Typically a rifle fires a single bullet. A shotgun typically fires “shot” or small bb like projectiles.

Most rifles have “rifled” barrels to get the bullet spinning for stability.

Shotguns can be fitted with a rifled barrel to spin stabilize a single slug for deer hunting. But most shotguns have a smooth bore.
