I wasn't a big baseball fan but dang I find myself watching every Mariners game. Great announcers and fun yet frustrating team. Just need another sweep of the Astros!

I know it's late in the season but I can't believe we didn't start a thread for baseball earlier. Anyway...
I saw today the Cubs acquired Daniel Murphy from the Nationals. :o WTF! and Why!?
As a Pirates fan, this hurts. The rich get richer. I know it's a rental, but still. :(

Has anybody watched a Baltimore O's game this season? Poor Buck Showalter, my god the looks of horror, anger, frustration and disgust on his face are worth the price of admission. Tonight playing the Jays he looked like he wanted wanted to just hang his head in his hands and get drunk. F*ing hilarious. Feel bad for O's fans this year. As far as the Jays go, they've got some work to do for 2019.
Because they are 2-3 over their last 5 games and have scored a total of 5 runs all by solo homeruns.
Pirates are in the same boat!

I've often wondered how baseball talking heads hold it together for 160+ multi-hour broadcasts with all the travel etc., especially following a team with a losing record.
Some how I don't see Paul Carey and Ernie Harwell duking it out, nor do I see George Kell and Al Kaline doing so either.I admire BB guys n enjoy good ones due to like audio, the stories, etc. But I really appreciate Hockey guys. Ability for fast play by play, still add color, and deal with French n Slavic names and throw in local commercials!
Then again those guys were gentleman that had class.

Oh yeah. I was blessed that I grew up listening to Bruce Martyn. He was awesomeHa! I actually might listen. Prob not but a maybe since I, somehow, can d/l but not stream. Funny when listen to an old Art, game, Rense, etc. When long n busy one forgets until something like the local ice storm has stopped traffic and one remembers. Because much is same. Not players but those just 'accepted' and so are other issues. Crazy, really. Judiciial hearings, mid east wars, weather, homo stuff, illegals, rightwing radicals, taxes,....AM radio has model, as RCH would say.

Why can't the Pirates have prospects like that? :'(
Oh wait. I already know why. ::) :( >:(
They have a gorgeous park to play in :D

It is quite beautiful. Most of the food is great too. 8) I planned on going again this year but spent my money on other things when I was up there. Simply because the owner sucks and he wants more money for upgrades even though the taxpayers paid for it to begin with. Oh and the owner just bought another newspaper. Woooo!
Sorry HB. Sometimes I rant. ;)

;D No worries Shay. It is absolutely fine to rant. Sports brings out that passion.
Sometimes teams have to just rebuild through the draft and prospects.
Although in baseball if you have a owner(s) with deep pockets you can help out that rebuild a lot by acquiring huge assets.
I've been hearing the Phillies are going to make a play for both FA's Bryce Harper and Manny Machado this off season.
It is nice bread and circuses to enjoy a ball game.
Pirates can't rebuild. They are lost. I'm glad they had a small run a few years ago but they simply cannot do it. Fans loved the Marlon Byrd and Justin Morneau additions. Wooo! That put us over the top. Their philosophy is screwed. Their drafts suck. They value prospects too much, and when they could improve with bigger talent they don't make the trade. Then it's too late. Didn't want to give up Josh Bell, Austin Meadows, Tyler Glasnow, and a PTBN for Chris Sale. LOL! Ridculous.
As much I get pissed I love the team. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and attended well over 100 games through the years living there, and try to go every year or so since I moved. Plus I love baseball. Yes, it is nice bread and circus. 8)
Regarding Harper and Machado...Phillies may land one or the other but the cost is too steep for both.
Of course you being a Braves fan can understand my disdain for them. ;) Don't make me relive those championship series. LOL! Sid Bream. ugh.
@ShayP
Jeez Louise Shay. Don't be such a Debbie Downer!
Here. Tom Terrific vs The Candy Man.
LOL! I'm not a Debbie Downer. I just get bummed man! I think you know where I'm coming from. ;)
Candelaria was one of my favorites. :)
I was a kid during that series. Great memories. However then the 80's came and the Pirates stunk throughout my teen years. It looks like when 2020 rolls around it could be the same. Ugh. I'll stop now. :P
Thanks for the video by the way. 8) Instead of reading before I turn the light out and enter my slumber, I will watch that instead. :)

Good for Stros! I love October. College FB at its best with TX/OU etc, baseball getting more important, and NHL starting. And, sorta, not really, won't for a while, getting cooler.....
I certainly don’t have a clue how they are doing the rankings this year. Aggies were ranked #22 when they played #1 Alabama. Ags beat the spread even though they lost and they dropped out of the top 25. Now they are playing #13 Kentucky and the Ags are favored by 6 points. Go figure. At this point I don't care. Frustrated for years now about program and spending priorities and general NCAA pretending "amateur" etc. But still like it, not going up this year though. And we need our rivalry back. Breaking was friggin' ridiculous n shows what 'went wrong' with systems. I want to play ou, aggies, and arkansas every year. Then make conference schedules. History. Bad blood. Fun times.
#BTHOK
Unless they can wrangle up a miracle it's curtains for the Indians. Astros having fun like they're assembling Lego out there..It was a game for a bit but then Stros turned it up and it got ugly. Go Stros!
If Texas and OU would go ahead and join the SEC, you could play those teams every year.True but I think the Legislature would step in as politicians have done before because if TX or ou left the BIG 12 would be nothing and other TX schools would lose a lot of revenue. A lot of politics involved though I would like to play a&m, ou, and arkansas yearly. Keep the ou game in Dallas. Bring back a home/away series with a&m on Thanksgiving or next day and a home/away with Arkansas. A good win but scary in the 4th!

So much politics. And stupid. Take a historic rivalry and benefits both programs and ditch. A lot of weird politics going on in our school systems. Who would've thought Ken Starr would be involved with Baylor, a Baptist college where dancing was banned as recently as the late 90's, would be involved with a yuuge rape etc football scandal. It is crazy. And that is one of the more mundane situations, but bad, of course.....
Glad Yankees lost because Yankees. Now we beat Beantown...
Go Stros!!
Would have rather had home field advantage.Got rid of the hill. ;) We will own it. Away is sometimes good. Pressure off a bit and beating someone in their park is more satisfying. Though I still would rather being in NL, just for purity sake.

This game getting....interesting.
You must not have watched the Astros beat the shit out of the Red Sox last year. I was at the playoff game when Altuve hit 3 home runs. The hill is gone.Sweet. No, I did, that is why I mentioned that we no longer have the hill. But I liked it regardless.
If it's the Brewers vs. the Astros in the WS, I'll cheer for Houston since they are the NL team. :P :-[;D Haaa. Yep, though by old aunt might still bitch and give play-by-play of what went wong.

..was really hoping the Brewers could have got through.. just don't care who wins the series :-[Same.
I don't care who wins but that was a heck of a game last night. Wow. I can't imagine having to play again today!! I also wonder if concessions stopped selling and re-opened because it must have been long for fans also....
I was on all night drunk. Can't even remember going to bed even. I was on cloud nine when the Dodgers won.Idk the Dodgers, or Boston, but like the game and what a long won. Friend txted me his dad's scorecard who was visiting and said he almost ran out (his dad is in his high 80's but stayed up and, again, not a fan of either team but bb fan.) I also felt it in the morning but now with college fb and game tonight figured hair of the dog was the best option and getting back on the horse and out of here to a neighbor's party to watch both....
Haha! Sadly I don’t think the Brewers will have a chance against LA. This year is the AL’s year. Toss up between Hou and Bos. Whoever wins that wins the WS. I’ll go with Hou barely haha.
What are you, a fucking Yankee or Giants fan? At least our bums made it to the World Series!! :P
Boston had the better team. Dodgers will need to add another starter and high quality reliever to the staff. I like the taem otherwise.
This is a ridiculous record.
https://twitter.com/si_mlb/status/1159641479964442624
I’m actually surprised it is that low.
This is a ridiculous record.I've caught every moment of it on the Tee Vee. Jays have a bright future if they can get some fucking consistent starting pitching but Gravity's Astros will take it all this year.

