Dietrich failed out in Third-Phase of USMC Bootcamp. He barely qualified with a rifle in Second Phase and I am confident that he probably failed because he was unable to meet the physical requirements of field training.  I believe he may have failed a "second-chance" at Swim Qualification before the final recruit battalion exercise.

This was wy before "the Crucible".

M16A2.  I qualified Expert with the M16A1 at MCRD in 1984.  Dietrich qualified Marksman with the A2 in 1987, as his DD-214 shows.

I had the opportunity to do that several times - first was in the Philipines at the range at Subic Bay. Before we qualified with the M1911 we had a demo and we all got to shoot the WW2 types at the range.  We got to experience the M1, M1 Carbine, and the BAR and Thompson.

My brother and I visited a ship during Fleet Week in Seattle and one of the SPs on deck was carrying an M1A. The stock was weathered gray and I assumed it might have belonged to his grandpa or something. If I remember right, the ship was the Chung-Hoon (DDG-93).

The garand is chambered in 30.06 which evolved into the m-14 which was chambered in .308.

The m1 carbine is a fun gun to shoot but the .30 caliber cartridges are only effective at close range. Texas DPS officers used to carry them in their trunk.

The M1A is basically a civilian version of the M14 without a selector switch and with a cast receiver.
