Well, the clock is ticking on the days that the relatively sane Windows 7 will work safely for us all, so its never too early to dive into the world of Linux. The neighbor gave me his old box with Linux and a bunch of other goodies on it and I have no idea what distro it is or anything about it, as I need to get spare monitor before I can boot it up.

I know absolutely zero on the topic of Linux outside of it has an unusual file formatting that seems to hate spaces, but likes underscores "another_file" and that it has the reputation of having a steep learning curve. And of course, the variations of it are called distros. I fret at the thought of losing the ability to play my favorite Tetris game. Will it work with various file types? (ttf, otf, jpg, pdf, mp3) So, its not the big thing, but the millions of little things I worry about.

So in the next week or so, I plan on getting the box out of mothballs and seeing what damage I can do...I will probably at first use Linux for online work and keep the Win machines air-gapped after 2020. I'll let you know how it goes and what I learn :)

Hello Dyna-X.
I hope you had the smarts to turn off your automatic updates.
Keep Win-7 -  -  It was the last good version made.

The Seattle corporation (Windoze)  ;)
has a history of sabotaging their own prloducts - once they reach (EOL) - End Of  Life
NEVER - update security, Patches, or any other B.S. they try to hook you with...
All that will do is slow down your system !
Turn off automatic updates, and run it like she is.

Update your system, and you are FUCKED Micro$oft sabotages their updates

No Shit...

I'm guessing this is a Firefox, not Linux, issue but because it seems to be happening after I updated some stuff per Linux system's advice, maybe so. But I get this error:

"Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s). Error code: SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP"

A lot when I click on some websites, it seems especially when they are small businesses or older sites so I'm guessing it is maybe on their end and my/FF/Linux security settings are too tight?

Another real-time example:

"Secure Connection Failed

The connection to minifang.no-ip.info:9090 was interrupted while the page was loading.

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem."

you settings are to tight. you can always connect with an irc client to minifang.no-ip.info port 6697 (ssl must be enabled) or to minifang.no-ip.info:9090 for a web connection.
and the stream is minifang.no-ip.info:8000/stream

I think you are correct. Looking into it I got stuff battened down so much I't hard to figure out what to do. Got, due to advice on BG in the past, all kinds of adblockers, SSL only, https 'anywhere', uBlock, and also my FF settings with all locked down, no sharing, histories, bookmarks, cookies, etc! Ha. Paranoid much, I ask myself?

If the various flavors of Linux are “based on “ Debian, why not install Debian?

I don't leave 127.0.0.1 without an ad blocker! But no worries, EllGab has earned a spot in my whitelist.

Albrecht, I run two security addons on FFx - NoScript, and RequestPolicy.
They handle everything and they are really fine grained. Get rid of everything else, they are more than likely interfering with each other. (uBlock is notorious for this)
I've hit those errors you've mentioned too.
'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade' or 'sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade'
Your security certificates are outdated.
It's not that your security is too tight.

Https-Everywhere is a good addon - if you are running straight FFx, go ahead and keep it.  It will cause problems on certain sites that are http only, though.
Security comes at a cost - and the cost is usually that you have to learn how the addons work, or avoid certain sites. But the advantages are you don't have to worry about drive-by downloads, or ransom-ware.  ;)

Simple - There are advantages to running forks.    ;)

aka they come with tools preinstalled. so you dont have to apt-get them. if you want near bleeding edge there is debian sid (debian unstable), the rolling update distro. sometimes (but not often) things break, thats how it goes.
if you want the knifes edge, theres  debian experimental branch. things will be broken. many times stuff simple wont work. you are on your own with this.