I didn't live anywhere a team growing up, I sure liked the Pirates: Clemente, Stargell, Manny Sanguillen, AO, Dave Parker, even Dock Ellis.
Heck - if the game still featured these kind of players, I'd still be watching. But it doesn't, and I don't.
I was so fortunate to be old enough to be able to go to Atlanta for games when the Braves first came to town. I saw both Drysdale and Koufax pitch and Johnny Roseboro catch. Juan Marichal, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey. Mantle, Maris, Ford for an exhibition game. Bob Gibson, Curt Flood, Lou Brock. Pete Rose, Lee May, Tony Perez, Tommy Helms - all of whom I’d seen in the minors. Clemente, Mazeroski, Stargell. Orlando Cepeda with the Cardinals and Braves. Cletis Boyer with the Yankees and Braves.
But the strangest of all was Satchel Paige. The Braves learned in 1966 that Paige lacked one month on a major league roster to qualify for the MLB pension, so in September when the rosters expanded, the Braves signed him. Late one Sunday game, he got up in the bullpen and started warming up. The crowd was screaming for him to go into the game. Of course he didn’t, but I at least got to see him throw the ball.
... Satchel. Seeing him throw, bullpen or not, would be great. I envy you. 8)
And the Nationals surprise everybody. World Series bound. They won't beat the Astros 8)
FUCK THOSE CUNTS.
Bullshit Bud Selig cunty backroom dealing cunty cunts.
Did someone bet on the Cardinals?

FUCK BASEBALL.
It has been dead to me since October 3, 2004.
C’mon @KSM
I could use some help rooting for the Astros
C’mon @KSMI am! I've said it all season long. They, those Astros.. are this years team. This pathetic lucky rabbits foot team, the Nationals don't have what it takes!

Yes, Go Astros. BTW they're my go-to team after the Jays. Jays actually won a series against them this year. All those young and up n coming rookies. Rebuild will hit pay dirt season after next.
I got to see a few Expos games in Montreal in 76 and 77. A guy I worked with in the USAF had played high school ball with Ray Burris and he would get tickets whenever the Cubs were in town. Eventually Ray Burris played for the Expos. It’s funny I remembered Ray’s name, but not the name of the guy I sat next to at work.
Do you think the people of Montreal are cheering for their old team? Or do they want them cursed.

How can you even go there because, well, Kobe?
A stroke of genius.
Too soon?
Nah. Statute of limitations has expired. ;D
Flu shot ;)
Yeah I hear ya
But still we ain't seeing anything for months. :'(
Flu shot never! My alcohol stream in my veins makes me impermeable to viruses. Refresh my memory. @KSM Who's your team? I'm too lazy to scroll through the whole thread. :-\@ShayP

When I was a kid, looking at the Expos hats on my baseball cards, I couldn't figure out what the logo was.
I finally decided it said Elk - the 'e' and 'l' seemed somewhat clear, the third letter must be a 'k' - but that never made any sense. Years later someone said the logo was a three colored 'M'. Um, ok. It's the land of hockey, what do they know.

I’m fed up. Now baseball is forcing the Braves to give up the tomahawk chant they stole from Florida State. Some pitcher was offended. I wonder what Levi Walker thinks.PLEASE tell me you're kidding. Seriously! I mean, I want to know that you are just kidding!
You know the shark has been jumped when Lebron James has entered the discussion. I tired of that guy at least 10 years ago - and I don't even watch the games.
Fuck off, Lebron - go back to yapping about Kobe's ''legacy''

But. But, he's "King" James. His opinion matters. ;D ;)
In the wake of the Houston Rockets GM sending out that tweet in support of the people of Hong Kong, he was the most outspoken of all the greedy NBA players kowtowing to the thug regime in China.
Maybe the MLB commissioner could give him a call and tell him to stay out of it, remind him it's just about the money
Huh? How will that be enforced? Are they going to throw all the fans that do it out of the game? We know that won't work. They will stop the ballpark organist from playing the chop music.
They will stop the ballpark organist from playing the chop music.
Bastards. MLB is proposing an 82-game regional season - probably OK - but then they want universal designated hitter. The spawn of Satan.Still significant hurdles to jump through as the owners want players to agree to a revenue split since there won't be fan attendance. I'm not holding my breath.

Maybe they can get some scabs then. I can resurrect my old curve ball. May have to get back into fighting shape tho.............Senda could get a job catching for the San Francisco Giants in that case.

Yesterday, I was flipping around the tv and ran across a channel showing the 1965 All Star game. The thing that struck me was how much faster the game was. The pitcher got the ball back from the catcher, stayed on the mound, got his sign, and pitched. The batter stayed in the box, or maybe took one step out to get some dirt, and was ready to hit. I started timing the pitches. They were between 15 and 20 seconds apart.
I think they are 15-20 minutes apart now.

The AL rallied and the NL called in Don Drysdale in relief. He got the side out, and then was pinch hit for. The next inning, Sandy Koufax pitched and Bob Gibson was warming up. I wondered who started and found it was Juan Marichal and Milt Pappas for the AL.Drysdale hit better than most pinch hitters do nowadays. I recently read in a story about this short season DH rule that he had consecutive 7 home run seasons...
Drysdale hit better than most pinch hitters do nowadays. I recently read in a story about this short season DH rule that he had consecutive 7 home run seasons...There's a lot of classic baseball on youtube. Including the old timer games from the 80s or so. I've been living off classic baseball and classic boxing for the last couple of months. As far as hitting pitchers go, my favorite was Carlos Zambrano for the cubs. Ridiculous power. Also the Ken Burns Baseball documentary series is a great re-watch if your soul needs baseball healing.
Is this old channel on Pluto tv? I'm disenchanted with the news and have been binging Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Maybe baseball will soothe my soul...
I used to love baseball. Especially going to the park, smelling the freshly mowed grass on a sunny afternoon, watching the players warm up and take BP, sitting in the bleachers with the knowledgeable fans. The game was about 2 hours and 20 minutes.
When scores are 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-2, every batter, every base, every pitch matters and you're on the edge of your seat. When it's 13-2 after 5 hours in, and it's only the 5th inning, it's unbearable. I hate baseball now, it's awful - I haven't watched in years, not even the 2010, 2012, and 2014 World Series when ''my'' team won.
It's a shame they thought they needed juiced balls - and then juiced players - to draw fans back after that grotesque strike in '93 and a lot of true fans turned their backs on it, so they thought they had to lure in new fans with more ''action''. I guess it worked, but to me this is more like watching slo-pitch, where half the batters get hits and everyone scores - fun to play, completely unwatchable.
This year there is a new 3 batter minimum or end of inning rule for pitching changes. So the left handed only guys should not be used as obnoxiously as before.
I could not agree more. The worst thing for me is the pitching changes. You'll see a starter on super cruise through 7 innings - in complete command of the game. Pitching say a 2 hit shutout. Since he threw 100 pitches or for some other reason they will hook him at the start of the 8th.
They will bring in a right hander who will get the first batter out but since the next guy hits lefty, they'll hook the right hand pitcher and bring in a left hander. So on and so forth. Some where in the pattern they will hit one of the relievers all over the ball park and the game will slip away.
This year there is a new 3 batter minimum or end of inning rule for pitching changes. So the left handed only guys should not be used as obnoxiously as before.
Well the Pirates play the Tigers today and just out of boredom I checked in on the game. Still no outs in the first, the Pirates are down 5-0, and our starter Derek Holland gave up 4 home runs so far. Seems like everything is status quo.
Seem righteous to me.
https://www.fox4news.com/news/former-angels-employee-charged-in-tyler-skaggs-fatal-fentanyl-overdose-at-north-texas-hotel
... It was later learned by investigators that Kay had lied to them, and told another Angels employee that he visited Skaggs’ room the night of his death.
The Drug Enforcement Administration determined that Kay would regularly give the blue M/30 pills – dubbed “blue boys†– to Skaggs and others.
The Angels put out a statement that investigation found no one in management was aware an employee was giving players, including Skaggs, opioids.
Kay made his first court appearance Friday morning, and faces up to 20 years in federal prison if he’s found guilty.

How is LerBom doing keeping Kobe's legacy alive?
... The Pirates will have the lowest payroll in baseball next season. *sigh*
Does the DH for Babe Ruth stand for doughnuts and hotdogs? No, seriously, I hope others put some teams together. You've got quite the roster there, Shay.
The DH is unAmerican! >:( er...I mean unNational! ;)
BENCH
C-Johnny Bench
Don't think this got by me.
Anybody want to put together an all-time team...
I will have mine done once I decide if I want Ellis Valentine or Vladimir Guerrero Sr in right field.
Where you putting Le Grand Orange and Felipe Alou?
I thought I’d pick the best all time that I actually saw play.
OF - Henry Aaron, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle
1b- Orlando Cepeda
2b - Pete Rose
3b - Eddie Matthews
SS - Ozzie Smith
C - Johnny Bench
DH - Rusty Staub
P - Sandy Koufax, Whitey Ford, Bob Gibson, Phil Niekro
RP - Bruce Sutter
It’s heavily weighted towards the National League as I mostly saw Braves games. How could I fit in Roberto Clemente? Also, in 1968 the Braves signed Satchel Paige. I saw him warm up in the bullpen.

