Title: Great Movie Trailers
Post by: bateman on August 17, 2023, 11:28:50 AM
Great trailers, not necessarily great movies. (The Men Who Stare At Goats was one of the worst movies I had seen in a long time but the trailer is A+)

(A+ trailer, F movie)

If this movie was made in today's world, the Muslim world would rise up in militant protest.  I think the movie is hilarious, but it bombed despite an amazing ensemble cast.
Thirty year old Shirley MacLaine was stunning.

Youtube was suggesting movie trailers to me a few weeks ago, not sure why but your post was one of the offerings. I watched it, and then I watched the movie for the first time in a very long time. It was in 4K so it looked shiny and new.

I am of two minds on this one. Starts out perfect and then the black and white sequence that goes on until the end. That MAY have worked very well back then to someone sitting in their living room watching TV on a Tuesday night. Now it's just stupid IMO.

Interesting that this trailer mentions the Blu-ray version of this movie because that's what I insist on you purchasing rather than watching it on YouTube or other small screen apps that are available for viewing.  This is a wonderful picture and after watching it for the first time, I was surely convinced that it had been filmed up there in the Himalayas.  It wasn't though, why?   Because it was helmed by Val Guest, one of the greatest directors of all time.

So the blonde, happy go-lucky goofball is transformed into a surly Pacific-type who just goes around whomping ass like all the other comic guys in these movies.  A great opportunity to make something fun and they cock it up.  Leave the aquatic ass kicking to Namor, that's his gig. Aquaman beats to a different drummer.

Why is it that I can't post an embedded video, yet spackle-headed chucklefucks like @Walks_At_Night can do this with effortless ease? Is it some sort of low-key anti-British discrimination going on, akin to shadow-banning? In which case I am going to lodge a pre-emptive 'fuck you'.

Great movie.  I've got it on a high quality Blu-ray disc, only now it's called Quatermass II, the second in a series of imaginative pictures based on the BBC's Professor Quatermass. My personal favorite is Quatermass And The Pit.  (Also called Five Million Years To Earth.)  It was filmed back in 1967 and I got to see it in a movie theatre up in Seattle.  Fun times.

If you haven't seen C.H.U.D. then you are in for a very special treat.  As usual, the trailer doesn't do the movie justice as it thinks that high impact scenes would make people want to visit a local theatre to see the movie.  There is so much more to it than just kill shots.  Great dialogue and very good actors who you might not recognize except for Daniel Stern, who's character runs a Hell's Kitchen eatery for the poor.  He notices an increasing amount of his nonpaying, homeless customers not showing up for their regular bowls of soup and the movie cleverly takes off from there.  I think that there is only one regular DVD available for purchase, sadly no Blu-ray or cheap YouTube versions out there.  But if you have some jingle jangle pocket change to spend, then go for it.  You won't regret it, especially if you augment the viewing of it with your favorite beverage of choice.  Enjoy.

Yet another movie trailer, this one from 1958, that, due to poor quality, doesn't in any way compel a person living in the year 2023 to shell out enough bucks to acquire a DVD via Amazon and watch a movie that is very entertaining and features the great actor Forrest Tucker, and sexy actress Janet Munro.  Perhaps by observing the trailer, one (and this is a very apt numerical reference) might take a chance and purchase the picture.  If so, you will enjoy an exceptionally well made sci fi movie, and see for yourself that the trailer doesn't in any way show how great the movie really is.

Another of my top 50 favorite movies.  If for no other reason than it had an enjoyable 1950s centered plot and because it starred the great actor Richard Denning.  Warning, I highly recommend that you purchase the DVD on Amazon.  The free, full movie on YouTube is woefully extra dark and not worth your time viewing.  As a matter of fact, if you search for it on Amazon, you will have to scroll through a number of Richard Denning movies until you come to The Creature With The Atom Brain, but your search will be well worth the effort.  Best snatch up the DVD while it's still available.

Another of my top 50 favorite movies.  Lots of top-tier stars in it, though sadly, all of them are gone with the exception of Earl Holliman (still with us at 95 years of age) who played the cook.  I've got the Blu-ray version of this movie and it's colorful and crystal clear.

