming pool was actually a retention pond for the water cooled x-mitter. I recall hearing Jackson Armstrong when I was stationed at Aberdeen Proving grounds in Maryland. (If conditions were right)

For sure. It's not that I don't appreciate the beauty but I love hiking the landscape where you can see for miles. Starting tomorrow I will be spending some time in the temperate rainforest on the upper coast of British Columbia, just in time for the glorious fall colors.
It may be chilly overnight, so come prepared. Keep an eye out for wolves, bears, bigfoot, Lasha...

They did well with their 50kw daytime and 25kw nighttime transmitter. Here is a photo of the front of the building (I forgot about the tall diving board, something you almost never see anymore) :

This is both simultaneoulsy cool to the point where it reminds me of the buildings with no particular zoning in the "Dreams" thread. Did they have speakers mounted somewhere that you could listen while you swam?

In the dreams the diving board would be off the transmitter tower because it sounds dangerous.

Maybe we could convince Karen to sponsor a CuckshackCam™️ that would be on the front of Art’s Airyn’s house and aimed at the cuckshack. There could be a live video feed on the KNYE website.

Kind of like Early Warning Radar for Airyn and the kids.

Yes, that balance has to be there. In one of the broadcasting magazines there was an article about how, now with the current state of artificial intelligence and voice synthesizers, you could essentially have a fully automated station that would appear to have several "DJs" throughout the day, none of which were real people. Each DJ would have its own personality and could even relay live weather reports, traffic reports, and breaking news. I don't see this as progress.

Like too many things there's a division between can and should.
There was almost a magic moment today when we had Karen finish her vacation report when she picked Steppenwolf - Screaming Night Hog. Real personalities that you can wonder things about such as do they ride motorcycles!

Yes, you could hear what the station was broadcasting outside around the pool. At the time there were no homes nearby. You could also swim under the glass wall into the inside of the building (part of the pool was inside and part outside).

This is the kind of building that should be on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Here is a site that you can still dig up old charts. Just search WAPE.  Sometimes airchecks are out there as well.

The trees have their uses.............  Pictures are taken up on Brockway Mountain over looking Lake Superior in Northern Mich.  All a matter of what you are used to I guess.
Not Monument Valley mind you but kinda neat.

I read somewhere that John Kay has bonified eye problems and thus the sunglasses.  I got to see them at a county fair years ago.  They were really, really good.