Anybody have any interest in this season? This is the first year I forgot about Spring Training. Typically I would count down the days until pitchers and catchers report.
Oh well. I expect the Pirates to lose 110 games this year, provided there's a full season.
Not watching until Tiger Woods takes Bud Selig for a drive.
Or the fucker just dies.
Die Bud Selig, die.
I read that and immediately imagined Jello Biafra making a song out of it.
I had a dozen of them on the radio in the early 00's.
I also got taken to court by Jeffery Loria and MLB for writing them!
Really!?

Yup.

I won and then released another song about him right after.
Was just checking out the Tigers roster the other day. They have Miguel Cabrerra, whom is 75 years old and knocking down 30 million a year and a bunch of dudes named Tarik Skubal.
It's going to be grim. Jordan Zimmerman is gone now at least - Thank God.
Ha! Glad you won. The next song was icing on the cake. ;D

Spring what?
As a kid I always wanted to go. One year a friend hat had moved to Phoenix invited me down. I pictured myself sitting in the sun, watching two or three games a day for several days - like I did when the fast-pitch softball tournaments would come to our town (a much better game than baseball, even before MLB became a joke).
Most of the games are sold out, I finally make it to a Cubs - Giants game - and the tickets are $30. F that. This is in the 1980s. My friend remarked that I wasn't as excited about spring training as he thought. Yeah, no shit. We did non-baseball tourist stuff - much better.
HARD YES. @ShayP
Not having an NHL season has really put me in a funk. The TV's in bar that would usually be set to live multiple games at this time of year now just play whatever the fuck is on TSN and Sportsnet which is usually basketball (UGH) or PVR'd MLB games from seasons past.
So again; YES I am diving all the way into the pool come 04/01
Your YES is soooo HARD. @KSM ;D Please refresh my memory. Who's your team? I'm too lazy to look through the thread. Anyway, I'm hoping they let fans into PNC Park this year. I was looking forward to going to a game when I moved back to Pittsburgh. Heck, I was looking forward to a lot of things, but ya know...COVID. ::) :(Not to be overly obvious but my team is the Jays and they're going to be a force this season. If we still had the Expos up here they would be another. The pirates are tempting but O-so problematic - you know :-\ Sometimes I think the Pens could beat the Pi's in a baseball game. :P sorry :-[ @ShayP
Not to be overly obvious but my team is the Jays and they're going to be a force this season. If we still had the Expos up here they would be another. The pirates are tempting but O-so problematic - you know :-\ Sometimes I think the Pens could beat the Pi's in a baseball game. :P sorry :-[ @ShayP
I like the Tigers and Brewers but those too are pipe dreams. Hmm maybe the Reds?
@ShayP your Pirates suck. Cubs just happen to suck worse.
So, what (Texas) team is your pick for this year? ;) ;D +1 :)
One player among the signees is on MLB Pipeline’s Top 30 International Prospects list, No. 23 Esmerlin Vinicio, a 16-year-old left-handed pitcher from Venezuela who agreed to a $750,000 deal, according to industry sources.https://www.mlb.com/giants/news/giants-to-sign-international-prospects
The Giants reached a $1 million deal with 16-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Aeverson Arteaga, according to sources, and a deal worth $800,000 with Anthony Rodriguez, another 16-year-old shortstop from Venezuela. Hard-throwing right-handed pitcher Manuel Mercedes, 16, of the Dominican Republic, who signed for $400,000, was also among the signees.

Selig still sucks.
LOL! @GravitySucks Did you watch any of the game? It was painful. So slow. Two hours went by and they were only in the 4th inning. I had to tune out.
I'm still trying to figure out why Tampa Bay and Miami played each other on opening day. It was in the 30's with snow flurries for the Tigers game in Detroit yesterday. Which the Tigers managed to win somehow despite modern managerial practices, i.e. starter is throwing a 2 hit shutout, so let's pull him and bring in a gaggle of bullpen guys - one of whom is bound to get roughed up.
@Walks_At_Night Did I ever tell you the story about my one visit to the new Comerica Park/Tiger Stadium? My gf and I stayed at the Marriott at the Renaissance Center. She’s the one from Algonac. August 24 (and 25), 2007. I took her to the game because Roger Clemens was back pitching for the Yankees and I knew it was going to be one of his last games. We had seen him pitch several times as an Astro.
We took the light rail to the game. We had field box tickets near first base. Wicked lightning and thunderstorm delays several times during the game which started after a 4 hour delay. They played Lionel Ritchie’s “All Night Long†several times over the PA speakers and made us move under the grandstands.
I could have gotten a hit off Roger Clemens that day. I noticed during the second or third batter that he was telegraphing his pitches. As he paused before his windup, he held his mitt differently depending on which pitch he planned to throw. There was at least one more rain delay during the game and it didn’t start until after 11pm and didn’t end until about 3:30am. Carlos Guillen hit a walk off 3 run homer in the 11th.
There was an usher named Charlie working the field boxes. This guy was older than dirt and was a real piece of work. By the 7th inning there were probably only 2-3 thousand left in the stands but through the entire game he kept chasing out people that had moved down to the field boxes.
We left the stadium at about 3:45am. Got to the light rail station and the doors were locked because I guess it shuts down at midnight or some foolish time. I was in severe panic mode. No real idea which direction or how far the Renaissance Center was. My gf pointed in some really dark direction and said “it’s only about a mile. Let’s walk.†Just what I wanted to do. Walk through downtown Detroit at 4 am.
I made her walk down the middle of Jefferson Avenue. As in the middle of the road. Of course there was not a single car driving down the road and in the 15-20 minute walk I didn’t see a single cop. I refused to take my chances on the sidewalk. I knew I could handle myself in 99% of the situations I might encounter but was really concerned about her safety. I also new I could run much faster than she could and still wonder if I would have just left her to deal with any would be attackers. She’s a redhead so I might have needed to pull her off any unsuspecting assailant. Needless to say we made it back to our room safe. Not sure we would have gotten there safely if the game had ended at 1am.
There’s quite a bit of that experience that I will never forget.

I've actually never been to Comerica Park. Was never too impressed with the design of it. Tiger Stadium might have been a shit hole but it was our shit hole and it killed me to see them leave and have it torn down like it was. I had hoped the new stadium at least would have kept the multi-deck look and the over hang in right field but they just went with a cookie cutter look like many of the newer stadiums...
Same here with Candlestick Park. I loved that place. It wasn't as cold, foggy (inside the park!), and windy as they said - just sometimes. Should have treated it as a home field advantage instead of even Giants players hating on it.
I used to go in just a t-shirt and jeans, and it was really too cold for that just twice - both were extra inning week night games.
They used to give out pins for staying to the end of those extra inning night games

Get loaded before you go. :D ...Ha! The kind of advice I would expect from Mr. Rogers. ;D
@PolkaDot Coors field is a nice place to watch a baseball game. I took my gf and daughter to one about 10 years ago. The ball really sails in the thin air. And you get to watch the manager touch the pitcher’s butt every time they make a pitching change.Yes, I suppose if you're into that sort of thing @GravitySucks . Hmmm, I should become the manager of a baseball team. I wouldn't have to actually watch the game would I?

That's the way to do it! :D @PolkaDot I'm sorry, I confuse easily. :-[ Something did seem odd.

Why did the parents have to tell her he wasn't playing? She's 6
Took my daughter to an Astros game way back in 2008. I snagged a foul ball he hit in batting practice and gave it to her. I wonder if he would sign it.Maybe you can corner him at Redsfest 2021.
She was there when he got ejected in the 1st inning. Perhaps the parents should've told her that these things happen in baseball, explain why, and that she'll get to see him another time. But you know how it goes. ;)
That's probably what they did. But a 6 year old doesn't really know what's going on at an MLB game. If she'd somehow heard over the loudspeaker he'd been ''ejected'' she wouldn't have known what that was. Without being told directly he was kicked out of the game and wouldn't return, she'd have had no idea.
To me, if she asked a question answer it, but otherwise why ruin her day.
She’s much happier now.

