Clear Channel predecessor Jarcor was well known for shill callers.  They would have talent from out-of-the-area stations they owned do calls.  There was a regular caller to WLW's nightly sports talk show back in the 90s who was so obnoxious, a local publication deemed him the most hated man in the city.  I was stunned to hear the same guy doing a local radio show while on business in San Francisco.
