Sicario - It's about average. Never ending shooting and kidnapping .  No character development . The girl's accent sounded more So Cal Chicana than Mexican.    Slow and predictable in a bad way.

UFO -- pretty good. The best alien contact movie in a few years.

Sierra Burgess is a Loser  -- another enjoy able movie. A coming of age story of a misfit girl . Probably meant for teenagers.

Uncle Drew - a comedy. Good over all.  Funny jokes, but cheesy at times.

Tag - Comedy. Good to have on in the background.  So stupid it was funny. I liked it.

Unfriended - Computer thriller.  It required reading,  but it was interesting enough I enjoyed it.

A prayer before dawn  -- a good prison box ing movie

Fifty Shades of ***** - every release is lame.  Painful to watch--painfully boring.  Not sure who the target audience is,  but it seems like something a sexuallly unsatisfied or midlife crises housewife would like.

Beginning Purge 2018 -- This is a prequel to the Purge movies. The good about it : the social commentary (class divide) is valid. It struggles not to be preachy.  It is Reminesent of the early 1970s Escape from the Bronx or whatever it is called.

It has a couple of problems. They ruin it. It was basically a non-stop shoot out. The plot was simple as it gets: Don't die. There was no character development.  You end up neither liking nor hating anybody.

Even movies that are supposed to be erotic are boring now.  There was stronger stuff than this in Emmanuelle and the Story of O in the 70's.  One of my favorites is The Lickerish Quartet.

it sounds like interesting stuff, but Im kind of scared of 1970s porn. It’s hairy. And raunchy like the Taboo series. The Caligula film with Peter OToole was kind of cool because it was so unusual and had histoRical accuracy. It didn't work for me as erotica because of all the hair.

I'll try the lickerish quartet. If Andy Warhol endorsed it, it must be some thing unusual.  I liked some of his experimental films.

It's not hard porn. Plus the storyline is half-decent.  That's the problem with erotica/porn today.  It is either too soft and boring like 50 shades or if it is hard core, there is hardly a plot and all they do is grind.  There is more to sex than grinding.  It is the foreplay that provides a lot of the erotic thrills.

The mountain 2 , 2018-- It's a war movie set in the Middle east. One of the actors looks like Tom Cruise.   5 minutes into it and I realise it's a Serbian or something movie with english subtitles.

I like to have a movie on in the background while I do something productive. I can't do that with subtitles.  If I want to read for the next two hours I will read a book. Subtitles make me angry.

Finding Elaine or whatever it was 2018. --  genetic kidnapping and escaping in the desert and fleeing captors story. Been told 100 times before by better screenwriters. This was mediocre  . Not worth watching.

Leave no Trace 2018 -- a story about a homeless man and daughter living in the woods in forest park in Portland, Oregon. Touching and well done story.

A Small Favor 2018 - a murder mystery and love triangle.  Well done, but it is not my thing.

Mandy 2018 -- it has nicholas cage. Non-standard plot structure.  Full of dream sequences and hallucinations. Repetitive . Looks like Twinkie Peaks or some David Lynch film. Other than Dune 1984, i dont like anything Lynch did. Difficult to follow if it's on on the background.  Not I interesting enough to sit and concentrate through two hours of it. Dreadful.

Eighth Grade 2018 -  a story about an awkward eighth grade girl. It was done well. Easy to follow.  Interesting enough to watch all the way to the end.

Been on the fence about watching Leave No Trace, but you've tipped me over that fence. I'll check it out

It’s my favorite movie I've seen in a while.  One thing that stood out was the authenticity. The casting was excellent. The characters were believable. The actors looked and acted the way people in Oregon really act. Kind of rare. It worked well with the story . This opposed to Hollywood dress-up characters who look like Hollywood people performing a role for a camera.

It was also fun seeing it set in the woods where I used to jog, on the tram I used to take to work, the hospital campus on Marquam hill where I used to work

Didn't go to the movies this past week (been super busy, haven't even had a chance to get on here much) This week it's a toss up with Fahrenheit 11/9 or Mandy. I know what I am going to get with F11/9 but I heard Mandy is Nick Crazy in full crazy mode which might be fun. I see F&B didn't like it but I always like movies that are a little different and messed up and you seem to describe it as that. Still not sure probably wait for Tuesday discount day

Last weekend Box office Sep 21-23      Weekend       - Total -       Budget
1 The House With A Clock In Its Walls      $26,608,020    (New)        42M
2 A Simple Favor                                    $10,252,206    (32.5M)      20M
3 The Nun                                               $9,965,635    (101M)       22M
4 The Predator (2018)                              $9,176,459    (41M)        88M
5 Crazy Rich Asians                                  $6,346,641    (159M)       30M
6 White Boy Rick                                      $4,857,655    (17.5M)      29M
7 Peppermint                                            $3,684,122    (30.5M)      25M
8 Fahrenheit 11/9                                      $3,008,563    (New)         4.5M
9 The Meg                                                 $2,265,438     (140M)       130M
10Searching                                              $2,150,829     (23M)           6M

I love the story of the Nun.. Horrible reviews but still making over a $100 Million domestic hitting almost 5x it budget. On the other hand tis new Predator was a mistake, weak opening and a huge second weekend drop already falling behind Simple Favor (who opened on the same weekend) and Nun (who is on it's third weekend) It's look like it will just get over half their budget. Speaking of stinkers Life Itself from the creator of the popular TV show This is us, didn't make the top ten, finishing 11th with $2.1 M weekend, (on a $10M Budget) it was Amazon Studio biggest theater release in their  history and it turned out to be the second worst wide release (2500+ theaters) movie since 1982 (last years " Friend Request" was the worst with 2M in opening weekend)

Out this weekend [Rotten Tomatoes rating)
-Night School [30%]
-Smallfoot [69%]
-Hell Fest [35%]
-The Old Man & the Gun [88%]
-Black '47 [74%]

Dawnseeker 2018 -- a foreign sci fi movie.  Definitely a B movie.  It was filmed at a historic site at the ruins of a fortress in the woods. It looks like some former eastern block country like croatia. The plot was vague and hard to follow   . Most of the movie was like watching a 2 hour paintball battre.  The actors looked like they were having fun,  mostly.  I didn't enjoy it.

Toybox 2018--  horror. A family drives off in the RV from Breaking Bad to spend the weekend in the desert  . The grand pa is proud of the RV because he just bought it second hand for a bargain . At first it
Shows promise. It   reminds me of the Hills Have Eyes. But it quickly goes down hill with too many Pointless Evil Entity attacks. The PEE attacks start to kill off the family  . The ending is predictable.

Little Italy 2018 --  Italian families own competing pizzarias. They are havîng a feud but the son and daughter of the rival families start dating. I rate it 6/10. It's not bad but it’s not interesting either.

Check out The Straight Story and The Elephant Man for some good storytelling by Lynch.  He's capable but likes to spend most of his time basking in weirdness.

The latest "Halloween" reboot looks promising. Trying not to watch trailers or read about it. One never knows but I'm a sucker for that franchise even though a few have been absolutely terrible and I worry in this day and age that it will be pushing social agendas and lots of #metoo and 'empowerment,' but certainly Laurie has been through a lot. But maybe not and it will be done in a good way.

I'm looking forward to the new Halloween as well.  Keep in mind that this is written as the true sequel to the first.  Just ignore everything else that came after.