Why do the majority of players so harshly glare at the pitcher as they walk back to the dugout after being struck out? Some serious dirty looks when all the pitcher did was his job. kind of funny

Suppose it depends on the pitcher who got you that at bat.
If some fat slob like Bartolo Colon strikes you out, that might warrant some stink eye:

Fuck pro sports...This. I’m so indifferent to the NFL anymore, I forgot San Diego no longer had a team.
It's not so hard to tune out of pro sports in San Diego. Considering the pro baseball team is on an unlistenable FM station, there is no pro football or basketball and the other sports are small time: Lacrosse soccer and minor league hockey.
This. I’m so indifferent to the NFL anymore, I forgot San Diego no longer had a team.
Curious of the Guardians name came from anywhere, looked around and found out Cleveland has a these "Guardian of transportation" statues in the city and have been there for about 100 years.
Knowing the connection to the city, I like it, and it's original, is there another Guardians team name anywhere?
Those are misogynistic values represented in those statues. Women aren't included because chauvinistic men think women aren't capable to protect transportation!Ha! Cleveland can play like statues.
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Cubs suck3 of those players have San Diego ties.
In the last 24 hours they dumped Rizzo, Bryant, Baez and Kimbrel
Huh. Interesting. Cool statues. Cleveland Guardians just doesn't roll off the tongue though. Not a fan of Cleveland anyway, but still. I had a feeling they'd go with Spiders or Rockers.
There was an XFL team named the Guardians. (I think)
I don't remember baseball being like this
... I have never been so bored in my life. Well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration but it was definitely boring. It's a rarity when I leave a game early. In the bottom of the 5th, after sitting there for 2+ hours, I said 'the hell with it' and got out of there. Simply awful baseball. It seemed like every batter was in a 2-2 or full count in every at bat. The pitching just sucked.
I checked the box score this morning and they had the time listed as 3 hours and 40 minutes. I love the game itself, but it just is too long and I just don't see the same game I grew up with. I didn't see any sort of strategy. I didn't see maximum effort. It just wasn't a good experience across the board and it saddened me because as I was walking to parking garage I came to the realization that I don't care if I ever go again. It was a similar feeling you have when you break up with someone. Saying that last goodbye...
This is very similar to the way I feel about the game.
To me baseball is 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, 3-1, etc, and takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes to play. The batter stays in the batters box, the pitcher gets the ball and pitches it. Win or lose, the SP tries to make it through the entire game (Juan Marichal had more career complete games than wins)
It's not about striking out, walking, or hitting home runs, it's about the pitcher getting the hitter to hit his pitch early in the count, and to batter trying to get on base any way he can then moving around to score.
When it's 2-1 in the 8th inning, every at bat counts, every runner counts, every base counts, and every pitch counts. When it's 13-4 in the fifth, no single run, pitch, or at bat really means anything, baseball is a horribly boring game. Especially when we've already been at the ballpark for 4 hours.
I just don't get these announcers who played back when I watched who say they still love the game and don't understand what I just posted - ''longer games just mean more baseball, why are you complaining?'' Or the fans who seem to like it.
I blame Nolan Ryan for making it about strikeouts, and Earl Weaver for famously waiting around for 3 run HRs. I heard a guy on sportstalk radio the other day say something like 35% of ll at bats are now either Ks, Ws, or HRs, ugh!
“I started digging graves as a high school sophomore for my father, who managed a couple of cemeteries. He started paying me $35 a grave and I did it for 35 years. It was pocket money and was good exercise, but we also did it when the ground was frozen and it was snowing and sleeting. Let me tell you, I buried a lot of people over the years.

Re: The Ask Bart Anything thread. Milt Wilcox in action. He had a unique motion and delivery.
His breaking pitches, especially down in the zone, were filthy.
@ShayP He was fun to watch. Actually I think he would pitch one more game after that in the world series and that would be the last effective appearance he would have in the bigs. He had all kinds of shoulder issues - that offseason he had surgery on it and never was any good after that. One of the great unknowns is how well the Tigers would have done with a healthy Mark Fidrych, Jack Morris, Dan Petry, Dave Rozema and Milt Wilcox as their starters. As it was, only Morris stayed healthy and he was rather an ass.
I'm not familiar with Rozema. @Walks_At_Night The other three make a rock solid foundation for a pitching staff. I haven't looked it up but was there a crossover with them when Willie Hernandez was the closer? I may have my timeline mixed up.
The 1984 Tigers. 35-5 and well on their way to crushing my Padres.
@ShayP Rozema came up the year after Fidrych and went 15-7 with about a 3.00 ERA at the age of 20. Great things were hoped for him but he hurt his arm the next year [not as badly as Fidrych did] and was never the same. Then a few years later he tried to Kung Fu kick someone in an on field brawl and shredded his knee. That totally finished him off. Hernandez came along a bit later:
Year first joined Tigers:
1. Fidrych 1976
2. Rozema / Wilcox 1977
3. Morris 1978
4. Petry 1979
5. Hernandez 1984
Sorry Bro. I don't think Gwynn ever got a title did he?
I like to check out the 'hot stove' stuff this time of year since the winter meetings are approaching. I am having a problem recognizing the Cleveland Guardians. I see the name and I get confused then realize they are not the Indians anymore. From what I've read, Indians from multiple cities do not mind these names.
Long live Chief Wahoo.

Doug Jones died. As I mentioned in the Celeb Deaths thread he was a joy to watch pitch. Everyone loves the guy with electric stuff but I have a soft spot for the shit ballers too.
I'm with you man. To me it's about just getting guys out. You don't need to throw 95 mph to do it. His breaking pitches were filthy. Some looked like he was throwing a screwball. Seeing Frank Thomas at the plate looking foolish was a rarity. All of those guys in the video looked lost. @Walks_At_Night
I remember when slowballer Randy Jones got in the head of Pete Rose so bad that the switch hitter went up lefty against the left-hander to change his luck.
Baseball lost its brain.
Junk baller! Love those types. I knew he signed with mybelovedPirates but never played. I didn't know he won a Cy Young award. If I did, I forgot. Anyway, I looked it up and he started 40 games the year he one, won 22, had 315 innings pitched and 25 complete games. :o Wow.
You’ve never seen a slow ball until you’ve seen a Phil Niekro eephus pitch.
I think Niekro's was higher and slower. It made his knuckleball look like a fast ball.
BTW - will it still be Major League Baseball of the NL adopts the DH?

How could Gil Hodges and Minnie Minoso not already be in the Hall of Fame?
I see Olivia and Kaat also made it. Kaat was really good but I'm not too sure if he was Hall of Fame good. I guess that means that Tommy John will make it too - they are about the same numbers wise.
I remember Kaat more for how he pitched, not his statistics... His motion. That and pitching quick games.

Look at his positioning at the end of the delivery. Dead solid perfect for fielding. No wonder why he won a mountain of gold gloves.
Sorry @Bart Ell the dream is over. Even though I'd like to see Montreal back in baseball, I don't this this split team with two cities so far apart, let alone in two different countries would ever work.

1st pick overall in the 2020 draft. Babied in the minors last year, made the club coming out of spring training and so far....nothing. 8 at bats with 6 strike outs and has not hit the ball hard once.

Well Tork got his hit. Not exactly an Ungodly Shot but it counts. Only 2,999 more to go.
I can believe that story. I met Pete a few times. He had a sense of humor. Also an astounding memory. It's really sad that they're considering cheaters for the Hall of Fame versus a guy betting for his team and games between other clubs. At least I've heard he's never bet against his own team...

I've always thought Pete should be perhaps punished some other way, but put him in the Hall. Seeing all the other good not great players that have gone in since he played, it's more of a joke than ever.
Their reasoning is, for example, if he bet on his team one night, he may not wish to use a closer the previous night in order to keep him fresh for the game he did bet on.

Interesting picture of Johnny Bench. It has been said that shaking hands with an old catcher is liking sticking your hand in a bag of peanuts. Robinson and Brett don't have that issue. No runs, no drips, no errors.

