An interesting event may happen up on Lake Superior today. Marinetraffic.com is showing
M/V Stewart J. Cort headed to Superior, Wisconsin as normal to pick up Iron Ore. What is not normal is the projected route. It is showing her as planning to use The Portage (a weird river/lake/canal) that traverses the Keweenaw Pennisula instead of taking the usual route up and around it. Very unusual if this pans out.
M/V Stewart J. Cort was the first 1,000 foot iron ore carrier on the Great Lakes and if she takes The Portage, she'll have to go under the lift bridge that separates the towns of Houghton and Hancock. Should be quite a sight. I think it is more likely that the Cort will dock in Marquette and pick up iron ore there.
I have no idea why they would take the proposed route if they are really headed to Superior, WI. One reason might be weather but looking at the
Duluth Canal Webcam the lake is very calm.