Going to try and get to this one today/tonight. Been looking forward to it but to be honest this thing is averaging 3.5 stars of 5 (6.5 of 10) which is quite disappointing for a Ridley Scott movie. Great trailer, so it fits within this category.

OK. That movie was VERY good. I have no idea who is giving Ridley Scotts Napoleon such a mediocre mark. The cinematography is splendid and looks amazing. Acting.. well it's 100%. Battle scenes are as good as anything out there, in fact, any CGI in this film looks virtually indistinguishable from the real thing which is scary in its own way.

Ended a tad suddenly as if they didn't know how to top it off, but the ending is still very passable.

9* of a possible 10.

@KSM  I think that the ending was a wink and a nod 'sucker punch' of sorts from the director Hal Ashby.  Throughout the whole of the movie, we see the simple gardener become famous because of the great wisdom that people attach to what he is saying.  At the very end, the director wants it to appear that even the forces of nature are swayed by his unconventional behavior.  A great movie and one that I recently purchased on Blu-ray disc.  Also a rare film where I actually identify with the main character.

It's not, it's a big bag of bullshit. Ashby was a massive stoner wankcandle and probably put the walking on water thing in because he was too baked to come up with anything else and it seemed cool to his smelly hippie friends. A bit like Shirley McClaine fucking a bedpost - she must have been wired off her tits too

While I'm correcting your nonsense, Napoleon is also shit. People should stop glamorising that Corsican knobhead and do a movie about a genuine badass like Nelson (who once fought a fucking Polar Bear) or Wellington, who also kicked Boney's fat French arse too.

If you'd bother actually watching these films, instead of using them as a pretext to cuddle up next to damon on some soggy old couch, like a right pair of proper gayboys, with your hands down each others pants, you might not make so many embarrassing mistakes.

In future, to avoid further humiliation, check with me before forming one of your cute little 'opinions'.

Yes. He was flying some weird home built plane with the fuel tank selector in an awkward position. While futzing with that, he lost situational awareness and augered his plane into the bay. He had a jillion flying hours and should have known better but people make mistakes and his cost him everything. Too bad. Talented guy.

Saw it as a kid and loved every second. Riveted I was. After they all split up and go separate ways literally the one guy winds up directly in front of a rock wall that he has to climb in order to keep going. Looks at it and says "piece o' cake" as the hot sun beats down on him. Climbs the damn thing only to find the helicopter of federales waiting for him.

Yes, a favorite of mine, also, @KSM.  One thing I liked about the movie was its pacing.  It moved right along.  My only problem with it was the ending. I would like to have seen more 'comeuppance' concerning the Holbrook character.  Yes, he looked somewhat ill at ease, knowing the jig was up, but I'd have liked to have seen him carried off in cuffs or a newspaper front page showing that he was found guilty of murder.  The movie ended too quickly for me.  The Brolin character didn't even get a chance to hug his wife or anything.

Here is a modern day trailer of a 1953 movie and it works fine because whoever made it used the Canned Heat song "On The Road Again" as background music.  Great movie, starring one of my favorite actors, the late great William Talman.  Remember him?  He played the district attorney on the Perry Mason show.

That movie scared the crap outta me as a kid when it was on TV one Saturday morning. Wasn't in black n' white though.

@Rikki Gins I binged on these classic trailers you've been posting. These are gems, and I have never heard of many of them but I look forward to watching in their entirety.

@KSM  Oh, great, so glad you like the trailers.  The film noir trailers can be seen in their entirety on YouTube.  I subscribe to YouTube Premium and can watch them without commercials.  Almost all the others are trailers of movies that I own...DVDs, many of them in blue-ray format.  I'm old fashioned, and like movies that were made before I was born, (1930s & 40s) on up to when I became an adult (1970s & 80s).  I'm happy that you would like to see the full movies.  Enjoy!

A very satisfying film noir I enjoyed a few nights ago. This fan based trailer caught the flavor nicely.