@ShayP I haven't had a chance to catch any Pirate games thus far. How's it looking in the early stages? Jays have won their first 3 series rather decisively. Need some tightening up on the starting pitching front but I am optimistic that it will be a pretty good season for them. Also, been a bit of a bitch finding their home games down here so what's one more subscription! ::)
*cough* So, Pirates? I need an American franchise as my back-up team.
@PB You're a Mariners guy, correct? I'm not.
No, I never liked the Mariners. From the day they decided on that name. It's right down there with ''Guardians'' and ''Commanders''.A's huh. Not sure why but I like them. They looked good against the Jays in the last series that ended yesterday.
Lifelong Giants fan, even growing up in Washington State. As a proud fair weather fan, I jumped aboard the A's bandwagon as a kid when they won the World Series three straight years with a clubhouse of great characters (including the owner they all hated),

I like the Jays this year. @KSM I think they win that division. The Yankees seem to be the favorite but I have a feeling the Jays, barring injuries, get red hot late in the season and keep the Yankees behind them. You're on. I shall don the Pirate hat! I'll add them to my game notifications. Nothing beats watching games in my gym. And speaking of the Jays, Yankees and the AL East - those poor Orioles fans. Year after year after disappointing year.
The Pirates are 5 - 4 and playing with a lot of energy. The bats were cold a few games but the seem to be playing good fundamental baseball for a change. If you look at their roster, even the most avid fan of baseball in general will say "Who?" They need to solve RF. I'm tired of them putting light hitting utility players out there daily. It's like having the pitcher hit.
Come aboard the Pirate ship. They need all the support they can get. More importantly, an owner that will spend $$$.
By the way, I've stated before that I was a fan of the Expos growing up. Blue Jays too. Dave Stieb was one of my favorite pitchers.
Now that the DH is everywhere, there is no Major League Baseball.Or Juan Christmas tree for that matter. :'(
The A's of Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Sal Bando, Bert Campaneros, Dick Green, Joe Rudi, Rick Monday, Blue Moon Odom, Ken Holtzman, Rollie Fingers, Charlie Finley, Vida Blue...You forgot Gene Tenace and Herb Washington!
I haven't given a crap since, although I did go to most of the playoff and WS home games in the Bash Brothers era.
That Sasaki kid in Japan is something special.
Jeez his stuff is filthy. :o You have to be concerned about the velocity at that age. And the splitter. I think that you will remember @Walks_At_Night when the splitter was the fashionable pitch in the 80's and ruined some arms. Plus, you have these guys (kids) nowadays just throwing too hard. Look at all the TJ surgeries, etc. Seems like they escalate over time.
Roger Craig managed the Padres in 78-79 and pushed the splitter/forkball. He killed a few arms. Guys would strain themselves to keep the velocity...
This story covers him a few years later...

Roger Craig managed the Padres in 78-79 and pushed the splitter/forkball. He killed a few arms. Guys would strain themselves to keep the velocity...
This story covers him a few years later...

@KSM The Pirates just suffered their worse loss in franchise history. 140 years.Ouch. And I thought the Reds were bad. ;)
The Cubs beat them 21-0.
Quote from manager Derek Shelton, "We just didn't play well." He followed that up with some other drivel. Pearls of wisdom.
A loss is a loss though. But 21-0 in baseball. :o
Strangely enough the game was 2 hours and 47 minutes long. The first and only game I went to when I moved back approached the 3 hour mark by the end of the 5th inning. I left after that due to boredom. It was a low scoring game too. I figured this game would've lasted a long time considering the runs scored, but no. The Cubs dug that grave and buried them quickly. I can imagine if they did a highlight reel it would have the Benny Hill theme music playing.

MLB getting rid of the Shift for next season. WTF ::) why ::)
I hate the Shift. They just want more balls in play. They wouldn't have to get rid of it though if hitters could adjust. I can't remember the player's name but he bunted for a double. The entire infield was on the right side and the ball dribbled into the outfield between second and third and everybody was confused on what to do.You're basing this on one at bat?

Sooooo...Tony La Russa orders an intentional walk during a 1-2 count. :o ::) Then it leads to a home run by the next batter. That was on Trea Turner. I think... Best thing they could have done was pitch around and see if he chases. LaRussa was acting like analytics took over from common sense.

I have been thinking about something for a few months...killer bee's, tumors, and random baseball players on the mind. Although! the bee's die off in the Astrodome and that's where all this "thinking" of yours started. From the astrodome to here. I think you've come full circle.
I heard about a cluster of cancer in law enforcement officers that they tied to radar guns...
Then I thought about Gary Carter. The longest tenured primary catcher in Canada, where their product testing is different than in the States.
Gary Carter died of a brain tumor.
Just thinking.

I think you've come full circle. The A's are managed by one of Bruce Bochy's disciples, given the right players Kotsay will get decent results. Same for Phil Nevin of the Angels.
Now you can relax.
How bout those Oakland A's.. hopeless.
The A's are managed by one of Bruce Bochy's disciples, given the right players Kotsay will get decent results. Same for Phil Nevin of the Angels.
No they won't. The Angels have a plus roster and they are below .500 Mike Trout will be the Dan Marino of baseball. Nevin isn't the answer.Phil Nevin has managed 3-4 games. Though Maddon was more of a sacrificial lamb, his history was influenced more by Soscia (similar to Bud Black because of their ties). Bochy's style was more regenerative even with shitty rosters and decisions from the front office.
The A's had the right players, some left, and they are trash. They really need to get out of Oakland.
However, look at my Pirates. Also trash. Need new ownership and learn how to develop talent.
As long as they're always making new rules for MLB can they please do away with long pregame shows. The content varies but between the virtue signaling and the players being nice to kids ::) ETC it becomes a long arduous event. I just want to get into the damn game.
And put in an eight-second pitch count. If the pitcher doesn’t thrown in time, it a called ball. If the batters not in the box, a called struck. The stadiums could get creative in how the timer goes off. With men on base, increase to 12-seconds.In the Jays vs O's game yesterday there was a challenge on the Baltimore side on whether their guy was safe at first or not. It took 5 full minutes for them to come back with the call. One of the guys calling the game was suggesting a time limit for the actual review of the play as it was holding things up and fans began to booooo.
Bring back legal brush back pitches.
But a shock device in all the umpires’ pants. After a minute and a half, the shocker goes off every ten seconds.
Removing Angel Hernandez will improve league likeability by 13%.
He filed his third grievance against MLB. He's claiming the league has a diversity problem when it comes to hiring and promoting umpires. Because when you suck, you place the blame on someone else or other circumstance. He thought he should've been promoted to a Crew Chief.Falkieball!
These are the recent scores on
https://umpscorecards.com/umpires/
Angel Hernandez is 92.7% and the guy at the top is at 91% accuracy.
Looking at the link, there are 89 umpires and only 17 are worse than Hernandez. So, 72 are better yet he thinks he should be a Crew Chief. I guess since he's been in the league a long time he deserves it. (22 years)
The Pirates used to let any ticket holder come in early, watch batting practice and get autographs if the players chose to do so. Sometimes it was maybe just 4 or 5 players that would sign, but regardless it was a good experience especially for the kids. Now it's only for season ticket holders. Booooo!!!!!!
Damn Yankees. Fuckin-dammit.

Toronto just lost a starting pitcher to Tommy John too...Ross Stripling, their utility pitcher/former starter has been in place of that pitcher you refer to for a few games now. Stripling is awesome and I couldn't be happier so Tommy John is a blessing.

Meanwhile the Yankee's are about to sweep the Jays with game 4 tonight. Jays have a great team this year. They've been rolling along winning series after series and then, all the sudden, they hit the Yankee wall. BOOMHOLYCRAPPAFUCKNOSE, BATMAN! I spoke too soon. It was only a 3 game series and the Jays came from behind yesterday for a 10-9 win over the Yankoo's! I turned off on the 7th when it was 9 to zip for the Yanks. Now I regret bailing.
@ShayP your Pirates really suck. They don’t suck quite as bad as the Cubs this year but I needed to vent.
@ShayP your Pirates really suck. They don’t suck quite as bad as the Cubs this year but I needed to vent.
RebuildingTanking, not sucking.
@ShayP, they better not play the "he makes up for it with his glove" BS. Padres had Austin Hedges. Dude was way above average with defense and had high framing rankings (and he has a definite future as a coach, executive or television personality, the dude comes off as really likable), but he killed so much offense.
When you could pitch around 2 or 3 guys (pitcher, catcher and another glove-first position) in a line up, never good.
The Padres rebuilt for what seemed like a decade. That backfired horribly with acquisitions like Matt Kemp, James Shields, Will Myers and Eric Hosmer...
https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hedgeau01.shtml
... I must admit, I looked at the Cubs roster and thought "WTF?"
@sean92008 Hedges is a career .192 :o I knew he wasn't good with the average but had homerun potential. I'd rather have Hedges than what we have now.Myers is a video game/skateboarder dude. He was famously caught on twitch complaining to teammates that he didn't like practices or something of the sort.
The Pirates starting catcher is hitting .155 and the backup .111 No power whatsoever. Average defense.
Regarding the Padres acquisitions, they were bad. However I always thought Myers would be a star dating back to his days with the Royals. Nope.
Myers is a video game/skateboarder dude. He was famously caught on twitch complaining to teammates that he didn't like practices or something of the sort.
He also made a very famous comment that became a lightning rod in San Diego... He said he liked the Mexican food better in South Carolina! I am not joking, this still gets referenced on sports talk radio.
He had immense potential and, when he played first base, he was really hitting on all cylinders. The Padres dicked around with him too much. They even put him at third base for a bit. He said he was willing, but you got to know that he probably started to hate the front office by that point.
I'm pretty sure this is his walk year and he hasn't stepped it up and got himself hurt (he was nearly beheaded by a line drive off of Robinson Cano's bat, dropped to his knees and it irritated a pre-existing knee problem). I think a team might put a flyer on him for outfield depth, he doesn't have a reputation for a good work ethic. I could see Pittsburgh offering a low-ball deal... Jake Marisnick? Come on...
He will not be coming back unless he pulls one of those great second halfs and ownership is stupid. (Which they are.)
Player that I am most surprised about right now is a picture named Ryan Weathers. He was doing great until he hurt his leg on a play. He had a real maturity to him, his father was a 19-year major league pitcher as well. He just cannot find the strike zone anymore. Rumor was that the cops wanted to look at him and they brought him up to make a spot start in Chicago. First inning was great, then he proceeded to shit up the whole place.

