Great comments, and great photos. Baily reminds me of Boodie.
Boodie is very cute! Please give him a sweet pat for me!

We had a good weekend, 2 live events that were well attended and enjoyed. @wr250 and @Aldous Burbank kept people in chat for well over 3 hours yesterday. Lots of joking around, differing opinions and so many bad music requests.

Yet some are simple minded enough to think I should throw all that away so some moron who used to stalk people he delivered flowers to can shit it all up.

Yeah, no thanks.
Bart, you've created and maintained a wonderful community here, and personally I thank you and am very grateful and happy to be here!

I have been to Europe many times on business and the UK please let me know the name of this pub and it sounds perfect like a ideal place to visit. 😎

THere’s a few rural pubs like this around - one of my locals in my youth was so quiet the landlady used to tell us to make our own drinks and leave the money on the till ;)

Nice pics!

It'll tell you how long ago I first visited Stonehenge when I tell you that the fences had not yet been erected, or if they were, visitors were still allowed to go up to the stones but were forbidden to touch them. Wonderful experience, as was Avebury!

I think Baily had the right idea, after all if he couldn't pee on the stones, what was the point for him?  ;D

Back when things weren’t so silly - Marital Unit was regaling me of tales of when he was there on the solstice and there was a slight to do with the police in the late 80’s. He was such a rebel in his younger years. I think this was around the same time as he threw a full rubbish bin at a car full of MI6 people (!).
Give pees a chance.

Weird. I just watched Our Hospitality on Saturday night and Sherlock Jr. Sunday night and now you post that gif...synchronicity. That's Buster Keaton, right? Either way, that is a really cool gif.

Did he ever put a Forrest Gump type in a wheelie bin?

Here's my unsolicited comments:

I don't mind opposing opinions and think they are a positive contribution when in a discussion. At Bellgab, it wasn't offering an opposing position, it was a smackdown. The sole purpose seemed to be just that. No discussion or dialogue. Just ream the poster for the sake of reaming and move on to the next victim. If that is funny to you then maybe Ellgab isn't for you.
Thank you, Bobs, you said what I was trying to say, only better!

I think uncontrolled offensiveness can close a debate before it starts. I don't believe in safe spaces, then again I don't believe in slaughter of the innocents or the weak. I think to have a civilized debate one can use pejoratives but that should not be all they use. If there is no content or logical argument other than disruption and name-calling how does that further any dialog?
Again, well said, Moosie. The dance is in constantly refining and maintaining the balance, eh?

brig, how you respond wasn't moosie's point. It was about how a culture of targeted abuse sans content suppresses dialog.

So does a culture of "my safe space". A culture of "my safe space" is even more suppressive of dialog IMO.
To me, a safe space does NOT mean always agreeing and being sweet. It allows for all the challenges and differing points of view anyone might have. For me, the line gets drawn at comments which are intended to hurt, humiliate, shame, or smack someone down in a mean way, without furthering the subject of the discussion. In debates, it's an ad hominem attack, and often not allowed no matter how heated a debate might get.

There are some whose comments here I like less than others', and I'm sure some like mine less, too. But all that means to me is I don't have to respond if I don't like it, it's a free space here and we all should be able to say what we want. To me offensive or personally hurtful comments do nothing to further a discussion.

I actually am enjoying this discussion a lot! And I also am sure we'll get back the the missing HW drama shortly!  ;D

IB, Thank You for explaining the situation.
Would it be fair to say that you consider Peter to be a peer of sorts? Since you spoke highly of him, I will take a leap here for the sake of the conversation that the answer is yes. Correct me if I am wrong.

If you can bring forth this understanding, certainly someone of his charm has the self-awareness to realise his humour does not necessarily translate to strangers on a forum.  I wasn't the only one disturbed by his comments.

I can appreciate the acerbic wit of John Cleese, but I don't recall him being repetitively graphically violent to this degree and out of context. Even at the BBC in 1974, comments about blow-torching animals and elderly wouldn't have made it past their censors. Why should a forum, as a form of media, be any different in this regard? A certain level of censorship has been with humanity to keep society in balance since the era of cunieform tablets and probably earlier.

I started posting on Bellgab in 2015. That's three years ago. That is when I met Peter and many other of the regular posters to Bellgab. I've PM'd, Skyped and have even spoken on the phone to Peter as well as some other fellow Gabbers. Most posters are down to earth and not "in character" behind the scenes. Believe me, if "Peter" formerly SV on Bellgab were a dangerous character I certainly would not have associated with him.

Everyone has their different posting styles. I'm sorry that you are so easily offended. The internet is a wild and wooly place. There are many people that want their safe spaces everywhere they go and for everyone to be super nice all of the time. That can be good to a certain extent, but it brings a very boring Church lady atmosphere to any forum. It is also a form of censorship. As much as aggressive 4chan type of behavior and posts kill a forum, so does the other extreme. Any extreme is bad.

You mentioned that you've been attacked with a fire torch. I don't know what type of a life you lead, or what type of people you associate with. Or maybe you were in the military. None of my business at any rate. However for you to think that someone on another continent who was threatening such over the top, bordering on the ludicrous behavior towards cat ladies was being serious gives me pause. Like there is a disconnect with reality. If SV always made posts such as these, I would agree that it is too much and too aggressive. But if you took the time to read his other posts, you would see that he is not the loose cannon that you make him out to be.

You brought up John Cleese. He was in Fawlty Towers as well as on Monty Python. Monty Python did a movie called Monty Python and the Holy Grail. At one point in the movie, one of the characters gets both arms, one leg, and finally the entire lower-half of his body cut off with arterial blood flow and all. Were you aware of this? Do you think John Cleese should have been banned from the comedy arena because of such violent behavior? It was an over the top scene that was meant to be funny by being shocking. And it was one small part of Cleese's career.

Any forum that stops being entertaining and becomes a snooze fest is dead in the water and will have 3 regular posters doing all the posting and being an echo chamber to each other. It scares me to think that is what you want for this forum.

Quote from: Jackstar on August 26, 2018, 09:19:07 PM

...--is the TV-addicted lesbian really the best choice you got as The Voice of Ellgab, or is this some kind of forced narrative? ...

He chose to criticize somebody for their while referencing their sexual orientation.  In 2018, I think most social media forums would have banned his IP and not given him a chance to rectify the situation.

Bart was way more than equitable.  Jackstar was completely out of line and continued although it was quite clear he needed to walk back those comments.
Wow, I thought it was the "TV-addicted" that was the slur! Silly me!  8)

But come to think of it, no wonder I was confused. Does he mean TeleVision or TransVestite?
Ok, it seems it's intended as a slur either way. Never mind.  8)
