Heh, pretty sure I got that beat.

You know why people followed them from show to show when they were touring?  First of all, they had 100s of tunes they could and would pull out.  Second, they'd play the first part with lyrics, go into a (an often times long) jam, and at some point finally come back and finish it up.  In other words each tune was played differently from night to night if it was even played more than once at any given 3 or four night stand, and every show had a different setlist.  You don't want to miss one.

I did not know that. It actually sounds sort of cool.
Not sure you and Jerry would be on the same side of the political fence though. But, you're there for the music.

So true.  At the August 27, 1972 concert at Veneta, Oregon, the band was halfway through Dark Star when they segued into the song El Paso. A lot of dead head perfectionists were disappointed but I thought it worked out just fine.

He wasn't a kook.

Did you ever see that film Festival Express?  A bunch of bands right after Woodstock were on a chartered train across Canada, with a few stops to play festivals.  Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Buddy Guy, The Band, and so on.  Just them on the train chatting, impromptu jam sessions, and playing at the various stops - fucking great, watch it asap if you haven't already.

The guy that organized it and shot the film lost a ton of money, and years later his son got the film out of the garage, edited it down, and released it.

Anyway, at one of the stops a bunch of hippies were storming the gates insisting they get in free, and either Jerry or Bobby addresses the crowd with an impressive capitalist argument for why they need to chill and pay their way in.  I never heard them talk about politics (although I'm pretty good at tuning it out sometimes), I assume they were vaguely liberal.

Festival Express.  I've searched and found it. I'll order the DVD and no doubt rip it to my "rock n' roll" folder.

They had a guy named Robert Hunter who would take existing songs, and create new arrangements that fit the Dead perfectly.  See ''How Sweet It Is'' above.  El Paso was one of many.

''Dead Head perfectionists'', now I'm irritated, lol.  I remember some of that.  ''Oh, this song or that song is ''too commercial''.  Chrissakes, just have fun.

Make sure you watch the extra material - at least the concert songs themselves.

Like the background in old TV shows, it was cool seeing parts of Canada circa 1970.

@KSM...

Denver?  I briefly lived in the 80127 (Littleton). It was unappealing 30 years ago.  Good luck there.

I doubt it's still there, the Buffalo Rose in Golden was an incredible venue to play at. Rough sawn wood really sounded good in the ambience.

Littleton is close to my new area (Greenwood Village) I talked to a drummer from Littleton tonight. Nice guy, great drummer. That fucking @PolkaDot lives in Denver so I'll have to watch out for the witches' cauldron.  I don't want to wind up in there!  :o

So you moved away from the PNW?  Whew.  I'm moving there in a year or two, and now I won't be bombarded with requests to "hang out."

What color is the sky on your planet?  At least my comments ("Damon has his nose buried in your ass crack") is plausibly supported by his actual post, where the confections that you blow my way ("Your ass is there too") are just made up.  You're like a @PB that lies about personal issues rather than political matters.  Are you also a desiccated old fossil like him?

Why do so many people associate you with the smell of ass?