Back when I was picking my teams on the MLB.TV app I added the pirates. I still get the game notifications but have yet to watch one game. ;D Sorry @ShayP after that 21 - 0 loss I had to bail, but at least I know when they're playing which is always when the Jays are playing. Perhaps they'll play each other this season. ?
Have the umpires become are worse this season or is technology just catching more bad calls. This year I have so so many players/fans freaking out over bad balls/strikes call than I have remembered in the past.I have no idea what the hell is going on with those guys. It's like they all go get pepper sprayed before each game. Fuckers can't see shit, let alone call it. Horrible. They should be put on skates and sent to the NHL because it's the same shit going on there.
Does MLB have a rule, written or unwritten, that trades cannot be made (or at least announced) during the All Star break? I'm sure I remember reading or hearing that at some point, but I can't find it referenced anywhere.

They can wheel and deal behind the scenes whenever they want except after the August trade deadline. During the All Star break they don't announce anything during the event. I think it has to be a week before the three day event starts and the day off after, then it's business as usual.
It happened to RHP-Jeff Samardzija in 2014, when the Cubs dealt him to the A's on July 4th. The game was on the 14th. He was was voted to the All Star team then immediately traded. He was ineligible to participate in the game but was still recognized as an All-Star for the original league. He wore a generic NL jersey and All-Star Game cap for the pregame player introductions.
Awkward...

I don't think they'll let that happen again.
Shay - seems like your saviour Oneil Cruz isn't doing any better than the great hopes of the Tigers:Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson are.
You're welcome Duke. I do not recall the proposed Vida Blue trade. I am familiar with the "the best interests of baseball" clause used over time by the commissioners. It seems arbitrary. I'm not sure when the last time it was used. A-Rod? I know Bart Giamatti didn't evoke it against Pete Rose. I think he voluntarily took a deal.
I would think that clause could be used to mandate a salary cap, or a spending floor, holding the owners accountable. I don't know. I'm just a suffering Pittsburgh Pirates fan who sees surcharges added to ticket prices for upgrades even though PNC Park was funded mostly by taxpayers money. They don't even cover maintenance charges for the park. The city does. So, you know where that comes from. It's truly an imbalanced situation. The owner of the Pirates is always asking for hand outs and he gets them.
Anyway, sorry, I was starting to rant. ;D
Here you go Shay - from a more civilized and happier time
I'd see holding up approval of a trade for three days as more a temporary pocket veto than anything else. The Vida Blue to the Reds trade was shut down by the then commissioner of baseball (Kuhn) using his "best interest" authority. Kuhn and A's owner Charley Finley hated each other, so some of Kuhn's actions against Finley might have been personal. Finley was trying to sell his best players, not trade them. He tried to do that with Rawley Fingers and a couple others, and the commissioner stopped those as well.
For Blue the Reds were paying Oakland around $2M (a huge amount in the late 70s) and giving up a top prospect named Dave Revering. (Revering was traded to the As eventually for journeyman reliever Doug Bair.) Revering was sort of a poor man's Dave Kingman who didn't last all that long in the majors.
Todays Jays vs Sox game had a scoreboard that read 26 - 3 bottom of the 7th. Ended 28 - 5 for the B-Jays. Boston's best pitcher got roughed the hell up. The fans boooo'd and booo'd as run after run would come in for the visiting team, but to their credit? They all pretty much stayed for the duration. Not sure what any of that says about them - sox fans.

I don't know about that. They are still in the playoff hunt and Preller likes to be aggressive. I expect him to make a big trade soon.Last year's "big" trades were awful. Preller is likely to be fired. Their epic collapse last year and the personnel and performance issues this year are adding up.

This is his last chance then. Find a way to shed that Myers contract and get Profar out of the outfield. They need a legit OF. Plus some bullpen pieces. There are plenty of quality players on that team, unlike...the Pirates. :(@ShayP Changing your AV every fucking day now? And don't deflect it back to me, buddy boi! It’s not unlike a double play toss so the basic instinct and muscle memory was certainly there. I played a lot of infield back in the day, mostly 3rd base. I could watch that clip quite a few times without getting bored. Quality play.
It's like you're not even trying
I have not seen this since I got hooked on baseball in 2015. Gotta be very strange the Red Sox fans when the lowly O's are ahead in the standings.
Damn fuckin' Yankees though. Sheeiit!!
Ke'Bryan Hayes, the third baseman of the Pirates, was not wearing a glove and eating sunflower seeds while a Mets player scored. The thing is...Hayes wasn't in the dugout. He was on the field, at his position. That sums up the state of the franchise.
I guess one might wonder why the Pirates would give Hayes an eight year contract in the first place? Good glove man to be sure and there is potential at the plate but that hasn't translated into good numbers. I guess being in a small market, you take a chance and hope.
Some sons of former Major Leaguers work hard and do well.. then there is Fernando Tatis Jr... Maybe Mr Hayes is trying to be more like Fernando. I looked for video of it briefly, I am sure I'll see it if I change my search parameters.

Fernando put up good numbers. He screwed up with the PED's. A twitter search for Ke'Bryan Hayes will show the play. (link below) Unmute it. The commentators reverse the play to show what happened.

Why would he work hard after watching his slob of a father?
Somewhere in my collection is a phone call Frank Robinson made to a Montreal radio station to tell them to ban the caller who just ranted about Fatnando Fatis.
I called back in and they put me on the phone with Frank.
I told Frank he may not see how lazy Fatnando is because he is busy sleeping in the dugout during games.
He got better rest when he was manager than he is getting now.
I can't wait until Bud Selig joins Frank in hell.
Okay. :o So are you bitter that the Expos gave up Steve Kline and Dustin Hermanson for him and a sack of potatoes? Tatis was terrible in Montreal but okay elsewhere.
A whole hell of a lot of people are starting to wonder if all of those Tatis numbers were enhanced. Something about masking drugs were mentioned early on.
There has been some scuttlebutt that his father at the end of his career had finally gotten caught but agreed to turn witness for the Mitchell Report whatever the big ped report was back in the day of Barry Bonds.
And, like Bonds, PEDs don't make contact with the ball. He still might salvage his career. Bonds was a solid player and likely would have still been Hall of Fame material if he didn't juice up, right?
No.
He was a lazy sack of shit who played 3rd base like he was a DH.
Okay. :o So are you bitter that the Expos gave up Steve Kline and Dustin Hermanson for him and a sack of potatoes? Tatis was terrible in Montreal but okay elsewhere.
The two previous third basemen weren't very good. Barret, Andrews. There was a black hole at that position since Tim Wallach, even though he wasn't very good his last couple seasons.
When Hermanson was with the Padres, the announcers talked him up like he could be a great one, I mean he did hang around... I guess I'm going to baseball-reference.com...

Maybe because one of them was a catcher.
A cardboard cutout would have put in more effort than Fatnando Fatis.
I think he missed 32 games due to whiplash from watching ground balls go by him that he refused to put any effort into fielding.
LOL! Barret did play third base for a while, or am I confused. I recall him doing both positions. C/3B
... Winning is fun. Losing is not...

@Bart Ell Seriously...Do you think there's chance of the Expos ever returning? I hope so. The Commissioner is being vague on the timeline but wants to add 2 more teams.
What ever became of the TB Rays plan to play in Montreal 59% of the season? Is it totally dead or just delayed?
I think it's dead. Not really a good idea anyway.
If and when expansion happens, unless there's a team that relocates, I would like the Expos back in Montreal and one of the next two...Nashville or Portland.

