that's a lovegun.

A serious moment: I also learned the term "long gun" as a consequence of getting into ballistics. Nowadays these are pretty much divided into rifled and smoothbore guns. The smoothbores are by and large limited by law as shotguns, with exceptions made for blackpowder arms like the early US "Brown Bess" smoothbore musket.
An AK or comparable assault gun would be termed a long gun. Not sure how to classify a submachine gun like an Uzi.
~edit~ looked it up. The Brown Bess is a British design of the 1720s.

Maybe in parlance but in many places it is a legal term and a part of the law and shorter than saying "shotgun or rifle" (for example the ability in some places to be in public with a "long gun" but not a handgun, etc.)

it's sounds childish. when i hear a news anchor say it i think of a muzzle loader. 🤷‍♂️

it sure does. i think firearms are great. the moral panic over "long guns" is ridiculous. concealed weapons are far more likely to kill or injure someone than a semi automatic rifle.

Punt guns are still legal I think but you can't, at least in most places, use them for the original purpose. But maybe should be considered for border usage? Kidding, of course.

assault rifle
There was a little girl,
            Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
            When she was good,
            She was very good indeed,
But when she was bad she was horrid.
