"The modern holiday was established after World War II in 1948 as a day to mark some of the changes of the postwar Constitution of Japan, including fundamental human rights and the expansion of workers rights." Also used as a harvest end time.
Thanks for this information. I enjoy learning about holidays in Japan. For years I have been watching Japanese movies. Akira Kurosawa being my favorite director. I would make my youngest son watch samurai movies with me. This son grows up and becomes an English teacher in Japan. He lives in the city of Osaka for several years. I did not visit him, despite his invites. I dislike flying and could not endure that long flight to Japan. My son would write to me about the customs and holidays. I remember learning about "White Day†which takes place on March 14th, exactly one month after "Valentine's Day". My son is now back in the USA, married with two children. He talks about taking his wife and children to visit Japan.