From Jarry Park to Olympic Stadium, those weren't appealing venues. What about a trendy downtown entertainment district?

They are probably glad they didn't build that. That stadium looks more like something designed in the 1990s, the trend is bricks and old school looks.

It's a shame Olympic stadium was there as long as it was.
You mean the stadium that was designed in the 90s looks like it was designed in the 90s?
Was there?
That thing will be there forever.
It would cost close to a billion dollars to dismantle it.
I don't even remember when they moved the team to Washington.

I like that. I'd wear it to the Oktoberfest, or pretty much any time.My thoughts exactly, Shay. Obviously intended for Oktoberfest, which is huge in Zinzinnati, but, since it’s green, I can wear it for St. Pat’s Day, or hang Christmas lights on it and use it for the Holidays. It would definitely work for St. Pat's day. Heck...since some Yinzers wear Steelers and Penguins jerseys to funerals, I'll wear that to one. :DHeh, heh, heh… just tell them Mr. Red is rushing in to provide the last great toast of brewsky for the departed, along with a one wiener salute.

I would recommend the Braves, but since the worldwide institution of the DH, there is no real baseball anymore. Look at the Savannah Bananas.
Echoing @JUAN, when the Chargers left San Diego, I became a bit more of a college football fan. Any college baseball around you?
There are several colleges who have teams. @sean92008 Pitt is a Division 1 team. I should check some of them out. The season is over so I'll have to do it next year. I did go to Virginia Commonwealth University games when I was down there and it was a good time. Not sure why I never considered going to the college games here when I moved back.

As a teenager, I went to Bob Skinner's San Diego School of Baseball (he, Bob Cluck and Glenn Ezell were partners, I think. There were a lot of Pirate uniforms on those fields.
I think Cluck was with the Astros at the time, there were a few Astro uniforms, including Dave Smith before he made it to the majors. Brent Strom and Dave Garcia were regulars there as well. The guest instructors were incredible too. Dave Winfield, Maury Wills, Randy Jones. They even had umpires there and I'm forgetting if it was
Doug Harvey or maybe a Wendlestadt.
I like it. An oblique Rocky the Flying Squirrel reference.

That is cool. @sean92008 That's some real deal instruction. Do you remember any of the Pirates? I wouldn't be surprised if Willie Stargell made an appearance post-career.This was, I'm not good with time, either the late seventies or the early 80s.

@ShayP Jays vs Phillie this evening. Gonna be a tough one for the birds.
Ha! If it was Nutasha I could go to the 'Furry' convention they have in Pittsburgh every year. Ugh. Nothing like unexpectedly seeing this downtown:A good friend of mine ran into one of those “Furry†characters recently at a large hotel. At first, she thought it was cute, until the dude started acting, ahem, a little weird, so to speak. She’d never heard about Furries, up until then. I hadn’t either until she told me about it.

I think I’ll just stick to wearing my Mr. Red shirt. ;)
Does anybody notice who is up front and center in that photo? San Diego's own, it's very own, formerly of KGB radio, the San Diego Chicken!
... still waiting for San Diego to collapse.
I mean, what's the use of hoping? Who did the Padres face in the two times they made it to the world series?
The 1984 Detroit tigers. You know, the team that got off to the 35-5 start.
They also hit the 1998 Yankees. True, some really bad umpiring really screwed one game up, but that Yankees team was fucking unstoppable.
This year? Oh I don't know, the Los Angeles fucking Dodgers. They not only have the Padres' number, they got their girlfriends' and wives' numbers as well. (This is a Trevor Bauer joke. Ask me to explain later.)
The least they could do is let Milwaukee get in and bow out gracefully. Anything assisting in the firing of GM AJ Preller is good. If he didn't get into a career in baseball, he would have worked in the government. He knows how to spend other people's money and make a big splash, but never get good results.
My guess is that most people that hide behind a costume like that have something else going on, the anonymity to behave poorly or maybe very low self-esteem.

All I know about Furries came from an episode of Bob’s Burgers. That’s more than I want to know.
@KSM The only advantage the Phillies have is they are at home. Stripling needs to pitch well for the Jays. The Phiilie's O has fizzled as of late.@ShayP Hey! Did you watch Jays-Phillies? Odd, weird, sort of WTF game. High scoring to say the least though.

Are Yinzers known to be an unhandsome people?
Wait, isn't George A. Senda from Pittsburg? George enjoys whimsey, do we know if he participates in such events? Imagine finding yourself in a hotel room with a costumed Falkie or Kathie..
The female Yinzo's are quite handsome.
BTW...the Pirates still, and will, suck. Yankees 14 Pirates 2
Whatever happened to the first baseman who had that bad play when all they needed to get the force to stop the run from scoring... And they didn't...
Will Craig. He was cut, then signed a contract with a Korean League team. Cut there too. Out of baseball.
All Will Craig had to do was touch first base. There were two outs. Just touch the bag. I actually feel bad for they guy.
Brain farts happen a lot in baseball, the difference is many teams will yell out instructions. Even fans will alert players to stuff. It's horribly unfortunate, and what's worse is his teammates could have yelled something too. Hell, Adam Frazier could have gone over the first base in a timely manner too.
Yeah, brain farts happen. But we're talking about the Pirates. Years of brain farts. Nobody on that team, at that moment, could process what was happening. Still the same today. The recent Hayes 'no glove/sunflower seed incident' and the cell phone flying out of Rodolpho Castro's pocket while sliding into third base.
The Buccos just don't get it. Same old crap. Rinse and repeat.
Cell phone? Cripes.
Does seem that the Pirates have a problem in that area. Only similar thing I can think of with the Tigers was the Gates Brown hot dog incident. He got called on to pinch hit way earlier in the game than normal and had to stuff his usual mid game meal of two dogs down his shirt. Of course ended up having to slide and got caught due to the ick.

This season alone, the Pirates lost 21-0 and 19-2 and 18-4 and 16-0 and 14-2 (twice). They are just now completing the third-worst three-year stretch in the franchise’s 141 years, in terms of winning percentage (the early 1950s were worse, believe it or not).Yeah I tried to get on board but realized quite early that the ship was taking on water. Jays beat yanks night before last but lost to the yank last night. Series ends tonight with G3.
For all major league managers who’ve worked at least 300 games, third-year skipper Derek Shelton has the worst non-expansion team winning percentage of the modern era.
Shelton entered Wednesday’s fray 101 games under .500 for a winning percentage of .366. According to Baseball Reference, the only manager since 1946 with a lower mark was Roy Hartsfield who “led†the expansion Toronto Blue Jays to a 166-318 record (.343) in their first three years of existence.
In fairness to the current manager...he is working for the worst, in my opinion, ownership in the entire league. Nonetheless, he makes really dumb decisions and manages dumb players who appear to not know any fundamentals of the game.
Shit arm.

White Sox went with Sister Mary Jo. She's got it going on!
I liked her form and how she hopped over the stripe. I never thought I'd be turned on by a Nun. :D
Since all the priests are gay or pedophiles... You might have a crack at some holy holes! (Christ's Cunts seems too harsh... Juicy Jesus Holes, too long...)
The local talking heads never cease to amaze me. The Pirates have 2 games remaining. Both against the Cardinals. The Pirates will most likely lose one of them thus giving them 100 losses. Yet some of the talking heads are stating how exiting the season has been. It boggles the mind.
Homers bother me because I've been burned so many times.
Hearing the hype about players like Sean Burroughs, Reuben Rivera and a million others coming through the Padres farm system... The greatest thing since sliced bread often turned out to be trod-upon cat poop.
With perennial losers, the sportscasters think they've got to wear rose colored glasses or they won't have a job.
The fans and even the teams themselves tend to overvalue their players. They see a guy hit a few doubles or strikeout 12 and think they can do it every game if they can just put it all together.
Many would agree with you.
Blue Jays: possibly the best insignia in Major League Baseball.

