Of course it was corny and incredibly boring, it truly was a babysitting show for the lonely and shut in... but I believe Herb was a decent guy and never heard him be a jerk.
I think he felt wronged by Mutual when he was replaced by asshole Larry King on the overnights. He had a sad end to his career, and his life. He passed away at age 64 in 1995.
I spoke to him about a year or two before his death for about an hour, and he was gracious and kind.