I already miss baseball, dearly. Go Astro's.. :-\ I guess. For all I know they've already won. ?
Georgia football fans are really pissed at the stadium in Los Angeles. It has made no accommodations for a college game. No tailgating! How are fans supposed to watch a game sober?
Maybe we can actually use the sports category to discuss SPORTS! What a concept! Talking sports in the sports area! Eureka! Fucking Tampa Bay Rays can't seem to lose! Cocksuckers, I hate them. ShayP's Pirates have actually won a few games. And those Damn Fucking Yankees ::) In good news, the Jays beat Mike Trout and the scumbag Angels last night even though the Jays have a pathetic total of 4 home homeruns thus far on the season.
There is no more Major League Baseball.Oh stop. C'mon Juan. You guys who say that.. ::) :P Do you watch MLB? @JUAN If you do, it's no different than the guy who doesn't vote but bitches about the results. Asking in a nice way. Coz I'm nice. Way nice.
... And when did baseball go bad for you, and why?
The strike wiped out Tony Gwynn's push for .400. Starting with the strike shortened season, he batted over .400 over the next 162 games. If it wasn't for that strike...
There is a beer to commemorate that Year's final batting average... .394 Ale.
I think the only baseball I get here in the sticks is when Fox has a game. I haven’t looked yet this year. I think it finally died for me when the commissioner’s office made its latest attack on Atlanta and moved the All Star game. It’s been a long series of attacks beginning with whether the Braves would even be allowed to move to the city, then when they created divisions putting them in the west with Los Angeles and San Francisco, then setting up the schedule to try to prevent Hank Aaron from breaking Babe Ruth’s record at home, then threatening to fine manager Eddie Matthews if he sat Aaron until the Braves came back to Atlanta, then not approving them having the word Atlanta on their uniforms until Ted Turner told them to go fuck themselves, then there was the fuss and threats of the Braves signing Andy Messersmith, a fuss that lead to the death of Bill Lucas, who should have been recognized as baseball’s first black GM, but was not allowed to take the title though he did the job, then the lawsuits over Lucas’s death between MLB and Turner, then after Bowie Kuhn retired as commissioner, things cooled off until recently.
I’ll just point out most of this stuff happened after the Weimar American League adopted the DH.
Baseball strike 1994. Wiped out an exceptionally good year, just as the pennant races were starting. No World Series. Something like the 8th work stoppage in 15 years, or whatever it was.
When they came back, the baseball was goosed to attract non-fans who thought the only interesting part of the game was HRs, the players bulked up on steroids, it turned into nothing but HRs Walks and Strikeouts, and the pitchers and batters decided to hold onto the ball and spend an eternity setting up and backing out of the Batter's Box.
2-1 games in 2 and 1/2 hours turned into 13-4 five hour bore-fests.
Giants have been to the WS 4 times since, didn't watch a minute of it, don't miss it.
What gets me is the old timers (announcers and commentators) who know better act like nothing's changed. I guess they need the job.
OK. So you guys are somewhat disgruntled. I get it. But what now? So that's it? Do you guys still watch while stink eyeing the TV? I don't understand the defeatist attitude. I love you guys but you're acting like Lily after gets beat up and sent packing in the political threads.
Come back to the fold. Fall in I say! Maybe it ain't what it used to be, but it's still something!...
Ok. So I guess I'll be the only active member in this thread for the remainder of the season.
Negative. Although it will be another grim year for the Tigers.Well at least you're here! Tigers vs Jays next week starting on Tuesday evening for Jays home opener. @Walks_At_Night
Watch this. Good aggressiveness by the runner. Good work by the catcher and one hell of a nice play and throw by the thirdbaseman.

Shay's Pirates are 16-8! Playing very well. Too bad the fuckers couldn't have turned it on like this last year. ::)

Orioles showing signs of life too.The entire AL East is on fire Averaging 700 or so. Rays had an 11 or 12 win streak from the beginning of the season.. until they got to Toronto for a 3-game series. Jays won 2 of 3 thus breaking the momentum - sort of. When the O's are playing well it makes for a much funner division to watch IMO.
Detroit's Baddoo attempts a steal. Catcher's throw hits him right in the crank. Ball bounces off Baddoo's dick into the glove. Out!Hahaha that was damn good!
That's the rarest of all baseball plays - the ole three balls (counting the pitch) and you're out.

I wore a cup. Always. MLB coaches always asked if "equipped" at clinics. I think all the way through Colt League, I don't recall being "cup checked" in high school.
For whom the bell tolls? It tolls for Bob Gibson. 8)
By God the AL East division is a murderers row this season. My Jays cleaning house everywhere else but their own division where they're getting their asses handed to them series after series. Inconsistent starting pitching once again. Hot, or cold. No in-between.
@Walks_At_Night Who's your team? Maybe I'll root for them as a secondary. Please don't say the Tigers..
A favorite childhood memory:
Tigers, Tigers, burning bright,
in the ballparks of the night,
your pitching’s good, your field adroit,
so why no pennants for Detroit?
You blaze around the big league parks
with bats that fairly give off sparks.
But when they total up the score,
you’ve lost again to Baltimore
You start out brave with each new year,
with stalwart hearts, you know no fear.
Then from on high, while sitting pretty,
you blow four games at Kansas City.
The Cleveland Indians go to work,
they beat you good, so does New York.
When Boston adds a mortal blow,
all you can cry’s “look out below!â€.
Before the season’s finally done,
you’ve been outplayed by Washington.
Amid the heated pennant race,
you fight to cling to seventh place.
Tigers, Tigers, burning bright,
in the ballparks of the night,
some day the fans will get their fill,
and ship the team to Louisville.
For whom the bell tolls? It tolls for Bob Gibson. 8)
The last year of the AL and NL champs going directly to the World Series, baseball was one year away from a playoff round and the Miracle Mets.
What is the deal with this? MLB threatens Milwaukee: "You best sink a half billion in repairs and upgrades to your ballpark or we'll relocate you". Is the roof problematic?WTF? it's a beautiful park IMO.
It bothers me that the O's are really good this year. Their rebuild is paying off and they're a threat to everybody. Fuck you, Baltimore. And fuck you Rays, Yankees, and absolutely fuck you Red Sox.
It's so weird the Jays are still above .500 but are over 10 games behind the Rays and 7 behind Baltimore. BTW the first place Tampa Bay Rays (who have been good for a while)11,000 today afternoon, 9,000 yesterday evening

They built the Tampa Bay stadium in St. Petersburg, not in the larger Tampa. People in Tampa won’t cross the bay for anything except those wanting to sample the gay life in St. Pete. There have been lots of discussions about building a new baseball stadium near the football stadium in Tampa but no action.
... That will be the 4th city for the A's. Wonder if that is some sort of record for a franchise?
That occurred to me as well. As a sports loving kid I was fascinated and horrified by the idea sports franchises could and would move.
That the Sonics moved to Oklahoma City (really bro?) still irritates. When those fans were all upset about KD leaving, my thought was ''he was drafted by Seattle, you stole an entire franchise''.
Anyway, the only one that comes to mind are the Sacramento Kings. Starting the NBA as the Rochester Royals, then the Cincinati Royals, then Kansas City-Omaha Kings (not going to count later dropping the Omaha and just being KC), then Sacramento.
... Finley related I suppose.
Utah Jazz?
Stupidest name in sports. They should have renamed the team the Salt Lake Pioneers or SLC Temperance.
Cracker Jazz?
Same with the Lakers after moving from Minneapolis.

Shay would be happy for his Pirates today... Sweeping the Padres.

I think so. But the Pi's would sure as shit get swept themselves the next series and he would be the first to predict such a thing.
I dunno, the Padres are the league's slumpbusters.Pad's weren't in the conversation. Talkin' the inconsistent Pirates. I actually forgot about the Padres altogether.

Trevor Bauer's channel is full of ballmarks too.
Isn't that dude in Japan now? He's gotta be loving every minute of it.
I switched cable back on for football season which means I'm seeing MLB for the first time this year. These enlarge bases are absurd. Why not make them 3-feet square? The enlarged bases are there for comfy napping should a player tire out from hitting a double. Just stretch out on base. Niiiiiiiiiccee

No talk of those lovely see through pants? ???
Are you guys getting buried under like 20 feet of snow or something or is that just California and Nevada?
No snow- well it snowed last night for a bit but was all melted by about 11am. I went for a long walk and it was really sunny and lovely out, kinda windy but still nice.
Rusty Staub may have been the slowest human being to play Major League baseball but he sure had a wonderful swing. Enjoyed watching him when he played for Detroit. Here he wins the game for The Bird.
They brought out the good plant for this celebration.
Get to see a little bit of Jarry Park in those Staub clips. Did you ever get to see a game there Bart? It was so small it would be like watching a minor league game but with major League players.
I did but I was too young to remember anything.
I was told that Baby Bart waved at Pepe Mangual at the start of every inning and Pepe Mangual would wave back.
When he ran out to start the 8th he climbed the left field fence and handed me a ball.
They traded him a week or two after that.
BASTARDS!
What ever happened to the ball?
The best major league baseball watching I experienced was at the late Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida. It was a small stadium where you could really see and interact with the players.
Dammit, opening day is supposed to be in Cincinnati not South Korea.
